Chapter 4
(Jack's POV)
"what's going on at Tooth's place?" crystal asked.
Bunny looked like what he was saying was obvious. "I told you. Trouble."
I rolled my eyes. You dumb kangaroo, I thought to myself.
Binx had the same idea. "She meant what kind of trouble."
Bunny looked at Crystal, Binx, and I snobbishly. "None of your business. Children."
Excuse me, but weren't they asking for our help? So it kind of is our business.
Crystal looked as though she lost her patience with Bunny. Not that I blame her. All he's done since the three of us got here was be rude to us.
Crystal placed Binx into my arms. I felt North pull Sandy and myself back from Bunny and Crystal.
Yup, Crystal's lost her patience with Bunny.
She got into Bunny's face and glared at him. "listen you big puffball. We didn't come here to be insulted by an overgrown rabbit." bunny narrowed his eyes at her insult. "Now all of you said that you need our help, but we won't lift a finger if Mr. I'm-Better-Than-You here doesn't stop insulting Jack, my brother, and I. And we won't help till we know what is going on!" Bunny was about to say something to Crystal, but she cut him off before anything could come out of his mouth. "Don't even think about saying anything, or so help me, you will be in the ocean, sleeping with the fishes!"
Bunny whimpered and hid behind a yeti.
Haha! The more time I spend with this girl, the more attractive she becomes.
North chuckled as he walked over to Crystal. "Sorry, Bunny. But you were asking for it." he placed a hand on her shoulder. "Crystal is correct, though." he looked down at her. "You won't be able to help if you don't know what's going on."
Crystal nodded in response. "some information would be nice."
But Norrh gave us some news that he was surprisingly happy about. "Well, we don't exactly know either."
I mentally slapped my forehead. He's kidding right?
North continued, this time a little bit more serious. "But all we know is that Pitch is out there doing who knows what!"
I snickered at that. Is he serious? "You mean, 'The Boogeyman'?"
I felt a gaze at me harden, and I noticed that it was Crystal. "Don't underestimate someone by just their name. Even someone with the most ridiculous name can be dangerous."
I noticed that she was serious as she said this. Her blue eyes looked as though they contained a pain that was centuries old, which it probably was. I remembered what North told me. The hags that he was talking about may have sounded harmless, but they must have been very dangerous.
I really got to talk to her later about this. Maybe later I can help her and her brother take care of this.
Got nothing better to do.
Crystal looked to North to discuss a deal. "Now North, Thackery and I will help out, but that doesn't mean I agree to be a Guardian. I'll help take down Pitch, but once he's taken care of, my brother and I go back home. Does that seem like a fair deal?" she brought out her hand to seal the deal.
Bunny was about to say no to the deal but he was cut off by North as he agreed and shook her hand.
Bunny, of course, protested to North's actions, but North had enough of it.
North hardened his gaze as he talked to Bunny. "We need their help whether you like it or not. And Crystal's terms are fair. No more complaints!"
Bunny just crossed his arms and pouted.
Seriously? How old was he again?
"Now let's get going! Come on everyone!" North said as he got his things and went downstairs.
But I was busy staring at Crystal. I seem to be doing that a lot lately. Why has this been happening?
Crystal held out her arms. "Can I have my brother back?"
Stop, staring! You're acting weird again! I mentally told myself as I snapped out of it. (Author's Thoughts: Sorry, I had to put in a Warm Bodies line in! Couldn't resist!)
Remembering that I still had Binx, I gave him back to her. "Oh yeah. Here." I muttered.
I looked concerned at Crystal, still worried on the hurtful things Bunny said, and what North told me.
Still can't believe that she was going to be married.
Why does that make me feel so . . . depressed?
"So you okay?" I asked.
Crystal nodded in response. "Yeah, sorry about that. I just have a bit of a temper. And, well, Bunny was getting on my nerves."
Is she kidding? That was awesome!
I laughed as I replied. "No, actually that was great! 'Bout time someone told off the Kangaroo."
