Chapter 11: Her Real Intention Part Three: Midorima's Feelings

A tall green headed teen is currently fixing the bandages in his fingers. He then starts to stretch his muscled arms and warms his body up. He is preparing for a practice match that their coach scheduled to them. This time only he, Kise, Murasakibara and Mayuzumi represent the first strings. Kise is unusually quiet but still smiling when a fan greeted him. Murasakibara looked bored while eating a bag of potato chips. He figured the tall giant would not play at all because their fearsome captain is currently not in there.

He took a seat on the bench but this time he looked at the empty space beside him. He knew something was missing but he could not figure exactly what. Refraining himself from unnecessary distractions, he focused himself with the coach instructions. He never understands the need for these instructions since they will win anyway.

They entered the court. In each of his step towards the center, he is mentally assessing the distance between him and the basket. He shut his eyes and felt each bounce of the ball as he listened to his own heartbeat. He felt that he was alone in the court. He could only see himself and the ring.

A familiar sound echoed in the whole gym then the game starts quickly afterwards. He launched his feet towards the ball as if it was coupled with his heart. Suddenly the ball came flying towards him. He saw Mayuzumi's eyes connected with him and he unconsciously raised both his hands and bended down his knees a little. As if on cue, his arms throw it with his perfect shooting form. The ball arched high in a flawless ellipse and entered the ring smoothly.

He understood Mayuzumi was handling their game play well. She knew who should she passed and when should she passed. He remembered his practices with her. She taught him that her passes though always left bruises in his palms were great help in improving his shooting skills. The game went smoothly afterwards.

At the second half with them 100 points leading, Mayuzumi was benched. Midorima noticed her smiles as she went to their locker room to rest. The game after that was a mess. It angered him that the passes were not coordinating with their movement.

He looked at the copycat blond in his front as he messes with his form when trying to receive a weak pass from a second stringer. His palm almost let the ball slips when his body moves immediately forward. Since his form is already off, he cannot shoot properly. He saw as the blond ignored the coach reprimanding him and only looking at his palm. He noticed that his hands were shaking.

Still unsure of what is happening, he continued focusing on the game. Someone passed the ball to him. He was in the middle court but he knew his shot could make it. He raised his arms and prepares to shoot but before he could release his palm begin hurting. He felt a rhythmic spasm starting at the end of his palms all the way to the tips of his fingers. Being stubborn, he ignored the pain and used his left to push the ball to the ring. The push felt like a light tap as his fingers twitched. The ball did not even reached the three point zone. Everyone is shocked at the plays of the two supposedly miracles of their generation.

"Bastard, toying with us all of a sudden!" he could hear the cursing of players from the other team.

The two decided to go to the hospital to know what is happening in them. After the examination they nervously wait for the doctor's assessments.

"Have you been pushing yourself a lot for these past few weeks?"

Midorima gulp and remembered all those tedious training with Mayuzumi. Kise did not differ in his thoughts. He is bowing his head maybe from regret and did not want to meet anyone's eyes.

"I see sign of focal dystonia but I would not know for certain. We will have series of tests after this."

"Doctor, I don't understand. Are you implying we have yips?" Midorima asked.

"Well you see, these symptoms are pretty common in athletes but this is the first time I heard it from your age. When there is too much exercise or stressed in the muscles of the palm, especially in repeated activities, it will become stiff and will involuntarily move."

He looked again at the blond and he could see his face portrayed shocked, disbelief and regret. Midorima felt like he was splashed with cold water. His heart beat violently. He looked at his own palm which is still shaking.

"But doc, how could we cure this?" he gathered his strength to ask the doctor.

The doctor looked at his eyes directly. "There is no known cure for this and we could not know for certain if it will be permanent. As you could see the both of you already loss motor control in your hands, in the meantime you should stop playing basketball."

The doctor continued writing his report while the two of them did not know how to digest the new information.

In the next morning, they confronted Mayuzumi when they saw her at the gym. No other players were present. They asked her what she did to them. She calmed them and asked them what they were trying to accuse on her. He explained to her what the doctor said to them.

"So that's what happened?" her blank face now looked concerned.

"Akashi never said that this will happen. He just instructed me to play with you like that. I thought I was helping you. I'm sorry. If I had known that his instructions were to destroy your plays I would never do that. I'm sorry." She said while bowing and shaking her head.

