Chapter 13
(Bay couldn't help the nervousness she felt in that moment. After all this time, they were finally going to discuss what happened. Or for better words, his betrayal. Bay knew obviously she was the one who needed to process things regarding the situation. If it were up to Emmett, of course, they would have discussed the matter a long time ago. But, he knew she needed space and he wanted to respect that. He wanted more than anything, to get past everything so they could move forward. It was up to Bay in the end, though. However, with her agreeing to talk to him, he couldn't help but hope that maybe they could work it out. Only time would tell)
(He could tell she was trying to figure out how to say what she wanted to say. This was their first serious conversation in what felt like months. When they meant to get everything out on the table, it didn't totally work as they wound up discussing the situation with his dad. Emmett was grateful Bay talked about it as that was part of the problem they had. Now, it was time to discuss the matter at hand)
(Emmett wanted to take her hands in his, but he wasn't sure she would let him do it a second time. He missed the warmness of her hands. The way they felt in his. He couldn't help but glance at her red plump lips. Oh, how he loved to kiss them in the past and how he would love to feel them against his lips again. Throughout all their faults, his and hers, he loved her more than anything. He didn't care about their ages. No, what he felt in his heart, he knew the feeling would last forever)
(He could tell she was ready to talk, so he nodded at her, prepared to listen or in his case, for her to sign her thoughts)
Bay: "When we first met, it was obvious there was a spark. Daphne could tell." (chuckles) "I didn't know it then, but my life was about to change." (sighs) "There was something different about you, different from everyone else." (shakes her head) "It wasn't because of the fact that you couldn't hear or that you seldomed talked. No, it was the fact that..."
(Bay pauses as she thinks about her next few words. Emmett offers a smile as a way of telling her to go on)
Bay: (smiles) "It was the fact that, despite how little of a time we have known each other compared to my mom, dad, and Toby, you knew the real me." (tilts her head) "The real Bay."
(She chuckles, but it was clear she was getting a little sad)
Bay: "I love my family to death, don't get me wrong. But, it was just...sometimes I felt they didn't want to get to know the real me." (shrugs) "Not like you did." (smiles) "Which is how I fell in love with you."
(Bay takes a moment to wipe her eyes and sniffles. Watching his true love in tears, he couldn't help the tears that were forming in his eyes, as well)
Bay: "Emmett Bledsoe, I loved you so much. You loved me for me. You never tried to change me when I felt others tried. You accepted me...mood swings and all."
(He stared at her for a minute before looking at her in the eyes and shaking his head)
Emmett: (serious face) "No one is perfect, Bay. No matter how they try to be, everyone has their flaws." (sighs) "Unfortunately for me, you saw mine." (sadly) "And for that, I will never forgive myself for."
(Bay knew what he was talking about. Her unintentionally getting involved with his parents' bitter custody case over him. That caused him to seek solace from the one person Bay didn't expect him to seek comfort from)
Bay: (tearfully) "I will forever be sorry for getting involved in your parent's custody case over you. I hope you believe me when I say I never would've if it wasn't for your mom."
Emmett: (chuckles) "Yeah, she can be quite insistent when she wants to be."
(Emmett gently takes her hands in his and brings them to his lips, kissing them. He then rests her hands on her lap so he can continue signing. He looks at her apologetically)
Emmett: "I know it wasn't your intention on getting in the middle of it. I should've listened better and had more faith and trust in you. I know you were just trying to help. I love my parents, but they need to know when to butt out. My mother put you in a terrible place when she asked you to help her out."
Bay: (chuckles dryly) "Yeah, I was kinda stuck between her and a rock at that point."
Emmett: (sighs) "I should have listened to you instead of immediately blowing up at you."
Bay: (shrugs) "That's okay. I understand why you did it. Like you said, no one is perfect."
(They both look down as they knew what the next part of the conversation needed to be. Did they want to dredge it up? No, but they both knew it was time. They glance up at the other sadly as Emmett begins the devastating conversation)
Emmett: "I will never be able to forgive myself for what I did."
