"Kairi? Is that you?"
Kairi Kairi faced the awaiting princess, her heart stopped beating and she forgot how to breathe, she snapped back to reality and smiled. "My dear princess, my name is Kaoru." She sat across from her and continue to smile. "May I ask what your name is?"
"Ka-Kairi. It's me, Evangeline. We went to school together, don't you remember? We were in Mrs. Romero's class in elementary school."
Her heart was racing 100 miles per hour but she tried hard not to let it show. "What are you talking about, princess?"
Evangeline couldn't believe her eyes; could Kairi really not remember her? Even though she really couldn't blame her. Kairi continued to smile but she really didn't want to be there. She wanted to bail as soon as possible.
"Why don't my new princess tell me about herself? Surely you must've heard a lot about me if you personally requested me." Kairi grabbed the handle of the antique teapot and carefully refilled her tea cup.
Evangeline was quiet for a minute, staring at Kairi and her smile. She didn't know what to say..but at the same time, she couldn't. " I um…I…"-
Kairi tilted her head, waiting for her to answer.
"Kairi, I"-
Before she could, Hikaru came behind Kairi's chair which startled them. "Times up! I'll have my brother back now!"
Hikaru pulled back Kairi's chair and dragged her along against her will. "Hikaru! Wa-Wait a minute!" Kairi looked back at Evangeline who didn't move from her spot, at least she was away from her. And she didn't want to go back.
Hkaru pulled Kairi to his side and made sure she didn't leave his side again. She still saw Evangeline hanging around, and ignored her just enough for her to finally leave the host club. Kairi could finally relax, probably the last time that girl would come here.
At the end of the day, the host club was closed and it was time to clean up. Kairi was one of the last to get dressed after she finished helping Haruhi clean up. She changed back into her school uniform and Hikaru barged into the changing room while she was buttoning up her shirt. Somehow Kairi was already use to that.
"What was that?" He asked.
"What was what?" She asked back.
"With that girl all of a sudden requesting you and you just frozen like a deer in headlights, that wasn't your typical meet and greet."
"I have no idea what you're talking about Hikaru." Kairi put on her school jacket and began tying up her tie
"I heard her calling your real name, she knows you." Hikaru stated. Kairi stayed quiet for a minute, he actually had her there. But he wasn't going to win this fight, not tonight.
"She probably heard my name around the school or confused me for someone else. Kairi is a common name you know." Kairi went to Hikaru and hugged him around his waist. "She probably won't come back again. So don't worry about it alright? We're still together."
Hikaru wrapped his arms around her and leaned his forehead against hers…he didn't believe her bullshit for one second.
"I'm going to finish helping Haruhi then we can go home ok? Wait for me outside." Kairi let go of Hikaru and Hikaru left the changing room. He grabbed both their suit case and stuffed his hand in his pocket before heading to the hall. She was keeping something from her, he knows it. But why won't Kairi tell him? They were friends now weren't they.
He closed the music room door behind him and he heard; "Kairi."
He turned his head and saw the same girl that was with Kairi from before. She looked a little nervous but it seemed like she really wanted to talk to him…except he wasn't Kairi.
"What." He replied.
"Can't we please talk?"
Hikaru looked at her, maybe she can get him to the bottom of this.
"About what?"
Evangeline was quiet for a moment, trying to find the courage to say what she wants to say but Hikaru was getting impatient. "Well spit it out, I don't have all day."
"I um…I just wanted to apologize for what I did to you…all those years ago. You trusted me and I betrayed you. I just wanted to say I'm sorry and"-
"If you want to apologize, you should come up with something more interesting to make your audience amused cause I'm already bored to tears." Hikaru commented.
"W-What?"
"I'm not Kairi."
"Yo-You're not? But…But you"-
"Hikaru, I'm ready. Also let's take Haruhi home too! It's starting to get dark outside." Kairi came out holding Haruhi's hand. Kairi saw Evagenline standing not too far from them but she then ignored her presence and faced Hikaru. "Ok?"
"Hmm fine."
Hikaru looked at Evangeline before he wrapped his free arm around Kairi and left with them. Haruhi on the other hand knew something was wrong as well, she felt Kairi tighten her grip and her hand was shaking. What could have her upset?
