Chapter 13 - A new start
Ginny's POV
I'd been home a week and 3 days and was only just beginning to feel myself again. I was still using the crutches but was trying at times to walk without them, much to Harry's annoyance. He hadn't returned to work yet and was watching my every move constantly, I'd tried to persuade him to get back into a routine but he was having none of it. Even though we were together constantly we didn't talk much about what had happened and what we intended to do with our future. I was concerned about him if truth be told for the fact he had suffered a loss too but didn't seem to have an opinion or emotion about it. Our days were filled with visitors and when we were alone at night Harry avoided the subject all together which I knew wasn't healthy, I needed to talk about it too but only had the chance to discuss with Hermione. She had stopped by every day, sometimes with the children and others without when her parents or mine were looking after them, she had took it upon herself to help clean with Harry or do the shopping or make us dinner. I wanted to tell her that I wasn't a complete invalid but she was adamant to help us out, it was selfish of me I know. Harry had also been extremely quiet over the last week and I still worried if he was weighing up his options of what would be good for his future, I had admitted to Hermione of my fears of him choosing Chantelle over me. She had told me to relax and remember that he wasn't choosing anyone and that it was all in my head but I still worried myself over it at times.
"Would you like some lunch Gin?" Hermione asked from the lounge doorway, I looked up from my book that I had been staring at for the last ten minutes and nodded.
"Yes please but please let me make it," I offered.
"No its fine Harry and I have it under control," she smiled before heading back to the kitchen. I sighed and threw my book onto the coffee table. I was beginning to feel like a prisoner in my own home but I didn't want offend the pair of them so decided to keep quiet. They walked into the room a few minutes later with a pitcher of iced water and a homemade salad along with various meats and pickles on a plate.
"This looks lovely."
"Thank you," Hermione beamed.
"So where are the children today?" I asked whilst helping myself to some food.
"With my mother, she asked me last week if she could have them for a few hours."
"That's kind of her," I said.
"She only wants them to show them off to her friends at the weekly village coffee morning," Hermione said with a roll of her eyes.
"That's grandparents for you," Harry smiled.
"How's Ron getting on without Harry?" I wondered.
"Oh he's fine, you don't need to worry about rushing back either Harry he has it all under control."
"That's good to know," Harry nodded clearly impressed.
"Speaking of which," I began.
"Ginny I've already explained to you that I'm only returning to work once you have fully recovered," Harry said.
"But I'm a lot better now and I was hoping to get back to work soon myself," I replied.
"Gin you are in no fit state to get back to work," Harry said.
"Why aren't I?"
"Because you're still on crutches and need to recover fully," he sighed.
"Harry you need to stop wrapping me up in cotton wool," I began.
"And you need to understand that what you have been through has been very traumatic for you."
I opened my mouth to respond but closed it quick and decided to keep quiet, he wasn't going to budge and I was in no mood to argue especially not in front of Hermione. We finished our lunch in silence with an atmosphere that had descended on the room.
"Am I allowed to go to the family dinner tonight?" I asked haughtily and they looked at one another for a moment before Harry answered,
"We're not so sure."
"And why is that?"
"Because you need to rest," Harry replied.
"Well let me tell you this Potter I am going to the meal and that's with or without your permission, Charlie will be back from Cuba later and I want to see them both."
"But-"
"No buts," I snapped. "Hermione you will apparate me there won't you?"
"Erm sure," she said looking confused at Harry.
"Aren't I good enough now?" he asked.
"Not at the minute you aren't while you're being an arse," I scowled.
"After all I've done for you," he looked outraged.
"Yes Harry after all you have done," I shot back before standing and hobbling out of the lounge. I went to our bedroom and flopped down on the bed frustrated, I knew they would be talking about me in there but I didn't care at this precise moment, I needed some space. And air. I stood back up and walked down to the front door and let myself out, I'd made it all the way down to the lobby before Harry caught up with me.
"And where do you think you are going?" he demanded to know.
"Outside for some fresh air," I said not bothering to stop.
"You can get air out on the balcony," he retorted but I merely shrugged before struggling to get out of the door.
"I'm only doing this to protect you," he sighed.
