I tried adding a link to the dress I pictured Winry in, however it kept disappearing so just try to picture it the best you can from the way I described it! :)
Winry's POV
I brushed slowly through my damp hair as I sat down at the vanity. My room was very beautiful, but I enjoyed the simplicities of the countryside. I don't think I'd ever be able to live such a lavish lifestyle. I chuckled to myself as I thought about the look on Edward's face when he first arrived. It was probably disgusted by all the decorative pillows. I could picture him throwing them off in every direction, grumbling. My thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock on the door. Turning my body towards the noise, I prayed that it was Edward. Any chance of seeing him at all always made my heart flutter - even if I had seen him only a few hours ago.
"Who is it?" I asked, alarmed by my awful attempt to cover up the hesitancy in my voice.
"It's Christian. I was instructed to give you this dress by my grandfather? Something about his friend inviting you to the event tonight?"
I smiled, thankful to hear his kind voice on the other side of the door. It may have not been Edward, but at least it was a friendly face. Setting the brush down, I quickly walked over to unlock and open the door. Christian's dark olive eyes shun with a certain amount of anxiety, but a small smile graced his lips.
"I don't remember her name but I know who sent it." I said calmly, opening the door wider. "Would you like to come in briefly?"
He hesitated but nodded in silence as his eyes darted the halls for any sign of others, quickly stepping in and closing the door behind him.
"Sorry, I have to keep on my toes always. You never know who is watching." He apologized, carefully laying down the dress on the bed. "My wife...she would love this."
My heart ached to hear the longing in his voice. I knew very little about Christian, but I was aware that he was married with a young child named Tom.
"You must miss her so much..." I said softly. He sighed deeply and stepped to the side.
"I do, very much. I'm sure she's worried sick - not being able to have contact with her or my son has been so difficult. But I have to keep them safe."
I placed a hand on his shoulder in comfort. There was nothing I could do or say to make his heart feel better. He turned to me, a new look in his eyes.
"Winry, my grandfather and his friends have these...interests. These formal gatherings can be a bit unpredictable. A lot of them make "donations" as they would call them, to the cause."
I scrunched my eyebrows in confusion, unsure of where he was going with this. He clenched his jaw in apprehension.
"I'm not sure if I'm the one that should be telling you this."
"What is it?" I questioned, feeling my nerves bundle up inside me.
"A few of them see themselves as automail enthusiasts. So much so that they enjoy placing bets that go to the cause. But they also find a certain enjoyment in watching the automail be...tested out..." He stumbled, running a hand through his light brown bangs.
"Just tell me." I said, a little bit more demanding that I meant to sound.
"It's barbaric...but it's like betting on horses for them, they see it as pleasure to watch people brutally fight one another to see who's automail holds the most potential."
"Like...kill each other?" I asked as my throat began feeling dry. He paused as he looked away unsure about continuing, but then nodded firmly.
"Sometimes...but sometimes for instance, in a special case, where they need the person...they'll stop the event before they die." Christian explained, his nervous tick for darting around the room beginning once more. I felt my stomach do a flip at his words.
"How is that any better!?"
"It's not...but they need Edward so they wouldn't have him killed. It's just very possible that they'll have this sort of thing going on tonight. It's disgusting. It's downright evil...but that's exactly what this entire society is - corrupt, disturbed, inhumane..." He cleared his throat. "But Edward has always done really well! The only time he gets remotely roughed up is when they pit Roma against him. But Roma usually comes out looking just as beat-"
"What are you talking about!?" I gasped. While I trusted my techniques for making the best automail for Edward...he also didn't have his alchemy anymore to transmute it as he had in the past. Christian waved his hands nervously.
"It's okay, just calm down before please!" He urged softly. "He's always done fine in the past! I just thought you should know without being shocked tonight!"
"But in the past I wasn't working on Roma's automail..." I replied, bringing a hand to my face in horror of the thought. I remembered him mentioning about the last automail mechanic not up to his standard, so Edward encouraged me to work hard on everyone's automail to survive. I felt tears threatening to fall from my lashes as the knot in my stomach grew. "Roma...he asked for blades in his automail!"
Christian's face drained of color slightly, his hand reaching out to comfort was drawn back immediately to his side at the sound of footsteps. We both waited quietly, our hearts racing as they came closer. He let out a large breath of relief after the steps began to fade away down the hall. Turning his attention back to me, he gave a sympathetic look.