(Bay looks away and is unable to stop the tears from falling. The pain she was feelings in that moment was still as fresh as when she felt it months ago. She desperately tried to stop crying, but it was no use. Emmett sadly closes his eyes and a few tears fall down his cheeks. He would give anything, anything in that moment to take away her pain. It was because of him that she was feeling the sadness. After what felt like hours, but was really only minutes, Bay sighs as she faces her ex)
Bay: "When you told me that you not only cheated on me, but it was with Simone...do you have any idea how much that hurt me?"
(Emmett can't bear to look at her grief stricken eyes so he looks down in shame. He closes his eyes and more tears fall. She signals for him to look up by touching his heart. His puffy eyes causes her to cry more)
Bay: "I have never felt for another guy what I felt for you. I thought I was in love with Ty, but you know how that relationship turned out. What I felt towards you, I never wanted that feeling to go away."
(Emmett knew he had no right to ask his next question, yet he decided to ask it anyway)
Emmett: "Has that feeling gone away? What you feel for me, I mean?"
(She looks at him briefly as she ponders his question. When she is ready to answer, she looks at him)
Bay: "No matter what has happened between us, I will always love you." (tilts her head & sniffles) "Whether or not I could ever forgive you, you have my heart. Emmett, you always have."
Emmett: (smiles a little) "You will always have mine, too, Bay Kennish."
(Bay looks up briefly and closes her eyes before facing him)
Bay: "Why did it have to be Simone you cheated on me with? Out of all the girls at our schools or in the world, why her? Especially given her relationship with Toby?"
Emmett: "I wish I had a good enough reason why it was her. Truth is, when I needed to escape from the pain I felt..."
Bay: "When I went to your mom, you mean."
Emmett: (nods a little) "She happened to be there. It didn't matter at the time that she was with Toby or that she was your friend. In that moment or for a few hours or whatever, I wanted to forget what I was feeling. I think she wanted to escape too, even though I couldn't understand what she was saying as she didn't know how to sign."
(Bay was trying to process everything Emmett was telling her. As much as it killed her to hear it, she was somewhat relieved that he told her the truth. It was obvious they were both experiencing a lot of emotions and pain in that moment. The next question that was on both of their minds was obvious. Where do they go from here? They weren't sure if they knew)
Bay: "I wish I knew what happens next."
Emmett: (hopeful look) "I guess that's the beauty of the situation. It's up to us and us alone." (sighs) "Do you think you could find it in your heart to ever forgive me?"
Bay: (slightly chuckles) "I guess I should be asking you the same thing."
Emmett: (confused) "What do you mean?"
Bay: "When I agreed to help your mom with the custody case even though I knew it was wrong."
Emmett: (shakes his head) "You were just doing what you thought was right." (smiles) "I know that now. No forgiveness is needed. But if it is...then yes, I forgive you."
(Bay briefly smiles and nods in response. Before she speaks, he knew he needed to reassure her of something)
Emmett: (sincerely) "I want you to know something, though, Bay. I am not expecting you to forgive me for what I did. When or even if you are ever ready, I'll be here. I'm not going anywhere."
Bay: (sadly) "I don't know if I have a right to ask you to wait, Emmett."
Emmett: (shakes his head) "You're not asking. I'm offering." (reassured her) "I love you, Bay Madeline Kennish. I'm not going anywhere."
(Bay realized in that moment, that Emmett was sincere in what he said. She loved him. That much was obvious. No matter, what she would always love him. No what she needed to ask herself was if she could get over the betrayal. Back then, she didn't think she could as the betrayal was so fresh. Now, the pain was slowly going away. No matter what she decided in the end, one thing was for sure. She wouldn't let anyone convince her either way. There were some people who felt she should kick Emmett to the curb. Other people felt she should give him another chance. She needed to decide what was right for her. What she didn't know in that moment, was maybe her heart had already made that decision for her. She knew she had a bright future head of her. And what her heart might soon tell her, is that Emmett Bledsoe was part of that future)
