Chapter 13: Rock the World (Part 2)
(Melissa's POV)
I've been preparing for this since I arrived in Sinnoh.
To fight Roark, the first Gym Leader in Sinnoh.
To fight a good fight.
To show the world what my Pokémon can do.
And maybe show off a bit.
Right now, I was in the waiting room waiting for Roark to heal up his Pokémon after Dylan's battle. I took a few deep breaths as I mentally prepared for my match against Roark. I know I can do this. I can beat him. But, now that I thought about it, there was always a bit of doubt in my mind. What if I lose? What if my knowledge isn't enough? Am I only a true Pokémon Trainer when I have a DS in my hands? I don't know, but all I know is that if I don't try then I won't find out, "Charmander!" I quickly snap out of my thoughts when I heard my Starter call out for me, "Char char mander?"
"I'm fine, Pyra." I replied as I stood up and got out Ave & Mew, "Alright guys, how are you feeling?" Pyra had a fire in her eyes saying that she was ready as the flame on her tail started to burn brightly. Ave flew around me and landed on my shoulder before nodding,
'I'm ready for anything, Aura Guardian!' Mew said as she saluted. I got Mew to float up to my face,
"Mew, this is your first battle. I mean, the first time you've battled ever against another Pokémon. I'm not even sure I'm gonna send you out." I told her truthfully,
'Oh, c'mon Melissa! I'm not a baby.' Mew then puffed out her cheeks as she looked away, causing me to giggle, 'I can handle Rocks.'
"That's because all I did was make you lift rocks with Psychic." I reminded her, "But if it makes you feel any better, I'll try and get you out as soon as I can while I let Pyra sit this one out. She's the highest level out of all of you and I wanna level you & Ave up." I looked at Pyra just in case she heard that. She did, and only huffed out a bit of smoke in response,
'Thanks.' Mew said with a smile. I got her to sit down with my team on the ground as I cleared my throat and started my speech,
"Well, um… I'm not that great at speeches so let's get out there and kick some ass!" I shouted out with as much energy as I could put in. It was silent as I let the entire thing float in the air for a while. Ave started clapping with his wings before he saw everyone not doing the same so he slowly stopped, "Dylan's better at this type of thing."
'Let's just do this. I sense that Roark's done.' Mew told me. I sent my team back into their Pokéballs as I left the waiting room and onto the battlefield. I saw Roark on the other end with a small grin on his face. I have a feeling it was going to be fun battle,
"You've got it Melissa!" Dylan called out from the stands as his Pokémon cheered along with Dawn's, who was spelling out my name in cheer. I just chuckled before I looked at Roark with a determined face,
"Let's see if you've got what it takes to be a Pokémon Trainer." Roark told me,
"Don't worry Roark, I'll show ya what I've got. I'm gonna rock your world!" Just as I said that, the referee came out,
"Are both competitors ready!?" The ref called out. We both nod without taking our eyes off each other, "Okay! This will be a 3-on-3 match between Gym Leader Roark & Challenger Melissa Jacobs of Kalos! Only one item is allowed for both Trainers and no substitutions! First one to run out of usable Pokémon loses! Do I make myself clear!?" Me & and the Rock-type Gym Leader nod again, "3! 2! 1!" He then looked at us both just in case one of us were holding onto our Pokéballs, "GO!"
-Gym Battle-
-Melissa vs Roark-
"Geodude, I need your assistance!" Roark shouted as he threw out Geodude. I knew which Pokémon I wanted to throw out there. I could probably win with just one but I wanted style points,
"Easy." I mutter as I grab my Starly, "Ave! You're on!"
