Chapter 13 – Answers

Mike had laid his sister down on the couch located in Charlie's office and just stared at her as they waited for Carlisle, Jacob standing behind him and not saying anything. There were so many questions running through his mind, and he knew they were going to have to wait, even if he did not want them to. Why were those men chasing her? What is she even doing in Forks? Did she get herself into trouble again? So many questions and he did not have answers for them. As relieved as he was that she was there and alive, alive being the important part, he was utterly confused by her appearance. Hell, he was confused as to why she would have ever been in Forks thus appearing in Alice's vision.

Nothing made sense right now. On one had he felt grateful to a vampire for helping to save his sister, but on the other, Alice was a vampire. However, if it had not been for that vision, no one would have been on the lookout and it would have probably come true. So was he supposed to hate the leeches, or feel gratitude and a softening in his attitude? Leah hadn't in the years she had known about them, but maybe, just maybe, they weren't as bad as Mike had previously thought… well, at least the Cullen's.

Carlisle arrived soon after he got the call and walked into the station. He wasn't sure what to expect, but he did know that he was going into hostile territory. Mike was married to Leah, who wasn't exactly on friendly terms with the Cullen's just because of what they were. There were probably wolves around, some who accepted Carlisle and his family and others who didn't; needless to say, the leader of the Cullen coven was on his guard.

Walking into the station, the doctor found Charlie waiting on him and smiled, "Hi, Charlie."

"Carlisle, thanks for coming. Can I talk to you before you see the patient?" Charlie inquired looking slightly uncomfortable.

"Sure," Carlisle followed Charlie to one of the back observation rooms where they could have a private conversation. As soon as the door was closed, he asked, "What's going on?"

The chief sighed, "I don't think she is hurt. In fact, I'm sure she just fainted, but I will tell you that Mike is a little hostile towards you because of Leah. However, today we caught two men following Carli and they had 9mm guns on them and a few other toys in the back. I'm not sure what is going on and think it is safer to have you examine her than it would be to take her to the hospital where it is easier to get to her. Now it is possible, they saw her somewhere and decided she would make a nice toy, or they could be after her. According to Mike she got involved with the wrong people down south. I would rather not take the chance."

"Understood," Carlisle nodded digesting this new information. "Can I see her now?"

"Yah, she's in my office on the couch. I wanted you to look at her before Mike transported her anywhere… just in case something really is wrong."

"I appreciate that. Well, let's see what's going on with her," Carlisle stated and proceeded to follow Charlie to his office. He walked in and received a glare for being there, but watched as Mike moved allowing the doctor easy access to the now conscious girl lying on the couch. Under the intense scrutiny of Leah's husband, Carlisle asked, "Hi Jake, Mike. When did she wake up?"

Mike answered, "About five minutes ago."

Turning his attention to his patient, Carlisle asked, "Hi. I'm Dr. Cullen and I am just here to make sure you are alright. Does anything hurt?" He pulled out a pen light and started his examination, waiting for her to answer his questions.

"No. I ran into them at a gas station and made it here before they could do anything to me."

Carlisle nodded and continued his examination. When he was done, he grinned, "Well, I think you are going to be alright. You are a little dehydrated and I can already tell you're exhausted, so that probably caused your fainting spell. Of course, being chased and scared doesn't help. I recommend resting and fluids. If you want, I can come by the house in a bit and start an IV drip. That would make things easier and get you better faster."

Mike didn't know about allowing Carlisle into his home, but Carli had agreed before he could stop her; and besides it was probably better for her. Now, he would just have to inform his wife that one of the leeches would be entering their home.

Carli turned her attention away from the doctor and looked at her brother, "Did you know I was coming? Everyone moved so quickly…" It had almost seemed as if her brother were waiting for her, but that wasn't possible. Unless, he had somehow been tipped off, but who would have gotten word to him. She hadn't told anyone where she was going.

Glancing at Charlie and then down to Carlisle, Mike explained, "We received word that you were missing and heading this way. One of our officers spotted you coming into town and followed you. Since we were already on alert, we were prepared." He hated withholding the complete truth right now, however, there was no way around it; so he told as much of the truth as possible.

"Oh," the girl said from the couch and tried to sit up. Carlisle helped her and she shivered, "Sorry Dr. Cullen, but your hands are cold, but I guess that is the same for all doctors." She snickered a little.

Carlisle smiled, "Very true." He brushed it off even though he heard Jacob snicker behind him and turned back to Mike, "Will you be taking her to your house now? I will need to go and get the IV setup and then I can come and set it up."

"Yah," Mike confirmed the location.

Charlie stopped them momentarily, "Just a second. Carlisle, do you think she is well enough to answer some questions?"

Scowling, Mike chastised his father-in-law, "Charlie!"

