Ministry Interlude

Deep within the halls of the Ministry, the Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge is sitting behind his desk. Smiling as he sees the current headline of the Daily Prophet announcing his senior undersecretary officially handling widespread changes to Hogwarts. Despite being minister he has loved being in the role for so many years. He has done well hiding the fear that crossed his face as the picture of Harry Potter is seen near the bottom talking about the Quidditch match that was done in honor of Cedric Diggory.

'The boy has been trouble ever since he re-entered the magical world.' he thought thinking back to when he met Harry Potter for the first time. If it weren't for the escape from Azkaban of one Sirius Black, he would have been one strike away from expulsion from Hogwarts and a snap of his wand.

Looking over another file on his desk he sees the report of the current hunt for Sirius Black. Given by one Kingsley Shacklebolt, one chosen by Amelia Bones. Stating he is currently somewhere near the Bulgarian border. Fudge smiled happy at the thought he does not have to deal with the headache of reporters continuously asking for updates.

'Life was good.' Just then a hard but swift knock was heard from the door.

Looking up Fudge quickly straightened everything on the table before stammering "Come In."

The door slowly swung to reveal the stature of Lucius Malfoy. Walking in with an aristocratic presence with his hand grasping a cane.

Fudge smiled looking over at Malfoy "Ah Lucius, come and take a seat. I was not expecting you for another hour or so."

Lucius took the seat across from Fudge "It has been nearly four months, Minister."

Fudge smile went away as soon as Lucius spoke "straight to business then Lucius. You must continue to be patient with me. It is not that simple as the Unspeakables will not easily bend to anyone no matter how much gold you throw their way."

"What is it that you need in the Department of Mysteries anyways Lucius? You have never come to me with this type of attitude before. You always seemed to be an okay fellow who don't have any interest except when concerning the politics of the wizarding world."

Lucius narrowed his eyes at Fudge that seemed to make the man deflate a bit and seem to have a fearful look in his face.

"My interest in the Department of Mysteries is none of your concern, Minister. Believe me when I say it is for your benefit not to pry into such thoughts. It is imperative that it be done before the Yule holiday. For if it does not happen you can expect funds that have been steadily been entering your vaults in Gringotts you use for your personal gains will diminish significantly." Malfoy said as he ran his hand along the shaft of his cane.

Fudge didn't like hearing that one bit knowing full well Malfoy's contribution is the biggest out of all of them. To lose such support will make him lose his luxurious life that he has been able to afford alongside his title of Minister.

"Very well, Lucius. I shall see it be done by Yule Holidays." Fudge said smiling.

"I apologize to being direct Minister. I am only a concerned citizen after all." Lucius said playing to Fudge's political side.

Lucius knew full well that the man seating in front of him is the most incompetent man for the job in recent memory. However, it is an advantage to Voldemort and his Death Eaters to have an incompetent wizard or witch to ease the downfall of the ministry once they decide to attack.

"Think nothing of it Lucius." Fudge said waving his hand "You are one of our most outstanding individuals in Wizarding Britain after all."

'Such a fool' Lucius thought as he smiled at the man.

"How goes the Senior Undersecretaries secret mission in discrediting the Headmaster and the Potter boy?" Lucius asked.

Smiling widely Fudge straightened up as he enjoyed talking about the subject "Very well, so well in fact that she has reported to me that the boy and the Headmaster seem to be avoiding one another since the beginning of term."

"It simply could be a ruse to make you unaware." Lucius said as he drew his wand out of his cane, carefully inspecting it.

Fudge's smile seem to be getting wider as Lucius quirked his brow.

"Madam Umbridge, has already thought of a way to make sure that is not the case. She plans to create a special role for students to immediately report to her. She calls it the Inquisitorial Squad. It is quite ingenious I must say" Fudge said. "I must add your boy would be a marvelous candidate for the role."