"Starly!" My Pokémon called out as he readied himself. He looked at me and waited for a command,
"Let's kick it off with Peck!" I shouted. Ave started flying at high speeds as he charged at Geodude,
"Geodude! Defense Curl!" Roark commanded. I knew this was coming. Ave's Peck didn't do as much damage as I would like and he bounced off Geodude but I have a few tricks up my sleeve,
"Ave, Agility and Aerial Ace NOW!" Ave nodded and used Agility to close the distance between Geodude and him and transitioned into Aerial Ace as he got close. Roark shouted at Geodude to use Rollout to get out of there but it was too late as my attack hit, causing some major damage, "Oh yeah! Whirlwind Geodude now!" I smirked as I saw Geodude up in the air now, trapped in a tornado, "And now, finish it off with Aerial Ace!" Ave then proceeded to fly above Geodude, make his beak longer and flew downwards towards Geodude and slammed him down to the ground,
"Geodude!" Roark called out as the dust kicked up covered the field. When the dust settled, all we could see was a dirty Starly and fainted Geodude,
"Geodude is unable to battle! The battle goes to Ave the Starly!" The ref called out. Me & Ave cheered a little as Ave went back to my side. I looked at the TV screen and saw Ave had gotten some damage but it wasn't anything worrying,
"Ave, you think you can go another round?" I asked my Bird Pokémon. He only nodded in response, "Sweet. Alright Roark! Who's next!?"
(Dylan's POV)
"Ave beat Geodude faster than me." Bella muttered as she looked down a bit sadly,
"That's kinda my fault." I say, trying to cheer her up, "I should've learnt the Type Advantages and I should've sent out Ollie first. You did your best though. I'm proud of you."
"But I want to be stronger." She told me, "I need to be stronger to help you with your dream."
"Bella, you're already strong. That Brine was amazing. And I did overexert you guys. I'm sorry for pushing you too hard."
"Don't worry. We'll get better with every battle and we'll gain more experience, right?" Sparkle said with a smile, "You teach me and I teach you." I held back a laugh before telling everyone that we're gonna get better as time goes on, but right now we had to support my best friend. Ave was going to go against Onix, one of the larger Pokémon in the universe,
"You think Ave will take Onix down?" Dawn asked me as Roark called out Onix. I just pointed towards the battle to answer her question.
(Melissa's POV)
"Onix, use Iron Tail and destroy the ground underneath the Starly!" Roark shouted. I quickly got Ave to fly out of there before I got him to use Aerial Ace on Onix's face, "Onix, Growl with all you've got!" Huh? Lowering Ave's Attack? Like that'll d-OH CRAP!
"AVE!" I shouted as Ave was blow back to the ground and skidded to my feet. Thanks to all the rocks, Ave didn't have a pleasant trip back to me, "Ave, you alright?" He responded by slowly getting up and breathing heavily. I looked at Ave's health and it was not good. He was in the red now. I quickly used my Potion to heal him back up,
"Hey, if you're using Potions than I'll use this!" Roark called out as he held up what looked like a red salt shaker. He popped open the lid and threw the dust at Onix, who's eyes widened. I looked at the screen and gasped when I saw Onix's Attack went up by one level. This can't be good,
"The Challenger has used her Potion and the Gym Leader has used X Attack! Both Trainers are now not allowed to use anymore items!" Crap, I forgot about the Battle Items! I didn't really see any point in using them but now I kinda wish had some on me. This gonna be rough,
"Okay, Ave. I want you to keep your distance and confuse Onix. Then on my cue, deal as many Wing Attacks you can deal, got it?" Ave nodded before flying away and flew circles around the massive Rock-type. Now all I need was the right moment,
"Onix! Tail Whip!" Oh, I am not falling for this again,
"Ave! DODGE IT!" I yelled as Onix whipped his tail at my Starly, "Now! Wing Attack!" Ave then flew over to Onix's head and started spamming Wing Attack. I was almost too late to get Ave out of there when I heard Roark command Onix to Bite Ave's tail feathers off. He did and dealt some damage, just enough for Ave to go in the red again, so was Onix but I don't think Ave can take him head on right now. Crap! I need to finish off this fight now! What can I do!? Crap, crap, crap, crap…
'Melissa, let Ave faint and send me out to take down Onix. He's weak enough for me to take him down and I can deal with Cranidos.' I heard Mew say in my head. Letting my Pokémon faint on purpose!? I know Ave's too weak to last against Onix & Cranidos but Mew is my best Pokémon right now, 'Remember, I'm a "Gardevior".'
