Sorry about the lateness of the chapter, it took me a while to write it up. But thanks for the reviews, it's much appreciated!
Spencer stirred into consciousness the next morning to the strong smell of coffee and the sensation of something warm pressing against her. She shuffled closer, mumbling under her breath as she pulled the source of the warmth closer to her body. She'd assumed it was Paige but her brow furrowed slightly in confusion when her hand came into contact with the distinct contours of Emily's body. She opened her eyes and blinked down at Emily only to find she was still sleeping. She pressed her lips briefly to the top of Emily's head before she forced herself to get up and pad quietly out of the room.
"Hey." Spencer rasped when she found Paige in the kitchen in the process of making coffee. "How long have you been up?"
"Maybe an hour." Paige answered quietly, having heard Spencer walk out of the bedroom. She glanced over her shoulder and smiled softly as she watch Spencer slowly approach. "I was going to wake you up a few minutes ago but you both seemed too comfortable to wake up. And then I was going to make breakfast but I'm not great at cooking."
"I'm glad you didn't." Spencer admitted jokingly as she came to a stop next to Paige. She wasn't sure how she was supposed to act around her now, whether she was supposed to go back to how they had acted while they had been together or whether they should act like they had before Paige knew the truth about their relationship. "Um…how are you feeling this morning?"
"Better." Paige said softly, finally pressing the button to turn the coffee maker on. She turned to Spencer, leaning her hip against the counter. "But still a little bit confused about everything that's going on. It seems kind of surreal, you know?"
Spencer nodded and reached up to open the cupboard above her head, taking two cups out. She figured after the events of yesterday Emily would want to stay in bed for a while. "In what way do you mean?"
"Well yesterday morning I was under the impression that I was single and in the space of 14 hours I learned that I have not one girlfriend but two. It's just odd. Not really in a bad way, just in a way that's confusing for me." Paige said. She didn't want Spencer to get the wrong idea but she wanted to be honest about the way she was feeling.
"Well maybe I could explain it to you." Spencer suggested, subconsciously mirroring Paige's position. "If there's anything you want to know about our relationship, you can ask me. Or Emily, if you're more comfortable with asking her. We want to help you with this, Paige. We know it must be confusing for you and we're more than willing to give you however much time you need to process all of this."
Paige nodded slowly, nervously nibbling her bottom lip. "So how does this work? Our relationship, I mean?"
"It works just like any other relationship." Spencer was uncertain about how to answer the question. "It's pretty simple really. Emily is kind of a buffer between us sometimes but it's pretty normal otherwise."
"We need a buffer?"
"You think we wouldn't?" Spencer raised a sceptical eyebrow.
Paige laughed under her breath. "That's a good point." She noticed the coffee was finished brewing and she moved to pour it into the two cups. She was silent for a long moment until she finished what she was doing and moved the coffee pot back. "So I think I get it now. The things that didn't make sense before like why Emily was so upset when I kissed Hanna."
"You didn't know." Spencer said softly, noticing the guilt that flitted across Paige's face. "You couldn't have known. But yeah, that was why Emily was upset and that's why we were so angry with Hanna. She did know."
"So this thing between us isn't a secret?" Paige asked, lifting her coffee to her lips. She blew lightly on it, watching Spencer intently.
"Hanna, Aria, Caleb and our parents know." Spencer answered carefully. "But we don't really broadcast it if that's what you're asking. People have a problem with relationships like this sometimes, you know? Not that we're ashamed of it at all."
"I don't think my parents would be okay with this." Paige frowned at the thought of her parents knowing what was going on. She was surprised they hadn't ditched her completely. They were distant of course but they had always been that way.
"They're not, neither are mine." Spencer sighed, recalling the night her parents dropped by. "Yours pretend that Emily and I are your roommates. Mine threw me out and refused to talk to me again unless I go back to being 'normal'. Both kind of suck. Emily's parents are great though."
Paige tilted her head slightly in confusion. "So why did your parents come here last week?"
"They wanted me to leave you." Spencer said with a roll of her eyes. She was still furious about what her parents had the nerve to suggest. "They tried to bribe me with my trust fund."
"I'm sorry." Paige said quietly, watching the mixture of emotions that crossed Spencer's face. At least her parents still talked to her, apparently Spencer's were not that understanding, or couldn't bury their heads in the sand at least.
"It's not your fault." Spencer took a sip of her hot coffee before setting it down again. "Is there anything else you want to ask me about us? Emily can answer more about what happened before I joined your relationship but I'll answer whatever I can."
"Actually there is." Paige glanced away for a moment before her gaze shifted awkwardly back to Spencer. "The time you walked in on me and freaked out. What was that about?"
Spencer laughed sheepishly. "That was me trying not to jump you. I wasn't freaked out, my self-control was waning."