Lucius simply smiled back at him. Draco would definitely be someone perfect for the role. Also he could use his son for something else that Voldemort has been planning since that night in the graveyard. He has to simply make sure to keep his wife unaware of his plans. Thinking back to the argument they had when he offered Voldemort sanctuary in Malfoy Manor.

"Splendid Minister, it seems you have done a wonderful job in choosing Madam Umbridge for this role. May she continue to find success in her venture." Lucius said as he got up.

Smiling Fudge nodded his head as Lucius took his leave. Closing the door behind him Fudge seemed to have let out a sigh of relief as he slumped back on his chair. Looking over the Daily Prophet showing a picture of Harry Potter.

'Do the right thing boy, and nothing bad will happen.' The Minister thought to himself.

He was brought out of his thoughts as a ministry note flew onto his desk. Picking it up and unfolding the parchment his eye's widened in shock at what he was reading. He quickly brought out a piece of parchment and quill to begin writing.

Deep within the Ministry where the Department of Mysteries was located. Two unspeakable's one who looked seasoned and another somewhat younger person were looking at a two way mirror where in the other room sat Dedalus Diggle, Hestia Jones, Elphias Doge, Emmeline Vance, and Sturgis Podmore. One of the unspeakable's were looking at a couple of files with each of their faces in them. Looking at the other and simply just nodding his head they headed towards the door that led to the room.

"While there is no law against coming and going through our department. We couldn't help but wonder what is it you lot are doing. Suspiciously standing guard in a certain room as if guarding something." said the older of the two.

The group were not looking as if they were to answer the man's inquiry. They knew the consequences of what could happen if what they have been guarding fell into the wrong hands. In particular Voldemort. They themselves were suspicious of Death Eaters infiltrating the Department of Mysteries.

"We didn't doubt for one second any of you would begin talking." said the younger man "after all except from what my colleague here has said. You lot have no idea why we have detained you here."

"It's quite simple really." he continued "You see one of our own has mysteriously been cursed. Man is currently in St. Mungos at the moment." at the look on their faces he smiled "No, don't worry we are not suspecting any of you… yet."

"There is no reason to the rile them up" the older man interjected.

He just looked back at him sheepishly before turning back to the group.

"You see, it is rather curious how all of a sudden we have a group of people who constantly seem to be standing guard in one of the rooms. When mysterious things start to happen. So hence why you lot are here."

At that the two stared down the group. The group looked and glanced at each other wondering who is the one willing to speak for them. They had believed this to be a routine job hence the simple volunteer. After a moment it was Dedalus Diggle who nodded his head at the group before looking back at the two.

"Believe us when we say we had nothing to do with what had happened to your colleague. We honestly didn't know about that until now." Dedalus began "As for why it is we have been seemingly been around often that not. Looking as if we are guarding something here in the Department of Mysteries. It is because we are doing just that."

"Sorry to interject Mr. Diggle" the younger man said "But what here in the Department needs guarding? None of you are Auror's or other form of Law Enforcement. What made you lot decide to do such a thing."

"You know about the articles in the Daily Prophet? The one making Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter out as liars about you~know~who?" Hestia said "we can't say more but it is about that."

The two looked at each other before facing them once again.

"So Dumbledore's Order of the Phoenix. I should have known." the older man said "well, we aren't going to get anything more out of them kid."

The younger man simply smiled.

"I hope for your sake Dumbledore knows what he is doing this time around. Despite his penchant for teaching and mentoring the future. He is rather not that great when it comes to dealing with the Wizarding World problems."

Some of the faces the group had were utter disbelief. How in the world did this man get off by saying Dumbledore hasn't done anything great.

"I see by the look of your faces you don't believe me?" he asked "well then, I ask you lot this. Do any of you really know or understand what it is you are guarding?" he continued as none of them seem to refute his questioning "Can any of you really recount what occurred in the battle between himself and his former lover Gellart Grindelwald?" At the astonished looks "I see you didn't even know about that tidbit."

