Chapter 12: This Eternal Cycle
What's going on?
Zero sat next to me, apparently able to stay in the Day Class, and I noticed the bracelet hanging on Yuki's wrist. All the girls, and even some boys, were excitedly whispering among themselves. "...new ethics..."
A new teacher?
The door creaked open, and he walked in. My eyes widened in shock, and I'm pretty sure Zero's did too.
Toga Yagari? Why-
Questions left and right were fired at him, and a majority of them were from girls, though the male population of the class still had their fair share of questions. None of them were particularly interesting, but one-
"U-um… That eyepatch- is that a new fashion trend or something?" a short girl wearing glasses asked.
At once, Zero stormed out of the room. I followed suit closely behind. Judging by the steady footsteps behind us, the third prefect did too.
The one who proclaimed himself 'father' was waiting for us at the gate, a knowing smile on his face.
The price paid… to save a life but to kill another...
Yuki Cross was running around, as carefree as a sparrow, flitting from stall to stall, shop to shop. Zero and I simply waited behind, carrying the-
Why are we the only ones carrying this stuff? I wondered. Zero seemed okay with it though, so I kept quiet.
"Hey, Chika-san, what's that?" The petite prefect asked, pointing at a dark bag I was holding.
"Hm? Oh, this? It's just some typical clothes I picked up. I can't go around wearing this everywhere, you know!" I said, feigning cheerfulness, though it came out as more of a grimace. I held the sleeve of the Day Class uniform, which I was wearing for lack of more appropriate garments.
"Oh! I know somewhere we should go!"
"A cafe?"
"Mhmm!" She smiled around a large mouthful of parfait. I stared at my now lukewarm cup of black coffee. Zero probably wanted-
"I wanted noodle soup."
Yup.
If she was offended, she didn't show it, instead wolfing down her dessert even faster. "Oh, you two! That new teacher- do you know him?"
Zero looked away, as did I.
"Oh, you d-don't have to answer that if you don't want to- he just seems kind of scary..."
"He's not."
"When you get to know him he's actually rather-" I added, earning a slightly surprised look from the other hunter, but we were interrupted by one of the waitresses of the shop.
"Excuse me! Are you in the Cross Academy Night Class?" Not even waiting for our reply, she continued on. "I knew it! You seem different from everybody else!" A dark look was cast across Zero's face, but she rambled on. "Do you know someone named Aido? He likes sweet things, and he comes in here-"
"I'm leaving." I picked up the traces of two Level E's just as he left, and headed outside to investigate, leaving Yuki alone.
She's safest there.
"You… I bet you're delicious… Let me drink it… Let me drink it all!" A disheveled Level E tried to pounce on me from behind as I entered a dark alleyway, but I turned to the side, its claws barely grazing my shoulder. I slashed it down in an instant. Coarse black ash scattered in the wind.
"You're free now..."
Be reborn and be free… Which I can never do… This cycle...
I shook my head. I don't have time for this.
I smelled blood. That must be where the other Level E is… Suddenly the presence was gone. I hurried over, to where Zero and Yuki were chatting with Ichijo and Shiki. "Well, it looks like you took care of this… so what's this about a gathering tonight?" I asked, listening in to the conversation.
Both vampires turned towards me, my presence known. "Of course, you're invited too!" Ichijo beamed, then turned to leave, a subtle nod in my direction.
That night, Yuki knocked on my door.
"What is it?" I asked tiredly.
"Did you forget? Ichijo-senpai invited us to the Moon Dormitory- "
"I'm not going."
"Eeh?"
"I said, I'm not going."
"But Maki-san..." she whined, pleading until I finally relented.
"Fine. But if anything happened to those idiots, it's not my fault."
Ichijo's eighteenth birthday party, it turned out to be.
All the vampires snickered as we walked pass, all hostile looks sent at us.
"Yuki." Kaname Kuran sat atop a 'throne', gesturing for her to come sit next to him. I felt all the pairs of eyes trained on me, warily watching. The Pureblood's lips curled into a cruel smile, which he sent my way. I turned, drawing my sword as I did so.
"Don't want to overstay my welcome, Kaname Kuran," I muttered as I made my way out of the beast's lair. I can't breathe this foul air for much longer...
"We should kill her…" I heard a few whispers amid the commotion.
I smirked. Good luck with that.
I took a seat near the pool, staring out at the mirror-smooth water. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a human-shaped figure approach in the reflection.
"Sensei?"
"I heard it's 'Chika Maki' now, isn't it?" I nodded silently. "Does Zero-" I shook my head. "I'm sorry."
"It's alright."
He stared up at the moon. "It's almost 'that time again'… isn't it?"
I nodded numbly. "I gave them to Zero-" his expression turned to slightly alarmed. "It's fine," I assured, smiling bitterly. "I'll just have to leave this academy… for a little while."
"You know that won't-"
I shook my head and gestured to Zero, who had stumbled in, gasping for air.
"Hey. Didn't you say you gave him the pills?"
"I did- but… it seems that he's refusing to take them..."
Yagari sighed, a few ashes falling off the end of his cigarette. I caught them, but they were blown away, no evidence left.
"Your eye," I said, thinking about the past. "That woman… She was your fiancee, wasn't-"
"Please... stop..." His suddenly hoarse whisper was more than enough for me to look than him. He was pressing his hand to where his right eye would have been, a slight grimace twisting his features. "It burns... whenever I think of her."
"I-" I fell silent.
I'm sorry, Sensei.
Author ramble corner: *Wheeze* I did it! Three times in a month! That ending though... the feels ;_; (Please, please tell me Yagari isn't Ooc... OTL)
