The Doctor returned with the food on a tray and sat it down next to River on the bed. "Now, time for some eating." he said as he handed her a napkin and dished her plate first.
When she was settled, he dished himself some and they began to eat, talking small-talk in between bites. River was surprised that this odd food combination tasted so good. So surprised, in fact, that she refused to believe it. Each bite she took reconfirmed it.
The Doctor was finished with his helping long before she was and he proceeded to begin arranging the room differently. "Sweetie, what are you doing?" He paused and grinned at her, "I'm about to be SO clever you may just want to kiss me again." She laughed and he went back to work.
By the time she had finished eating he was almost finished. He had hung a sheet from the ceiling to the floor and cleared the furniture away. The Doctor came over to her and gathered the dishes. "Are you feeling better?"
"Yes much, thanks." She longed to just stand up or move her body but she still had a few hours to go. She really did feel better. Just then, Sara Jane appeared in the doorway. "Hello again! Ready?"
"Oh, hello Sara Jane!" The Doctor went to her and hugged her on his way out, obviously distracted. "What's gotten into him?" she laughed. River joined in and replied, "I have no idea. He says he's going to do something really clever. Anyway, shall we?"
Sara Jane sat on the bed next to her and checked the monitor on her arm, pressing a few buttons. "Everything is looking really good! The timelock is in place in so you can move around a bit more. Not much, mind you! Don't get out of bed or anything drastic. I can imagine you're ready to get up and save the world right now, aren't you."
River smiled and said, "Would that I could run to the end of time and back again." "Not to worry. Ill be back in a few hours!" "Thank you!"
When the Doctor returned he was carrying a small box with a round hole in one side. He set it on the headboard and pressed a button. The hole disappeared and was replaced by a lens. "So, dear, what would you like to watch?"
She stared at him with an open mouth. "You mean...I get to pick? You NEVER let me pick!" "Yes, well, I'm feeling generous today." He handed her his sonic. She took it, smiling wide, and then thought for a moment about what she would pick.
"I want you to watch with me and I want to be able to laugh and cry and get angry. AND I want to poke fun at people who annoy me." She paused, having the perfect show in mind. The Doctor smiled too and together they said, "ER. Season five."
They laughed as River pointed the sonic at the projector and the season five opener began to play. "You know, it's been years since I've watched this. We always talk about it but it's never playing right in front of us." The Doctor nodded in agreement and walked back to the bed, having straitened the sheet. "Yes, quite right. Let the drama begin!" She laughed and sat up a little to adjust herself.
"River, take it easy! You aren't supposed to be moving!"
"Yes I can a bit now. Sara Jane said I'm okay to move a little." He gently moved the pillows from behind her and slid himself into their place so that River could lean back on him. She did so slowly, wincing a little. She was definitely sore from everything.
As the episode began, the Doctor wrapped his arms around her waist and they started their game.
"Oh my gosh, that Dr. Benton sure needs a lesson in manners!"
"Look at Ramano's head! They didn't powder it enough. I'm afraid I can't see because of the glare off it." "Carter shouldn't be so rude to the interns."
"OH! LOOK at Dr. Corday's hair! It's simply impossible!" River laughed. "Sort of like yours, River!" the Doctor quipped back.
There they sat, episode after episode, laughing together, crying together, badmouthing the ER staff together. It was such fun they didn't even realize how fast the time was going by. It had already been almost four hours before they even realized it and Sara Jane was back again.
"Well! This is quite the set up!" "Yes we've been having a fabulous time!" River said, holding out her arm to Sara Jane. She pressed a couple buttons and read the readings. "Perfect. You can get out of bed in an hour. HOWEVER, take it very slowly. I've brought a wheelchair and I want you to use it if you leave this room until you have more strength." She looked at both of them intensely. "Understood?"
The both nodded and she smiled. "Good. Now, if I may borrow your sonic for a moment, Doctor." He obliged and she pointed it at the scanner and handed it back to him. "Thank you. Now, I've set the monitor to beep if something changes. If it does, call me right away with your location and I'll use Mr. Smith to get to you immediately." She hugged both of them and said her good-byes.
Also: Um...yeah I don't own ER either...I was just in need of a filler and thought it would be fun for any AK fans out there...Sweet.