"Well, it seems he hasn't changed one bit. Here's to hope that it does not bite us all in the butt." he said before the two unspeakable's rose from their seat. "You lot may leave, your wands are just outside the door. I ask that you all be careful from here on out. We never truly suspected you in our colleague's current state. Just so you know… he was one of our best."

The group slowly walked out deep in thought at what the older unspeakable had said.

As the door closed the younger man looked over at the older man.

"I hope you got what you were looking for. It was rather risky for you to come in here and meet with me and hatch this whatever this is."

At that the older man seemed to have changed his appearance.

"Just glad the polyjuice effects wore off after they have left." He said as he looked back at the younger man with a grin.

"You think they will catch on as to what really happened? I'm sure they will approach Dumbledore about this."

"I'm sure Dumbledore will after a while. It does not take a genius to figure out not everyone who has been standing watch in the Hall of Prophecies were interviewed tonight."

"So what now?"

"I need you to stick with investigating the matter about last summer. There has to be some evidence as to who took the wand and who used it."

"We already have people looking into that. Of course you already knew about that."

"I do but let's be honest I need someone I can stay in contact with. Even though it might be nothing or it will take forever. It is important that I know about it."

"Alright… anything else?"

"No, but stay on your toes. I'm positive Bode won't be the last unspeakable to be cursed." As he turned to leave.

"Very well, I'll keep in touch… Padfoot."

It was a quiet night in Little Whinging, Surrey. The weather has started to bring in more a chilly air as the seasons have begun to change once again. Walking on the foot path in a nearby park not far from Privet Drive were two oddly dressed individuals. Seemingly looking as if searching for something one of them looked at the other.

"So, what makes you think Bones wants us to further investigate this issue?" he said as they continued to walk.

"How should I know how that woman thinks. I'd rather be anywhere near the Minister right now. The oaf is delusional and down right paranoid about Dumbledore and the Potter boy." the other man answered.

"Robards, you actually believe you~know~who has returned?"

"Savage don't be a dolt. Of course not, but anyone with a modicum of intelligence knows Dumbledore could care less about the Minister's job. I'm sure he feels Fudge should not be in office in particular as he seems to care about his own hide rather than the citizens. But, to say he wants the job himself? I highly doubt it."

As they reach a clearing overlooking the area they both stopped.

"So what makes you think we would find anything of note out here. It's been a few months since that attack and I'm sure any trace would have been gone either through time or weather." Savage said looking a bit bored about being in the situation.

"I hate to agree but I feel the same. However, we must consider this a free night. Not every day we get the chance to leave desk work or patrolling and end up in a peaceful serene place such as this." Robards said with a smile.

"Well should be just over there" Savage pointed to a nearby spot "Would you like to put the wards up or shall I?"

"Go on ahead, I don't feel the need but last thing we need is a muggle to randomly drop in on us investigating this area." Robards said as he look at the makeshift memorial that was put up for Dudley and his gang.

"Hey Robards." Savage whispered over his shoulder.

Not wanting to guess what it is he wanted Robards walked over to where Savage was and finding his line of sight saw what he was seeing.

"Never one to think Bones would send another Auror to make sure we doing what we suppose to be doing." Savage said as he was about to make his way over to the man but was halted when Robards firmly grasped his shoulder.

"That is definitely not Amelia's style. First, she had us report to her in her office. That only means need to know basis. Second, Dawlish is Fudge's personal Auror. His job is to stick by the Minister and not leave his side." Robards said finally letting go of Savage after it dawned on him something was fishy.

"This job just got a bit interesting if you ask me. What should we do now?" Savage asked.

Keeping a keen eye on Dawlish, Robards signaled that they will quietly from a distance follow him wherever he was going to.

It was a couple of minutes plus a few close calls from being discreet from Dawlish. As they saw the man they consider a colleague and a fellow brother in arms. What he seems to be searching fervently in the ground surrounding him. Robards glanced over to Savage as if to communicate in silent code to stay in watch not engage unless fired upon.