The three of us began to laugh. It felt good! They know how to laugh! But the three of us laughing sounds . . . familiar. Again.
It feels like I know their laugh.
But where?
"What are you doing?" We heard North call. The three of us looked down to see him waiting. "Come on!" He motioned.
Crystal quickly flew down to where North was. I stayed where I was.
Thinking I wasn't needed, I was going to go to where Crystal lived, to hold down the fort, until I heard North. "You too, Jack! Come on!"
Wait, what?
"What?" I yelled to North but he was already leaving.
Excuse me, but I never agreed to this!
I flew down to try to talk North out of it.
Crystal and Binx may want to help, but I don't! I don't mean to sound selfish and all, but I'm not a hardwork guy! I like to have fun! Didn't North and the others hear me before?
North pushed the large doors open as we walked or flew.
"North! North! I told you, I'm not coming with you guys!" I tried reasoning, but it's like North was hearing every other word.
I stood next to Crystal as we came to a platform.
Wait, were we going to . . . oh, no! I don't think so!
"There is no way I'm climbing into some rickety old . . ."
Two yetis opened two large doors and I watched in awe.
"Sleigh?" I finished.
No way . . .
A large polished sleigh with about eight or seven reindeers moving around hard came in. But it was very modernized.
Crystal looked at me with a smirk. "Rickety old sleigh, huh?" She said, quoting my complaint.
Okay . . . I'll give her that.
As I looked at the sleigh, I tried to resist going in, but . . . Oh what the heck!
"Okay, one ride but that's it." Before hopping in, I remembered who was beside me.
Oh, now where are my manners?
I bowed to Crystal. "My apologies. Ladies first."
Crystal blushed as she giggled softly. She gave a polite curtsy. "What a gentleman. Thanks."
Giving her my hand, I gave her a small boost onto the sligh. Once on, she and her brother sat in the middle row, while I stood up. Glancing behind, I noticed Sandy sitting behind us.
"Everyone loves the sleigh." I heard North say as he got on.
Haha, he's right about that.
We were missing one other person on the sleigh.
"Bunny, what are you waiting for?" North asked.
Bunny tapped his kangaroo feet against the sleigh. As it wobbled, he chickened out.
"I think my tunnels might be faster, mate, and safer." He said, trying to tip toe away.
But North wasn't going to take 'no' as an answer. "Get in!" North grabbed Bunny from his scruff and tossed him to the seat in front of Crystal, Binx, and I.
"Buckle up!"
Bunny looked around, but after not finding anything, he panicked. "Where are the bloody seat belts?" He squeaked.
"That was just expression." North chuckled. "Are we ready?" He asked a yeti who was preparing the sleigh.
The yeti exclaimed, frantically shaking his head, no, but I guess North didn't notice.
Seeing that North didn't notice, the yetis and elves worked fast to get ready for take off.
With a whip of the reins from North, the reindeers took off. We all leaned back from the force and speed of the reindeers.
Bunny gripped the side of the sleigh with his fingernails, making scratch marks.
Crystal, Binx, and I had to smirk at that.
Aww is the big, tough bunny scared of a little sleigh?
Speeding through the frozen tunnels, it felt like a roller coaster! And it looks like Sandy thought the same thing. His arms were in the air and he smiled big.
That's the spirit, Sandy!
This is what I call fun! I love flying on my own, but this is also a good second!
The rush, the wind in your hair, feeling completely free! Ah, what a feeling!
Looks like Crystal is thinking the same thing, since she placed her brother with North and stood with me.
I grinned at her. Her eyes seemed to light up as she felt excitement.
Her eyes looked really pretty as they sparkled.
I felt a bump and Crystal fell into me. Instinctively, I wrapped my arm around her waist, keeping her from falling down.
Crystal giggled nervously as she blushed. "Sorry. I'm a bit of a klutz."
I laughed, shaking my head. There's nothing for her to apologize for. "That's okay, but I suggest you sit down for the rest of the ride." I placed my arm around her to steady her as she sat down. And just in time too, since North decided to add in some loops.