Midorima and Kise looked at each other. So this was all their captain's doing after all.

Midorima went home early after that day. He did not even want to go to the gym. He did not want to hear anything that would remind him of basketball. He did not want to see Akashi. He thought that he should not have trusted him. The bastard only thinks of himself.

You should stop playing basketball. There were no other words that could hurt an athlete than hearing that he could no longer play. He could no longer do what he wanted to do.

He remembered that he needed to return a book in the library but he was not feeling well. He always used his extra time to read in the library. Learning new things was his hobby and he preferred the peaceful atmosphere in there. Then he noticed his teal head teammate was always reading on the library. He learned that she was a member of the library committee. She stayed late to read books and organized some of the books there. He would notice himself being enticed by the phantom's mysterious demeanor.

He would be amused to see Tetsumi pouting when she could not reach a certain book. He will go to her side and help her while avoiding any eye contact. When she was closed, he could hear his heart pounding hard. His trance would be broken by a gratitude coming out from her but he would refused to acknowledged any of them.

He followed the path to his home. Each step reminds him of Tetsumi. Until recently, they always walk home together. It is not that he had a choice when he wanted to stay late and read books. At the same time their home was on the same way and she could meet accidents with her weak presence. It's not that he care about her or anything but he did just what he usually does.

"Ano, Midorima-kun, I'll go this way. Thanks for walking home with me" she said.

"As if I have a choice." he said.

"Well, even if you say so, thank you Midorima-kun. I enjoyed the company. Please be careful on your way" she said. There was a lump forming in his throat that it made him cough.

He remembered the lucky item he bought for her.

"Here" he extends his arms which holding a stuffed toy towards the teal head.

"It's your lucky item today. I haven't had the chance to give it to you" he tried not to looked at her but he could feel that she is hugging the toy.

"It's so soft. Thank you very much Midorima-kun" he heard her say. He walk fast immediately as he could feel the warmness moving up in his head.

When the captain and the teal head had a relationship, he could no longer walk beside the two of them. He could only watch the teal head in a distance. In her back, he imagined that he was the one with the teal head. He would see her smile once in a while. He regrets the times he did not looked at her when they are walking home together. Even though he liked Tetsumi, he greatly respect their captain and their friendship so he thought he should give them time for each other.

The green head was walking towards a convenient store when she saw the teal head having a hard time walking home. He could see her body is aching from too much practice. He wanted to ask her if he could carry her at his back. He wanted to tend her wounds and reprimand her for trying so hard but his voice betrayed him.

"See Kuroko, you were playing because you were trying to struggle out of your solitude. Geez, you're bothersome. You know, it doesn't matter for us. Nothing is more important than winning, to be the strongest, to be at the top. And you could not be like that when you are with what you call as friends. To be the strongest you have to do it alone, for in the top you have to be the only one" the green head said.

He looked at the teal head while she passed him. He could not help it so he followed her home. Even from a distance he will make sure she will get home safely.

He regretted trusting her heart to the selfish red head. He remembered when he saw her crying during class. He knew that he was one of the reasons that Tetsumi was hurt so he did not want to go near her anymore. But today, he wished she was here by his side.

I missed her warmth.

A/N:

focal dystonia or yips - a random scientific term! lol.. just kidding xD .. it is the apparent loss of fine motor skills. Athletes affected by the yips demonstrate a sudden, unexplained loss of previous skills. Athletes affected by the yips sometimes recover their ability, sometimes compensate by changing technique, or may be forced to abandon their sport at the highest level.

AND BECAUSE I'M EXCITED FOR THE NEXT PART HERE'S A PREVIEW! It's on caps, you can see my excitement.. lol.. :D

~ Preview of Her Real Intention Part 4: Mayuzumi's Intentions

"They tried to avoid you during practice because they don't want you to know that the only talent you have is destructive to other. That is why Aomine no longer attend practice to get away from you."

Tetsumi look at her. She is now shaking and her knees feel weak. She cannot breathe and is desperately gasping for air.

"Some friend you are" Tetsumi's eyes widened as Mayuzumi's words sink deeply within her mind. She closed her eyes and feel twinges in her heart.

Tetsumi let all warm tears escape from her eyes. She thought all of her friends are suffering because of her. She remembered the last games she played with them. She understands now why they keep avoiding her passes. She shook her head and felt disappointed with herself. She is so selfish. Basketball is really never meant for her.
