A/N I am sorry for such a long time without an upload. I wanted to make sure that the poll had time to be voted on. I decided to close it down as this chapter onwards will have the pairing that got the most votes. It was very close between two different goddesses while one was left in the dust. It shall be revealed in this chapter.
Chapter 12
Perseus' POV (Teutoburg Forest 9AD)
I was happy. We would win. Varus the Roman general was a fool. He was marching through enemy territory; he was not in a battle line. He had left his army open to attack from the local Germanic tribes. Worst of all he had not bothered to send out any scouts to see if there were any troops in the area. He was either stupid, deluded, over confident or suicidal. I could not choose which. This Roman army was arranged into three different legions. There were also some auxiliary troops and some cavalry with them.
We were outnumbered but had several serious advantages. The Germans were in their home territory. They were led by a commander who was sent by his father to Rome as tribute. His name was Ariminus. He was given the customary education that all Roman tributes were given. He was unfortunately not fully Romanised and he returned to gather the tribes together. He knew how the Roman army worked. He knew the strengths and the weaknesses.
His tactic was brilliant, surround and harasses them. They would be trapped. He had laid traps all along the route the Romans were taking. Harass them until they do something rash.
I was currently with a collection of skirmishers. We were waiting for the signal. The signal would reveal the time to attack. On the other side of the ridge were we lay was the Roman force. They were in marching formation while being spread over roughly 15 miles. They would be easy pickings for us.
We waited. There was a horn sound from in the distance. I slowly got up and the skirmishers followed me. When we rose over the ridge we saw the Romans before us. They were milling around in confusion. I saw the Germans lined up along this ridge and the one opposite. I had a sudden feeling of déjà vu. I had been here before. Trapping a Roman army between weaker forces. The other general had been Hannibal though. A great man with a depressing end.
The men around me were going forward slowly. The romans were out of range for them. I shrugged and lobbed a javelin. It hit a Roman through the head. The men around me looked in shock at the throw.
"What, I have had more years than you have to practise." They nodded. I had become a myth among the Gauls and subsequently the Germans. They spoke about me and my efforts against Rome. It therefore took me quite a lot of persuasion to get them to believe who I was.
Time passed in a blur, not to dissimilar to the javelins. The pattern was the same. Throw your javelins. Then pull back and get more. Eventually they started to pull back to a central point. There were several hundred grouped together. I looked at them. I nodded and the men all around me came forward. We hugely outnumbered them at this area. It should be easy pickings. I looked at them to see if there was a leader. I was easy to pick out as I was wearing the typical Corinthian helmet.
I saw a flash of silver. A brief thought crossed my mind and then I thought, no, the hunters would not be there in a battle full of men. Let alone romans as most of them are Greek.
I led the German tribesmen towards the mass of Roman soldiers. When we got in arrow range I knew that there were no hunters there.
I pulled out my last javelin and threw it hard. The surprise on the Roman's face was almost funny as I made an impossible throw that killed the two men in front of him. I broke into a sprint. Drawing my sword and beheading the still shocked man in one move I then swept through the men. I realised that some of the auxiliaries were Gallic. When they saw me they gasped in fear and threw down their weapons. In their stories I was invincible. The Gauls then watched as the Germanic tribesmen let them be and killed all of the Romans around them. I finally got to the centre and my sword was stopped by a familiar teenager with a hunting knife. I recognised her as Artemis in an instant.
A second later I shouted, "Pull back." The Germans knew better then to disobey me. When they had gone I was surrounded by some defenceless Gauls who looked at me in awe. Some adolescent girls who had no clue who I was and some Romans who charged me. They came up the hill and I quickly turned to them. Out of the corner of my mouth I said, "Give me a second milady." Out of the corner of my eye I saw her smirk.
As I met the Romans I heard a girl ask. "Why do we not attack milady?"
"Who should we attack, the Greek hero of Troy or some Roman men who have done nothing but flirt with us." the girls gasped and I heard a male voice.
"But Artemis if this is Perseus then should you not hate him?"
"Why would I hate him?"
"He attacked and almost killed your brother a god."
"He also had a right to as his brother had just been killed, and he also founded the hunters themselves so I feel like I owe him a debt." She answered.
I smirked while kicking the last Roman to the floor. "I am so sorry milady about the intrusion. May I ask as to why you are in the middle of a Roman army?"
"I was commanded by my father's Roman form to help Varus to tame the Germans. He felt I should do it as I was most in touch with the wild." She answered.
I nodded, "Ah." I paused "Do you mind if you leave this battle? You will lose and I would not want any harm to befall the hunters."
There was a laugh, "Always the hero Perseus." I looked up to see Zoe smirking.
"I am here to take my revenge on Rome for what it did to Greece. I see nothing heroic about killing thousands of men." I said the last bit in a whisper.
There was an awkward silence. "So will you leave?" I asked.
Artemis thought about is before slowly nodding. "Yes we shall go."
"Thank you milady." I said. I ran back to the Germanic tribesmen. Flavus Ariminus' brother was waiting for me.
"What were you doing?" he asked.
I turned and pointed, "That is one of the goddesses of my religion, she is Artemis you would know her better as Dianna. Those are her hunters. I would request that you let them go free. Not only would it be very difficult to kill them with the goddess there, one of them is a friend of mine." Flavus nodded.
"That makes sense. They can go."
I gestured to Artemis and she led the hunters off the hill and they walked off the battle field.
A/N I hope you liked it.
If you did not realise who won the poll here are the results.
In third with five votes was Athena,
In second with nine was Hestia.
And in first was Artemis with ten.
I was personally surprised. I would have thought that Hestia and Athena were the other way round. I was a little glad that Hestia did not win as I am not sure how I would have done it.
Thanks for all of the votes though.
Thanks for reading and please review if you liked it.
