CHAPTER TWELVE

She was fierce, she was strong, she wasn't simple.

She was crazy and sometimes she barely slept.

She always had something to say.

She had flaws and that was ok.

And when she was down, she got right back up.

She was a beast in her own way, but one idea described her best.

She was unstoppable and she took anything she wanted with a smile.

Blair couldn't believe it, there was an army of hundreds here. This whole time she thought it had just been the small group of twenty dwindling to just her and Dean and she had been wrong. Yes the majority of people here in the rebel camp would be considered genetically 'impure' but there was still plenty of genetically 'pure' –or Divergents – fighting against the Government.

"Where did all these people come from?" Blair asked bewildered her eyes still roaming over the crowd of rebels. "Who organised all this?"

"Your father and the little group you were with aren't the only ones to disagree with the governments decisions Blair," Rick answered, "we just took a more patient approach. You build your numbers too quickly and become aggressive in your approach to fast you will attract a lot of attention and retaliation, do it slow and methodical you will go practically unnoticed."

"So what's the plan?" Eric spoke up this time.

"Well the plan was to get some people working on the inside, but that will take too long if they are indeed planning to do something about Jeannine," Rick frowned.

"So a more aggressive approach then?" Blair suggested.

"No, I think we still need to fly under the radar a bit," Rick shook his head. "You and your father are so alike. He preferred the more direct approach as well."

"It gets the job done," she shrugged.

"Stay here, I'll go talk to a few people and tell them what's going on," Rick said before walking off.

Blair stared after him for a moment, "I don't like this, I don't think they'll be keen on acting quickly enough if they've been spending the last year 'staying under the radar'"

"Just wait and see what they have to say," Eric muttered. "If not we can stock up on weapons here and then do our own thing."

"You're still with me on this?" Blair asking genuinely shocked. She thought maybe Eric would want to go back to his home, or stay with this group where he had a greater chance of surviving this fight.

"Of course I am," he smiled at her. "Then we're going to Texas remember."

She just grinned at him and stood up on her tip toes and kissed him. Maybe she would get the happy ending she thought only existed in dreams.

"Ease up on the PDA's," a man called out distinguishing himself from the sea of strange faces.

"Sarge, didn't think you'd ever turn your back on the Government," Blair responded recognising the man. He was the guy who trained Dean and herself, platoon sergeant and pretty decorated after many wars and combat missions.

"Neither did I," he answered dead pan, "but I guess having your wife and kids publicly executed changes your mind pretty quickly."

"Yeah, that will do it to you," Blair nodded not pressing any further knowing she'd get no answers.

"So you're running with the experimentees now?"

"Well it's not like I had a lot of options, they went on a killing spree. Killed some good soldiers, men, women, children they don't discriminate."

"Good to have you back on board then," Sarge smiled wistfully, "it's good to have the numbers that we do, but most of them lack training. Only 10 or so have knowledge of weapons, and the only experience in hand to hand combat around here is based off bar and street fighting. It's sloppy to say the least. Now Rick is saying we've only got a few days to act, I'm a good instructor but I ain't no miracle worker. If we want to succeed we'll need a small team of skilled professionals."

"You're looking at your team," Eric spoke firmly trying to assert some dominance.

"Yeah, I thought you two would be planning on that," he shook his head a ghost of a chuckle danced across is lips momentarily. "I don't object completely but Blair you probably aren't the best choice to go unnoticed. They all know your face and are on high alert for you."

"I made a career out of blending in and going unnoticed, they can know my face as much as they want but I'll still get the job done. You trained me to do so yourself," Blair nodded confidently.

"The surveillance team will be back at 2200, come listen in on the debrief and we can make a strategy from there," Sarge responded before turning to walk away. "Oh and Blair it's time to fill your brother's shoes, don't pull any of that rebellious crap and stick to the plan ok."

Blair narrowed her eyes at the retreating back of her former trainer.

"Bit of a rebel hey?" Eric smirked.

"Hardly, I deviated from formation one time and it was in self-defence I didn't do it to be a little shit."

Eric just raised just smiled mockingly at her, it was interesting seeing life beyond the fence especially how Blair fit into her old life. Everyone knew about her out here whereas she was a complete mystery inside the city. But it made him realise how little he knew about her but how much he wanted to know everything. A completely new feeling for him, he was so used to being wrapped up in himself and gaining power and prestige, but now he didn't care about that, he just wanted the promise of a full free life.

Blair and Eric strolled through the now deserted campsite, everyone was in bed and the men on watch were in position on the perimeter. They had just finished up sitting in on the surveillance teams debrief – Rick and Sarge had wanted to discuss a few things so planning had been postponed until morning. Blair wasn't particularly happy with this decision thinking they needed to prioritise better. She shrugged her jacket off in the warm night air, the weather had been getting warmer each day.

"I can't wait for all this to be over," Eric murmured. "Can finally attempt a normal life away from fighting and military life style."

"This is normal," Blair muttered bitterly. "Since the beginning of time it has always been people killing people, it's human nature to fight."

"Just because the masses follow that doesn't mean we have to," Eric said firmly.

This is a really short chapter, I'll have the next one up really soon. I went away over Easter and wasn't able to update so I just wanted to get something up. Hope you like it and aren't too annoyed by its length!