Not that I'm complaining! This makes the ride even better!
"I hope you like the loop-de-loops!" North yelled. Mostly to Bunny.
Bunny's cheeks puffed up for a moment but he made a swallowing sound. "I hope you like carrots."
I couldn't help but chuckle at that. He had it coming.
We were coming to the end of the tunnel and a light was showing, symbolizing that we were heading to the exit. Racing on the runway of the tracks, they we're leading upward and I leaned over the side of the sleigh in excitement.
I was ready for the sleigh to become airborne! And soon enough, we were in the air!
What a rush! We were flying so high and fast! North's home looked so small from this height!
I glanced at Bunny and he looked ready to pass out. I chuckled under my breath. Time for some entertainment.
"Hey Bunny!" I called as I went to the back of the sleigh. Bunny and Crystal turned to look at me. "Check out this view." As soon as I said this, I pretended to fall. I laid on top of one of the ski things beneath the sleigh, waiting for their reactions.
"Jack!" I heard Crystal's voice cry. Okay, I didn't want to scare her, I'll apologize to her once I'm up there.
"North! He's . . ." I heard Bunny exclaimed, panicked. I smirked, now his reaction is what I was looking forward to.
Crystal and Bunny looked over the side of the sleigh to find that instead of falling, I was safe and sound.
I smirked at their worried expressions. "Aw, you do care."
Crystal's blue eyes showed utter relief while Bunny's green eyes showed anger. "Rack off, you bloody show pony!"
Sorry, couldn't help myself.
I flew back up to the sleigh, taking my place beside Crystal. Crystal still had a panicked look in her eyes as I came to her side, but she also had a pretty smile. "Jack, please don't scare me like that again."
Hmm, that sounds familiar. I feel like someone has said that before. I wonder . . . but Crystal's reaction was funny. She needs to lighten up, I'll never die. That's why we're called immortal.
But I decided to quell her fears. "Okay, I won't. Stop worrying."
Although, something tells me she won't stop worrying.
"Hold on, everyone! I know a shortcut." North called back to us.
If Bunny didn't have fur, he would probably turn green. "Strewth, I knew I should've taken the tunnels." He squeaked out.
North took out a sparkling globe and whispered something to it. He threw it in front of us, and it created a misty vision of a pink and gold palace. We flew through the window in the sky and we saw a strange sight.
Dark figures with black streams were coming at us fast. They were all over the place, going in different directions. They seemed like they were trying to catch something. I squinted my eyes to see what they were catching, and they looked like humming birds. Similar to Tooth and her . . . Oh no!
"They're taking the tooth fairies!" I jumped up and as one of the creature were about to capture another one of the fairies, I grabbed one of them, just as the fairy was about to be taken.
Landing next to Crystal, I opened my fist to see if the small fairy was harmed.
"Is she okay?" Crystal asked.
I glanced at her for a moment. "I think so. You okay, Baby Tooth?"
Baby Tooth smiled and nodded, letting us know she was fine. Thank goodness.
As we came closer to the palace, there were more of these shadows racing toward us at a fast pace. North handed me the reigns of the sleigh and gave Binx to Crystal as he brought out his two swords to fight.
I smiled at this when I recieved the reigns. This is going to be fun!
But Crystal looked a little nervous. "Uh, Jack? Are you sure you know how to drive?"
I have to say, she looks kinda cute with how nervous she was. I laughed, "Don't worry, we'll be fine!"
I kept my eyes in front of me as I led the reindeers in the best direction. I heard Crystal chuckle nervously, "Why does that not make me feel better?"
She really shouldn't worry; there was no way I'd let Crystal get hurt.
North destroyed one of the oncoming shadows with his swords and as it came apart, it looked like black sand. And apparently something came out.
"They're stealing the teeth!" I heard the Kangaroo exclaim.
What? Why are these shadows creatures stealing the teeth?
