Chapter 12
It was early morning in England when the small group of people appeared on the shores of a quiet lake.
"Well, it has been a while since I've been here," Mad Eye Moody said, looking around. "And it hasn't changed a bit."
"No, it hasn't," Professor Dumbledore agreed, also taking a look around at the peaceful and serene lakeside scenery.
Ichigo had wandered off, to look out over Wastwater, which was, according to the little bit of research he'd been able to do since his mother had told him about this place, the deepest lake in England. He could see two mountains in the distance, which he assumed were Whin Rigg and Illgill Head…or maybe they were Great Gable and Scafell Pike, he wasn't sure what he was really looking at. He knew the head of the Wasdale Valley, where they were standing, was surrounded by some of the highest mountains in all of England and that Wastwater had been voted the winner of "Britain's Favorite View" by one of their TV stations. But that was all he had had time to find out… and at least his headache had started to ease up. He thought Zangetsu might have had something to do with it, if the brief sound of a scuffle he had heard was any indication.
He could believe everything he had read however, because the view he was looking at now was – utterly breathtaking. "This is – incredible," he said to Byakuya, who had trailed him, "Have you ever seen anything like it?"
"No," the nobleman agreed with him for once, "I do not believe I have." There was a pause, "And I believe I may just envy you this location. It is quite…serene."
Professor Snape watched Ichigo quietly, and stopped Moody when he would have shouted for him.
"Give him a moment. He's seeing this place for the first time," the Professor said, watching the two Captains as they stared out over the lake. Byakuya pointed out a large water bird, and Ichigo pointed out a larger bird, higher up, that may have been an eagle. With their history, it was rather nice to see them getting along – if even for a moment.
Grumbling a bit, the ex-Auror complied, and the four wizards – Bill Weasley was with them – joined the two Soul Reapers.
"I have always enjoyed this view," Professor Dumbledore said quietly, "I know this was your mother's favorite spot."
"We should get going," Byakuya said finally. Ichigo nodded and reluctantly turned away from his view of the lake – it could almost be called his lake, because that was why they had come to this place.
To examine the former Kurosaki residence, now owned by Ichigo. He mentally shook his head over this; he was still in school, and not only was he a Squad Captain, but he owned a home.
If the place was still habitable, they would use it as the new headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix. Masaki had been back to see it once to check on it, when she had been to visit Dumbledore after James and Lily had been killed, and had found the protective spells still in place. She had strengthened what was there, added a few more, and then left again. She had never returned.
There were reasons for needing a new HQ, the primary being the unknown status of Number Twelve Grimmauld Place… and of Kreacher, the house elf. They did not know what was to become of the Black family home yet, so the place was not safe for them to continue to use, especially if it went to the next in line, which would most likely be Belatrix. It was Masaki who had suggested that they check out her old home to see if it was suitable. Professor Dumbledore had liked the idea, believing that no one else would think of it either, and had asked Bill Weasley to see if the key to the Estate was at Gringotts. He must have found it, or they wouldn't be here now.
"Now, if I remember correctly, the entrance should be right around…" Professor Dumbledore paused, searching, and then brightened as a dirt pathway shimmered into view once Ichigo inadvertently set foot upon it. The group silently followed the Professor down the walkway until they got to a large, wrought iron gate.
"Bill, do you have it?" he asked, turning to look at the eldest Weasley son.
"Of course," Bill pulled something out of his pocket and handed it over. It looked almost like Ichigo's old Substitute Combat Pass… but not quite. This was round, with a design he could not quite make out in the center of it. It was more like it didn't want to be seen, and was trying to hide itself.
"Bill, Severus, Alastor – this place is obviously protected by more than a few simple spells," Dumbledore said, "and I am not talking about simple Muggle repelling charms, although there are plenty of those. This is Masaki, after all."
"Most definitely," Snape said, staring up at the gate with a frown, as if trying to determine what kind of spells Ichigo's mother had put on the place in addition to the standard deterrents.
"The key is needed – but only a drop of blood is going to unlock it," Bill told them, "that much is in the records. It's what is not written that is the giveaway…"
"It needs a drop of my blood," Ichigo said, looking over at Bill, and remembering the keys at Gringotts. Magic and heredity and blood... Bill smiled and nodded, and handed him a small dagger.
"One drop on the key – and then put the key in the lock. But don't touch the gate before then. We aren't sure what spells your mother used."
