The Doctor stepped back towards the TARDIS, turning his head away from the planet he had supposedly saved. It had gotten so dark in his head that it made him worry if he had saved them all. Or perhaps, when he left in his blue box, he was condemning them to a worse fate, that his actions would cost more innocents their lives. All the time he had feared returning to Earth. That was her home. Amelia. Their home. Amelia and Rory.
And so he spent his time away, trying to fool himself that he was okay. That he might be okay. He remembered all the times they told him he was brave or wonderful, all the times she had called him her best friend. Her very best friend. A title never more important. He had been known as many, many things but that, that was by far the most prestigious.
But it was over.
And that was by far the most painful. But he kept her words in his head. To keep hm strong. To keep him…going. She told him to keep going. She was here. Safe and sound. In his head. So Scottish.
He turned back, to survey the planet one last time. A planet he would forget, because he did through no fault but old age. An age. An age of living. The skies were blue and the grass green. He smiled a smile tinged with remembrance. So like Earth. The gravity levels were off but… planet was saved. But he was not. He never could be. He thought to himself that it was time to go.
So he turned to his constant companion, and left.