Robards then moved closer towards Dawlish still undiscovered. Just as he was close enough to clearly see the mans face. Dawlish face lit up as if he finally found what he was looking for. Just as he was about to reach down and pick it up. Robards sprang into action and launched three consecutive spells keeping him totally surprised and unawares where the attack came from.

"IMMOBULUS"

"STUPEFY"

"OBVIVIATE"

Very quickly Dawlish fell into a limp form. Robards quickly ran up to check up on him while Savage looked around to see if there were any witnesses before walking over to the two.

"Did you have to go over board with the stunner Robards?" Savage said as he gave a look of pity towards Dawlish sprawled out form.

"Can't be to sure Savage, must cover all your tracks unless you want to get outed when you thought you had."

"The way you spoke just now you make you similar to Mad Eye."

"Well, he's lived this long hasn't he." Robards said with a grin "Now, let's see what it is you were about to pick up eh Dawlish?"

Robards ran his hand and swept the grass on the ground feeling for what felt didn't belong. Savage on the other hand made sure there were no traces of this event by sweeping the area with his wand making sure there were no traces left behind by the two… wait three Auror's currently there.

"Ah" Robards said under his breath as he felt something and quickly picked it up.

Savage being done and hearing Robards walked over to him.

"So what is it that our fellow Auror wanted to come here and take hoping it not to be found." said Savage as he took whatever it was that Robards picked up.

"That, it seems whatever that is. It would bring light to just who it was that ordered the Dementor attack here this past summer." Robards said as he looked over at Dawlish sleeping form. "As to why Dawlish wanted this or better yet why he felt the need to come here and get it. That is something we should let our Head figure out."

"For once I agree with you there. This is getting very thick." Savage said. "So how do you want to do this?"

"I'll take Dawlish to his home. He should have been off the clock anyways. You take that piece to Madam Bones and tell her about what we saw with Dawlish."

With that Robards walked over to Dawlish, took out what looked like a book and no more than ten seconds later vanished from the spot. Savage looked over the piece of cloth. "Here's to hoping this all will be worth it at the end" he said silently before disapparating away.

In the parlor room in Bones Manor. Amelia Bones was tapping her finger on her desk as she was reading reports for that day. Usually she would leave the work at work but today she was a bit anxious as she ordered one of her veterans in Robards and another Savage to look into the Dementor attack in Little Whinging. She had to play it close to the chest as the Minister did not seem all that concerned the attack was done. Then again she has begun recently to think not so highly for the current Minister of Magic.

Things truly have gotten very serious with the recent unknown malady that has befallen the unspeakable that was in charge of investigating the event. She was hoping she did not have to expend any of her Auror's but this truly can be a breaking point to just what they need to expose not only who was behind the Dementor attack in Little Whinging but the revelation that Voldemort has returned.

As she smiled looking over to a wizarding picture of her niece Susan waving happily at her the floo came alive and Robards head appeared.

"Madam Bones!" he exclaimed as Amelia hurried over.

"What is it Robards? Are you in Savage in trouble?"

Looking at his superior he shook his head "No, Savage and I are just fine. However it seems that intuition of yours was on point. I got some news to share but I believe it is best that I head over or if you prefer-"

"Meet me at my office." Amelia cut him off quickly before turning her head to the nearby clock "In ten minutes."

Robards nodded his head to confirm he received the message before the floo connection cut off. Amelia then quickly grabbed a bit of floo powder and threw it in.

"Sirius Black"

"Hey Amelia." Sirius answered "What can I do for the lovely Head of the DMLE."

"Cut the crap Sirius." she said with a scowl on her face. "That did not work back before you were in that merlin forsaken prison. It sure as not going to work now."

Sirius pouted before looking a bit more serious.