They dropped off Haruhi but she denied them to get out of the car so they can see her home. Hikaru took Kairi home but she didn't say a word all the way home. It was seriously annoying him, but before he could say anything, they arrived at her home and she jumped out of the car. She told him she would see him tomorrow and shut the car door.
Kairi sighed with relief, that would be the last of that. Tomorrow is a new day….
Not
Every day for the past three weeks, Evangeline came in, requested for Kaoru, and sat with her, majority of them time, they sat in silence. Hikaru couldn't bear to watch her, the more she sat with the princess, the more it looked like she couldn't take it. And Kairi still won't say anything to him, no matter how many times he asked. More of the days past by, the more Kairi wasn't herself and Hikaru felt alone.
One day, Kairi never came to school. She didn't even text Hikaru about her absence, he had enough! He cut class for the afternoon and arrived to the Hatake mansion. He grabbed the rope that was attached to a bell and he rung it multiple times until someone answered the door.
A young teenager with a large t-shirt, scruffy jeans and with messy black hair opened the gate. He looked younger than Hikaru, he was probably a newbie to the mafia. He looked a little shocked to see Hikaru standing at the door.
"Lady Kairi? Wh-What are you doing here? I thought you were sick today."
"Like fuck. Where is Kairi?"
"Bu-But"-
"Argh, just move it!" Hikaru placed his hand on his face and pushed him away. He barged in on his own with the boy chasing after him.
"Wa-wait! Lady Kairi!"
"I'm not Kairi, you fucking idiot." Hikaru started searching every room, sliding every door he came across hoping to find Kairi's room. "Which one is Kairi's room, god damn it."
"You said not to be disturbed, that you weren't feeling well. Lady Kairi, are you sure you're alright?"
"For the last time, I'm not Kairi. My name is Hikaru Hitachiin, get it right!"
"H-Hikaru?"
Finally Hikaru slid open a door but stopped it before it slammed against the wood. He came across Kairi's room. Kairi was laying on the bed with the covers half on her and she was wearing a long sleeve shirt with black shorts. Her auburn hair was uncombed and showed its messy side on the pillow. She was fast asleep as she hugged a pillow with her right arm.
Hikaru entered the room and turned to stop the young boy from entering. "I am a friend of Kairi, stay out here and make sure we are not disturbed." With those last words, Hikaru slid the door closed, leaving the young boy to his thoughts….hoping that he wouldn't get in trouble for this.
Hikaru took off his shoes so he wouldn't make any noise and placed his suitcase against the wall. He came towards Kairi's bed and carefully sat on the edge. He saw Kairi had her headphones plugged into her ears;he could hear classical music being played probably to help her sleep. He stretched out his arm to grab her shoulder but something else caught his attention, his hand changed direction towards her left hand which held a crumpled piece of paper. Carefully he pulled it out without telling Kairi that the paper was missing.
Hoping to be a clue as to her weird actions, he looked at the crumbled paper. It was actually a school photo, she was probably seven years of age with messy curly auburn hair, her bangs were but uneven as if she cut them herself and thick eyebrows. She had a pink bow in her hair and wore a green polo style shirt that was probably her uniform.
He thought to himself; "Was this Kairi as a child?"
Suddenly the photo was swiped away from his hand. Hikaru saw Kairi was now awake, her headphones were unplugged and she was pissed.
"Get the fuck out!"
Hikaru didn't move, he only glared at her. "Was that you?"
"I said get out!" Kairi got on her knees and pushed him out of the bed. Hikaru jumped on the bed and tried to pin her down. Kairi wouldn't give up. She flung her arms and kicked Hikaru in the gut to push him off. Hikaru winced at the pain but he was able to grab her foot and pulled her towards him until he was in between her legs. He grabbed her wrists and tighten his grip, he didn't care if he was hurting her due to how angry he was at her.
"Let go of me! Now!"
"Not until you talk to me!" Hikaru yelled at her.
"There's nothing to say to you! It's none of your business!"
"Was that girl you?"
"Just go away! I don't need you!"
There was a loud slapping sound echoed in her room, her face was swung to the side as Hikaru slapped her. Kairi finally was able to shut up. She felt some tears trickling down her cheeks as she looked at Hikaru. But instead of staring her down, Hikaru leaned forward and buried his face in her neck. She felt his shaky breathe on the exposed skin on her neck.