"From the little bit I know of him, he and his brother have survived much worse than this. Don't blame yourself, you didn't have a choice of enhancing Roma's automail. You do whatever it takes to survive here. You're strong Winry. I know you're both determined enough to make it out of this and put a stop to it. My grandfather would be furious if Roma did anything beyond his orders anyways. He see's Edward as a valuable asset." He consoled. I straightened up my posture and blinked away tears. I needed to be strong. His sympathetic look turned into a small smile as he chuckled lightly. "Besides, he's the most stubborn man I've ever met. I don't think anything could kill that."
We laughed softly in unison at how true the statement was. For a small moment, it made me feel a little less guilty about Roma's automail limb, but I couldn't help but have a dark feeling still well up inside me. It would be a lie to say that I wasn't still greatly concerned.
"Well." Christian cleared his throat, rocking on his heels. "I'll leave you to getting ready. It starts soon and being late does not sit well with my grandfather. Just remember to be safe."
I nodded my head.
"Thank you. You too."
I turned my direction towards the dress nearby as I heard my door close. My feet padded against the hardwood floor as I carefully inspected it, frowning slightly. While I had worn dresses in the past, I couldn't remember the last time I actually had one on. I worked constantly in my jumpsuit and during the times I wore casual clothing, I normally favored pants and a top as my go to. I couldn't even remember the last time I wore a skirt...
Removing the protective covering, I was happily relieved it to be fairly modest. I must admit, I was a bit afraid of some provocative piece of cloth tied and sewn in weird sections - not exactly something I'd really want to be wearing in public. I couldn't even think about wearing lingerie in front of Ed... I blushed deeply and shook my head. The satin felt smooth on my fingertips as I held it against me. Growing curious, I quickly removed the clothing I had currently on in order to truly see how it looked. It was a nice reprieve from the constant worry I faced being here as I found myself lost in the dress. It was a chiffon off-the-shoulder with a split in the front that traveled up my thigh, but it's length to the floor gave it a classic elegance. I don't think I ever owned a black dress - I really didn't own many dresses period. I couldn't help but smile a little at how pleased I was to see how well it fit my figure. I might be what you'd call a tomboy, but I definitely didn't look like one in this dress.
I bit my lip as I studied myself in the mirror, noticing my straight hair wasn't exactly suiting the dress. Styling hair was definitely something I never dipped my feet into before, but I'd have to learn fairly quickly. Shifting through the vanity's drawer, I was happy to find a curling iron. Sure, I'd never used it before, but how hard could it be?
Looking over to the nearby grandfather clock that hung on the wall, I realized I would need to figure it out fast. I faintly remembered watching my mother use one to curl her hair loosely as she pinned it all over to one side. It was simple, but it always looked beautiful on her.
"Ow!" I hissed, snapping my finger away from it's blistering heat. I guess it would be a little harder than I imagined. But I was determined to nail this. Taking a deep breath, I exhaled quickly.
"Okay, you got this."
Edward's POV
I tugged at the tie around my neck, loosening it. These kinds of events always made me bored out of my mind, so much so that I had made it a point to stand against the wall, one hand in my pocket, a drink in the other, and the most unamused expression I could muster. For the most part, people left me alone. Alfred was too busy at the time speaking foreign affairs and spewing nonsense about the cause to his friends in high places. I frowned deeply at the sea of faces, disgruntled by the obnoxious amounts of wealth almost overwhelmed me as much as the ridiculous amounts of perfume. The most disturbing thing about the smiling faces were their desire for bloodshed. Just like dog fights, they'd make "donations - as they called them - to those of us they forced into a fight. I widened my eyes and swore under my breath - crap...I didn't tell her about it. She was going to be more than mildly upset...
All I could do at this point was pray to a god I didn't believe in that they wouldn't take part in placing their bets on us tonight. The last thing I wanted Winry to see is Roma and I fight each other and then blow her cover...I threw the rest of my drink back, feeling it slightly burn my throat as it went down. While I'd usually get buzzed during these things, I'd need to avoid the urge to escape the boredom tonight. Winry would be present and I'd need to keep on my toes.
