Chapter 12 - Captive

My body was carelessly thrown about by the two guards as we entered an isolated room in the mansion. A light flickered on, revealing the not so friendly interior of the place. Situated in the far corner was a lone wooden chair, which I was roughly shoved onto by one of the burly men. My hands were swiftly handcuffed together behind my back, trapping me in place as the two other bodies towered over me.

They both began talking into their radios, likely alerting the host of my presence. I gave them each a disinterested stare, masking my fear with the most convincing poker face I could muster. I couldn't show them the terror I felt as I let my mind wander over the various things they could do to me now that I was stuck with them.

My mask was ripped off once they finished their conversations with the other security staff on duty. I breathed a small sigh of relief as they failed to recognize my face, obviously not remembering the news report a couple of weeks ago. Not getting any of the answers that they wanted, they instead decided to interrogate me on my identity.

"What's your name?!" the first guard growled in an attempt to sound as threatening as possible.

I remained silent, knowing that lying was no longer an option, yet telling the truth wasn't either. Staying quiet for as long as I could was my best option until Matt could come up with a plan to get me out of there. Unfortunately, my lack of response only seemed to anger the two men, causing me to receive a bitter slap to the face.

The blow was so hard that I felt the taste of blood in my mouth, but the pain was nothing compared to what I had experienced over the last three weeks. I glared up at the tormentor who had hit me across the cheek, letting my defiance show on my features. Aiming for their feet, I spat the blood onto the ground in front of them.

Following my move, the second guard went for my neck, forming a tight grip on my airways. I struggled to breathe under his hold, but our tense altercation was interrupted when none other than the host himself entered the room. The relief I felt from the grip on my neck being removed was quickly destroyed by the knowing look upon Wakely's face.

"That's the bitch who worked for Fisk and sold us all out! What the hell is she doing here?"

The guards went silent at the doctor's statement, sending each other looks of confusion as they realized who I was. Another man had entered alongside the host, and I instantly recognized him as the menacing bouncer who had allowed myself and Matt in. Snapping into action, the doctor immediately pushed to two other guards out of the way, deciding to question me himself.

"What were you doing near my office?" He sneered at me, his eyes almost bulging out of their sockets.

"I got lost," I replied sarcastically, whilst silently praying in my head that Matt would turn up soon.

Unlike the first two guards, the doctor didn't use his temper to hurt me. Instead he turned to the man he had entered with, directing his next question to him.

"Who did she come with? What was their name?"

"The man on the invite was her husband. Seeing the situation she's in now, I'm guessing they used fake names. All I can tell you boss is that he was blind," the doorman responded, seemingly unphased by the doctor's fury.

Wakely smiled at the man's reply before returning his attention to me once more. I had clawed every bit of strength within me to maintain my brave facade, but the disturbing look I received from the doctor was almost enough to make it all crumble away. My hands clenched into fists as he leaned in closer so that we were face to face.

"Ah, so you were with that lawyer friend of yours. Matthew Murdock, isn't it? I thought we had sent you a warning to stay away from him. Maybe you need another one just to remind you," he threatened.

His words did nothing to scare me. Maybe a few weeks ago they would have affected me, but now I knew who Matt Murdock really was. If there was one person I certainly wasn't staying away from, it was the Devil who would help save me from this mess.

I stuck to keeping my mouth shut. The only thing I could do at that point was to hide any information I knew away from their cunning minds. Once they realized I was done giving them answers, the four of them began a hushed conversation at the other end of the room. I tried my best to listen in, but sadly I was no Daredevil, so my ears could only hear so far.

Wakely turned around and left the small huddle of their group. He strided over to me whilst the other three men continued to converse in their low voices. A look of triumph was plastered all over his face as he stood opposite my seated form.

"All the men in my building are looking for your lawyer friend. Tell me what you were doing near my office, or I will make sure that he suffers the consequences when we find him," the doctor threatened.

It took all the power within me to refrain from rolling my eyes at the man. I would happily have him start a fight with Matt Murdock, but Wakely would already be unconscious before he could even swing a punch at the blind vigilante. However, realizing that the doctor didn't know this information, I deceived him with a look of fear on my face.

"You won't find Matt. I sent him home an hour ago, after all this is no place for a blind man. Don't blame him for this, he has no idea," I pleaded with a fake tone of desperation.