"No you are smothering me," I said. I let the door close behind me and walked a few yards up the street before my hip began to ache, he was right I shouldn't have snuck out but my pride wasn't going to let him know that. I stopped and leant against the building and before I knew it I was in tears, not from the pain but from the fact I didn't know what to do for the best anymore. Harry was bottling everything amongst smothering me and Hermione was watching every bloody move I took. When I turned to walk back Harry was stood behind me with his arms crossed and a smug grin on his face, it dropped however when he realised I was crying. He rushed over to me and threw his arms around me and I sobbed loudly into his chest.
"Its ok baby just let it out," he soothed as he stroked my hair.
"It's not ok," I cried.
"I know but it will be, in time."
"How come I haven't seen you break down like this?" I asked looking up at him now.
"Because I have to be strong for you," he answered simply. I placed my head back against his chest and cried until I could no more.
"I hear you had an escapee this morning?" I heard Bill chuckle to Harry. I was sat on the sofa playing with Molly and Pip listening to their conversation.
"Oh yes but she didn't get too far," Harry replied, I could feel his eyes on me.
"You can't blame her Harry she must be going mental not being able to go out, I know I would be," Bill reasoned making me smile.
"Aunt Ginny can we make some puppets?" Molly asked me hopefully.
"After dinner darling," I said and she nodded before returning to the picture of a Dragon we were colouring in.
"… just don't think she understands the seriousness of what has happened to her," Harry was now saying. "She's acting as though she can do anything but look at her still on those bloody crutches, her hip should have healed by now and yet she's still suffering with it. I'm beginning to wonder if she'll have that limp for life and what if she does Bill, she'll have to retire from the team and Merlin knows how she will handle that."
"I don't think it's the hip that's bothering her," Bill sighed.
"I know what you're going to say and I really don't want to talk about."
"You have to at some point Harry because believe me it will torture you if you don't."
"How do you know I've been keeping quiet?" Harry asked.
"Not from Ginny," Bill answered. "Hermione."
"Why is she discussing me with you?"
"Not just me but all of us, she's worried about you and Ginny. She knows exactly how Ginny is feeling because they talk but with you it's like you're a closed book," Bill said.
"I don't have to discuss everything with Hermione," Harry answered with some edge to his voice.
"I'm not saying you have to but there was a time when you would have and even if you don't talk to Hermione you should be talking to Ginny, she's your girlfriend and she loves you and is worried about you."
"Evening," Charlie said upon entering the lounge. Everyone went to greet them with hugs before I finally got up of the sofa and walked over to them both.
"What in the name of Godric have you been doing?" Charlie laughed as we hugged.
"It's a long story I'll tell you later," I smiled before hugging Elisa.
"So come on then how was it?" Fred asked with a wiggle of his eyebrows.
"You can tell us over dinner," my mother said from the doorway, "it's ready."
We all made our way into the kitchen and I was seated between Harry and Percy, both whom were fussing over me being comfortable enough.
"Where are the children going to sit?" George asked with a frown.
"Don't you worry about them I've put them in the snug just for tonight and Hugo is sleeping in his Moses basket so it's just the adults in here," my mother explained.
"Do you trust them all alone mother?" Percy asked concerned.
"They've been warned that if they get into any mischief then they won't be allowed to come and see the Dragons next week," my mother said.
"Dragons?" I asked.
"Yes dear Charlie is looking after some in Wales next week and me and your father said we would take all of the children to see them."
"Well that sounds safe," I answered sarcastically.
"Your just jealous Gin," Fred grinned and I stuck my tongue out at him.
"So how was the honeymoon?" Angelina asked the newlyweds. We spent the next twenty minutes listening all about their time in Cuba and the boys were very impressed with the fact Charlie had done a 70ft cliff dive.
"I bet I could do a higher one," Fred mused.
"Of course you could darling," Angelina said with a roll of her eyes.
"So come on Gin what's been going on with you?" Charlie asked. I put my knife and fork down on my half full plate and sighed.
"I fell of my broom."
"You fell of your broom?" he asked confused.
"Yes."
"During a practice?"
"No during the first match against the Bats. We had just won and I decided to do the loop de loop trick and just as I was upside down my broom jerked hard in the wind and it threw me off. They tried to stop me from falling but it all happened very quickly," I explained.
"So you see Charlie you weren't the only one doing some diving from 70ft in the air," George teased.
"I don't understand why no one caught you?" Charlie asked ignoring George.
