Chapter 13
~April 5th, 1962~
Calvin Brown approached the familiar house, on a familiar street, stopping at a familiar door. The familiar home he had grown up in, in what seemed to be another lifetime. He stared at doorway, taking a deep breath. He was rattled beyond what he believe he could handle. Calvin was tempted on turning around and never coming back here again. The brunet promised that he would come to visit though. So, with a shaking hand, he rang the doorbell, awaiting his friends to answer. After a few moments, the door swung open, George Mcfly being revealed to him. The man's face brighten at the sight of him, reaching out for a hug. "Calvin! So glad you could make it!"
Calvin wrapped his arms around his friend, smiling shakily. "Glad I could make it. I love the house!"
"Isn't it great? I'm glad you noticed the ad for it, because we were struggling to find a good place for ourselves." He answered, pulling away to look him in the eyes.
"Well, I was just keeping a look out for you guys, since you were in the market." Calvin stepped inside, becoming further overwhelmed with the sight of his old home. He gulped, realizing it was familiar, yet the furniture inside was completely strange to him. He friend was sure to notice the stillness of the air around him, he thought as he froze in place.
"Calvin? What's wrong?"
He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. He had nearly began crying at the sight, the memories of when he was young flooding his mind. He shook his head, smiling with fake intentions. "Nothing, just thinking about how glad I am that you're finally settled in. How's Lorraine?"
"Oh, she's doing well. She's a almost two months in and kinda crabby today. That's what happens when you're pregnant though." George replied, leading him to the loving room where she was.
"Calvin!" She sat on the couch, hair longer than the last time he had seen it, face beaming with excitement at the sight of him. The television set on, playing something he didn't recognize. He stared at her belly, which was barely noticeable, the beginnings of her pregnancy not even evident to the world yet. "I haven't seen you in a month! How's school?"
"Good, I'm still studying up on the same field that Docs in. I should graduate with my degree in physics in a few months."
"Ohhhh, you going to do some big shot thing with Doc? Or become a teacher? " Lorraine asked innocently, allowing Marty to settle down into the couch with her.
"I don't really know, I'm not too sure." She nodded at that, a hint of worry appearing in her eyes at the words.
"How's, uh...Howard? He...doing alright?" George asked, anxiously. Recently, Howard had broken up with Babs, and had been a mess. They had barely moved in together, when their relationship had fallen apart. She was ready to have children of her own, after they had been dating for years, and Howard...Howard couldn't do it. He had shown up at Doc's mansion a month and a half ago, panicking about becoming a parent. Calvin had been scared when he realized he was drunk, breath hazy with the stink of it. He had never seen Howard drunk before. He knew that Howard's father had always drank too much, that's why he never partaken in it.
"He's...alright. He's still working on cars at the auto repair, but I don't think he's gonna date really anyone anytime soon."
"What about you, hun? Found any cute girls yet? You're not getting any younger." Lorraine teased him.
Calvin found himself breaking out in a cold sweat, though he smiled pleasantly. "I'm alright, Lorraine."
George and Lorraine stared a look that he didn't quite understand. Her hand rubbed gently across his stomach and he looked away. He hadn't seen them in a month. He didn't have it in him to tell them why. Why he had been ignoring their calls and hiding when they came to visit Doc's. Why he didn't want to even look at them until now. George was the one to speak first. "Are you sure? All you do is go to school...I haven't seen you really talk to anyone other than us and Doc."
"I just don't really have time lately. I have to juggle a lot of classes you know...I have to-" Go home back to my own time, my own time, oh my god, I don't belong here. His mind went off in a ramble, fear becoming prevalent in his mind. "-get my degree."
"Well, if you need anything at all, we're here for you."
He smiled, lying through his teeth. "Thank you, but I'm fine."
~January 1st, 1963~
When he went to the local hospital, the same as the one he had tried bringing Howard to all those years ago, he froze at the doorway of her room. The flowers in his hands shook, as Howard pressed him to step inside. George and Lorraine were close to one another, him sitting beside her bed. Doc was already there, having left earlier then them, sitting on the other side of the bed. She cooed at the bundle in her arms, face bright with emotion. His heart thundered dangerously in his chest and he heard Howard whisper distantly into his ear. "It's ok, go look."