"Please…just tell me. I'll do anything to help. I'll tell her off, I'll pretend to be you…Just tell me." There was a moment of silence, Kairi was still staring at the ceiling and listening to Hikaru's pleads. "Ever since that girl…came to the club…you just distance yourself from me. You're starting to pull away…I don't want you to pull away. I want you to stay! Just please tell me…tell me what to do! And I'll do it…just don't pull away."
Kairi felt her lips turn into a soft smile as her hand was released from Hikaru's grip and slowly slithered on the back of his neck. Her breath was shaking just like Hikaru, she was just as scared as he was.
"That picture…was me…when I was seven, I was in elementary school in America before I came here." Hikaru felt her hand on the back of her neck shake softly and tickling his hair. "I…I was a loner. I…didn't have any friends. I never did. I was the black sheep. I had low self esteem, I didn't have the best grades, and I just wanted the other kids to leave me alone. The girl from the club, her name was Evangeline. She was my first friend, one day she just came up to me and asked me if she could be my friend. I was so overflowed with joy…I had to say yes."
More tears were released and Hikaru pushed himself up to face Kairi. She used her hands to cover her eyes to make the tears stop but they didn't and she continued. "We became friends, even her friends became friendly with me. I thought I could be happy…but I was wrong. All of a sudden…the other children started talking about me and spread rumors…and they cut me out of their group. They called me names, beat me up at recess, they pulled on my hair, fuck they even cut my hair and ruin my uniform a few times." Kairi cried harder.
"The teachers couldn't help me, no one could help me but my mother. She pulled me out of the school and we moved away but…the pain was still inside me. I hated them so much! I gave her my trust and she offered friendship…but in reality, she gave me crap and hell! Ever since I left, I tried so hard to change! I tried! I haven't seen her in 10 years…a fucking decade! And she just came up to me…and recognized me in a heartbeat. She saw right through me! I told myself time and again; You're not that girl anymore! I was wrong…I'm still that same girl…10 years ago, a scared stupid girl." Kairi continue to cry.
Now Hikaru knew the story…he didn't see that coming. This girl was tormenting her since elementary school then showed up at the host club, no wonder Kairi was acting weird. As a child, bullying can scar you.
Hikaru slowly pulled on her arms to start to raise her body, Kairi caught on and wrapped her arms around his waist. She cried on his chest as he held her close to him, offering her the protection she wanted. It was almost half n hour before she finally calmed down, they both laid in bed, laying close to each other. Kairi clutched onto Hikaru's shirt as Hikaru stroked her hair out of her face.
"I-I'm sorry. I just…lost control."
Hikaru smirked. "It's fine, really."
Kairi sighed as she closed her eyes. Hikaru could still tell she was troubled. He grabbed her chin and she opened her eyes to stare at his amber colored eyes. "You mentioned before that you still are that same little girl from that picture, right?"
"Yeah…"
"I see no common relation what so ever."
Kairi was quiet, trying to understand what Hikaru was saying. "What are you talking about Hikaru? I just told you"-
"You're bright and kind. You're smart since you're tutoring me in French, and you know I suck at it. You joke around with me and we have so much fun being brothers in the host club. Not to mention, you have five new friends who love you for who you are…and you have me too." Hikaru smiled. "Who you are now…is the exact opposite of that girl in that photo, and you have good hair compared to her too."
Kairi giggled at his joke, giving him his wish to see her smile. Still holding her chin, he was able to gently elevate her face. She obeyed his command as he leaned closer to her. "You will always have me…If you want me."
Kairi didn't say a word but instead she closed her eyes and gently leaned forward. Hikaru mimicked her motives until-
"So this is why you skipped our host club activities? To have sexual encounters?"
They both snapped out of what they were doing when they heard Kyoya's voice, Kairi turned around as Hikaru sat up. They saw the door slid open with the entire host club standing outside Kairi's door, waiting to see what would happen.
"Right on cue when we don't need you in our business." Hikaru commented.
Kairi laid back down and started laughing her ass off, it would've been a perfect movie moment in her mind. Hikaru smirked at her, finally she started laughing. Music to his ears.