"We may have a lead with the incident regarding the Dementor attack. We both know the Unspeakable's become a bit reserved after their lead investigator became ill. I'm heading to my office back in the ministry as two Auror's I have sent to investigate have returned with possibly valuable info."

"So what are you calling me for? You need to head to your office right away." Sirius quickly said.

"Well, before you kindly cut me off. I was going to kindly ask that you head over there as well. Of course find a way to disillusion yourself once you arrive as to not alert the two. Seeing as they are not aware about well you."

Sirius smiled. "Okay shall I wait for your call or go on ahead."

"Sirius don't be stupid I shall head over first to make sure everything is okay. Let alone only the Head can floo into the office without an occupant in the room."

Sirius just nodded his head before he disconnected the floo connection.

Amelia looked over at the clock again and noticed two of the ten minutes have passed. She quickly put on her Auror coat and snatched her wand from the table. Quickly threw another pinch of floo powder in before disappearing from the parlor.

Amelia arrived and looking around her office took her coat and placed it behind her chair before heading back to the floo connected in her office.

"Sirius Black"

"Ah how nice of you to check in on me so quickly Amelia." Sirius said with a smile.

Amelia just shook her head. "Get your head out of your butt Sirius and floo over now will you."

"Very well" Sirius said as he straightened up as he stood up. "Move on over last thing we need is to traumatize your fellow Auror corps upon seeing their beloved Head being under the most wanted man in all of Britain."

Amelia moved over as the floo flared with Sirius appearing. Quickly bowing before quickly disillusioning himself.

"You might want to make yourself comfortable Sirius as we have about another two minutes before the two Auror's I have sent will arrive." Amelia said as she walked around her desk where her seat was before she sat.

"I have to admit Bones, you sure have a fancy office here. Got to be nice being the Head of the DMLE and all."

"It's not so great when the Ministry have practically cut our budget and we rarely have any much of a force to take on you~know~who and his followers."

"You know you could say his name." Sirius said "It's not foolish to do so. Think about it we are grown adults here… well for the most part grown adults."

"It's just…"

"I know, trust me when I say I know. Just thought if your niece is brave enough to do so. Why can't you do the same."

"Susan is a lot braver than she brings on. She just so happens to be very loyal to her friends to a fault. Though I have to thank Harry for bringing out that side of her."

Amelia had to admit Harry has had a huge affect on her niece. Before Harry truly have entered their lives Susan was simply a carefree individual. Now she can't help but think Susan will be right there at Harry's side when he faces off against the darkest wizard in Britain's Wizarding history.

Just then a knock came from the door.

Robards walked in Amelia's office and sat down across from his boss. Savage himself stood behind where he sat.

"Alright gentlemen, when I gave this specific order I did not expect a report so quickly. Though I have to admit not entirely surprised." She said as she Robards handed her a file.

"So what can you tell me with what you found and don't leave anything out."

Robards quickly straightened up before speaking. He never was one to be intimidated by anybody but he always felt Amelia Bones was one of the few.

"As Savage and I arrived in Surrey we didn't think much of the order you have given us." he started

Amelia sighed internally knowing any Auror she sent regardless on who it was would take this assignment lightly. However Robards was one of her top men and one of the few along with Rufus Scrimgeour to have a no nonsense attitude.

"When we arrived at the known site where the attack took place. We moved to put up anti-muggle wards to avoid detection of muggles that would randomly drop in on us."

"Another individual arrived just as we were about to start our investigation. When we noticed the individual and recognize them Savage and I decided to discretely follow the individual to a few spots away from the site."

When Robards stated this Amelia's eyes went up from the file folder she was reading to him. Amelia's eyes however was noticeably looking at a spot behind Robards and Savage to an empty spot where she figured Sirius was sitting or standing.

"It was without a doubt the individual we were following was Auror John Dawlish."

"He is suppose to be in Minister Detail." Amelia said cutting Robards off.