"Screw it." I muttered, 'I may as well let Ave go down fighting.' I thought, "Ave, PECK!" Ave looked at me skeptically before nodding and taking off. Suddenly, I saw Ave spinning as his beak got longer as he sped towards Onix. I instantly knew what move it was, "DRILL PECK!" I shouted as Ave drove his beak into Onix's stomach(?) and got the last of his health down to zero, "YES!" I cheered before realizing something, "Crap, AVE!" I shouted as Onix fainted on top of my Starly. I winced as the dust settled and saw that Ave was no longer conscious, "Aw nuts."
"Both Pokémon are unable to battle! This battle is a draw!" The referee called out,
"Oh c'mon! You gave the win to Onix when Bella fainted and he wasn't on the field yet!" Dylan shouted before getting pulled back by Dawn,
"Dylan, Bella fainted before Onix could be sent out. Onix technically defeated Ave because he landed on him." Dawn told her 'brother'. He sighed and nodded before calling out,
"You better make this last battle epic!"
"I plan to!" I called back before I turned my gaze at Roark,
"Well, this has been a fun battle Melissa. I can truly see your potential as a Trainer. But I think it's time to put this to an end." Roark said as he pulled out his last Pokéball,
"I couldn't have agreed more." I say as I pull out my surprise, 'Let's hope this works Mew.'
'It will.' Mew said with pure confidence in her voice. I smirked as I gave Mew's Pokéball a little toss before I threw it out at the same time as Roark,
"I need your assistance, Cranidos!"
"Time to meet your maker! Beat this dinosaur down, MEW!"
In flashes of light, our Pokémon appeared onto the battlefield. I saw a pink aura over Roark's and the ref's heads as Mew started to modify their memories and make it seem like Roark was battling another Psychic-type Pokémon. However, like Dylan told me, Dawn was… well, she fainted. Piplup & Mimi were too much in shock to notice, Pawa was doing her best to wake up her Trainer and Dylan & his team was holding Sparkle back before she could hug Mew, 'Melissa, protect me.' Mew begged as she used her cutest face,
"I'll fend her off with Aura Spheres if she gets too close." I whispered before wincing as I heard Sparkle trying to shock her way out. It was a wonder how Dylan was still holding on to her while hundreds of volts flowed through his body,
"A Gardevior. We don't really see those in Sinnoh." Roark commented. Just then, Pawa shocked Dawn awake with Discharge,
"WHAT!?" Dawn shouted out, her hair standing up completely straight. I had to hold back a laugh at how ridiculous it looked,
"MIMI, DO YOU MIND ICE BEAMING SPARKS!?" Dylan shouted while being zapped. I quick Ice Beam later, Dylan grabbed Bella and told her to use Water Gun on Dawn,
"Thanks." Dawn said tonelessly, her hair now back to normal and her clothes completely drenched,
"No problem." Dylan replied happily, ignoring his Starter's chanting. Sparks was probably chanting about letting her go or something but right now I needed to focus,
"How did she get a freaking legendary Pokémon!?" Dawn exclaimed,
"We'll tell you later. Just watch the battle." Dylan answered. Alright, showtime,
"Cranidos, Headbutt!" Roark yelled out. I saw this coming as soon I saw Dylan's battle so this should be a piece of cake,
"Mew, Reflect!"
