A/N Hello all! So it's finally starting to come together with the main storyline. Like I said, will be weaving in and out, possibly adding some and taking some away. Trying to stay from Asher's point of view but let me know if it gets more confusing than not. Next chapter will gloss over some events in this chapter.
As always, C&C is welcome. Thank you to everyone who has stuck with me so far :)
Carencro was a small city in the heart of Louisiana, the heat drifting lazily through it. Asher walked with her backpack on towards the outskirts, making her way to the Cajun diner. Her smock was on and her name tag "Grace" scrolled in permanent marker across it. Shifting her pack she rounded the corner, her phone suddenly ringing.
"Hey Dean." She replied smoothly turning a corner onto a dirt road.
"Happy! How's it going?"
"It's going. You?" Asher responded as she checked her watch.
"Ehh… you wouldn't believe the crap we've seen in the past couple weeks. Kevin is getting closer on that tablet though. So that's something I guess." He sounded extremely bored.
"You ok? You sound worn down."
"I'm fine. Just checking up on you. Benny doing ok?"
"Yeah he's fine." Asher stopped suddenly, a figure walking towards her. "You want to talk to him? He's walking towards me right now."
"Nah, I'll let you go. Gotta get back on the job." Dean replied quickly.
"You just said you got done with a job." She asked suddenly confused.
"Talk to you later Ash." The phone beeped as he hung up.
She looked down at her phone, unable to shake her confusion as Benny walked up. He smiled cheerfully at her.
"I told you not to go walking to work by yourself. " He scolded gently.
"I'm fine Benny. No worries. Dean just called to check in. Seems like the boys are pretty busy." She replied starting to walk again. "Come on, we're going to be late."
The diner was slow that night as Asher wiped the tables down. Only two customers remained and Benny was taking care of the back area while she cleaned up the dining room. Elizabeth walked out from the office suddenly, folding her apron up and stowing it behind the counter. They exchanged a few words about closing up shop before she walked out for the night. Asher smiled to herself, finally feeling normal again. She had a job and a bed of her own, the start of a new life.
"Hey." A customer said suddenly, startling Asher out of her thoughts. He tapped his coffee mug on the table to signify it was empty. She smiled and headed Benny off before he could grab the coffee pot. Filling the man's cup slowly she nodded at him and returned back to the counter. The man seemed peculiar to her and she gave Benny a strange look.
"Hey Grace, I can take it from here. You head on home now." He said to her suddenly.
"You sure Roy? Don't care to walk me home tonight?" She replied to Benny.
"Just make sure you take your pack home with you like I told you about." He replied pointing to her bag behind the counter. She bit her lip knowing something was up. The only reason she really carried a pack was because it held her knife and gun. Asher finally nodded in acceptance and offered him a smile before grabbing the pack and punching out. The man watched her as she went out the door.
The next morning Asher got dressed for work as usual, making a small breakfast of eggs and toast. As she skipped out the door she noticed the heat once more, stifling the air. Her phone rang before she even got down the road and she stopped suddenly to answer it.
"Hey Benny. What's up?" She answered warmly. The past few weeks he had kept up with her, getting her a job at the diner that his granddaughter owned. He hadn't been by her motel for a few days and she had been slightly worried, only seeing him at work.
"Hey sweetheart… I just wanted to let you know I'll be gone fishing for a few days so don't you worry. I've checked the area out and everything seems ok. You just give me a call if you need anything you hear me?" He replied, his southern drawl steadily skipping over syllables.
Asher frowned, "You ok Benny?" It was strange after the way he acted last night for him to suddenly disappear.
"I'm fine, now take care of yourself and I'll be back in two days time. Don't go looking for no trouble ya hear?"
The phone clicked on his side of the line and she looked down at her phone. The screen showed his name blinking and then went back to the home screen. She sighed and shoved the phone back in her pocket. She began walking again, nervously playing with the pendent Castiel had given her that was dangling loosely around her neck. The roads turned to dirt and trees began to cluster, hugging it tightly. Her feet kicked up the dust and she didn't realize how far she had walked when the diner loomed in front of her. Asher stopped suddenly biting her lip. Her fears were confirmed as she laid eyes on the black Impala that sat parked outside. Her posture went from confident to defeated and she started toward the door of the diner. Before she could get there Dean walked out and stopped suddenly.
"Asher? What are you doing here?" He said, obviously not expecting her to be around. He had never mentioned this sudden trip out to Louisiana the day before.
"It's Grace." She replied pointing to her name tag, "And I could ask you the same thing." She walked forward until she was only feet from him. "Where's Benny?"
