Chapter 12
Three Weeks Later:
Gabriela looked around the gym that no longer looked like a gym; it was career day at her high school and the two gyms the school had, had been transformed into an array of booths both for Universities, Collages and possible careers. It was aimed at the Juniors and Seniors but since Gabby and Leslie had gym class and it was to cold to go outside their gym teacher le their class walk around both gyms looking at the booths for the class time.
The class of thirty grade nine girls all spread out, each going off with friends to at least pretend to look at the things set up in the gym. For most of them the mere idea of life after high school was something they wouldn't worry about for two years.
"So what do you want to do? The boys are probably looking at s fire academy booth," Leslie Shay looked around the larger of the two gyms, "They've all wanted to be fire fighters for as long as I can remember."
Gabby nodded her head, she remembered they'd told her that as well, "We can go and find them," She suggested and she and Leslie began walking around the gym casually glancing at the different booths.
Passing a Chicago Police Department one Gabby barely took a second glance. She didn't want to go into policing; she waned to become a doctor and had her heart set on going to medical school.
"Hi girls," The uniformed officer greeted as they passed.
"Hi," Gabby looked at her and smiled politely. The woman, probably only a few years younger then Antonio had curly brown hair and a smile, "Are you a uniformed officer? Do you work at a District?" Curiosity got the better of her and she wondered what the woman did.
"Yeah I work at District nine. You seem to know a lot about police work,' She commented.
"My older brothers a Vice Detective," She told her, "Antonio Dawson."
"Oh," She'd heard of her brother but only due to the accident that had killed their father, a well-respected senior officer earlier in the year.
She could see the wheels truing in the older woman's mind and decided the best option for her would be to make a quick exit, "Sorry we're meeting our friends soon."
"Oh right," She squibbed some information on a piece of paper, "My names Erin Lindsay," She handed it over, "You keep that alright I know sometimes you just need someone to listen."
That was the last thing she wanted. She was getting tired of going to see all of the doctors and didn't care what everyone told her; she didn't feel any better, some times she did but most of the time she still felt like she just couldn't be herself. It was like a force, something was holding her back but she could never explain why it was.
"Thanks," She put the piece of paper in her pocket and followed Leslie to keep looking for the boys. Like they suspected they found them talking to a fire fighter at a booth, all three grasping at every word being said.
"You three idiots finished playing fire fighter?" Leslie approached them giving them each a slap on the head Gabriela laughing as she did so.
"Hey!" Kelly swiftly turned and glared at her, "You finished being annoying?"
"Your father's a firefighter," She poked his forehead, "Take these two and ask him all your questions. Let people who are old enough have a chance."
"Yeah, yeah," He rolled his eyes at her but left just the same.
"Laura!" Gabby called as she and Leslie and Matt walked into the house after school. It had become almost like a tradition. They'd all go over to her house and do homework and study as they talked and sometimes even watched Eva play although that was mostly Matt as the little girl seemed to really like him, which Leslie secretly knew made Gabby like him even more.
"Hey," Laura walked into the main part of the hallway carrying a very messy Eva, "Can you do me a huge favour? Can you give her a bath? She got into the flour, I was baking and it must have fallen and I of course she got into it. I cleaned up the kitchen but she was giving me a hard time and I really have to go."
Gabby knew Laura was over-stressed about everything. She'd bought the bakery and was busy getting t ready and making decisions on everything. If Gabby had it her way Laura wouldn't have gotten it but she knew it was her dream and now that Gabby was on the road to recovery they seemed to move on. She loved her niece but she wasn't impressed when she had to look after her all the time but she didn't dare complain, as she knew Antonio had to help out a lot with her.
"Sure," She reached out for the eight month old, "Lets go run you a bath."
As if understanding Eva began crying and wiggling around in her aunt's arms. "You may need Leslie and Matt to help. I don't mind," Laura gave Eva a kiss and hugged Gabby and then left.
"Okay you heard her," Gabby looked at her friends.
"Oh no," Leslie shook her head, "You know I don't do good with babies. You two go and get her nice and clean," She waved her hands.
"Leslie!" Gabby looked at her, "Come on!"
"I'll help Gabby," Matt looked at Eva and smiled, "How did you get all dirty huh?"
Eva stopped crying and smiled at Matt, "Mla," She cooed happily showing off her half toothless grin.
"Baby whisper" Gabby joked walking past him.
"Hey its not my fault your niece likes me better," He played along following her up the stairs and into the washroom, "Now what does she need? Toys?"
"Yeah you wanna hold her well I get the water on?"
"I can do that," Mat took her in his arms and held her, "Hey cutie," he smiled as she played with his face, pulling his ear and laughing as he made an overdramatic reaction.
