Valentines Day Blues
Chapter 12 – For the Best
Rose woke the next morning refreshed. Despite the mostly restless night, wondering what she was going to do because of her predicament she had finally come to a conclusion. She was going to attempt to pull back from Scorpius so that when her Admirer's identity was finally revealed then she was able to make a decision much more fairly.
Of course this was all going on the assumption that Scorpius was starting to feel what she was, she couldn't believe how fast the past 12 days had gone, it was almost two weeks from her break up with him and now it was like they had never been together. Rose realised that this was pretty quick to get over something that she had initially been so desperately heartbroken about but her friendship with Scorpius was so easy, so natural, the transition from friends to something more felt so…right.
Rose sighed, staring at the canopy of her bed trying desperately to quell the inner turmoil that she felt. Today was a school day, she reminded herself. She needed to get up, and get dressed and get herself ready because she had Transfiguration first and age had not softened Professor McGonagall.
Resigning herself to a very long day Rose pulled herself out of bed and made her way to the bathroom, claiming the shower before Scorpius could.

On the other side of the heads dorms, just a bathroom Scorpius woke up in a very different mood, it had been a great couple of days all things considered. He had won the Quidditch match, slept with Rose curled into his side and his chances of winning her seemed better than ever. Scorpius had been in love with Rose for so long, and it seemed that she was so close to returning his feelings, that meant that her reaction to finding out that he was her Secret Admirer was likely to be good.
He grinned up at the ceiling, knowing just what he was going to do today. He was going to make doubly sure that Rose was there to see his present and it was going to be lovely and romantic and she would surely be madly in love with him when she found out.
It never occurred to him that she might be having a problem with the fact that she had to choose between two boys because he was both of them.
When he went downstairs, just buttoning up his shirt he didn't fail to notice the way Rose blushed on the sofa at the sight and smiled a very happy, smug smile. Hoping she didn't see the giddy excitement that was hidden behind that smile.
"Hey roomy" he grinned throwing an arm around her shoulders as he plonked down on the sofa beside her. He couldn't help feeling happy when she blushed harder and moved out from under his arm.
"Scorpius I don't think you should do that, I haven't been single for very long and it looks like you're just playing on my vulnerable state."
His mouth dropped open in shock, how could she think that? "How could you think that!" he exclaimed, turning to look at her, his disbelief evident in his eyes and his tone. Rose felt very small and very bad for using that as an excuse to draw away from him. He really hadn't done anything wrong.
"I just don't think that my cousins will be very happy" she protested and even to herself that sounded like she was very badly grasping at straws.
Scorpius' good mood shattered and he stood up abruptly heading for the door. "Whatever Rose" he muttered as the portrait slammed shut behind him making Rose wince.