"Ali and Katie were beneath me trying to stop me but I was falling that fast and in a spiral motion I think they were too afraid to get close, so they decided to break my fall. Hermione had me in her sights to stop me but rouge Bludger collided with me as she performed the spell and it missed me."
"Blimey," Charlie sighed.
"What injuries did you have?" Elisa asked.
"Broken wrist, broken leg, cracked ribs, broken hip and a concussion."
"Merlin Gin you're lucky to be here," Charlie said now looking concerned.
"There was another injury too," I began glimpsing at Harry.
"What else?"
"When the Bludger hit me it collided with my stomach and it caused," I paused here and swallowed hard, this was the first time I was saying it out loud. "It caused a miscarriage."
"A miscarriage," Charlie frowned whilst Elisa shook her head. "I don't understand."
"I was pregnant," I replied.
"Pregnant," Charlie repeated clearly in shock. "Did you know?"
"No," Harry answered for me.
"I'm so sorry Ginny," Elisa said getting up from her seat and coming round to hug me. "Harry," she sighed then giving him one.
"So is that why you are on crutches?" Charlie asked still in his seat.
"No my hip is taking a while to mend. They had me on the wrong potion to begin with and now that I'm on the right one it's just taking a while to heal, I'm a lot better than I was though," I tried to smile at him.
"Merlin why didn't anyone tell us?" Charlie asked the rest of the table.
"Because you were on your honeymoon and we didn't want to spoil it for you, we would have been in touch if it were serious," my father explained.
"You don't call this serious?" Charlie asked whilst pointing to me.
"Charlie I'm ok really, I just need a little while to get better that's all," I shrugged.
"Ginny you have lost a baby and nearly broke every bone in your body and your trying to tell me you're ok," Charlie said outraged. "And what about your chances of having a baby now?"
"There extremely low," Harry muttered. "We were having trouble conceiving before all of this happened."
"It just keeps getting better doesn't it," he said sarcastically. "So your telling me the chances of you conceiving were low but you managed too and then when you did you had a miscarriage because of that bloody stupid game you play," Charlie raged.
"Hang on Charlie I didn't go out there knowing I was pregnant and I certainly wouldn't have put our baby at risk like that if I had known," I said my voice raising slightly now.
"So why are you having trouble conceiving"? he asked looking at Harry.
"You can take your eyes of him because it's me," I snapped.
"You?" Charlie said, his eyes practically bulging out of his head.
"Yes me."
"I think you need five minutes alone Charlie to take all of this in, it's obviously shocked you and your upsetting Harry and Ginny," our father said.
"Its fine Arthur," Harry said.
"No it's not Harry he's being an arse," I said.
"Well how do you expect me to react Gin, you've been through all of this and yet you tell me it's not serious and you expect me to just take it in my stride," Charlie seethed.
"You're in shock," Harry and I said together.
"And how are you feeling over all of this Harry?" Charlie said rounding on him now.
"I'm just happy that Ginny is ok," Harry replied.
"Well I bet you are but surely you must be hurting too over losing a baby?"
"We haven't really spoken about it," I mumbled.
"That's because we don't have to talk about it," Harry said to me.
"Don't we?" I asked annoyed. "You might be ok just muddling along and not speaking about what's happened to us but I'm defiantly not ok with it Harry. We lost a baby, no correction I lost the baby. How do you think I feel knowing that I couldn't give you what you wanted, that I was the problem and then when I did I managed to fuck it all up," I shouted.
"Ginevra," my mother chastised.
"What do you want me to say Ginny?" Harry asked standing now. "Do you want me to tell you that everything's going to be ok, that this wasn't your fault and that you weren't to know? Because you weren't to know Gin and this wasn't your fault regardless how you feel over it I don't agree with you. Yes I'm hurt because we have lost a baby and yes I'm slightly annoyed that with the chances we had it was all taken away from us but what can we do? We can't change anything."
"I'm not saying I want you to change it all I just want you to show me that it's affected you too," I said standing also.
"Well it has affected me, I think about if it was a girl or a boy? Who it would have looked like and what we would have called it? I think about it all Gin but it doesn't change anything does it," he said before turning on his heal and marching out of the door with a bang.
"Well done Charlie," I snapped before grabbing my crutches and awkwardly manoeuvring around the table and to the door, I opened it to see Harry marching down the path.