All of a sudden, I felt someone wrap their arms around my waist tightly. But then I heard a cat meow harshly.
"Hey, watch it!" Binx's voice yell.
"Sorry!" Crystal apologized, right behind me. I smirked to myself, now knowing it was her holding onto me.
"Here Binx, get in my hoody pocket. It's big enough!" I said, still smirking. But the siblings don't know that.
Binx quickly got into my lap and climbed in my pocket, but he quickly complained. "Jack, no offense, but you're freezing!"
I laughed, "Thank you!" I took that as a compliment! Binx should have known I would be cold! My last name is Frost and I'm the spirit of winter! Haha! It's pretty obvious!
Soon, I felt Crystal's arms tighten around my waist as I directed the reindeers to go faster. I started to get worried about her; is she alright?
"Are you alright, Crystal?" I called to her. I felt her shake her head no. I glanced at her over my shoulder and her head was buried in my back, her light blue hair flying wildly as we flew in the air. "Just hold on tight!"
"Okay!" She squeaked.
Dont worry, Crystal. I got you, you're gonna be fine.
We were right next to the palace towers and there were even more shadow creatures. The danger of them got my adrenaline pumping and my excitement came alive! I thought of the sledding that I did with Jamie today, and I felt like doing something similar again!
Next thing I know, I started going in different directions with the sleigh, almost crashing into the towers and creatures. I laughed in excitement! This is fun!
But apparently a certain someone didn't think so.
"Jack! What are you doing?!" Crystal shrieked.
I smiled, "I'm driving!"
"Then don't do that! We might crash!"
How many times do I have to tell her? "Don't worry!" I laughed.
She really needs to have fun!
We came to the pillars of the palace and Crystal began to panic and yell directions, but I wasn't really listening to her. My eyes were closed in joy as I laughed.
To be honest, this whole thing. With the sleigh ride and Crystal holding onto me, and Crystal yelling directions, it's a strange feeling of deja vu again. Have I driven a sleigh before? I'm sure I would have remembered any sleigh rides.
Suddenly, I was able to hear Crystal's voice again and it seemed even more frantic.
"No! Jack! Right! Right! Look out!"
Crystal's grip tightened around my waist again and I felt her hide her head in my back. I looked up and saw us flying straight towards a large pillar, just waiting for us to crash into it! I gasped as I snapped the whips and turned the sleigh to the right. We landed on one of the balconies of the towers and slid sideways.
Because of the sharp turn we took, Crystal and I tumbled out of the sleigh; and we separated as we landed on the ground. I landed on my back and Crystal landed on her front. Luckily, it wasn't too hard. I quickly sat up against the wall of a pillar and looked at Crystal, hoping she wasn't too mad.
"See? That wasn't so bad, was it?" I chuckled nervously.
Luckily, Crystal didn't look too mad. In fact, she looked relieved as she sighed.
But someone else had a different opinion. Binx tumbled out of my pocket, looking very ill and unsteady on his paws. He glared at me with his green feline eyes, "Remind me to never get on a sleigh with Jack driving again."
I glared right back at him. I wasn't that bad of a driver, was I?
But before I could say anything, a flutter of wings had our attention and we saw Tooth in distress. Sandy, North, and Bunny went up to a higher balcony as she said that all of her fairies and teeth were stolen by those creatures.
She landed on her knees, tears gathering in her eyes. "Everything is gone. Everything."
Poor Tooth. . .
And I wasn't the only one who thought so. Binx, especially. His eyes were only on Tooth. He's got it bad for the Tooth Fairy.
"Jack," I heard Crystal whisper to me, "Give Baby Tooth to me."
I quickly realized her plan and gently placed the last fairy in her hand.
Crystal placed Baby Tooth on Binx's back. "Let me give you a boost."
My eyes widened as she swirled her right hand in a circle and a water disk appeared beneath her brother and it lifted him into the air. That's amazing! I had no idea she could do that. Then again, this is the first time I've seen her use her powers. Who knows what else she could do?