"Oh." Paige felt her cheeks heat up at the revelation. "I see. So you must have told Emily about that, right? Even though you said that you didn't?"
"Kind of." Spencer recalled what had happened in the bedroom between herself and Emily and felt a hint of guilt creep up on her. "I don't think that's a conversation we're ready for."
Paige nodded, seemingly satisfied by the answers she had been given. "So what does this mean for us now? I um…I'm not sure how to act around you now. Are we still friends or am I your girlfriend?"
Spencer hesitated for a moment. "It's whatever you're comfortable with, Paige. We're not going to push you into doing anything you don't want to do. If you want we can start over. We can try to rebuild our relationship from the start."
"I like that idea." Paige hesitated for a couple of seconds before she shuffled forward slightly. "You kissed me last night."
"I did." Spencer confirmed, the corners of her lips perking up ever so slightly. "I remember it well."
"So I was thinking that maybe…"
"Yes." Spencer answered without waiting for Paige to get her words out, earning herself a laugh from her girlfriend. She smirked at her own eagerness but she wasn't about to regret it. "Whatever you want."
"Okay." Paige licked her lips and stepped forward. Her hand moved to tentatively rest on Spencer's hip as she pressed close to her. Her eyes flicked to Spencer's lips and she took a shuddering breath. "Okay…"
Spencer was about to tell Paige that she didn't have to do anything she wasn't ready for when Paige finally closed the distance between them and kissed her softly. Spencer inhaled sharply, her hand moving to Paige's shoulder but she forced herself to stay still, letting Paige keep control over the kiss. As much as she wanted to push back and steer the kiss in the direction she wanted it to go she didn't want to risk freaking Paige out. It was only when Paige pulled away with a slightly worried expression on her face that Spencer realized she had neglected to kiss her back.
"Spence?" Paige whispered uncertainly.
"Sorry, you just surprised me." Spencer decided to take some control and closed the distance again, her lips finding Paige's. Paige returned the kiss without hesitation, her fingers ever so slightly digging into Spencer's hips. The kiss was noticeably more tentative than their kisses usually were but Spencer figured it was only natural that Paige would be more cautious. She felt Paige start to ease herself away and she lessened her grip, allowing her to do so.
"It feels familiar." Paige said thoughtfully, dampening her lips. "Like I've done that before. But kind of unfamiliar at the same time, you know?"
"I know. We've done that a lot." Spencer smiled warmly at the observation. "Maybe not exactly like that but similar."
"Not exactly like that?" Paige tilted her head in contemplation. "What do you mean?"
"Well we all have different dynamics." Spencer explained, wanting Paige to understand as much as possible. "I have a different dynamic with you then I do with Emily and you have a different dynamic with me than you do with Emily."
Paige nodded slowly. She supposed that made sense. "Okay but in what way is our relationship different than my relationship is with Emily?"
"I guess you could say we're gentler with Emily." Spencer said, glancing at the bedroom door. It wasn't entirely shut so she made sure to keep her voice down. "Not that we're really rough with each other, it's just that our relationship is built more on…raw passion I guess you could say. So we sometimes get carried away. Which isn't to say that I don't love you as much as I love Emily, because I do, it's just different."
Paige hesitated at the mention of the word love but she didn't push it. "I think that makes sense. Kind of. I guess I'll find out eventually."
"If that's what you want." Spencer said, visibly brightening at the prospect of their relationship going back to normal someday. "Emily and I don't want to rush you though, we want you to take however long you need to be okay with this. With us."
Paige felt confused for a moment. How could she not be okay with them? She finally had the girl she'd been practically in love with for years. Her attraction to Spencer had started back then too, though she had no idea what had happened in the meantime. They used to be fairly competitive and that was pretty much it. "Hey, Spencer?" she asked, a bashful smiled tugging at her lips. "Do you mind if I go and wake Emily up? I'm assuming she doesn't want to sleep until noon."
Spencer's mind took a dive to the gutter but she tried to look unfazed. She grinned softly and gave a small nod. "I think she would like that."
Paige started to head to the bedroom but she faltered when she realized that Spencer wasn't going with her. "Aren't you coming, Spence?"
Spencer gave a small shake of her head. "I'm okay. I think I'll let you do this. Besides, I'm drinking my coffee." She held up the coffee in her hand.
"Okay." Paige flashed Spencer a quick smile before she headed into the bedroom. She found Emily sprawled across the bed, the covers tangled around her body as she reached across the bed for something or someone that wasn't there. Moving onto the bed, Paige hesitated for a moment, her fingers trailing softly over Emily's arm. "Em?"
Emily muttered in her sleep and turned onto her back but she didn't say anything.