I eyed a nervous Christian walking towards me, his head shaking in disappointment at the sight of my loosened tie and hand shoved into my pant pocket.
"Eric, you should really straighten up your appearance..." He mumbled. I raised an eyebrow at him and scoffed.
"Sure. I'll get right on that."
He sighed heavily and leaned against the wall next to me. I noticed hints of similarity between he and Alphonse - it was probably the disappointed tone for my lack of being polite. Alphonse couldn't stand how rude I could be, and jesus did he get snarky about it when it came to being rude to Winry. I nodded my head for one of the waiters to take my empty glass and saw from the corner of my eye that Christian had become fidgety.
"What?" I asked, thanking the man for taking my glass as he rushed away to serve others.
"Should you really be drinking?" He said, a nervous tone ringing in his voice. I scratched the back of my neck and rolled my eyes.
"It was one drink."
"But...what if they place bets?"
"If I can go against him when I've had 3 than I can go against Roma after one drink." I scowled. How many Alphonses were going to be around to lecture me through my entire life? I heard him exhale at my comment, but he said nothing else. Good. I wasn't in the mood to argue, even if it was trivial. To be honest, I was in a royal mood after Winry had been invited to this stupid thing. That old hag from earlier didn't need to drag her in even further...
I watched as Roma smoothly weaved his way through the crowd, eyeing a woman in her 20's with long black hair. I gagged at his false gentleman exterior as he wooed her with compliments and flirtations. I felt sorry for the woman, but if it meant he would be distracted away from Winry, then so be it. I scowled as I heard the woman laugh along with Roma, clearly drawn in by him.
"Winry, my dear, you look absolutely breathtaking!"
My eyes immediately snapped towards the older woman's voice, the woman from earlier who stood next to what appeared to be her family. The sound of her dainty voice made my ears hurt, but I was more distracted by the sudden appearance of Winry. I felt my heart halt as my eyes found her, my jaw slightly slack. Winry was always beautiful, but was completely mesmerized by the sight of her right then and there. I watched as she smiled at the older woman who was fervently clapping her hands. Unfortunately...this also drew the attention of Roma. I watched as he smoothed his red hair back and smile devilishly at the sight of Winry, so much so that he stopped listening to the woman he had previously been talking to. She peered around Roma to see what he had become distracted by and frowned, a jealous placement on her mouth.
All of a sudden, a deep boiling rage filled my chest as I continued to watch him eye her, licking his lips. I took a step forward, only to have my arm firmly grasped by Christian who shook his head, his eyes pleading.
"You can't. You'll draw attention." He said. "You know you'll just make it worse for her if you do anything. He will just pursue her even more if he knows it bothers you. Besides, you two aren't even supposed to be that acquainted remember? She's just your mechanic."
I narrowed my eyes down at the floor and shoved my hands into my pockets angrily. I could definitely use a second drink now...
My eyes snapped up towards her direction as I found myself watching her again, unable to tear myself away. I watched her lips move into a variety of smiles as she conversed with the woman, finding myself completely taken over by the way she carried herself so confidently. For the next few minutes, I couldn't help but be drawn in. While I wasn't one to be the gushy romantic type, it wasn't exactly usual for me to see her so formal looking. A certain overwhelming hot feeling crept up my neck, pulling at my collar in attempts to cool myself off. While it was pretty unusual for me to become distracted - especially in such a dangerous environment, my eyes couldn't help but wander across her exposed shoulders and how...form fitting her dress was. I almost choked as she turned her head towards my direction, catching me off guard as her blue eyes connected with my golden ones. My face flushed hot as she stared back at me. For a brief moment, it felt like time had stopped and I almost forgot that we were playing a dangerous game. But there wasn't a single moment of peace that lasted long in this place...
"Well, well, well. It looks like you noticed the frame on that one too."
I blinked and turned my head towards the voice that I had come to deeply despise. I wanted to rip his throat out, but instead gave him a bored glance.
"I noticed that my mechanic is here when she has no business being present." I said flatly, trying to contain how much his being bothered me to no end. He scoffed and crossed his arms.
"You're telling me you wouldn't want a piece of that?"
I clenched my jaw tightly, afraid I'd chip my own teeth.
"No. I don't." I mumbled. It was a full blown lie, but I'd lie my way to hell if it meant I could drag his ass down with me.