"Harry," I yelled. "Harry come back." He carried on as though he hadn't heard me. "Harry," I shouted one last time just before he reached the end of the path and disapparated out of sight. I walked back into the kitchen and the silence was deafening.
"Are you happy now?" I asked Charlie. He had the decency to look ashamed.
"Not particularly."
"I should think not do have any idea what you have done," I said.
"I'm sorry Gin I think the shock of it all caused me to over react."
"Over react," I repeated. "You've done more than over react, that man is trying to hold it all together and come to terms with all that has happened recently and your sat there shouting your mouth of which I may add is very out of character for you," I chastised.
"I know and I'm sorry. I think the fact I'm only just finding out all of this has upset me, I really am sorry Ginny," he said whilst standing and walking over to me.
"Oh no you're not creeping over here thinking I'm going to forgive you that easily," I shook my head at him. "Do you know what I just wish everything would go back to normal and there was no more arguments, accidents or people's lives being messed with."
"We know you do Gin, this is going to take you and Harry some time to come to terms with it all," Hermione sighed. "It takes everyone different lengths of time to grieve."
"But how can we grieve something we never met," I asked.
"You just do," my mother replied.
"Mummy," Dominique said entering the kitchen.
"Yes darling," Fleur answered.
"Freddie and Pip have been sick."
There was several movements of chairs where the woman rushed into the snug to see what was going on, I realised I was left with just the boys.
"Great they better not have a bug," George moaned.
"Something to look forward too," Fred sighed.
"Where do toy think Harry has gone?" Ron asked me and I shrugged.
"Who knows."
"What a bloody rubbish night this turned out to be," Percy said. There was silence again until Penelope walked back into the room with a pale face.
"I wouldn't go in the snug if I were you it's awful in there. Pip was sick causing Freddie to be sick because apparently he can't handle it and then to top it off Lucy slipped in it and now there all in tears."
"I think I'll go home," I said.
"Good idea," Ron agreed. "Give me five minutes and Hermione and I will take you back."
Not wanting to argue anymore I sat in silence waiting while Hermione brought Hugo through and a crying Rose. She ran into Ron's arms and hid her face in his chest while sobbing.
"It's ok Rose it's only a bit of sick," he said trying to calm her.
"It's everywhere," she wailed and I bit back the urge to laugh.
"What's wrong with you?" Fred asked me suspiciously.
"Utter chaos over some sick."
"Right I'm ready," Hermione said at last. We said our goodbyes with Charlie apologising some more and then we headed back to the flat. I wasn't surprised to find Harry hadn't returned here but Hermione was beginning to look worried as I put the kettle on. Rose had quietened down now that she was away from the Burrow and Hugo was still sound asleep.
"I can't believe Charlie reacted the way he did," Ron said shaking his head.
"Me neither," I shook my head. "Charlie has one of the coolest heads I know, now if it had been you-"
"Meaning?" Ron asked angrily.
"That you have a hot head Ronald and I think he only reacted that way because he's only just found out," Hermione said.
"Well either way it was uncalled for and look where it's left me and Harry, another bloody argument," I sighed. The front door slammed shut and we all looked at one another in silence, Harry walked into the kitchen and stood before me.
"I'm sorry."
"Where have you been?" I asked.
"To clear my head."
"Why?"
"Because you were right I've been bottling everything up just to keep the peace and keep you happy, I realise now that was wrong," he answered.
"You have to be honest with me Harry," I told him and he nodded his head.
"I am upset Gin that we have lost a baby and I think about it constantly and how we could have stopped it from happening. I think about how beautiful you would have looked pregnant and how many sleepless nights we would have had," he smiled sadly. "But most of all I think of you and how sad you are now and how there's nothing I can do about it to make you happy again."
"You make me happy each and every day Harry, just because this has happened doesn't mean you still don't make me happy," I replied.
"But I can see the sadness in your eyes and the fact we can't have children is heart breaking."
"I know," I said feeling ashamed. "Look Harry we need to clear the air right now and deal with this, I want you to know that I'm giving you the choice to find someone who can give you what you want."
"Are you mad?" Ron asked from the breakfast bar.
"Shhhh," Hermione reprimanded him.
"I've been thinking it all over a lot and I don't want you feeling like you are trapped and have to stay with me because it's the right thing to do, the chances of me giving you a child are next to nothing and I wouldn't want you to miss out on going through that experience."