"What? There are questions that need answers. We have two men in a holding cell and we need to know what is going on. Now, if I need to, I will pull rank and kick you out of here," Charlie retorted.

Shaking his head, Carlisle said, "I don't think there will be a problem with that." He turned to Carli, "Do you think you can answer some questions?"

Carli nodded, "I can do that."

"Why were you on your way here?" Charlie asked.

The woman ran her hand through her hair and exhaled, "I came hoping to find my brother."

"Why?" The chief pressed.

She looked around the room, locking eyes with her brother, and then continued, "I witnessed something I shouldn't have. When I left Oklahoma, I made my way to LA for a while and started life over. I found someone new and thought that he was better than Shane, but it was the same type of crowd."

"How do you know that?" Jacob questioned.

Clearing her throat, she fisted her hands together until her knuckles were white, "I was at work one day and started to feel really sick, so my boss sent me home. Adam took care of me, but when he took me to the doctor, we made a little stop at some store. He was taking a while, so I went in to look for him and found him with a gun to his head. I got so scared I ran. I went to the cops, but they couldn't find anything. I don't even know what all that was. I went home and there was a note on the door saying they would get me next inside I found Adam. After calling the police, I ran away and went back to Oklahoma to find Mike, but he had already left. When I found out he came here, I came looking for him."

"Shit!" Charlie growled. This was not good. They had a witness of some sort here in their office and she had a death threat. Not only that, but she ran instead of sticking around. This didn't look good at all.

"When did this happen Carli?" Mike asked.

"About a month ago, a little longer," she answered.

Charlie shook his head, "I'll make a couple of calls and question the guys we have in holding. Mike, take her home and get her settled. She will probably be more protected there than she will be off the reservation."

"I'll get the message to the others. The reservation will be going on lockdown. No strangers allowed. Carlisle you have permission to come and take care of Carli as you need to. I'll tell the others, but everyone else will need to stay back… as usual."

"Thank you, Jacob. What about Chris? She has permission from the elders. Should she stay away as well?" Carlisle stated calmly. This was not a good situation at all.

Shaking his head, Jacob answered, "No, she will still have permission for right now. I know she comes onto the res to wait for Seth sometimes. For now, it should be alright. I just don't want strangers coming on, and everyone is going to be on alert as it is, so anyone else coming close, might agitate things."

Carlisle agreed, "Understood."

Carli furrowed her brow, "You don't even know if those guys are related to what happened in LA. Aren't you over reacting?"

"Better to do this now than to let anyone near and it be too late. Charlie, let me know what you find out," Jacob grumbled and left the room. He needed to pass the word on as soon as possible.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed and confused, Carli asked, "Is he always like that?"

Mike replied, "He is somewhat of a leader in the tribe and takes his job very seriously. He is also sort of my…"

"Family," Charlie supplied, not wanting to go into the whole weird dynamic of the family, of how Mike and Jacob were actually, sort of, uncle and nephew.

Nodding, Mike agreed, "Yah, Charlie here is my step father-in-law and Jacob is engaged to one of his family members." It was the easiest way to put it.

"Father-in-law?" Carli asked. She had not realized her brother had gotten married.

Mike grinned, "Yah, I got married about four years ago to Charlie's step-daughter, and we are expecting our first baby. In fact, let's go so that you can meet Leah and get settled in. Carlisle, you know how to get to the house?"

"I do," the doctor stated and watched as Mike and Carli said their goodbyes and left the room. He looked at Charlie, "You don't think those men just picked her." It was not a question, it was a statement.

"Unfortunately, that is what I think right now," Charlie sighed.

Carlisle ran a hand over his face and said, "Well, I'm going to go inform the family about this and then go over to Mike and Leah's. If those men are more than just random, this could get dangerous fast."

"I know. I'll see you later," the chief told the other man and received a cold handshake as the doctor left. Charlie had a feeling the shit was about to hit the fan and he was not looking forward to the upset. After what had happened years prior, he didn't think his little community could handle something like that again. First, he had men to interrogate though, and then he would figure out what to do next.

Cullen Home…

Seth and Chris were in their room sitting on the bed side by side as they talked. They tried to steer clear of everything that was going on right now, and in the end Chris had started to tell him about her beloved Scotland. He could see it so clearly by the picture she painted with her words, and turning his head to look at her, the smile on her face, the glint in her eyes made her breathtaking. Unable to hold back any longer, he lifted his hand and turned her face towards his. Leaning forward, he captured her lips and found the surprisingly soft when he though they would be cold and hard. They weren't, they were perfect; and she opened her mouth to deepen the kiss... which he did. He might have done more, but Emmett had bad timing and knocked on their door pulling, them out of their reverie and calling the downstairs. Seth pulled back and whispered, "Later." Right now he didn't care what Carlisle had to say, he wanted to rip Emmett to pieces and take his mate somewhere private. He couldn't wait to be back in their house again.