His hands shook as he stepped closer. Lorraine looked up, smiling brightly at the visitors. Her smile dimmed a bit, as she noticed his face. He didn't know what he looked like, other then the shadows under his eyes, but he knew that it was bad to be making a face right after someone was born. She spoke softly, as George stared wordily at him. "Calvin...it's alright. This is David."
The flowers were taken from his hand, he wasn't sure by who, and he was guided to the chair that George had previously sat in. Calvin was shaking, breath coming in short gasps. He felt Howard's hand clench his shoulder tightly, him mumbling that it was alright. The baby was handed to him and he stopped moving abruptly. He was stock still, staring down at the bundle in his arms. He saw his older brother, eyes blinking owlishly at him. No, not his older brother, Lorraine's baby was staring at him. David. His godson was staring at him.
Calvin's entire body was shaking, as reached out to the baby's face. David giggled aloud at the touch, grinning toothlessly. Calvin melted at the sight.

When Howard approached in the hallway, he knew what was going to happen right away. He already shielded himself away and was glad he did. Howard stepped close, grabbing his shoulder gently. His glittered with worry, scars sticking out around his right eye. His muscular jaw was working, speaking in a hushed tone. "Are you ok? Do you need to leave?"
Calvin breathed deeply, shaking his head slightly, bowing it down. "N-No, I'm alright...I...David is...Howard, he's not my brother...he's...oh, he's my godson."
"I know he is. I was worried about how you would react, especially after what happened a awhile ago," What he had done to Howard back in March last year. How he had fallen apart in front of his best friend. How had reacted to the news of her pregnancy. How he had screamed. How he had forgotten what had happened after he hidden himself inside his mind. How he ha- "Calvin, what's gonna happen the next time they have a kid? You...scared me. I can't see you fall apart again like that."
"I'll just...go away, so you don't have to deal with me again."
Howard frowned, squeezing tighter. "I don't care about what happens to me; I care about what happens to you."
His head shot up at the words, eyes wide. Howard's mouth gaped openly slightly, seeming almost afraid about what he had said to Calvin. The hand dropped away suddenly, stepping back towards the room. "I'm, uh...going to go talk to Lorraine and George again. They look kinda tired."
His friend left him alone in the hallway, thinking about the look in his eyes, his words drifting around his mind.
~BTTF~
When they had arrived home, Howard has drifted away to his room, having not even looked at him the entire ride home. He didn't understand the words, nor did it seem as though Howard would bring up the conversation, again. Doc turned to Calvin, face curious as they removed their coats. "Are you alright? I thought you were going to...I don't know."
He was getting tired of that question. "I'm fine, Doc. I just nervous. I didn't know what to expect...I didn't even know that I would see any of this."
"I know, but you're very...anxious lately..."
"I'm fine." Though Doc didn't seem convinced.
"I think we should work on the machine again," Doc answered, as they headed to the garage. He shook his head, turning to his companion, who hadn't spoken anything else. "We need to think about the measurements needed, in order to decide how deep the full tank needs to be. I think we're close to finishing the car itself. I just feel it."
Calvin nodded, already at the drawing board to sketch what he remembered, though it was beginning to grow fuzzy in his mind. He gripped the pencil tight, ruler in his left hand, as she detailed the shape from memory, adding in what he believed would better improve the machine. They spent hours discussing the measurements, going over sketches, and trying if they should go for the plutonium fuel or garage fuel route. Calvin had just finished sketching the inside of the the tank, mumbling the calculations he had learned himself during his college years, when Doc returned with lemonade that he had made the pair. "Thanks."
He sipped the drink, placing down his sketching tools to take a break. He realized that Doc was silent as he picked up a wrench, he looked up, curiously asking what was the matter at a moment such as this. His friend opened his mouth once, twice, before shaking his head. "It's nothing."
"No, it's not nothing. Is it about the machine? Please don't tell me I have to wait another six-years to go any further like last time. I didn't go to school for nothing, Doc."
"No, it's not the machine, it's...you."
"Yeah, what about me?"
"Howard told me what happened that night."
Calvin's blood ran cold. "What night?"