"We understood that much Madam Bones. It was just too odd how an Auror would randomly arrive there where aside from Harry Potter no known magical reside. We also noted no Auror goes out alone usually always having a partner with them. So the appearance of Auror Dawlish did take us by surprise and acted silently."

"Very well, continue with your report."

"As we stayed back Auror Dawlish seemed to be searching for something in the surrounding area. As soon as he appeared to have found what he was searching for when he first arrived I acted quickly and stunned him."

Amelia didn't react to that knowing she would have done the same thing. She just couldn't fathom the idea that one of her Auror's has gone rogue.

"When we moved in closer we noticed a piece of cloth in his grasp. Savage here has brought it here." Savage grabbed a bag from from his jacket and put it on Amelia's desk.

"We have done a quick scan Madam Bones and have found that piece of cloth belongs to one Pius Thicknesse."

Amelia reacted accordingly she looked at Savage astonished with what was said.

"Pius Thicknesse? He has been missing for nearly a year."

"Believe me when I say I was stunned with the revelation as well Madam Bones." Savage said as he seemed to shake his head.

"In the meantime I transported Dawlish to his home and performed a mild Oblviation to take out any memory of the nights events."

"I understand your course of action Robards… well gentlemen you two have done an admirable job. You have taken the oath's so I know you won't say a word of this to anyone. You may be off for the next three days, you may go."

Robards stood up and saluted along with Savage.

"Thank you Madam Bones." The said in unison.

"Dismissed"

A few moments went by after the two had left her office when Amelia looked up.

"You don't have to stay quiet the whole time Sirius."

Just then Sirius appeared looking a bit more serious than just before the Auror's arrived to deliver the news regarding a bigger mystery and possibly a bigger situation than they initially thought.

"Things sure just got a bit more interesting that's for sure. Makes me wonder if Voldemort has been planning and scheming for more than just this past couple of months." Sirius said

"If that is the case. Dumbledore is way behind the ball here. He thinks Voldemort has just recently began to do his scheming and planning just recently. If he has agents already scouring the Ministry and under everyone's noses to boot. We could be in a whole lot more trouble than we once thought."

"There is no denying that." Amelia said "I fear to think that Dawlish one of our top Auror's has fall in line with the Death Eaters. We don't have the manpower as it is. Merlin, whey do we have to have such an incompetent minister."

"Sadly all the competent ones passed on from the last war. Unless… you want to be the minister yourself Amelia." Sirius said coyly

"Hmph, maybe in another life in another dimension maybe." She shot back "The news that this cloth belongs to Thicknesse is also a cause of concern. He went missing around the supposed time Moody was attacked by Barty Crouch Jr."

Amelia then had a long far off look.

"What is it Amelia?" Sirius asked a bit concerned.

"It's just that Pius while a ministry member did have ties with certain individuals. The most prominent being Dolores Umbridge."

"Wait you think that woman had something to do with the attack?" Sirius asked astonished.

"It is hard to say, however it is not that far fetched. Just the thought that woman is in the school with children is behind this is unimaginable."

Sirius though seemed to be seething.

"Rest assured Sirius, I will personally look further into this." She said. "While we seem to know who was there. We have yet to uncover who it was that made the order. If it was her… it will be the happiest day of my life." She said with a smile.

We have arrived to the middle of our story. I will quickly state yes, that was Sirius who was with the Unspeakable. Yes I resolved the matter quickly by having the Auror's also look into the event from last summer, though somewhat resolved the Unspeakable's will make another appearance down the line in this story.

The note Fudge received is nothing important so don't read anything into that.

It won't take a lot of thought but yes that was Pius Thicknesse who arrived in Umbridge's office in the summer. Will Umbridge be found out as the one who ordered it? Stay tuned to find out.

We will be heading back to Hogwarts next chapter. Like I stated previously that letter Harry found will be making it's appearance as well as my take on Dumbledore's Army.