"You're telling me you haven't seen him?" Dean asked incredulously.
"Not today. He just called a few minutes ago and told me he's 'going fishing'" She replied shrugging.
"Great. I see he is doing a great job looking out for you." Dean replied sarcastically. "Get in the car." He started to walk towards the Impala and stopped, noticing Asher not budging.
"No." She said defiantly. "I've got a job and I'm not leaving Elizabeth behind if something is going on."
"Ash… Look. I can't leave you here if things are happening." He replied dropping his hands to his side in a minor defeat.
"What 'things' are happening?" She asked, her interest suddenly peaked.
"Benny is missing and bodies are turning up." Dean said almost in an inaudible whisper.
"It's not Benny, I would know… He's not touched anyone." Asher replied, unable to wrap her head around it.
"I realize that, but try convincing Sammy." Dean leaned against the car looking slightly disheveled.
She walked towards him and took a place beside him, suddenly feeling bad. The Winchesters had done well to mask any tension they had had when she had been with them but sometimes she could still feel it. "You guys gonna be ok?" She asked.
"We always figure out a way. Don't worry about it… Look I'll go find Benny. Get in there and for the love of God, make some pecan pie would you?" Dean replied sarcastically, a goofy grin on his face.
"Only if you promise to swing by tonight to get a bite." Asher replied smartly, punching him lightly in the arm and leaning forward off of the car.
"I can't promise that." He replied smiling.
"I know." She said returning a grin and turning on her heel, heading in to the diner.
The night went by slowly and Elizabeth had stayed to close the diner down with Asher since she had never done it by herself. They both sat at the counter contemplating closing early, both partaking in the pecan pie Asher had made.
"So," Elizabeth began, "You and Roy known each other for a long time? Seem pretty tight knit."
Asher laughed softly, "You wouldn't believe it but no. I think we came together because we were both alone really." She took a bite of the pie, savoring it.
"I didn't realize you were… um… you know. Going steady." Elizabeth replied taken aback.
Asher contemplated for a moment before realizing what she had said. "Oh nooo… Noooo… He's just saved my ass before, I'm just along for the ride for now. Nothing…erm… Romantic."
Before Elizabeth could reply the same man that was in the night before strolled through the door. He smiled at them both before taking a seat. Elizabeth went over to him with a coffee cup and coffee, offering a menu. He waved the idea off and asked for a slice of pie. Asher plated a slice before she even got to the counter and gave her a fork quickly. When she had returned to the table the man asked to borrow her phone for a moment to call his wife. She nodded reaching into her apron and handing it to him before shuffling away from him. Asher looked to her, a questioning look in her eyes.
The man talked on the phone for a few minutes, his words hushed and Elizabeth approached him again to take his plate. He grabbed her wrist suddenly and Asher stood upright her nerves thrumming. He let go of Elizabeth sensing a tension in the air.
"I wasn't finished yet." He replied.
She nodded and rushed back over to Asher who hinted to her to stay back for a minute. He hung up the phone and stood up with a smile on his face. Asher put her arm out in front of Elizabeth to guard her, not sure what the man's issue was. As he turned and approached him he pulled a set of cuffs out and Asher felt her heart start to race. Her pack was much too far away and he was standing inches from her.
"The boys said you had a temper." He said smartly, suddenly pulling a gun out of his pocket. In a flash, he hit Asher hard in the head with it knocking her out cold.
Asher came to in the dark diner, her hands crossed and cuffed to a thick steel pipe that ran along the edge of the booths. Her head throbbed she glanced around, her vision blurred. She pulled hard on the cuffs trying to break free but nothing was working. A sudden noise peaked her attention and Asher looked over to find the man standing with Elizabeth tied to a chair.
"Who are you?" She asked through the haze. He started toward her.
"Well. That's a good question. The question is who are you? Funny Sam mentioned keeping an eye on you but he wouldn't say why." He paused squatting in front of her. "My question is, why would the Winchesters have you watched by a vampire. Unless of course…" He stopped suddenly furrowing his brow. Asher pulled on the cuffs harder as he pulled out a knife, her skin was starting to chaff from the metal. He slid the blade across his forearm smiling. She looked at him confused and his smile turned to a frown. "Hmm… Not a vamp. How disappointing." He stood up and started to walk away. "You'd be blood thirsty in an instant." He stopped again turning on his heel to face her again. "How rude of me. Crazy Martin is what they call me."
"Great…" She muttered under her breath, looking around to find a way out of her restraints. Headlights pierced the windows and Asher's breathing hitched. "Who is that?"