He received a pointed look in return. The scientist sighed aloud, before blurting it out. "I know you injured him, that day I had to treat his face. I mean I saw the scratches all over his face and arms. He still has a scars on forehead and cheek. It's never going away, Calvin," He flinched at the words, but Doc continued on, as though he hadn't seen that. "I consider Howard my son, just as I do you, you've hurt him. I also know he said you didn't remember and that worries me greatly."
"Doc, I'm fine. It was an accident. He grabbed at me when I was upset and I just lashed out, and I know they're never going awa-"
"Then why do you act like you didn't do anything? I know Lorraine's pregnancy scared you, scared you to see your brother so young."
"He's my godson, not my brother." Calvin answered angrily.
"And I'm glad you accepted that, but you need to know that if something were to happen to his parents, a court might deep you unfit if they know you're emotionally unstable. You literally scarred your friend and he's never going to look the same again. And he doesn't even care that you did that to him!' Doc's cheeks reddened in anger, as he finished his sentence.
"Of course he cares!" Calvin screamed back at him. "And, all he does is ask me if I'm ok!"
Doc sighed, shaking his head. "You don't even know, do you?"
"What?"
"Calvin, I don't think you understand...Howard would die for you."
"I'm not gonna kill him, if that's what you're thinking."
"I know you wouldn't do it on purpose, Calvin."
"You're seriously saying that I would even kill him!"
"You already are killing him!" Doc bellowed, throwing down his wrench. It clattered to the ground, Calvin flinching, sound echoing in the garage. For a moment there was only the sound of the pair panting. The scientist finally spoke, sounding weary."He's losing sleep over what's happening to you. You've been working nonstop and have no goals in your life, other than this stupid machine. I never thought I would say this, but I think you should give up on going back home."
Calvin threw down his empty cup, letting it shatter, standing up abruptly. "You wouldn't understand this at all, you bastard! I'm trying to go back to where I belong!"
"Well, maybe you belong here!" Calvin stared at him in surprise and Doc lowered his voice. "You're my friend, Calvin. I don't think I can imagine a world where you don't exist."
The brunet looked away from him, staring at the drawings scattered across the desk."I'll be born soon, so pretty soon I will exist."
"I'm talking about Calvin. When Martin is born, he won't even compare to my oldest friend. And I know for a fact that Howard would feel the exact same way about it. If you left, it wouldn't be the same for either of us."
Calvin's hands shook, as he stepped away, shoes having pieces of glass embed itself. He shook his head at the words, the door swinging open. He turned around, hissing at him. "You wouldn't understand, because you're not even my Doc."
~January 5th~
Lorraine had been sleeping, in the bedroom, George having gone to work on his book in the study for the day. Calvin had gone to visit once more, mostly to see the newborn baby. He held David tight to him, watching him drink the milk from his bottle that he held. His voice shook, fear evident in his voice, as he whispered. "I don't think I can stay here, with you...I'm a stranger here. I need to go back home."
The dark circles under his eyes were noticeable even from a distance. He worked on the DeLorean endlessly, even staying up long after Doc had gone to sleep each night. He couldn't get it right and Doc didn't knew what he was supposed to do. It was all theoretical by this point. Tears pooled in his eyes and dropped onto the baby's face. "Things would be different though...I'm 24-years-old already...it's already too late."
By the time he had returned home that, it was already too late. The mansion was a pile of ashes and broken timber. The fire department was there, using their hose to put out the burning remains. Doc and Howard were covered in ash, being checked over by the medics that had arrived at the scene. Calvin paled at the sight immediately sprinting to the pair. Howard looked up, face pale underneath the black streaks. He reached forward, pulling him into a hug. "Oh, thank god you're alright."
"Yes, I smelled something, and the alarm was going off, so we were able to escape in time. I don't even know how it started," Doc answered, as he had one of his burnt hands wrapped, couching slightly. Calvin wrapped his arms around his shoulders, as Doc accepted the brunet's fearful apologies about what he had said earlier. "We're alright..."
