Prompt Request from SaraiVe: Dress (Part 2 of 3)

"I wanna' go back to tha' farm," Beth announced as they sat by the fire.

Daryl looked up at her. They hadn't spoken much since their interaction at the gas station, but Beth was tired of the silence.

"Ain't nobody gonna' be there," Daryl stoked the fire, replying pessimistically.

"You never know," Beth tried to sound confident.

"Nothin' there anymore Beth," Daryl tossed the stick he'd been using to poke at the fire into the flames.

"There's this picture in my room," Beth countered breathily, "It's of all of us before an Easter Sunday service. My momma wore this dress…it was my favorite of hers. I'm standin' in between Maggie and Shawn. Momma and Daddy were behind me," she paused, "I'm sure Maggie'll want one too, when we find her, so I'd be sure t'grab a family photo for her too."

She could feel Daryl's eyes on her. She doodled in the soft ground with her finger, trying to keep from blurting anything more out under his intense scrutiny.

"I jus'…really miss everyone," she stated.

She was finally able to admit it out loud. She was finally able to talk about the intense loss she was feeling. She had experienced so much loss in her short lifetime, but she knew Daryl's life hadn't been any better, even before.

"It's 'ah good day's walk from here," Daryl finally answered, "We risk not runnin' across anyone if we leave tha' area."

"So you do think they're still alive," Beth smiled for the first time in days.

"If they're out there," Daryl peaked at her from the corner of his eye, "we'll find 'em."

Beth's smile widened.

In his own way, she knew Daryl was trying to comfort her. He hadn't spoken about anyone being alive or dead since their argument at the moonshiner's residence. When she would make a comment about a place she had thought to look, he would never acknowledge that she'd spoken, but in a few hours' time, she would find herself being lead to that exact location.

When not a single place had turned over even the slightest clue, she had thought maybe they would have backtracked to the farm. The farm had made her think of her family and she found herself feeling homesick. It was no longer her home, they didn't have a home, but the memories attached to it were enough for her to want to see it one last time. She knew the barn had burnt to the ground. Maybe the house was still standing? Maybe they would find something to lead them in the right direction? Maybe visiting her old home place one more time would give her the closure she needed.

Then again…maybe they would be there.

A/N: Okay…so I can't have been the only person who wondered…why didn't they ever mention the farm after the prison fell? Did they go back for anything after they took over the prison? The walkers would have moved on and they must have had a few things there worth going back for? I can understand not wanting to revisit a bad memory, but after thinking of what I, personally, would want to do, I would want at least a family photo. Or maybe a change of clean clothes? I would just be curious if the house had made it or if the fire from the barn had spread and burned it to the ground. Just my imagination running rampant and my curiosity getting the better of me.

Hope you enjoyed these SaraiVe! Thank you for prompt requests!