'On it boss!' Mew told me as she put a shield around herself just as Cranidos got her. It bounced off her shield and was now dazed and open for attack,
"Now hit it with its own medicine! Counter with Transform and Headbutt the hell out of Cranidos!" I shouted. Mew nodded and broke out of her shield before transforming into Cranidos and hitting it with everything she has before transforming back,
'Okay, that hurt a little.' Mew said as she rubbed her forehead before she glared at Cranidos, who only glared back,
"Focus Energy & Take Down, now!" Roark commanded. Okay, I have no idea how he's not responding to a transforming Gardevior but now I just think he's on auto pilot,
"Mew, Agility to dodge then Mega Punch!" I called out. Mew quickly disappeared in a flash before appearing behind the dinosaur and used her cute little paw to send it straight across the battlefield. Cranidos landed on its feet as it started to breath heavily. I looked at the screen and saw that it was in the red now. Time to finish it off, "Okay Mew, us-"
'Melissa, look now!' Huh? I looked at Cranidos again and saw it was starting to glow. I quickly called Mew back to my side as Cranidos started to change shape and evolve, 'Do have a plan?'
'Not really!' I replied in my thought as the light faded, revealing a very intimidating Rampardos. And it was bad for me since Cranidos only evolved at Level 30! Crap, what am I supposed to do now!? Okay, stay calm, you can do this Melissa. Just… focus,
"Cranidos evolved!" Roark exclaimed while Dawn pulled out her Pokédex,
"Rampardos, the Headbutt Pokémon. Its skull is as hard as iron. It is a brute that tears down jungle trees while catching its prey." Dawn's Dex said,
"You think you can do it Mew?" I asked my pink Pokémon, who only nodded in response, "Alright, bring it on! Mew! Psychic, now!"
"Rampardos! Pursuit now!" Roark called out,
"Crap! Dodge it!" I shouted but was too late as Mew got hit with the attack. I winced as I heard Mew's yells of pain as I saw her health get reduced to half, "Mew, you alright!?"
'Do I look like it!?' Mew shouted back at me before focusing back to the battle, 'Ugh… that really hurt.'
"Don't worry, just hold on while I think!" I said before observing my situation. Well, there were rocks, and then there was dirt. That was something but nothing I can work with. Then I realized something. Roark was probably going to use as many Headbutts he could use so… 'Got it, leave yourself in the open. Wait for me to tell you your next move.' I thought to Mew, not wanting to ruin the surprise. Mew nodded, although reluctantly, and stopped floating,
"She's in the open! Use Zen Headbutt!" Rampardos roared as it charged at the Legendary,
'Alright, I'm ready!' Mew called out as the Headbutt Pokémon charged at her, 'Anytime you're ready!' I still kept quiet, even if I did hear the worry in her voice, 'Its getting closer!' She shouted as she started to step away,
'Wait for it…' I told her as Rampardos was only 20 feet away, then 15, 10, 5, 'NOW!'
"Psychic and use the rocks around to make a wall!" Mew didn't need to be ask twice as she quickly made a wall of stone, which Rampardos gladly used its head to bust through. Luckily, Mew's Psychic kept it together, trapping the dinosaur's head in the rock. When I saw that my plan was working, I just shouted the first move that came to my mind, "IRON TAIL! IRON TAIL! IRON TAIL!" Mew nodded before she made her tail glow as she did a quick Iron Tail combo on Rampardos' face, with the last hit sending Rampardos back,
"Rampardos, are you okay!?" Roark asked. Rampardos only grunted in response, "I'll take that as a yes. Okay, Assurance! Now!" I didn't bother getting Mew to dodge it. She was too tired from all those Iron Tails and decided to take the hit. Too bad she was badly in the red now,
"No!" I exclaimed. I really needed to finish the fight now or else I'm completely screwed,
"Rampardos, finish her off with a Head Smash!" Yep, definitely screwed now unless I do something,
"Mew, Flash now!" I called out quickly as Rampardos charged with all its might at her. Suddenly, the whole field was covered in a white light, blinding everyone here. This might be a risky move and it could either make me lose or win but I had to do it,
"Mew, AURA SPHERE!" Suddenly, we heard a boom as dust and rocks went everywhere. I had to cover my eyes to stop myself from getting blind and I knew Dylan had used his body to shield Dawn & the Pokémon from the light show. When everything faded and the dust settled, all we saw on the field was a knocked-out Rampardos & Mew, barely hanging on to consciousness with only 1HP left,
"Rampardos is unable to battle! Gardevior is the winner! The match goes to Challenger Melissa Jacobs of Kalos!" The ref called out. It was official.