"Oh, well I assumed from the way you were caught up staring at her that you did. So clearly you don't mind if I have a go at that tonight?"
He was toying with me and he knew it as a dark grin spread across his lips.
"And what makes you so sure she even wants to contract something from you?" I scoffed. Christian tensed up beside me, unsure of how to intervene. Roma laughed and placed a hand on my shoulder.
"I always find a way."
I balled my fist in my pocket, my knuckles white as my fingernails dug into my fleshy palm. Just in the moment that I wasn't going to contain my anger, Christian came to the rescue as he pointed out Alfred who waved for Roma to come. Roma removed his hand from my shoulder and began walking in the direction of Alfred. I could get through this. I could control myself. He sighed deeply, but before leaving he leaned in closely as I felt his breath hit my face. The same sick smile crawling across his face from earlier.
"Just make sure you don't come near my room, she might be a little loud tonight." He remarked, eyes bright at the sight of my enragement. He chuckled as he turned away and began heading off in the direction of Alfred. My anger getting the better of me, I took a step forward with my fist tightened, ready to strike him down.
"You fucking-"
"Knock it off. You HAVE to stay calm. For her sake too." Christian pleaded sternly as he quickly pulled me back. His eyes darted around for any attention drawn to us. "Don't be stupid. He's testing you. Keep a cool head."
I grunted in response, my eyes quickly catching Winry staring over, concerned. I realized at that moment that I was risking her safety and calmed myself down. Clenching my jaw, I took a deep breath before taking my place once more to lean against the wall beside Christian. I'd just have to bide my time before I could make Roma eat his words...I could feel Christian ease up a bit with relief, thankful that I was able to restrain my desire to beat Roma's face in, but boy was it hard.
My eyes strayed around the banquet hall, slightly blinded by the shimmering chandeliers that hung lowly on the ceiling. The rest of the evening I spent speaking when needed, spewing bullshit to Alfred's friends, and continuing to look in Winry's direction to ensure she was okay. I was grateful to see Roma too caught up with Alfred for him to be able to go pursue Winry, making my night ten times easier. After sometime, I began to relax. By this point they usually began their twisted game of watching us kill each other, so maybe tonight was one of those nights they didn't.
Oh how wrong I was.
Everyone's attention was drawn to the sound of clinking as Alfred's usual spokesperson silenced the room. The slightly plump woman demanded silence, despite her appearance of the warm-hearted aunt type. Mildred wasn't an attractive woman, but she was feared. Her tongue was venomous and it sang a tune of lies to get what she wanted. Despite her welcoming appearance, she was twisted. She was just as bad as Alfred - if not worse - in the sense that she truly found joy of watching us fight and sometimes kill each other. Mildred took delight in controlling anyone and everyone, and while Roma was Alfred's right hand man, she was the snake on the left. Her tightly curled hair bounced slightly as she smoothed out her dress that was two times too small.
"Good Evening my lovely ladies and gentlemen. I'd first like to start off with a round of applause to once again welcome our guest from Drachma tonight. It is with great pleasure that I say this, as our lovely guest is joining our cause!" She exclaimed, her delightful tone irritating to my ears. She raised her hand to hush the clapping as she smiled once more, her eyes finding me in the crowd. "With that being said, we would like to end the night with one last treat. As many of you are familiar with, we are very generous to the cause. I, myself, have made an astounding donation tonight! For tonight's party games, we would like to invite you all to the gardens outside for our little spar match! As you know, all of our men and women that take place have always been willing, and those that have died - have died for the cause." She paused, her eyes shimmering with excitement. Clearing her throat, she proceeded, "So! For tonight! We have our beloved Roma and..." Her eyes came back to meet mine. "Eric." She smiled.
I looked at her sternly as the room filled with excited murmurs. What a fucking lie...no one was willing. It was either partake or be killed. Sure, they wouldn't kill me since I was still useful, but slow torture was always something these sick bastards enjoyed. I knew without looking that Roma's smile was splitting his face at the mention of us pitted against the other.
"If we could have everyone meet us outside in the gardens within the next thirty minutes! And if we could have the mechanic look over their automail to ensure both are in proper conditions for tonight's match please. We...really do encourage a fair match." Mildred's voice oozed with a sickening tone. But it was the sight of Winry's piercing glare that made my stomach flip as I knew she was infuriated. I'll admit...it was pretty fucked up to not give her an insight of what could happen, but I was afraid she'd try to intervene someway and get herself killed.