Ichigo took the dagger and put a small slice in his left hand, letting the blood drip onto the disk, and then he took the disk and held it up to the gate. The pattern on the key matched the pattern on the gate, and the two fit together, glowed for a moment, and merged. He was careful to not touch the gate directly; there was a reason why Professor Dumbledore had brought the group he had: a curse-breaker, a former Auror, and an expert in the dark arts… no one had been in it since the last time Masaki had been there, so who knew what could have slipped in. Boggarts and doxies could be the least of their worries.
The latches on the gate clanked and clattered open, and the gates themselves soon followed suit, giving the group access to the grounds. They did not enter immediately, however, instead giving the three wizards time to work on the wards first. They were systematically dismantled before the group finally stepped foot inside the perimeter.
The moment Ichigo stepped past the gate, he felt – probed. He stood stock still, his arms out, stopping the others from going forward until the feeling passed.
"What is it?" Moody asked, frowning and looking around.
"Ah – something just – well – examined me, I guess you could say," Ichigo explained as best he could.
"Something?" several of them said at once. Byakuya simply looked at him, waiting for him to explain.
"A spell, I think," Ichigo said, feeling at a loss as to how to explain what he'd felt. "It – was – assessing me, I think…"
"It might be prudent if we waited a moment before we proceeded," Professor Dumbledore said thoughtfully as he stared at Ichigo.
Ichigo took another step forward, and the feeling returned. He stopped – and tried to search out the source of whatever it was.
Can you find it? He asked Zangetsu.
:I believe you are right that it is a spell. I also believe you are correct that it is – assessing you,: the zanpakuto spirit said thoughtfully as he, too, tried to follow the source of the probe.
Ah, so you agree?
:Yes. It has an old feeling. And it feels like your mother, as well.:
Mom…
Ichigo closed his eyes, and reached out with his reiatsu, again trying to find the source of the spell. If it felt like Masaki – it could be one of the protective spells his mother had put on the property. He inched forward again, triggering another search, but this time he was able to capture the trail and follow it back. It was hard work, for someone who was not used to doing such things, and he found himself starting to sweat with the strain of the attempt; he finally found the core of the spell, touched it, stroked it … It was definitely one of his mother's, now that he was holding it, cradling it. And now that he was –
It recognized him. Of course, he had only been a baby when the Potters had been killed, but Masaki had keyed the spell to him, and only he could trigger it. And now that he had found the source, he knew how.
And he did so with a burst of reiatsu that caused Byakuya to look at him with faint disapproval. It swirled around him in a blue whirlwind, forcing the others to back up nervously, although Byakuya stayed put, being used to Ichigo's reiatsu. Bill, Moody and Snape were all looking around with some alarm, afraid that his actions were going to bring notice. Ichigo was not exactly being subtle.
However, Ichigo didn't care – it was the spell's requirement. The spell sucked in his reiatsu, appeared to swirl around in a wild, uncontrolled vortex and then, with something like a satisfied sigh, it let go.
Everyone felt the spell snap back on itself and a moment later, as Ichigo's reiatsu gently rained down, having been dispersed widely over the area by the spell, the house shimmered into view. It had half-timbered, half-stucco walls; turrets and steeply pitched roofs with cross gables; the windows were very tall and the panes very small and in a diamond pattern. The arched entryway and massive chimneys were topped by terra cotta pots. There were more angles and nooks than he could count, and quite a few different roofs, very steep and, he thought, time consuming to shingle. There were also dormers, gables of different heights, and brick work; the house for all of its age exhibited excellent craftsmanship as well as several distinctive touches that screamed wealth, such as stained glass windows. He could only guess what was on the inside.
Ichigo had seen pictures of this type of house, but he didn't know what it was called. It was also, he noticed, very, very large…
"Ah – I had quite forgotten it was a Tudor-style home…" Professor Dumbledore said in a cheery voice. That was it, Tudor, Ichigo thought. It was a Tudor-style house… mansion… practically a castle.
Despite being empty for over twenty years, it still appeared to be in good condition.
"Could magic account for that?" Ichigo turned to look at Professor Dumbledore.
"Possibly; however this is your mother we're talking about," Professor Dumbledore replied, "Still we'll proceed slowly and investigate thoroughly to avoid unnecessary surprises." The words 'Like the one we just had' remained unspoken, but everyone heard it at the end of the sentence.
This, Ichigo thought, watching the other three precede him, is where mom grew up. Her childhood home…
Bill broke a curse on the front door and they entered cautiously; it was dark in the entry, but that was because the drapes were all closed. The floor in the entryway was marble, there was carved wainscoting, and the old English furniture that he caught a glimpse of was covered in white sheets for protection. Just like some old horror movie, he thought, and then shoved the thought out of his mind. This is his mother's home – she left it to him – he had nothing to be worried about in here. He reached out to stroke the wooden banister on a staircase and paused, looking back at the others. It was Snape who inspected the railing and nodded.