Crystal made the disk fly to where Tooth and the other Guardians were and Binx revealed Baby Tooth was still here. It definitely raised Tooth's spirits! She was so thankful, she gave Binx a big kiss on the cheek. Haha! Binx looked ready to die from happiness. It brought amusement to both Crystal and I.
He's really got it bad for Tooth.
But unfortunately, the lightheartedness did not last long.
A chilling voice entered the air, "I have to say, this is very, very exciting." Who is speaking? It's not Russian, Australian, or American. The accent is British. "The Big Four, all in one place. I'm a little starstruck."
On another balcony above all of us, a man stepped out, and I felt chills run down my spine.
His skin was dark grey and he long cloaks of pure black. His black hair was like a raven's feather; in color and style. His eyes were a yellow topaz, but one look at them made fear arise inside of me.
Eyes were the window to the soul.
He must be Pitch Black.
He revealed that he was behind the mysterious actions that have happened lately and that the creatures that stole the tooth fairies were his creations. They were made of black sand, a trick similar to Sandy's dream sand, except Pitch's version creates Nightmares.
"Why are you doing this?" North asked, the only civil one.
"Maybe, I want what you have. To be believed in."
My eyes widened, and Crystal's reaction was similar. Looks like we weren't the only ones with problems of being believed in . . .
"Maybe I'm tired of hiding in the shadows. And under beds."
Bunny decided to put in his two cents. "Well maybe that's where you belong!"
That idiot . . .
"Bunny, you're not helping," Crystal muttered.
Hmph, my thoughts exactly.
"Oh go suck an egg," Pitch said as he disappeared again and I quickly held my staff in defense, keeping an eye out for Pitch. I heard a rush of water beside me, and I knew Crystal was prepared.
"Wait a minute," We heard Pitch behind us, and once the two of us turned around, he was in an opening in the building with numerous openings. He looked at me with surprise. "Is that Jack Frost?"
His eyes suddenly widened as he saw Crystal, and as he looked at her, I felt a burning desire to protect Crystal. How dare he look at her!
"And Crystal Waters? What are you doing here? I thought you were staying at the Sandersons."
Sandersons? Who are they? The name sounds awfully familiar. In a bad way.
The name brings a very bitter feeling inside me.
I glanced at Crystal, and she was giving Pitch a glare. "I decided to take a break and help the Guardians."
Pitch seemed unfazed by her glare, "I see. Well don't worry about the house. Even I wouldn't go there."
The house? The house Binx and Crystal are guarding? Even Pitch knows? Why do I not know this?! And apparently, he's not a fan of that house either. Even he has something to fear; and he's the Boogeyman!
Pitch looked at me again, "I didn't think you were so chummy with the Guardians."
"We're not," I muttered. I was brought against my will. But the sleigh ride was voluntary.
"Oh so, a neutral party. Then I'll just ignore you. Though I'm sure the two of you are used to that," he said with a smirk, knowing he struck a nerve.
And struck a nerve he did.
Pitch then went onto a monologue of how during the Dark Ages, he was all powerful and people feared him. But once the MIM created the Guardians, the fear was gone, and no one believed in Pitch anymore.
That was why he created the Nightmares; to get revenge. And stealing the tooth fairies and causing the Tooth Palace to deteriorate was only the first step. Once children stop believing in the Guardians, then the Guardians themselves will disappear.
And I thought I had it bad with not being seen; the Guardians' survival lies with the belief of the children.
"No," I heard Binx and Crystal whisper in horror. I had to agree with them. This plan was horrible.
"All that will be left, will be fear and darkness," Pitch said with a malicious smile.
Bunny decided to take action and he threw his boomerang at Pitch, "Not while we're around!"
Pitch gasped in fear and he escaped with his Nightmare.
We quickly followed him, throwing as any attacks we could at him. We landed at the bottom of the Tooth palace and we came to a glade. We searched in every direction for Pitch, but there was no trace of him.
"He's gone," North said.