Thomas seemed satisfied with my reaction and turned to walk over to his men again. They paid me no attention as they continued scheming at the other end of the isolated room. I looked around for an escape route, trying to do something resourceful whilst they held me captive. Shifting my gaze to the window beside me, my eyes glimmered at the figure they saw.

The lights in the room were instantly smashed as the lean body made its entrance into the room. All around me was plunged into darkness, causing the rushed sound of guns being loaded by the four men who were also there. As always, the masked man had come to save me in the nick of time. A hand on my back made my body tense up in fear, but I was soon reassured that I was in safe hands.

"I'm getting you out of here Scarlett," Matt whispered into my ear before breaking apart the handcuffs that chained my hands together. I dove to the ground as he leapt into action. The grunts of the guards he was in combat with being the only noise that littered the room.

The occasional sound of gunfire made me squirm against the floor. I knew that the vigilante was bulletproof in his outfit, but I certainly wasn't. The deafening crack of someone's bones caused me to tense up even more. Even though I couldn't witness the fight, it didn't mean that I was unaware of the damage each man was facing.

I started to crawl against the ground to the window; my only way of escape. Hoping that all of the men were too busy battling Daredevil to notice my movements, I hauled myself closer and closer to the exit. A small squeal left my mouth as a hard grip clamped down on my foot, pulling me back into the room. It wasn't long till the person's hold on me extended to my waist, giving them a good enough grip to drag me back to my feet.

The cold barrel of a gun was pressed to my head as I heard the vigilante's fight come to a swift end. There were no longer any grunts of the guards who were defending themselves, just the heavy breathing of the man who had taken them all down. I felt the body pressed against me pulling me back towards the window, using the dim moonlight to illuminate our bodies.

Looking up, I noticed that the man with a hold on me was Dr Wakely himself. He had a startling look of rage in his eyes, revealing his crazed state. It would only take one wrong move for him to release the trigger and shoot me dead. The vigilante walked over to us, his full red suit now in view as he sneered at the man with a gun to my head.

"Come any closer Daredevil and I'll kill your little damsel in distress," Wakely warned, "You've taken quite a liking to her, perhaps I should just get rid of the problem once and for all."

Despite my efforts to stay strong, I couldn't help a small whimper from escaping me as the doctor threatened to take my life away. Matt's eyes softened a little once he noticed my distress, but they quickly returned to their angered state as he resumed his glare on Dr Wakely.

"What do you want?" Daredevil growled.

"I want to walk out of here without another scratch on me. But if you don't mind, I'll need to keep her as insurance, to make sure that you don't just decide to kill me," Thomas responded.

"That's never going to happen," Matt answered brusquely.

The doctor took a few seconds to deliberate his next move as the vigilante in front of him remained unfazed. I noticed his eyes light up in amusement before a sinister smile painted its way onto his face.

"Well I guess we won't be needing the girl then," Thomas declared upon releasing the safety from his gun and pressing his finger on the trigger.

I closed my eyes before hearing the sound of gunfire. A tear fell down my face as my body was thrown to the ground in a harsh manner. My heart leapt in realization a few seconds later when no pain came. I looked up at the scene before me, the doctor now lay unconscious below the tense body of the vigilante. Matt rose to his feet, instantly checking me over for any signs of a bullet wound.

I lay there in a state of shock, unable to do or say anything to the man who had just saved me. Matt bent down, taking one of my trembling hands and holding it in his own. His action did little to comfort me, but I still forced a small smile of gratitude onto my face.

"It's over Scarlett, you're safe now," Matt reassured.

I responded with a slight nod and pushed my body up into a seated position. I leaned into him for comfort, not allowing myself to look at the unconscious bodies of all those around me. It wouldn't be long until other guards showed up after hearing the chaos which occured, so I willingly allowed Matt's arms to carry me as he leapt from the window and navigated his way back onto the street.

At that moment, there was so much to say to the man who had just rescued me. My mind whirled with unspoken thoughts which I needed to voice to him. Yet I felt too tired to utter any of them, still suffering from the shock of what had just happened. So instead, I settled on saying something that we both definitely knew at that point.

"I always seem to get into these situations with you Matt."

Author's Note

As you can probably tell by now, I'm quite a fan of writing action chapters; I hope this one didn't let you down either! I was excited to write about the first time Scarlett encountered Daredevil whilst also knowing his identity.

Future chapters are only going to get more intense as the story continues (prepare yourselves)! Remember to follow or favourite if you are new so that you can keep updated with new chapters :)