Ichigo ran his hand over the smooth wood, and looked up; there were at least three floors, the entryway was open with balconies and open passageways looking down into the Great Hall. Anyone on any floor could look over and see who had walked in the front door.
"Perhaps we should split up," Bill suggested, "we'll be able to look through the house quicker." He was the only Weasley who knew all about Soul Reapers, and Ichigo's heritage. He was also the first Weasley that Ichigo had become acquainted with, and truth be told – Bill was probably his favorite member of the family, with the twins and Ginny tied for second.
"Yes, agreed. Bill, why don't you and Captain Kuchiki investigate the second floor, while Alastor and I continue on down here? Captain Kurosaki and Severus can take the third floor," Professor Dumbledore said, moving off in one direction. Everyone nodded their agreement, and also moved in a different direction; Ichigo and Snape were able to Apparate on their own, while Bill took Byakuya up to the second floor with him.
When they had arrived on the third floor, Ichigo and Snape parted company, Ichigo heading off to the right, and Snape to the left. Dust bunnies galore, he noted as he entered room after room and stifling several sneezes, although from what he could tell, the house was very welcoming towards him – welcoming him home. If a house could have feelings, then it was very happy to have him there. There were the usual small infestations – he found doxies had gotten in through a broken window and infested a set of drapes in one bedroom, but they appeared to be limited to that one room for some reason. He found a few small Bundimun infestations, which he used the scouring charm on. Thankfully they hadn't taken over the entire house… he didn't want to have to get the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures out there to take care of it. (AN)
A thumping in the attic caught his attention, and he almost groaned when he heard it.
:Sounds like you have a ghoul up there, King,: Hichigo chortled, speaking up once again.
Shut up, he retorted. He really didn't feel like dealing with ghouls; best to just leave them be, at least according to the Weasleys, who had one in their attic. Ghouls were fairly dimwitted, and they lived off of household pests… which could account for why the house was so – clean. Other than the room with the Doxies, and the Bundimuns, he wasn't finding much. Of course, he hadn't inspected outside yet. From the one look he had taken out a window, there was a fairly extensive garden and stable.
Ichigo finally ran into a problem in a large bedroom towards the end of the hall. He hastily vacated it, checked the other rooms, and then waited outside the problem bedroom for the Professor to join him.
Snape strode down the hall towards him, also rather astonished at how clean the house was after twenty years. The Black House, being empty for half that time, had been in much worse shape. Ichigo was staring at the ground, a scowl on his face, and there was something in the set of his shoulders that told the Professor that he had run into something that – bothered him.
"There's a boggart inside the wardrobe in there," Ichigo jerked a finger over his shoulder towards the door. Snape's brows rose at the uncharacteristic way he was acting. "I – can't deal with it."
"You – can't?" Snape stared at the young man, stunned. This was a spell that the students had learned in their Third Year, and Lupin had asked him to find a boggart so he could teach the Japanese students – since they didn't inhabit Japan. Snape had found one at Hogwarts and sent it to him, so he knew that the group had been taught about them. For Ichigo to say he couldn't deal with it…
"Sorry. Boggarts are the one thing I actually – failed." Ichigo brushed by him and then vanished, Apparating out of the house. Snape stared after him, stunned and a bit concerned. He made quick work of the boggart and then, still concerned, went to find Ichigo as this was something that needed to be addressed...and he looked on the young man as something of a protégé. He ran into the others, instead.
"Surprisingly clean house," Moody said, staring around, "Somethin's been keepin' it up."
"There is a ghoul in the attic," Snape informed them, "so most household pests would be taken care of by it."
"Where is Kurosaki?" Byakuya inquired, glancing around. Ichigo was not as easy to find these days since he had learned how to control his spiritual pressure.
"Outside," Snape replied, reluctantly.
"Outside?" Bill repeated, surprised. What was he doing outside?
"He – was unable to deal with a boggart." An even more reluctant reply.
"Ah – yes, Remus told me about that," Dumbledore nodded with understanding, "We must remember that for all of his power, he is still young - a teenager. He has seen – and experienced - some things that one his age should not have to see. Like Harry, I'm sure his dreams are quite - restless." From the expression on his face, Kuchiki appeared to have an inkling on what could be bothering Ichigo, and was nodding as Dumbledore spoke. He might even have an idea of what shape the boggart would take, if his expression was anything to go by. Most people were usually surprised at how well Byakuya understood Ichigo – despite how they were barely able to tolerate each other.
