I haven't ever really mentioned it before but I do like to name my stories after songs! If you are interested this story was named after the song I Get The Blues When It Rains by The Ink Spots. I like to think at some point the song has something to do with the story in question!
To my reviewers: THANK YOU! You guys are awesome. I am so glad you are still with me and wanting more. I am here to bring you that! Here is another chapter.
Chapter 12:
She wasn't sure how long they had been sitting in the small office of the constable. All Cody could tell was that it was raining and that the office was fairly empty of others as the day crawled on. She could hear Gretta's voice in the back of her mind but she was in some sort of a daze.
"Seriously Cody what is going on?" Gretta said again, this time hitting her sister's shoulder.
Cody's head snapped to look at her sister, her eyes unwavering as she spoke, "This is where I am from." In so many ways it was the truth. She had been born here. At least that is what she had been told. But this was also her time... It seemed to be anyways. "We time traveled."
Gretta glared at Cody unblinking as the events of their day rushed through her head. How was any of this possible? She had seen things that no one could believe... And this? Just another one of those things. "Time travel..." She repeated the words, shifting in her seat. The fabric below her was bendy but also very shiny and uncomfortable. Whatever it was she had never seen such a thing before. "What is this?" She asked her sister, moving her butt around in annoyance.
Cody's eyes trailed down to the chair and back to her sister, "It's plastic." She said, wondering why the first thing her younger sister would ask would be about the chair she was sitting in. Shouldn't she have a million other things on her mind right now.
"Well... I think I dislike it." Gretta muttered, silenced quickly by the woman re-entering the room. But she wasn't the only one that came in as Gretta soon noticed a tall, very dark haired man follow her.
His eyes trailed the two girls, many questions hidden behind their depths as he sat down on the edge of the officer's desk. "This is my... "
"Damon. Damon Salvatore." He grinned widely and Cody could see the false welcome hidden within. His hand reached out to Cody first, and she took it in her own.
"Cody..." She stopped a moment and thought about it. Should she give them her adopted name? Would that tip them off? Would they know what she had done? That she had run away? "Flemming." She said shortly, deciding to give her birth name in the hopes that they would not find anything on her. At least nothing bad. Maybe she would get lucky somehow and find a family member. But she was counting on it. "And my sister Gretta."
The man stopped a moment and eyed Cody, his expression changing from bored to interested in an instant.
"Flemming." Damon repeated, watching the girl in the old tunic in front of him. She was very beautiful, much like Elena. And in a way he could see it. There was certainly something there that resembled Isobel Flemming. But at the same time she was different. Why did she smell so good? He had entered the room in the hopes of earning a favor from Caroline's mom but instead it seemed he was drawn into something much larger then that.
"That's what I said." Cody raised a brow at him. Did he know who she was?
"You aren't from here." Damon went on. "How did you end up here?"
"She said we time traveled." Gretta interrupted. She stopped a moment, looking at her sister. "How did we time travel?" She looked confused, but now that she had a little time to think it over... She wanted to know what the hell was going on.
Cody sighed, her head falling into her hands a moment. She raised her face again, looking at Damon. "I don't know how we did it. I just know that we did." Then she turned to her sister. "When Mags found me in the woods... That day in the rain. It happened then to. I just fell asleep and woke up there."
"But you said you..." Gretta lost track of her words.
"Would Bonnie know anything about this?" The Forbe's woman asked Damon, curious as to the real reason the two were here and what connection this girl had with Elena. "At least she might be able to tell us where we can start..."
"I was thinking that as well." Damon agreed. "We'll need somewhere to keep them." He looked back at his friend, "They can come with me to the boarding house I suppose. My brother would just love that." He grinned that stupid grin again and Cody felt herself tense. She knew that smile all to well. He was going to be a challenge much like Niklaus.
Niklaus.
The name hit her like a ton of bricks. She wasn't going to see him again. Never again. He was gone and she was here. She was stuck with Gretta in a time she had been so unhappy in. Their brother was dead and for all she knew the rest of her family as well. All that she would remember was her brother bleeding out in her sister's arms. And the attack after the fact.
"Are you alright?" The officer asked Cody, noticing that she had once again left the room in a way...
"Forgive my sister." Gretta finally said, speaking up. "We lost our brother today to... Something in the woods. We ended up here so quickly after that I think it's finally just now settling in. Mr. Salvatore we will except your offer of a roof over our heads. For a few nights anyways."
It hadn't been long... The rise and fall of the hills that lead them to the Salvatore home seemed unending. Cody wished her sister hadn't said they would stay with Damon and his brother. But what other choice did they have? They were stuck in a place she hadn't seen in years. Getting used to it was going to take some time.
