"The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round; the wheels on the bus go round and round, all the do da day!" I belted out, stroking Chow's silky gold fur. Minnie was having a discussion about something super smart-sounding with Alex, who seemed shocked that a six year old would understand the scientific topic they were debating. Carlos and Alec were having a testosterone-filled debate over what the next plausible move would be; Sayaka was gritting her teeth and steering the bus; Axelle was drawing something. I sighed inwardly; no one was paying attention to me.
"We should go to the islands!" I yelped. Everyone paused in their conversations. "Maybe- well, hopefully- the island's won't have been infected." Carlos nodded slowly. "And, even if they are, there are a lot less people there than here." Alec agreed. I smiled to myself. What a smart person I was becoming.
"Twinkies, Twinkies, everyone loves their Twinkies!" My friends resumed their activities, happier now that we had a destination in mind. Chow nuzzled my hand, reminding me that he wanted my attention, and I cheerily sang rhymes over the debates on quantum physics, the attempts to establish dominance, the scratch of pencil on paper, and the grinding of teeth down to nubs.
It was nighttime and Boobs for Brains was curled up with the dog they'd found- Chow, she thought-, Minnie and Alex were leaning against each other with drooping eyelids, Carlos and Alec were having a whisper argument, Axelle was staring thoughtfully out the window, and Sayaka was steering the bus. Boobs for Brains had become a lot less silly in the past few days, proving that this epidemic or apocalypse or whatever was taking a toll on everyone.
Carlos had been in a foul mood since Boobs for Brains blamed their kiss on fan service (although she'd confessed to Lord Bear-ington, which Sayaka overheard her doing, that it really hadn't been that); Alex and Axelle were perpetually fearful that Boobs for Brains was going to totally lose it and kill them all. Their two new additions, Alec and Minnie, seemed nice enough. Minnie was one of those kid genius types, and Alec seemed like the type to stand up for what he believes in.
"Hey, I'll drive; get some sleep." Axelle appeared by Sayaka, her dark eyes watching her intently. "I don't-." Sayaka stopped, shrugged, and stumbled to the back of the bus. She slumped down in the seat behind Boobs for Brains, watching the imbecile carefully as she drifted to sleep. The girl's long blond hair was straight as a board, and her skin was as clear as ever, and her clothes weren't even in as near as bad a disarray as Sayaka's, but she stilled looked different than she had when they'd first met. More mature maybe.
As her eyes shut, Sayaka let herself hope that they'd all make it out of this, even stupid, annoying, rude Boobs for Brains.
"Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream; merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream!" I sang as the boat roared through the water. We were heading to an island not far from the coast, armed with guns the boat's owner kept below decks and a variety of blunt objects, and trying to keep the atmosphere light, even though we all knew what it meant if the island was infected too. And we all knew we'd have nowhere left to run to.
Then everything faded to black...
Sorry that this and the last chapter weren't all that funny... I was trying to move the plot along more than anything...