"Perhaps we should check on him –" Bill said with some worry.
"I believe it would be best to give him a few minutes by himself," Byakuya disagreed, knowing Ichigo would be embarrassed by anyone worrying about him or making a fuss over him.
"Now, is there anything that we need to take care of?" Dumbledore asked, looking around.
"A room full of Doxies," Snape said, "but that is it for the third floor."
"Ah good. I'll ask Molly to take care of that, she knows how to clean those out. And the second?"
"Pretty clean up there, also. Nothing I couldn't handle right away," Bill replied, "We had a boggart as well, but Captain Kuchiki had a rather unique way of taking care of it."
"Oh?" they all looked at him.
"They are not immune to being sliced in half by a zanpakuto," Byakuya said stiffly, brushing at an invisible dust speck on his sleeve.
Moody coughed and then openly grinned at the Captain, while taking out his silver flask and raising it in a silent salute before he took a long gulp of whatever was in it. Professor Dumbledore openly smiled at Byakuya, while Snape raised an eyebrow in amusement. Everyone knew better than to ask even Bill what shape it had taken, as they were pretty sure that the Captain would have sworn the eldest Weasley son to silence on the matter.
"There is one thing…" Byakuya said grimly. They all looked at him expectantly. "I am sensing the reiatsu of – something else. Something that is similar to the house elf that Kurosaki has adopted."
"Inside or outside?" Moody asked, looking around curiously.
"Inside."
"Didn't see anything…" he frowned pensively.
"Ah, but house elves are very sneaky; if they don't want to be found, then they won't be. Bill, if you would – go ask Kurosaki to return, and have him summon Winky. She might be the best one to see if there is another house elf in residence. And it might be the thing to take his mind off of other matters," Professor Dumbledore asked him, a rather knowing expression on his face. He had known Masaki and her family best, so if they had had a house elf, he would be the one to know.
Bill nodded and left the house to go look for the new owner.
Ichigo was outside, staring out at the overgrown garden. It was infested by gnomes – he was going to have to have the Weasley twins show him how to de-gnome it, he mused, as he watched them rather blatantly digging up the plants and eating them right under his nose. Of course, considering the fact that most of the garden had been overrun by Horklumps it probably didn't matter at the moment. The gnomes could eat as many of them as they wanted. Watching the gnomes go about their business however, was rather calming. (AN)
As he had told Professor Snape, boggarts were the only thing he had failed in his DADA lessons, and that was because the boggart took the shape of the one thing that was still giving him nightmares – Ulquiorra. Faced with the Fourth Espada in all of his glory again, Ichigo had frozen. Lupin had had to take care of the boggart. He had tried several times to overcome it; however he was unable to come up with anything to laugh at while using the spell. Comedy was not something he was good at. Unless it was unintentional.
Suddenly sensing he was not alone, Ichigo turned, to see a small tailless white dog that looked something like a Jack Russell Terrier standing behind him. It was staring at him intently.
"Hey," he said to it, "are you lost?" it cocked its head, listening to him. He knelt, and the dog moved forward, to sniff his hand, its hindquarters wiggling as if it was trying to wag a non-existent tail. Ichigo rubbed its head, but still having the feeling that he was not alone, stood and looked around – and jumped back, forgetting the dog was there, and fell over the dog to land on the ground on his ass. The dog yelped, but appeared to be more worried about Ichigo than himself.
The cause of Ichigo's startlement stared back at him with some little surprise; two winged horses and a griffon.
Holy shit, he thought, staring at the trio, what next? Where are they all coming from?
:They were tied into the spell,: Zangetsu suggested, :when you triggered it, they came. They've been hiding in the mountains.: There was a pause, :I believe the griffon is what you may have seen earlier…not an eagle. It was so high up, you could not see what it was, but it appeared large because of its size.:
Yeah, makes sense… he thought, sitting there and staring at them. There was a gray Pegasus and a chestnut one; if he remembered his Care of Magical Creatures correctly, the gray was a Granian, and the chestnut was an Aethonan. So – they've been hiding in the mountains for – twenty years? Just waiting for him to come here? Was that possible? How long did they live?