Martin didn't reply but hid behind the counter. Her mind was swimming though rapid thoughts trying to sort through the situation and her breathing began to get harder as she pulled with more force on the cuffs. The headlights cut out and the footsteps were almost inaudible to her ears. She froze as the door creaked open and Benny stepped in.
"Benny you have to get out." Asher stammered as his eyes swept the scene, finally landing on Elizabeth. But Martin was fast and he got up quickly, his knife at Elizabeth's throat.
"Lay your arms down you unholy thing!" Martin stuttered pressing the blade tighter to Elizabeth's throat.
"You got me here, now. Why don't you just let them go and walk away." Benny replied glancing towards Asher who was beginning to look more angry than scared.
"I don't think so." Martin said, his arm starting to get a little shaky.
Benny slowly approached him, "You realize I'm not asking."
"I realize that completely."
"Roy, what's going on?" Elizabeth finally spoke.
"It's okay, Lizzie. He ain't gonna hurt you. Ain't that right?" Benny took a light step forward, "Come on, now. I got no beef with you, you got no beef with me."
"I got plenty of beef with your kind." Martin stammered, looking back to see Asher glowering at him, oddly silent.
Asher turned her attention back to her cuffs, the conversation blurring in and out. The pole was far too thick and her wrists began to bleed from her pulling on it. Elizabeth let out a whimper and Asher's attention snapped back to see that Martin had cut her neck so Benny would show his true self. Instead he had turned away, ashamed of not being able to control it.
"Tell her Benny! Tell her how you're her long lost grandpappy! Tell her about all the dead you left behind!" Martin said standing up, his voice wavering. Benny turned back to face him slowly.
"He didn't do it you crazy fuck. Don't ruin her life on account of us. Let her go and we're all yours." Asher said suddenly, desperation lacing her every word.
"You shut up!" Martin yelled, suddenly losing his cool only to get a glare in return.
"What do you want then?" Benny asked suddenly, Martin's attention turning back to him.
"Isn't it obvious? I want your head." Martin replied, pulling a machete out, "On a stake."
Benny nodded and slowly put his head on the counter despite Elizabeth's protests. Martin had won and was about to claim his prize. Asher's blood felt like it was beginning to boil and her vision was getting blurry. The pain from her wrists beginning to fade as the adrenaline kicked in.
"No… No no no! You stay away from him." Asher propped her foot up against the pipe hard. As Martin lunged at Benny, an overwhelming sense of strength came over her. Between Elizabeth's screams and the empty thud of a machete, the cuffs busted free with a hard shove but it was too late. In the blur of the scene that laid out before her she grabbed Elizabeth pulling her towards the door as blood spattered everywhere, Benny tearing out Martin's throat on the floor.
"D…Dean?" Elizabeth stammered into her cell phone. She was covered in blood and sat on the front steps of the Cajun diner. Asher was laid back beside her, an ice pack on her head and her wrist's freed from cuffs but raw and bloodied.
"Elizabeth?" came his surprised response.
"Y…You told me to call you if I saw… him"
"What do you mean? Roy? Is… Is he there right now? Where's Grace"
"Just come." Was her only response as she hung up.
When the Impala pulled in almost 30 minutes later, Dean nearly jumped from the car, slowing down to see Elizabeth and Asher were alive and ok. He approached Elizabeth pulling a small towel out that was tucked into his coat, placing it on Elizabeth's neck gently. He glanced over at Asher who appeared to be in mild pain but holding out. She gave him a small thumbs up without moving or looking at him, giving him the ok to move on. What he found inside the diner was a bloodied mess, Martin's body lay mutilated on the floor. He made his way back outside and flipped his phone open.
"I'd like to report a bear mauling." Dean paused as the operator went through the motions. "Yeah… the diner right outside of town." He clicked the phone shut and kneeled down next to Elizabeth. "You gonna be ok?" He asked, knowing it wasn't going to be so easy. But she nodded lightly to him and he patted her on the shoulder making his way around to Asher. She finally took the ice pack off of her head, looking up at him, knowing her freedom tour was over. Dean helped her up gently, taking the back of her arm and being careful not to touch her wrists. They heard the sirens off in the distance, police steadily making their way. Asher leaned down and gave Elizabeth a big hug.
"You take care of yourself ok?" she whispered to her. Elizabeth nodded, giving her a tight squeeze before releasing her. Dean quickly took Asher by the arm to support her and grabbed the pack that was on the steps, quickly pulling her to the Impala.