"You know you're great with her," Gabby commented as she ran the water, "Even my brother thinks you are."
"Oh yeah?" Matt looked at her. He wasn't overly happy with the idea of her brother investigating his father. He'd love to see him behind bars but he knew his mother would never agree to it; he'd kill her before she ever testified or reported him.
"What do you need me to do?" Leslie appeared at the doorway with Kelly and Andy behind her.
"What're you doing here?" She asked them, "Leslie call you in for back-up?"
Andy laughed, "No we just came to hang-out."
"Does she really have a bath in the tub?" Kelly looked shocked, "What about a baby bath tub?"
"She's old enough for a real bath now," Gabby explained as she turned off the taps and reached out for Eva who went into her arms, "Now I need to take her clothes off her," She stripped Eva down and placed her into the tub the infant giggling as she began splashing around. She looked at Matt and grinned making a whimpering sound smiling as he knelt beside Gabby.
"Ha!" She splashed both of them with water and laughed as she got them wet. "Ha!"
"I like her!" Kelly said as he started to laugh, "She's funny!"
"Yeah, yeah," Gabby rolled her eyes and got baby shampoo out.
"AH!" She screamed and began moving her arms to avoid her aunt's hands.
"Eva, Eva," Matt distracted with a toy boat long enough for Gabby to wet her hair and clean it. Still looking at Matt Eva didn't even notice as Gabby cleaned the rest of her off and got a small baby towel and picked her up.
"There you go sweetie all clean," Gabby dried her off, "That wasn't so bad," picked up her clothes and carried her into her bedroom and laid her gently on the change table.
"Enough toys?" Kelly looked around the room and gasped, "It's like a toy store in here."
"Abta," Eva said in an approval as she looked at all her visitors and smiled.
"Oh she's happy now," Leslie couldn't help but smile back at her, "You just like lots of attention I think."
"Yeah she does," Gabby confirmed as she changed Eva back into her clothes and held her as they walked back downstairs.
"What do we have here?" Antonio ducked underneath the crime scene tape and approached the young uniformed officer.
"She ran into my car Sir. I stopped before I hit her but she was pretty hung-over collapsed. I called 911 but…."
"I believe you," Antonio looked and found her name, "Officer Lindsay, my names Antonio Dawson."
"Dawson?" She brightened up just a little, "I met your sister today, I was doing career day at her high-school."
"Ah," Antonio scratched his forehead, "Didn't know she wanted to be a police officer."
"I don't think so Sir, she was just walking by and we got to talking. I gave her my information too; I'm so sorry about your father and mother passing away."
"Thank you, and you don't have to call me Sir, Dawson is fine. Now I should warn you IA will be all over this but I believe you and I think it'll probably be a swift investigation.
Lindsay nodded, "I hope so. I just graduated from the academy, I want to make by f- I mean…" She didn't know what to call Hank Voight; although he never legally adopted her he was the only father she'd ever known.
"I know, and I'm sure you won't," He said, "Now about my younger sister…."
Her friends had left a few hours ago and Laura had jut gotten home and put Eva to bed. That left Gabriela all alone to stare at her medication in the cabinet in the kitchen. She hated them; it gave her all kinds of symptoms and it didn't help at all; she knew. She had started cutting herself soon after she was released from the hospital. Parts of her body no one would see were covered in bruises and bumps and scars but she didn't care. It was the only thing that was working to make her feel any less guilty about her parents dying.
She knew if Antonio had been in the car he would have saved them; that's just who he was; she wished she could have saved them too. She wanted them back so badly it hurt. She hated living here; she wanted to be back home with her parents. She really just wanted to die.
Laura didn't care about her, she had realized that quickly. Laura had always said she loved her like a little sister but when the opportunity came she left her and basically left her to raise her daughter.
Antonio wasn't much better; he was always working and hardly spoke about their parents and always changed the subject whenever she brought it up. Her friends were better and she supposed they would miss her but she figured they'd get over it.
She held a sharp knife up to her neck and was about to cut when she heard a noise; Laura was walking down the stairs "Laura!" The knife crashed onto the floor and she ran into her sister in-law's arms who didn't know what was going on. "I'm sorry!" She sobbed, "I'm sorry!"
"Ssh sweetie," She soothed, "It's okay."
"No! I almost cut myself! But I want to die the medication isn't working."
"Yes it is," She confirmed, "Gabby you didn't do anything. Your therapy and the medication it's all working."
"But I don't feel any better," She cried.
"It takes time sweetie."
"Stay with me?" She asked.
"Of course. Just let me grab some dinner. You go pick out any movie you want to watch alright?"
"Okay."
"I love you Gabby," Laura hugged her tightly.
"I love you too Laura." Gabby watched as she disappeared back into the kitchen.