:Dunno King, but we're dealing with magic here – anything's possible,: Hichigo commented, sounding dubious. :And this is yer mom we're talkin' about… she could'a done almost anything.:
He had a point there. And if she had had Lily's input before she had died… heaven knows what that pair had come up with. They were utterly frightening when they got together… worse, he thought, than Sirius and James. Had they been in the same House at school… he shuddered involuntarily at the havoc that could have occurred.
"Ichigo – are you all right?" Bill Weasley walked toward him slowly, his eyes on the three – four – newcomers.
"Uh, yeah. Just a bit surprised, is all. They sort of all snuck up on me," he admitted, letting Bill help him up.
"You must have been really deep in thought for a griffin to sneak up on you," Bill said, worriedly.
"Yeah, but don't tell anyone that – I'll never hear the end of it," Ichigo groaned, scratching the back of his head. Bill nodded, and then looked down at the dog.
"It looks like it could be a Crup; they're wizard-bred dogs. They are supposed to be very loyal to their wizards, and very aggressive towards muggles."
"I guess that means I won't be bringing it with me to Karakura Town," Ichigo said dryly. The last thing he needed was a dog that was attacking his father's patients. Or his friends. Bill smiled faintly.
"No, best leave it here. It's survived this long – I have a feeling that something has been taking care of it."
"Uh – something?" Ichigo parroted, looking at him with some bafflement.
"Yeah – Professor Dumbledore asked me to come get you, and for you to summon Winky. Captain Kuchiki thinks he sensed another presence in the house – similar to hers."
Ichigo stared at Bill, understanding dawning on him. One of the possible reasons why the house was in such good shape…
There was a house elf taking care of it.
After all this time, there was still a house elf? He thought as he followed Bill back inside, the dog trotting along behind them. The others were gathered in the Great Hall, waiting. There were a few raised eyebrows when they saw the dog. When they heard about the other trio… even Byakuya's eyes widened at that. A griffin… and two winged horses? Masaki was full of surprises, and she had apparently either forgotten to warn them – or she'd forgotten about them herself. Or – Ichigo privately thought – she had wanted to surprise them.
"Did Bill explain why we needed you back inside?" Professor Dumbledore asked him quietly. Ichigo nodded.
"Yeah, it makes sense if someone is taking care of the place," Ichigo replied, "You really think Winky will be able to find another house elf?"
"She has a better chance than we do at the moment," Professor Snape commented,
"I have been unable to pin down the location of the reiatsu," Byakuya admitted, "I can just get a vague sense of it in that direction," he waved his hand towards the kitchen area.
Ichigo focused in on that area, and sighed. He too, felt the reiatsu now that Byakuya had pointed it out, but he also could not get a firm grip on it. He nodded; it might be best to summon another house elf. Had he known the current resident's name, he could have just tried ordering him or her to appear.
When he called Winky, it was a long moment before she appeared.
With a loud pop.
"Master Ichigo – Winky is sorry, Winky had to turn off –"
"That's okay, Winky – I told you I would let you know if it was ever an emergency and I needed you immediately. I understand if you had to turn off something for safety reasons," he reassured her, "I'd rather a delay than an accident." Her ears wiggled briefly and she nodded. He then explained why they needed her assistance. Winky looked around thoughtfully, and then suddenly vanished. She was gone for a few minutes, but when she returned, there was another house elf with her – dressed in the old, dirty rags that most house elves dressed in.
"No! Nonononononononononononono!" she was wailing in a high pitched squeaky voice, as Winky tried to drag her to Ichigo. "Taffy does not wants to go, cannot makes Taffy –"
"Stop it!" Ichigo ordered, and both house elves immediately stopped wrestling; Winky because the second elf had suddenly frozen, her eyes widening, as she looked up at Ichigo.
Ichigo knelt in front of them. "Thank you, Winky," he said, smiling at her. She bowed quickly, happy to have been able to help. He turned to look at the second elf. "Your name is Taffy, right?" the elf nodded, her eyes still wide as she stared at him. "I'm –"
"Taffy knows who you is," she whispered, "Taffy has been waiting for years and years for Master to come home."
"What?" Ichigo gaped at the house elf in front of him, not knowing what else to say to her.
"Miss Masaki said you would be coming; Master gave Taffy an order that Taffy hads to obey; that's how Taffy knows that you is Master Ichigo," the elf explained, her fingers touching him lightly. "Master has finally come home."