Hell, I already knew I had a destiny with her wrench finally cracking my skull open for this...
Winry's POV
I pushed my dress aside as much as possible as inspecting Roma's automail, my mind whirling away with what to do. Should I loosen a screw? Would Roma blame Edward for cheating? Would they even find out? I yanked my wrench tightly, my anger getting the better of me.
"You can take it easy there, it's your own craftsmanship after all." Roma said, slightly bewildered by how forceful I was being on my beloved automail. I bit my lip, refusing to look at him.
"My automail is capable of a little tough love, thanks." I muttered sarcastically. But it was this remark that had my arm yanked sternly upwards and away from my current inspection as I found my face barely inches away from his own. A smirk that made my skin crawl spread across his lips.
"Perhaps you are also...capable of a little tough love, hm?"
"I doubt I'm your type." I growled, yanking my arm free. He crossed his arms and laughed.
"Attractive women are always my type, especially when they are a challenge." He whispered, towering over me. "But sometimes free spirits just need a little tough love to be broken in, don't you agree?"
I stepped away as I wiped my hands on a damp cloth and picked up my tool bag. I have to play my part - I have to endure this if I want to keep surviving...Taking a deep breath, I turned back around to face him and forced a smile on my face.
"Well, maybe if you win tonight, you'll find out if you've won me over or not. So don't disappoint me." I lied through my teeth, a bitter taste in my mouth at the very words. Fortunately it seemed to have worked as his face looked slightly surprised by my flirtatious reply.
My feet were light as feathers as I quickly walked out the door, quickly closing it behind me. The way the dress curved to my figure made it difficult to walk as fast as I wanted...this being one of the reasons I favored my wonderful overalls and jumpsuits that I worked in. It felt like forever as I hurriedly paced to Edward's room, wanting nothing more than to just be with him - TO BASH HIS FACE IN.
Out of all the things to keep secret - THIS? I had to learn this from Christian? Eyeing Edward's door I didn't even bother to knock, angrily throwing it open and dropping my tool bag as it thumped to the ground loudly, tools clashing together. My eyes scanned the room to find Ed staring at me from a chair near his bed, a perplexed look on his face. I took a step forward and felt my feet ache from the ridiculous length of high heels - something I wasn't accustomed to. Groaning loudly, I kicked them off of my feet and stomped towards the blonde man.
"You!" I hissed, grabbing him by his tie and yanking him upwards. "How could you keep something like that from me?! You're the one who said we needed to keep a level head remember? How do you expect me to keep any sort of peace of mind when you don't fill me in!"
He blinked a few times, somehow surprised by my reaction, but his eyes shifted away from mine as he frowned deeply. I stood there staring up at him for a good minute, waiting for any sort of response. But when none came I loosened my grip on his tie and sighed, realizing we didn't have much time before he'd have to go to the gardens.
"Sit down so I can look at your leg." I said, my voice slightly shaky. His golden eyes returned back to me as he raised his eyebrows.
"But you already looked it over earlier."
"Will you just let me check it already so I can at least know it's in perfect shape for this crap?" I groaned, putting a hand on my hip impatiently. "You have to change anyways, unless you plan on fighting him in dress pants."
He sneered at my remark as he yanked off his tie. I tried my best to contain the blush from spreading across my face as he began undressing, looking away to glance out the window. You'd think by now we would be used to this part, so why did I still feel like some embarrassed teenager? Clearing my throat I pointed to the edge of the bed so I could sit in the seat next to it.
"How much time do they usually give you before these things?" I asked, dragging my tool bag closer to the bed as I sat down all the while tugging at my dress as it squeezed to my figure a little bit more than to my liking.
"Around 20 minutes maybe...They usually take a bit to get everyone situated outside, plus the last automail mechanic wasn't very good when it came to working quickly." He replied, his golden eyes flashing towards the sight of my dress and quickly looked away. I noticed Edward would never admit these moments of attraction, and decided to ignore his curious eyes. I examined his port, checking screws along the way to ensure they weren't lose. While I had faith that his automail was fine, especially after looking at it prior - I was still nervous of it failing him somehow. It was a familiar feeling that I had dreaded every time he had to fight for his life in the past...