"Em." Paige hovered over Emily and gently brushed a strand of hair behind her ear. "Wow, you really are a deep sleeper, huh?" she hesitated for a moment before she leaned down and gently pressed her lips against Emily's. "Emily." She whispered softly against her lips before kissing her again. Merely seconds passed before she felt Emily stir beneath her. She was about to pull away when she felt Emily begin to return the kiss, her hand shifting to the back of Paige's head to hold her close.
"Hmm…" Emily pulled back with a sleepy smile and gazed up at Paige. "Am I still dreaming? Because if I am I think I'd prefer not to wake up."
"No." Paige shook her head with a soft smile. "You wouldn't wake up so I figured I would try a different method."
"I'm glad you did." Emily turned her head to Spencer's side of the bed. "Where's Spencer?"
"She's in the kitchen." Paige answered quietly, still hovering over Emily. "You overslept so I asked her if I could wake you up."
"Oh." Emily turned to Paige again and smiled softly. "So…you're okay with this? Us? Have you processed?"
"A little bit. Not much." Paige said softly. "It's a lot to take in. I um…I like the kissing part."
"Yeah?" Emily couldn't seem to wipe the smile from her face. Any progress at all was good, she couldn't expect too much from Paige after only a night. "I like the kissing part too. If you want to keep doing the kissing part, I would be okay with that."
"Really?" Paige's eyes slipped down to Emily's lips and she slowly leaned down.
"Really." Emily breathed out, leaning up slightly to capture Paige's lips with her own. She slowly eased back down onto the bed and Paige instinctively followed, not wanting to break the connection.
Paige pulled back for a split second to wet her lips before she moved back in again, kissing Emily tentatively. Her movements were uncertain as she shifted further on top of her, her hand moving to rest carefully on Emily's cheek.
Emily was tempted to deepen the kiss but she forced herself to hold back. Unlike the previous night she was determined to control herself and let Paige set the pace. She settled for the movement of their lips against each other, coupled with the occasional tentative sweep of her tongue across soft, unglossed lips.
"Incoming!" Spencer's voice sounded from the other room but Paige didn't seem to hear her and Emily paid no attention, figuring that Spencer was just warning them that she was about to walk in on them, something that wasn't abnormal. Spencer was probably just giving a warning for Paige's sake.
"Hey, you guys didn't waste any time!"
Paige pulled away at the sound of Hanna's voice and she shifting quickly away so that she was sitting on the bed next to Emily, instead of looming over her.
Hanna jumped onto the bed and Emily glared up at her. "Are you serious right now, Hanna?"
Hanna laughed and bounced down next to Emily. "No 'thank you for helping to save my relationship, Hanna'? Fine, be that way." She flashed Paige a quick grin. "I told you. Aren't you glad you listened to me now?"
Paige smiled bashfully and gave a small nod of her head.
"Hanna, leave her alone." Spencer ordered, walking into the bedroom. She narrowed her eyes when she found Hanna kneeling on the bed. "And get off my bed."
"Screw you, Hastings." Hanna smirked at Spencer. "You need to start being nice to me. Nicer to me."
"I let you in, didn't I?" Spencer said with a roll of her eyes. "Not that I expected you to stroll into my bedroom."
"While your girlfriends were busy making out you mean?"
"Hanna." Emily warned.
"Um…I'm going to get you some coffee, Em. I'll be right back." Paige stood up, her face slightly flushed with embarrassment though she didn't look in the least bit upset.
Spencer and Emily waited until Paige walked out of the room before they turned to glare at Hanna.
"What?" Hanna asked innocently, flopping down onto her back next to Emily. "I didn't say anything. Besides, you know it's true. They were totally making out, I saw it with my own eyes." She, glanced between them, smiling softly. "So you guys are working things out with her now?"
"Yeah, we are." Spencer answered, glancing at Emily. "It's going to take some time but she knows everything now and I think we're making progress. Faster progress than I thought we would make."
"I'm happy for you." Hanna smiled warmly. "You realize you're technically dating a fifteen year old though, right? That's kind of creepy."
"We're not dating a fifteen year old." Emily said defensively. "She's just…she doesn't have all of her memories."
"So she's mentally fifteen, that's what I was saying." Hanna said with a nod. "Which means you're dating a fifteen year old. She's underage and you're creepy."
"Hanna, you made out with her then encouraged her to come back!" Spencer exclaimed in frustration. "Can you really judge us?"
"So I'm the hot older woman." Hanna smirked smugly. "Besides, I only kissed her once. You two are kissing her a lot more than that."
"Because we're in a stable relationship with her." Spencer frowned, crossing her arms in front of her chest. "And she's not fifteen physically, just mentally."
"Creeeepy." Hanna drawled.
Emily rolled her eyes and grabbed her pillow from behind her head to hit Hanna. Hanna saw the hit coming and lifted her arm to keep the blow from hitting her face directly. "Rude."
TBC.