"Well I have been thinking it all over too and Ginny there is no one on this earth who I want to spend the rest of my life with then you. You're mad for even suggesting that I have a choice to leave if I want, I love you and I want to be with you until my dying day. I'm not choosing you because I have other options I'm choosing you because it's always been you and I don't want anyone else and that includes Chantelle. I know your worried about me running of with her but believe me when I say your my life and I can't imagine being without you."
"That's good to hear," I laughed nervously.
"And I think I've finally figured it all out Gin, I do want to marry you and the excuses I have come up with over the years are ridiculous. From the day we moved into this place it was like we were already married, the amount of times I've referred to as my wife in my head is crazy. But in reality it was just too much fun and easier not to ask you because then we would have to grow up and move out of this amazing flat. We'd have to settle down and do the right thing and I wasn't ready, I felt like a huge amount of my childhood and teenage years were taken from me and I guess I've just been compensating all of these years for it by living life to the full. The day we marry it will all feel real and I'll have to be responsible again," he grinned.
"I can understand that but Harry we can still be married and be irresponsible together and go on loads of holidays and drink on a school night and we most definitely don't have to move out of this flat. It's our home and I bloody love this place," I smiled.
"I hope I've made some sort of sense for you on how I'm feeling," he said.
"You have and we need time Harry to get over what's happened and with all due respect Hermione we need time together, just the two of us," I said to her.
"I know," she sighed. "I was just trying to be helpful."
"And you have been extremely helpful, maybe you could come round three days a week instead of seven," I teased before putting an arm around her.
"We'll see," she smirked.
"I'm not going back to work yet Gin I'm not ready," Harry admitted. "I just don't want to face everyone and I want to be with you and look after you."
"I guess I'm the one who should be the sorriest of all," I sighed causing all three of them looked at me confused. "I've been mopping around moaning about the fact I've been cooped up but I'm just too selfish to realise how much you are all doing for me and how concerned you are. Ron I know you're having to run the entire Aurors office alone because of me and I also know you're having to bring paper work home every night just to keep up, plus you and Hermione have a new born and a one year old and yet you are here every day Hermione looking after Harry and I and I honestly can't tell you how much I appreciate it. And you Harry well I can see how worried you are and that you're hurting and instead of comforting you I've been pushing you away and not respecting your feelings through self pity."
"Only you could apologise for being a burden when you've done nothing wrong," Ron said with a roll of his eyes. "We all love you Gin and just want you to be ok."
"And I will be in time," I answered honestly. "It's just a lot to take in all at once," I then confessed. There was silence for a few moments where we all seemed to be digesting my words.
"You're not mad at me for never proposing until now are you?" Harry asked and it took me a few moments to realise what he had just said.
"What did you just say?" I said. He took my hand and helped me through to the lounge and out onto the balcony.
"I know this isn't the most romantic or grandest way of asking you but I love you and that's all that matters Ginny. You my life, my soul mate, my one and my best friend and I couldn't imagine existing without you." He got onto one knee and pulled out a small velvet box from his jacket pocket. I began to shake and tears were silently falling sown my face.
"Ginevra Molly Weasley, will you do me the honour and make me the happiest man on earth and be my wife?" he asked looking up at me with his beautiful green eyes. The box popped open and a ring I had never seen before shined back at me. I looked up and laughed with shock at the words 'Marry me Ginny' lit up on the Shard in London which could be seen from our flat.
"Harry," I breathed. Was this the right time my mind was asking or was it just an excuse to cheer me up and for Harry to prove he wanted me. I looked back down at Harry and decided there and then that it was, no matter if it was the right thing to do or not. I loved him and that's all that mattered to me.
"Yes," I beamed and his face broke into a huge grin.
"Really?" he asked.
"Really."
He stood and with a shaking hand placed the beautiful emerald ring onto my finger before lifting me of my feet and kissing me hard. Inside Ron and Hermione were cheering and clapping and Rose was giggling loudly, not one to miss out Hugo had woken and was beginning to cry at all of the fuss.
"How on earth did you ask them to light up the shard?" I wondered as he hugged me tightly.
"It's not what you know but who you know," he said mysteriously into my ear.
"I love you," I said and he nodded against my shoulder. "The rings different."
"I know," he said pulling back to look at me. "I've been and brought it tonight, a new ring for a new start."