Rose could not shake the awkward feeling for the rest of the day. Her skin crawled whenever Scorpius was in the same room as her and she could barely eat anything at any of the mealtimes. She sat there and stared miserably at her plate and pushed the food around, the few bites that she did have tasted like sawdust in her mouth and did not settle easily in her stomach.
In DADA they had been paired up and Rose had been completely distracted and unable to fight. She had ended up taking every single hit that he threw at her and she felt that she deserved it.
By the time dinner rolled around she was less miserable and more frustrated and angry, this decision had been made so that it would be the best for everyone. So that she wouldn't hurt anyone too much at the end of this. Instead she had wound up having the worst day that she had had in the past two weeks.
She looked up and found two sets of eyes on her, first were Scorpius' but she could not see his expression from across the hall, she hoped that he was just as miserable as she was, because he had completely over reacted in her opinion and was being unreasonable to say the least.
The second belonged to her far too nosy little cousin Lily who had turned from her conversation with Hugo specifically to stare at her in a really annoying way.
"What?" Rose snapped, having no humour for annoying cousins who wouldn't leave her alone. It wasn't like she didn't have a reason to be so upset and she couldn't bring herself to feel bad for taking it out on Lily, she hadn't started the conversation. The girl had brought it on herself.
"There's no need to have a go at me, just because you've done something"
"How do you know that I have done anything wrong, it could be anyone, why does it have to be my fault?"
"Stop acting like a stroppy brat Rose." Lily frowned but her tone stayed calm. "You and I both know that you only get like this when you feel guilty and as it is you have been flinching every time that Scorpius has walked into the room today so either he has said something to you or you have said something to him. You should fix it before it gets too far. The two of you have only just started becoming friends, don't want to ruin it so quickly." And with that Lily returned to her previous conversation.
Rose sat staring at the now turned back of her younger cousin and wondered whether she could get away with strangling her, and if there was a word for killing your cousin. Cousinicide? Probably not but it was good enough.
With a sigh she turned back to her plate, just as stubborn as her father Rose didn't want to admit that her cousin was right because that would make her wrong. With another long suffering sigh Rose looked up again and saw that Scorpius' seat was empty. Maybe now would be a good time for them to make up, it wasn't like she was going to get any eating done anyway. Her stomach was still feeling bad even though the rest of her was just angry.
She stood, ignoring the questions of her relations and started up the many staircases that led to the small tower that the heads called home. When she reached it and said the password she found the common room to be empty, there was a fire crackling in the grate but all the chairs were empty and it didn't look like they had recently been used.
Rose went upstairs and knocked gently on Scorpius' door waiting outside for an answer, but there was nothing. She knocked harder and waited again. Nothing. Annoyance overtook again and she opened the door but was surprised to find that his room and bed were also empty.
Rose reeled back and shutting the door she went back down the stairs, standing in front of the door that stood between the two staircases.
A chill raced down her spine, interrupting her questioning thoughts. What was that? A breeze? Rose realised that this spot was much colder than the rest of the common room and she frowned as she felt the draft coming from the door. Opening it she was shocked to find it hid a stone staircase and not a load of brooms and other cleaning materials as she had previously thought.
Rose started up the stairs and could not believe that she had noticed this before; there was a roof to the heads tower where she could go up and look at the stars. When she reached the top, she came out onto a small circular roof with a wall surrounding it. In the centre of this roof was her missing head boy, laying down a blanket.
"There you are" he said, calmly, when he saw her "I was just about to come and get you."
"I was looking for you, but I didn't even know that this place existed. I really should look around more, get my head out of those books." She chuckled awkwardly and a small silence fell across the roof. Rose took a deep breath. "Scorpius I just want to say that I am really sorry for what I said this morning, it was really stupid-"
"It's okay Rose, I was actually going to apologise too. I overreacted this morning, I am sorry if my flirting offended you in anyway and I could see today that you were really upset about what I had said. You barely touched your food."
"I know! And that's really bad for me" she laughed back, feeling the awkward air dissipate as Scorpius sat down on the blanket and patted for her to sit beside him.
"Luckily I had the foresight to ask some of the elves to make you up some" he pushed a picnic basket into view and Rose immediately sat down. Now that she was no longer guilty the hunger that had been avoiding her all day returned now in full force.
"You are good to me" she grinned, digging in.
"I know," he laughed at his own secret meaning but she didn't notice the stress on the words. He let her eat in peace for a while having some himself.
Once they were both done they cleared up and lay back, looking up at the stars and talked about anything and everything, it was one of the best conversations that Rose had ever had. She felt like she could tell him anything and whilst she should have been scared at such feelings they secretly elated her.
The night was very suddenly interrupted though, as an owl flew over the tower and dropped a slip of paper onto Roses stomach. She felt for the slip and held it up so it dominated her vision, it was in the same slanting script as her Secret Admirer.
Written in the stars…
A million miles away…
A message to the woman….

Frowning slightly Rose moved the paper unable to understand his meaning before she looked up once more at the night sky and her mouth fell open.
The stars. They had moved, or someone had added new ones, for now, written in the stars was her name. Rose. Spelled out in the heavens as she watched from earth.
"Well," said Scorpius with a chuckle lying beside her. "Someone certainly wants to impress doesn't he."
SOOOOOOOOOO? Wha did ya thunk? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know :)