Calvin turned around, spotting a small gathering of town citizens, staring on in confusion at the Brown estate. He didn't think he's ever seen this many people at once near Doc's mansion and it was a strange sight for him. He was going to reply back to Doc, when he saw the three adults lingering in the back of the crowd, familiar to his eye. Howard's-Biff's-old friends snickered and pointed at them. He knew right away how the fire had started and he felt his vision go red at the idea of them starting it. He rushed towards the crowd, shouting at them. "I know what you did!"
The crowd startled, people beginning to back away as he approached, as Match, Skinhead, and 3-D attemped to run. He ignored Doc's calls to return, instead chasing after the one closet to him, as the crowd broke itself up. One of his old friends cursed, looking over his shoulder to see Calvin sprinting full force at him. He tackled the one nearest him, the pair crumbling to the street, scratching up one of Calvin's elbows. He was straddling him by thus point, punching him across the cheek as hard as he could. He could hear one of the firefighters bellowing at him to stop. The other two made a run for it, leaving behind their friend to be beaten. Calvin only got in a few hits, before he was pulled off. The man wiped at the dribble leaking from his nose, spitting out blood in his mouth. "You're crazy!"
"You tried to murder them!" Calvin screamed back, neck straining in protest at the words exploded from his throat. Howard was holding him back, the firefighters helping the man up. "You burned his house!"
"You broke my nose! I'm gonna sue you, you god damned psycho!" The man yelled back, the firefighters informing him that a police officer was heading here already due to the incident.
Doc was in-between the two groups, attempting to placate the man. "I'm sure this all just a misunderstanding, Mr. Caldwell. I don't believe you would burn down my mansion now, would you?"
Biff's old friend-Caldwell- didn't answer the question, mouth shutting immediately. Calvin knew that was an admission, but such evidence was speculation at best to a court. Doc was staring at him intently and he knew the scientist suspected the same. What Calvin had done had witnesses to back up that he had been beaten for 'no reason'. Calvin was screwed. This wouldn't end good for him at all. What he didn't suspect was Howard letting go of him, stepping forward. "Match, let's not make this bigger for no reason. Go home."
Match Caldwell stared at him back, sitting up slowly. "He tried to beat me into a pulp, why should I?"
"Because, I know at least five different things that could get you arrested."
The man seemed to think it over, before brushing the firefighter off of him. "You wouldn't."
"Doc and Calvin are very close to me. Just go home."
Match looked around, seeing flashing police lights in the distance. He snorted, leaving the streets before they would arrive. He didn't give Howard Tannen another glance, their friendship apparently meaningless by this point in their lives. As the police arrived, the firefighters stepped over to speak to the law enforcement. The police eyed Calvin, as though they were deciding what to do, but made no movement towards them. Calvin stepped towards Doc, face angry. "Why would you just let them get away like that? They burned down your mansion and almost killed you in the process!"
"Because, there's no evidence that suggests it, Calvin. It would have all burned to ash. I thought you would have been smart enough to realize that, but apparently not. And now I have to prevent the police from making an arrest and charging with assault." Doc didn't even bother to wait for an answer, heading over to the group of police officers to speak to them.
"Can you believe that? He's acting like I did something wrong!"
Howard scoffed. "You're kidding me, right? You having a fucking godson, you idiot! What're you going to do if you get arrested and can't see him anymore, huh?'
Calvin appeared surprised by the words, as his friend continued to grow angry. "I can't believe you would do something so stupid! In front of so many people! You should be lucky that I know what people like Match have done, otherwise you would been screwed."Howard, he tried to kill you guys! I can't understand why you're even angry!"
"Because we love you! Doc, Lorraine, George, we all love you! If you get arrested, you can't work on your time machine, you can't see David, you can't live with us, I can't be with my best friend, I can't stand the idea of you being in there, all alone, I can't take of the idea of not being able to...able to..." Howard had trailed off, coughing dryly, before turning away.
"Before what?" He was holding his breath, waiting for him to continue.
He never got the chance to finish, before Doc approached the pair, shaking his head. "I got them to leave what you've done alone. The police will be investigation what happened here, since there is evidence of arson, but they have no guarantees. You should be lucky that they remember my teaching days at the university, instead of the crazy rumors about me a few years back. Otherwise I would not have a chance at getting them to leave it alone. Calvin, I'm extremely disappointed that you couldn't even control yourself though."