"Everything looks good." I said softly, brushing away the hair that had fallen into my view. I groaned impatiently as I tried to move my arm properly to use my wrench for one last checkup. "This thing is so constricting!"
I tossed my tools into my bag and stood up from my seat, eyeing my heels knowing that I'd have to wear them back out to the gardens. Placing my tools by the door I turned back around, noticed Edward standing and pulling his dress pants back on. We were quiet as he looked over at me, scrunching up his white shirt as he shoved his hands into his pockets. He cleared his throat before speaking,
"I...um, you..."
I raised an eyebrow at him as he continued stuttering out words, an amused smile spreading across my lips overtaking my angry frown.
"I'm just not used to seeing you dressed up like that." He laughed nervously, scratching the back of his head.
"You don't like it?"
"What? No! I mean yes! Ugh..." He ran his hand through his bangs and growled with embarrassment
I laughed softly as he grew frustrated. Had he taken a breath he would have realized I was only teasing him. But I found my smile fade back into the frown from earlier as it struck me that we would have to leave soon.
"Hey...Winry."
"What is it?" I asked, watching him roll up his sleeves, a similar stern sadness on his own lips as he looked at me.
"I'd like you to wait for me here."
"Why the hell would I do that!" I snapped with disbelief.
"Jeez Win can't you just do me a favor without fighting me on every single thing?" Edward growled, his eyes sparking with impatience. "I don't want you to watch this. It's nothing to do with you not being to handle it, but I can't focus when I'm worried about you."
I felt speechless as he took a few steps closer to me, his eyes apologetic, his ponytail falling over his shoulder as he reached his hand out to me but just as quickly dropped it back to his side.
"I'll stay here." I replied softly. His eyes lit up as they met with mine. "Don't get me wrong. I'm pissed at you still for not telling me...but if it helps I'll stay."
Edward shot me a lopsided smile that turned the corners of my mouth up, I hated how easily he could make me smile when I was angry. I was surprised to find him lean in and kiss my forehead gently. I don't think I'd ever stop being shocked by physical affections when it came to Ed, even when we were kids he wasn't one for it. My eyes threatened tears but I pushed them back, keeping a strong demeanor.
"Just...don't bust up my beloved automail you ass." I muttered as he snorted at my comment. He scoffed as he rolled his eyes, his face slightly tinted pink from his action earlier. As he pulled away a thought entered my mind. "Roma has blades in his automail."
Edward's eyes widened slightly, placing a hand in his pocket once more. I couldn't help but notice the way he kept checking his right pocket in particular. Maybe he had a knife of his own?
"I shouldn't be surprised. The last time he carried them he ripped open some poor guy's stoma-"
Edward cut himself off as he caught the horrified look on my face.
"I installed them..." I stated softly, peering down at my hands. A sickening feeling rushed over me harder than a tide, realizing that I had put Edward in a dangerous position. He grabbed me by the arms firmly, shaking me slightly.
"Win, I told you to do whatever it takes to survive here. Listen to me, you do exactly what they ask here. If that sick bastard wants knives in his automail give him twenty. As long as you're safe!" He hushed me, brushing my tears away as gently as he could. These times were so rare when Ed would break down his walls like this and be this comforting - he couldn't stand a girl crying. "You think after everything that I'm going to let some asshole with sharp objects beat me? Come on, I finally had the guts to tell you I love you! If anything you bashing your damn wrench over my head is going to be what kills me!" He laughed quietly, bringing me into his arms tightly to hush my cries.
"You better come back in one piece or I will kill you with my wrench." I sniffled, deciding there was no time for me to be weak...I had to stay strong. Edward loosened his grip from me and pulled away to look at me.
"Wait for me here. I'll be back as soon as I can. Lock the door after I leave, okay?"
"Alright." I said softly, nodding my head.
I watched as Ed hesitantly turned towards the door, the sound of the door click close was the worst noise I could hear at that moment. I felt a strange coldness surround me as I realized that the waiting game would be treacherous on my mentality - I'd have to come up with some way to pass the time or my thoughts would begin to overwhelm me.
All I could do was hope Edward wouldn't come back full of knife wounds...