I won my first Gym Badge.
"Well, congratulations Melissa." Roark said as he walked up to me, "That was a very fun battle and I can definitely see you facing against the Elite Four. Heck, even Cynthia herself! You make a great Trainer, Miss Jacobs." I kinda blushed at that part before he showed me my badge in the mining chest, "As commemoration for beating me and a reward for coming this far, I award your first Gym Badge! The Coal Badge! Be proud to have this as your first of many Badges you'll collect!" I got and I got out my Pokémon for the good old classic victory pose. I held up to the air and shouted to the heavens,
"OH YEAH! ONE MORE STEP TOWARDS TRUE VICTORY! THE COAL BADGE!" I twirled around before holding back into the air, "IT'S FINALLY MINE!"
"Way to go, Melissa!" Dylan called out as he ran up to me, "We both have our Badges now! We can move on!"
"I still want to know why you have a Mew." Dawn spoke up,
"We'll tell you on the way to…" I trailed off as I glanced at my best friend,
"Well, if I remember correctly, we have to go to Eterna City next." Dylan muttered, "I think a Pokémon Contest is being held along the way."
"Yeah, at Floaroma Town which will be held in a few weeks or so." Dawn added in,
"Sweet, we knock out another Contest before our next Gym Battle, check out the situation at Eterna before we plan our next move." Dylan said,
"You're still thinking Team Galactic will do something that'll endanger the region?" Dawn asked with a raised eyebrow,
"I met someone else who's with me on it." Dylan said a little cryptically before yawning, "We better get to a Pokémon Centre though. It's starting to get late."
"I wanna know who it is." I say, but he just shook his head,
"Too tired. Maybe tomorrow." He said before leaving the Gym. Me & Dawn looked at each other before shrugging and following his lead and saying our good-byes to Roark. When we caught up to him, we saw him just looking up at the starry sky and sighing,
"I miss home." We heard him say,
"I miss home too, Dylan." Dawn said as she looked up at the sky as well,
"Yeah, me too. I miss my family." I say as I follow everyone's lead,
"But I love travelling with you guys." Dylan said as he looked at us, "…Hey, why don't we just… take a break after all this?"
"Huh?" Was my response,
"You know, no Gym Battles, Contests, anything. Just us, our Pokémon and the road for an entire year." He suggested to us happily, "What do you say about that." I did have to admit, that sounded kinda nice. Even though we just started, I want to have fun and a year long vacation sounded something we would need after this,
"Sounds fun." I tell him,
"That sounds like a perfect way to help fill the Pokédex." Dawn said,
"Then it's settled." Dylan said as he looked up, "After the Sinnoh League and everything, we'll take a vacation."
"Which region, by the way?" Dawn asked,
"Unova."
"Kalos." Me & Dylan say at the same time before looking at each other,
"Kalos is beautiful with amazing sights and sounds." I growl out,
"Unova has almost every kind of Pokémon around the world." He retorted,
"We have rollerblades and the freaking Eiffel Tower for a Gym!"
"Unova has Black City & White Forest and the Castelia Cone!"
"Ice cream is for the weak!"
"At least Black & White's games don't have a game breaking glitch!"
"What are you two arguing about?" Dawn spoke up,
"Shut up Dawn!" We shout at her as we glared holes into each other's eyes. *Sigh* I guess things haven't really changed much. From Earth to the Pokémon world, we'll pretty much argue about any dumb topic. But I guess it can't be helped. Anyway, despite everything, I'm gonna enjoy every single minute I have here.
And maybe becoming Champ will make the memories more precious.
Save Game… Quit!
Whew! Done! Not doing React Watch Believe Yikes for a while but that might change. Anyway, see you guys later!