"This is your house?" Gretta asked Damon, in awe of the thing. Yes buildings of this time seemed to tower in comparison to those back home. But this one sat atop the greenest grass.
"Home sweet home." Damon grinned at the girl. There was a difference between the two. This he knew was obvious. He wasn't so much interested in the young thing. It was Cody that drew him in.
The introduction to Isobel hadn't gone well. Elena and Alaric were met with a dangerous, cold woman. Not like Elena in any way. This Cody girl arrived so soon after Elena's mother and Damon couldn't help wonder if the two could be connected.
Was she Elena's relative? And if so what would that mean for her? Did it even really matter? So many questions ran through his mind as he watched the two explore the outside of his home.
"What year is it?" Cody asked, realizing she hadn't asked yet. She had just assumed...
"Two thousand and nine." Damon told her, watching for a reaction. She didn't seem to excited by the things around town. If he had to guess he would say she wasn't from to far in the past.
"Mm." She sighed to herself, a little relief washing over her. Enough time had passed... Maybe the foster home had forgotten her. Maybe she could teach Gretta about this time and they could live in peace.
"What do you mean they just poofed into town square? Caroline's mom told you this?" Stefan's head began to spin. He had only just began to help Elena get over the meeting with her biological mother. Now this? And one of them claimed to be a Flemming?
After so long it seemed that Mystic Falls was coming back to life. Strange happenings were becoming the norm.
"Just what I said brother. Poof." Damon couldn't help the stupid hand gesture and smug little grin. He loved watching his younger brother squirm. He also loved the idea that this could damage his sweet little relationship with Elena. Even if it tugged at him a little. He would shrug it off. Soon enough he would get Katherine back and get the hell out of Dodge. The longer he stuck around the more he wanted to stay. "She looks alot like her, doesn't she?" He asked, raising one eye and watching Stefan.
"The other one doesn't." He said, at least it was only the one they would have to deal with. "Did Elizabeth look into her name?"
"She is doing so as we speak. Hopefully she finds something. If not it wouldn't hurt to ask Alaric." The man was obsessed with his Ex. He must have done his research on those around her. Hell, he knew about Elena... "Someone will know something... Maybe even Isobel." Of course that was a last resort.
"My mother." Cody had been resting her head on the door frame, watching the two intently. She was a little shocked that they hadn't heard her.
"Your mother what?" Damon spun around to look at the small trespasser.
She pulled herself casually off the frame and moseyed towards the two brothers. "Isobel. My mother." The two stood still a moment before making weird faces at each other. "I came to Mystic Falls when I was younger to look for information on my family. All I knew when I showed up in this town is that I was given up by a woman named Isobel Flemming after I was born." They clearly knew who she was...
"You aren't from the past." Damon was still in shock. He had figured she was older. But how could he not see it before? This wasn't going to be easy, nothing was ever easy.
"I am from the past. Two different pasts." She raised a brow. "But I ended up in Gretta's Mystic Falls around 1999, I was eight."
"Eight."
"Can you tell me what I seem to be missing here? What do you know that I don't?" Cody demanded, getting annoyed at the tall dark haired man. He was quite beautiful, true. But she wasn't the same as Gretta. Men were not something she had her mind on. None but Niklaus.
Stefan sighed, "We need to sit down and talk about this. Damon can go figure out the details." He eyed his brother in the hopes of speaking to Cody alone. His brother only made things harder.
She felt nice with her washed hair. The T-shirt and black jeans weren't a bad addition either. Cody had longed for her usual attire during her stay in the distant past. But it was clear her sister was not adjusting as easily as she. "Stop shifting." She scolded, elbowing Gretta in the ribs.
"But it's awful. I hate it." She whined, pulling at the tight jeans. "Why can't I just wear my dress?"
"Because this is how people dress in this era. You can't be walking around in that thing drawing attention to yourself." It was the last thing they needed right now. "Look... Just maybe go for a walk or something. Give us time to figure out what to do next. Stay close by ya?"
"Fine." Gretta huffed, feeling a little left out. She would walk as far as she damn well pleased.
"So you know where my mother is?" She perked up upon her sister waltzing dramatically from the room. "Where is she, I would like to meet her."
"Maybe it would be better to explain Isobel to you first..." Stefan felt a little uneasy as he tried to figure out how much she could handle. "She isn't really the mothering type... She... She isn't exactly safe to be around."
"It's not like I was expecting her to be happy to see me. I mean, she did give me up. Put me into the system..." She had left me with horrible people.