Author's Notes
Okay, a lot here, most of it from JK Rowling's Magical Beasts and Where to Find Them:
Wasdale is supposed to be one of the most scenic places in Great Britain, and sits on the shores of their deepest lake, Wastwater, Cumbria (also called Wast Water). For more information you can check out the websites I've listed, or just enter Wasdale into the search bar of your preferred browser. http colon /en dot Wikipedia dot org/wiki/Wasdale; http colon /www dot beautifulbritain dot co dot ; http colon /www dot nationaltrust dot org dot uk/main/w-global/w-localtoyou/w-northwest/w-lakedistrict-feature/w-northwest-lakedistrict_camping/w-northwest-lakedistrict_camping-wasdale dot htm; http colon /www dot lonelyplanet dot com/england/cumbria-and-the-lakes/wasdale; http colon /www dot visitbritainsuperblog dot com/2011/10/feast-your-eyes-discover-wasdale/
And now for the Rowling information:
The Doxy, sometimes referred to as the Biting Fairy, is a small Fairy-like creature, sometimes mistaken for a Fairy. The Doxy is covered in thick black hair, and has an additional set of arms and legs. Doxies have shiny beetle-like wings, and a double row of sharp venomous teeth. If bitten, a wizard or witch should take an antidote immediately. Doxies bury their eggs underground, and can lay up to five hundred at once. The eggs generally hatch in two to three weeks. Doxies prefer cold climates and are found throughout Europe and NA. Fred and George Weasley used Doxy venom for their Skiving Snackboxes, sold at Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes. (http colon/harrypotter dot wikia dot com/wiki/Doxy)
The Bundimun is a magical creature found worldwide. It is a greenish fungus with many eyes that can destroy a whole house. The secretions of the Bundimun rot building structures, and if a house gets a large enough infestation it can actually collapse. Scouring Charms can clear out small infestations, but large colonies should be dealt with by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures (Pest Sub-Division). Bundimuns are known to spit out acid that can seriously harm anyone who bothers it. Bundimun Secretions, when diluted, are used in some magical cleaning solutions. (http colon /harrypotter dot wikia dot com/wiki/Bundimun)
The Horklump resembles a fleshy pink mushroom covered in black bristles. Originally native to Scandinavia, the Horklump is now found throughout northern Europe. Horklumps spread sinewy tentacles rather than roots into the ground to look for their desired food of earthworms. They are fast breeders, and can cover an average garden in a matter of days. The Horklump is the favored delicacy of the Gnome. Streeler venom is one of the few known substances that can kill Horklumps. Horklumps have no discernible use, other than feeding gnomes (which is itself a problem). Given their ability to overrun gardens within days and attract problem species, Horklumps are likely viewed as pests by Wizardkind. If this is true then it may explain why gnomes became so common in the first place; biological control is the control of a pest population's size by introducing the appropriate predator or parasite and so gnomes may have been introduced by wizards and witches to their gardens to rid them of Horklumps in the past before the gnomes themselves turned into a pest (a danger of this method of pest control). (http colon /harrypotter dot wikia dot com/wiki/Horklump)
A Crup is a wizard-bred dog that strongly resembles a Jack Russell Terrier, except that a Crup has a forked tail. They are wizard-bred dogs, since they are extremely loyal to wizards and ferocious toward Muggles. They will eat almost anything. Crup owners are required by law to remove the tail of the animal when it is six to eight weeks old, using a painless Severing Charm in case they are noticed by Muggles. A license from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures must also be obtained, and the owner must pass a test to see if they are able to control the animal in Muggle-inhabited areas. According to W.O.M.B.A.T., it may be possible for Crups to interbreed with dogs. (http colon /harrypotter dot wikia dot com/wiki/Crup)
The Winged Horse is found worldwide, and there are many different breeds, including Abraxan, Aethonan, Granian and Thestral. Owners of winged horses are required by law to cast Disillusionment Charms on them on a regular basis. Owners may also compete in a winged horse race. An Aethonan is chestnut in color and popular in Great Britain and Ireland, but they have been seen elsewhere. The Granian is grey and very fast. (http colon /harrypotter dot wikia dot com/wiki/Winged_horse)
The Griffin originated in Greece. It has the front legs, wings and head of a giant eagle, and the body and hind legs, and tail of a lion. The main diet of the Griffin is raw meat. Griffins are often used by Wizards as guards, and are known as fierce creatures. However, despite this, skilled Wizards have been able to befriend them. Like Sphinxes, Griffins are used by Wizards who need treasure guarding. The griffin has served many purposes, including but not limited to "the vigilant guardian of treasure and of kings." They have been called "The Hounds of Zeus". Hippogriffs are born from the breeding of Griffins and horses. The Hogwarts Headmaster's office door has a knocker in the shape of a Griffin.
