Cats/Clans © Me

What a failure of a cat! You're a pathetic, sorry excuse for a cat!

Spiritwalker sighed and rolled onto his flank and stared at the rocky ceiling. He was laying in what used to be the Clan leader's den in the abandoned FrostClan camp, mourning over how pathetic his mission was.

Where did I go wrong? Spiritwalker mused. StarClan told me to bring them the leaders of the Clans…Spiritwalker thought back to that fateful night two sunrises ago.

"You six are the least worthy!" Galestar snarled. He turned his frigid gaze on Spiritwalker. "Spiritwalker, we asked of you to bring us the true leaders of the five Clans and you brought us kittypets?"

What did he mean by that? True leaders…does that mean they weren't the true leaders of the Clans? It only seemed logical since they were leaders in the first place. But now…thanks to my stupidity, five cats are dead.

Where did I go wrong?

"Spiritwalker?" a voice called from outside the den and Spiritwalker's ears shot up.

Is it Pepperfeet? He had obeyed Pepperfeet's wishes when she said that she never wanted to see him again. He even went as far as not to show up in the loner's camp. He hate to admit it, but he missed his travel companion.

"Spiritwalker?" the voice called once more.

"I told you he's not here," another annoyed voice sourly replied.

"Well…this seemed like the place that he'd hide." There was a pause. "Do you…think he left without saying good-bye? I thought he liked us."

"Of course he does!" The other cat insisted. "He tried to make us a Clan again! It wasn't his fault that the leaders died, no matter how many times Pepperfeet insists."

She still blames me! Not that I wasn't surprised…

"Oh, well, I guess he's not here," the first cat somberly noted. "I guess we should try some other place…"

"Peaches, Piper?" Spiritwalker called as he exited the den. The two young toms quickly jumped around in surprise.

"Spiritwalker, it's really you!" Peaches gleefully cried. "The whole group thought that you left!"

"I can't really go anywhere," Spiritwalker replied. "It's good to see you two again. Why did you try to find me?"

"We still want to become warriors!" Piper replied, sounding just as excited as Peaches. "It sounds tempting the way you talked about it. Our group may not be a Clan, but that doesn't mean that we can't become warriors!"

"Will you please teach us how to become warriors?" Peaches begged. "We want to learn how to hunt and fight like a true wild cat!"

"Please?" Piper whined.

Spiritwalker snorted in amusement. These are the type of cats that a Clan really needs. I suppose one move or two wouldn't hurt.

"Very well," the StarClan tom agreed. "I'll teach you a defensive move that I learned on my first day as an apprentice." He crouched down with his tail tucked. "It's called the Duck and Twist." Spiritwalker quickly ducked and rolled to his right and quickly got back on his paws. "It's often added with a quick frontal attack. You try."

Piper and Peaches immediately got into crouches, their eyes lit up with eagerness.

"Tuck your tails in," Spiritwalker instructed as he inspected their crouch. "That way it won't get crushed or snagged by an opponent. Peaches, bring your paws underneath you; you're swatting like a duck."

"Tee-hee," Piper smirked as Peaches shot him a dirty look and adjusted his crouch.

"Better," Spiritwalker informed. "Now, rolled to the left!"

"Which left?" Piper interrupted. "Our left or your left?"

Peaches, on the other paw, was already rolling to his left and barreled into Piper, who hadn't moved yet. There was a slight scuffle but it was quickly settled by Peaches.

"Did I do it correctly, Spiritwalker?" Peaches eagerly asked and dug his paws into the struggling form of Piper underneath.

"I…suppose," Spiritwalker purred.

Piper huffed and flailed under his friend. "Peaches, get your fat hind off of me!" he snarled.

Peaches smugly leapt off Piper and dashed behind Spiritwalker. Meanwhile, the unhappy golden tabby tom spat out dirt and shakily got to his paws.

"You're lucky that I didn't shred you," Piper threatened as Peaches peered out from behind Spiritwalker with a giggle. "When I become a warrior, you wouldn't stand a chance against me! I'll tear your pelt from your skin!"

Piper crouched down as if he were to carry out his threat. Peaches gasped and Spiritwalker decided that it was his time to intervene.

"You can't just go around shredding your friends, Piper," Spiritwalker chided as he placed a paw on Piper's tail. The young tabby tom leapt, but fell flat on his belly. "The warrior code says that you don't have to kill your enemy to win a battle."

"You've mentioned that before," Peaches replied. "What is it?"

"The warrior code is a list of laws that every cat must follow when living in a Clan," Spiritwalker explained. "It's what separates us from rogues and loners; we have the warrior code to guide us and it sets a limit to what we can and cannot do. Rogues and loners, however, do not have anything to guide them."

"Could you tell us some laws?" Piper asked from his position on the ground.

"Well, one code says that a kit must be 6 moons old to be an apprentice," Spiritwalker explained. "And another one says that you may not hunt or trespass on another Clan's territory."

"How many are there?" Peaches asked.

"Sixteen," Spiritwalker meowed.

"And you have to memorize all of them?"

Spiritwalker nodded. "It's part of every cat's training. You can't be a Clan cat without knowing the warrior code."

"I want to be a Clan cat!" Peaches excitedly replied. "Could you teach us the warrior code?"

"Perhaps some other time," Spiritwalker sadly mewed. "Shouldn't your friends be looking for you?"

"Oh, yeah, we were supposed to hunt, but I guess we got carried away trying to find you," Peaches reported nonchalantly. "Can we come tomorrow around sunhigh and train again? It's fun!"

"When you're not lying in the dirt!" Piper growled.

Spiritwalker lifted his paw and Piper shot forward and barreled into Peaches. "Now I can…playfully…get payback!"

As the two denmates scuffled about, Spiritwalker returned to his thoughts.

Their enthusiasm for learning about the Clan ways is truly breathtaking, Spiritwalker mused as he watched Peaches use the Duck and Twist technique against Piper. With some training they'll turn into fine warriors. It's a shame that there won't be a Clan for them to use their talents in. He fiercely shook his head fur in disbelief. What am I saying? If this sort of training works with Piper and Peaches, who's to say that they wouldn't work with the other cats? Perhaps this is what they needed; a taste of what they could become!

"Hey Peaches, Piper!" Spiritwalker called, breaking up the play-fight. "I've been thinking; how about we gather some other cats and bring them here and train? Perhaps we could convince some other cats to form a Clan."

"That's sounds like fun!" Peaches chirped.

"We'll help you spread the word," Piper firmly stated.

"Great," Spiritwalker purred. "Tell the other groups to send a few cats to the old FrostClan camp around sunhigh in two sunrises. We'll train and learn more about the warrior code."

And I can hopefully scout potential leaders.

"You got it!" Piper meowed.

"See you in two sunrises, Spiritwalker!" Peaches happily cheered as he and Piper headed out of the camp.

"Thanks for the lesson!" Piper thanked before they disappeared into the undergrowth.

"Alright, StarClan," Spiritwalker meowed to himself once the two were out of earshot. "I'll give your mission a second chance. It's time to amend these cats for the better."
