Chapter 11: NEVER LET ME GO

Mackenzie sat silently in the back of one of the BAU's SUVs, tapping on the door. They were on their way to the location that Dante was suspected to be. Mackenzie was becoming impatient and her nerves were starting to get a hold of her. Despite the fact she knew Shannon wouldn't kill Dante intentionally, Mackenzie had no idea what state she would find him in.

The SUV came to a halt and JJ and Reid got out of the front followed by Mackenzie. Blake, Morgan, Hotch and Rossi were already there and as soon as the three reached them Morgan held out Mackenzie's gun to her. He had confiscated it at the apartment when she had nearly shot him.

"Thanks," Mackenzie said putting it in its holster on her hip. She was already in her bullet-proof vest and in clothes ready for a tactical assault. Mackenzie looked around as she heard footsteps behind her.

"Mackenzie if you even think you're going in there, you've got another thought coming," Lieutenant Carter said.

"Like hell I'm not! This is Dante we're talking about. If there's even a chance he's in there, I'm going," Mackenzie argued.

"Detective Evans that wasn't a suggestion. You have three broken ribs and a head injury. You are in no condition to take part in a tactical assault!"

"Carter you know I have done assaults in far worse conditions. I'm one of your best marksmen and hand-to-hand specialists. Shannon beating me was a one-off incident. It'll never happen again."

"Mackenzie..." Carter began.

"Actually Lieutenant, we could use Detective Evans in this assault. She knows Larson better than anyone. It could come in useful," Hotch said.

Carter gave him a dirty look. "Okay, but if she gets hurt again, it's on you."

"Of course."

Lieutenant Carter walked away leaving Mackenzie with the team. She looked over at the building they were about to storm. It was an abandoned apartment block that Mackenzie recognised to be the place that got set on fire when she was a teenager. It hadn't burned down but it had received severe damage.

"Detective Evans, you're going to be taking the third floor and roof with JJ, Blake and a SWAT member. You'll take leading point and go through normal assault protocol, understood?" Morgan said.

"Yes agent."

"Good. Reid and I will take the first floor and second floor with two Swat members and Hotch and Rossi will take the ground floor with two Swat members also. Are you ready?"

"Yes."

"Blake, JJ here is a floor plan of the third floor. Go with Mackenzie and get a plan together. We'll go ahead when everyone is ready and has a plan," Hotch said, giving JJ the floor plan.

"Yes Sir," JJ replied.

Mackenzie looked at JJ and Blake and gestured towards a quiet area. Mackenzie took the plan off JJ but she didn't get very far before hearing a very faint cry for help. JJ and Blake must have heard it too because they both turned towards Mackenzie who had gone very pale.

"That was from the roof. Dante's alive," She said and started to run towards the building, pulling her gun before JJ and Blake could react. "DANTE!"

"Mackenzie, slow down!" JJ yelled, chasing after her although it was too late. Mackenzie had already made it past the tape and through the front door. She was fast.

"Hotch, we just heard Dante call for help. We need back-up. Mackenzie just made a run for it. JJ is following," Blake shouted.

Hotch turned round and gave a concerned look and Morgan started running towards where JJ went.

By the time Mackenzie even thought about what she was doing she had hit the third floor and was still scaling the stairs at an extremely fast pace. Her chest was killing her and she was starting to feel dizzy but she ignored it. When she finally made it to the roof she burst through the fire escape doors, breathing heavily.

"DANTE," She screamed, turning her torch on.

"Kenzie," A voice coughed.

It was very weak but it was definitely Dante.

Mackenzie ran forward but it didn't take long for her to see Dante. He was propped up against the top of a ventilation shaft and was very pale under her torch's beam. But when she moved the beam down Mackenzie nearly threw up.

Dante's shirt was drenched in blood.

But before she had the chance, Mackenzie pushed the nausea back and knelt down beside him. She ripped open his shirt to get a better look at the damage. Dante's torso was covered in slashes varying in depth and was extremely bruised. He was lucky to be alive.

"I'm so glad your okay," Dante whispered lifting his hand slightly as if trying to touch her cheek.

"Dante just stay still, please," Mackenzie while taking off her bullet proof vest. She then turned around and yelled, "HELP! I FOUND HIM!"

"What are you doing?"Dante asked as he watched Mackenzie pull off her black shirt revealing a white vest top. He could now see some of her scars, each of them being a pink line.

"Trying to stop the bleeding," Mackenzie said putting the shirt on his stomach and pressing down hard.

Dante flinched away from the pain and Mackenzie nearly broke at this point. She hated seeing him like this. Her strong Dante. He looked so pale and weak.

"I'm so sorry Mackenzie," He said.

"About what?"

"I love you," Dante whispered his eyes closing.

"Dante you dare! Open your eyes. Come on you can't leave me. Not now. Not like this," Mackenzie said, her voice finally breaking. She tapped Dante's cheeks with one hand still holding down the shirt but got no response.

She quickly checked his pulse but got nothing. She let out a sob as she started to give CPR and looked back at where she had come from a minute or so before.

"HELP! I NEED A MEDIC!" She cried still giving Dante CPR.

When she hit the thirty compressions, she gave him two rescue breaths but got nothing so carried on giving him the compressions. A few seconds later, JJ, Morgan and two paramedics came bursting through the door.

"He's not breathing. He doesn't have a pulse," Mackenzie sobbed.

"Miss please step back," One of the paramedic said.

Mackenzie pushed herself back giving them room. She then properly started to cry. She felt like she was suffocating. Dante couldn't die. Not now. She didn't know what she would do without him. Mackenzie looked down at her hands and found that she was covered in his blood. Including her vest top. She felt sick.

Before she threw up near the paramedics, Mackenzie scrambled even further to the side and vomited. She heard someone come up behind her but she didn't care.

"Detective, I need you to calm down." It was JJ.

Mackenzie let out another sob and stood up but didn't make it very far. Her legs buckled and she fell forward, blacking out. If it hadn't been for JJ grabbing her, Mackenzie would have gone over the edge of the roof.

"Morgan a little help over here," JJ called back still holding the extremely pale twenty-eight year old.
