The ED is very quiet today. I finally finish up the mountain of paperwork which has been building dangerously high on my desk all week. I'm still having issues trying to get the doctor/paperwork balance right. I look back at my empty desk and smile to myself. Nick would be proud.
I glance over at the clock on the wall. It is just past 5. Smiling to myself again I pick up the bouquet of flowers off the windowsill and walk out of my office and into the main hospital. I walk over to the reception desk Noel and Louise are bent over something, writing furiously. I can't help the expression of happiness that crosses my face as I approach. At the sound of my voice Noel's head snaps up so quickly, he looks like a little boy who has been caught doing something naughty.
'Have you finished with that yet? I need to get going. I'm going to be late no doubt. Has everyone signed this now?'
'Yes Doctor Hanna. Here. Give Mr Jordan and Yvonne our love won't you?' Louise slides the card, which she has slipped into the envelope across the desk to me.
'Thanks. Yes of course I will. Is Charlie here yet? It's not like him to be late'
'Actually he just called, asked if you could wait five minutes as he has to pick something up on the way here? He shouldn't be long'
'Doesn't look like I have much choice, does it? '
'No it doesn't Dr Hanna'.
The sound of the familiar voice makes me turn around. Charlie is stood there with a massive grin on his face but in front of him is Nick, who is pushing Yvonne in her wheelchair, who has Chloe in her arms. For several seconds I can't speak until Max taps me on the shoulder which brings me back to reality.
'What? How? I thought I was meant to be meeting you?'
'I know but we thought we would surprise you instead and anyway it's good for Chloe's social skills to go out rather than stay at home.'
I walk over to Nick and wrap my arms around him before doing the same to Yvonne and Chloe, who puts her arms out to me and claps them giggling happily.
'She looks a lot better now, a lot happier and healthier. Look at you two as well. I never thought I'd see Nick Jordan as a Dad. How are you finding it?'
'It's brilliant I love it. Just getting to spend time with Chloe is amazing and something I thought I'd never get time to do. She is a lot happier and likes to play a lot and she is just starting to learn to swim and will now walk on reigns. She is still very quiet though and doesn't like to be left too long without me or Yvonne.'
'If you ask me he spoils his little princess a bit too much. We are forever doting on her, but she needs it after what she went through. My Mum helps out a bit now too. I am trying to build bridges with her and she loves having a granddaughter and spoils her, the same as Nick. We just thought we'd bring her in to show you how far she has come in the last month and to thank you for everything you did for me following the riots. Without you we wouldn't be so happy and we wouldn't have Chloe. Would we?'
'We're an Emergency Department and that's what we do, there is no need to thank us, honestly Yvonne'.
I can't stop smiling as my oldest friend and the woman of his dreams smile at each other and share a tender kiss. I never thought I would see him this happy. All of a sudden from behind me I hear someone start clapping and soon everyone else joins in leaving me to wonder if I'll ever find someone who I can love as much as the three of them love each other.
THE END