The brunet glanced at Howard, sighing, before looking back at Doc. "I know, Doc. That was stupid and I need...I need help. I'm not fine...I'm..."
Doc nodded, seeming to calm slightly. "I know you're not. If you need to see someone, that might be best to look into that sooner rather than later. Hospitals are finally getting around to treating people with emotional issues fairly, so you shouldn't have to worry about that if you go look for help. We can look into that at a later time though. I think we all deserve to rest after what's happened today. I believe we should head back to the garage. There's some sleeping bags stored away somewhere in there..."
They had followed the scientist back into the remaining building on his property, digging into one of the store closets near the doorway. Doc had excused himself to the bathroom, mumbling about how they were lucky that there was even one in this building. After searching in silence, they located a box of older clothes, pulling them out as well. Howard opened the box, pulling a long-sleeve button-up out. Calvin continued to search, he removed his shirt with a grimace of pain. The brunet looked up on this, seeing a a bruise blooming on his chest, from Calvin elbowing him in the chest. He didn't realize that he knew until then, but once again he had injured his friend. "I'm...sorry."
Howard stared at him, barely having his arms into the shirt sleeves, a royal blue like his eyes. His shirt remained unbuttoned, the bruising nearly as dark as the hue on his clothes. He looked away, bitter look in his eyes. "I know you are."
He pulled out the tote full of camping gear, popping open the lid to find the sleeping bags, sighing to himself. "I don't think you would understand this, but I...I don't belong here..."
The sleeping bags were pulled out, only two of them unfortunately, before he snapped the lid back shut. He looked up once more, only to realize that he had stepped closer to Calvin, hovering above him. The brunet stood and faced the former bully. He didn't realize that his eyes had welled with tears, until it was too late. A tear or two slipped down his cheek, he had realized in embarrassment. He knew Doc's house was going to burn down and he still couldn't do anything to stop it. His hands shook, the sleeping bag slipping from his grip. Howard reached out to him, pulling him into a hug. Calvin cursed aloud at the comfort and sobbed into his chest, not knowing what else to do. The former bully held the sides of his face, pulling his gaze look in his eyes wasn't like anything he had seen someone look at before. When he pressed a gentle kiss to his lips, Calvin calmed his crys. He didn't know why, but this felt right. While everything else was confusing, this was what he knew was right.
When Howard pulled away from him, dropping his hands as if he had been burned, he knew something was wrong. He opened his eyes, staring into the fearful ones before him. His voice shook, appearing to be as nervous as Calvin had been. "I-I should of not have done that."
"Why not?" He asked softly, voice trembling.
"T-That's not what we're supposed to do."
Behind the wall separating the bathroom from the main garage, Doc Brown stood frozen. His mouth gaped opened slightly, fear evident in his face. He squeezed his eyes shut, attempting to have this bad dream wash away from his memory. He couldn't pretend he hadn't seen what had happened though and he knew that even if he tried to protect them, the truth would get out. It always does, no matter how one tries. He whispered to himself. "Oh, Calvin, you don't know what you two have done."
Chapter 13 End
If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all! I'm not forcing you to read this chapter. When I started to write this chapter out, I wasn't intending on this ending. I read over the chapters that I written prior to this one and realized I had set up this sequence without even knowing it. I also unintentionally wrote this out, replicating their friendship to a similar one that I've had with an old friend, one that didn't even know that I had a crush on her and how I wanted our relationship to play out. I don't ship Marty McFly and Biff Tannen by any means. Those two characters are probably not even gay. But, this story is supposed to be the pair becoming someone they're not. They're not Marty Mcfly and Biff Tannen. They're Calvin Brown and Howard Tannen from Funny How Time Flies. I can tell you right now, that this will stay at a teen rating though. I wouldn't be delving further than kissing, since this isn't even important to the plot or what was originally intended. I will however had no regrets doing this, as I was already making their relationship seem more than friends in previous chapters. I will also tell you that there's about two or three chapters left in this story. I wasn't planning on writing this story for over three and a half years. Just like Calvin and Howard's relationship though, things have a way of growing on their own. I'll try updating as soon as I can.
