Premonition
Chapter 13
The five Mobians lowered their hands from their ears as Sonic's voice went out. They all watched in horrified silence as the yellow hedgehog continued to scream, but no sound was coming out. No one would, or even could, move as Sonic dropped to the ground and passed out in front of them. They all witnessed the golden body blink blue faster and faster until the Chaos emeralds popped out of him. Six of the seven gems flew an unknown distance to an unknown place. The cyan one dropped to the ground in front of the group.
But they didn't take their eyes off Sonic.
After a long, tense, and pregnant pause, Amy was the first to move. Tears streaming down her scared face, she ran to the fallen hero's side. "SONIC!" The pinkette dropped to the ground in her knees and just looked over Sonic frantically, not knowing what to do. Amy eventually decided to turn Sonic over on his back, since he seemed still when he was laying on his stomach. She calmed a bit when she saw Sonic's chest shallowly moving up and down in a constant rhythm. That may be, but she was still immensely worried.
Amy glanced back to where the others were standing in various degrees of shock. "H-He's alive, but…" She sniffed and wiped the water off her cheek with the back of her hand. "D-Didn't…" The pinkette held back a sob that was threatening to escape. "Didn't you hear…his voice…"
"Yeah…" Rouge fluttered to where they were and focused on Sonic's slightly pained face. "We heard it go out." She ran a hand down her face, concerned for the health of the speedster. "Who knew that it'd turn out like this."
"No one did." Knuckles stepped up, frowning. "We expected that the seven emeralds would turn him super and if not completely heal him, make him better." He threw his hands up in the air, extremely worried for his friend. Sonic could be annoying at times, but was still a person his could rely on. "But it just made him worse!" Knuckles scratched the back of his head worriedly. "Especially because his voice went out." He peered over at Sonic. "Does that mean that he's…mute now?"
"It's a possibility." Shadow replied, ignoring the shocked expression from Amy and the weak glare from Rouge. "Faker's headaches from before had caused his speech impairment. This one was the worst one he had ever had, I'm thinking, so it can't be ruled out."
"No!" Amy yelled out, her tears returning with a vengeance. "He's going to be fine when he wakes up! Just wait!"
"Do you honestly believe that?" Shadow asked sternly, crossing his arms. "We have to be ready for anything when he wakes up." And I mean anything…Sonic's hearing and forgetfulness weren't a huge problem before, but surprises do happen.
Hearing sobbing, the four Mobians turned their heads toward Tails who was holding his head in his hands. His whole body was trembling with every sob. Wanting to help the kit, Rouge approached him and placed a hand on his shoulder. "It's okay Tails…"
"No it isn't!" He looked up at her with damp eyes and a runny nose. "It's not okay!" He hid his head again. "And it's my fault! All my fault…"
"How is this your-"
"Because it was MY idea to collect all of the emeralds!" Tails was crying harder now and Rouge glanced around to see the others looking at the kit sympathetically. "I thought that they would help! B-But apparently….apparently…"
Rouge squeezed his shoulder reassuringly before squatting down to the fox's level. "Tails, hon, look at me." After it seemed like he wasn't going to, Tails lifted his head and slowly focused on her, rubbing away some tears. Rouge looked him in the eyes. "It's not your fault, alright? If anyone was to blame, it would be all of us, not just you. We all thought that the emeralds would make Sonic better. If we didn't, we wouldn't have let Sonic try to go Super. Right, everyone?" She glanced back and saw the others nod minutely. The agent turned back to Tails. "See? It's not your fault. It's either everyone's or no one's fault." She stood back up. "So don't blame yourself, hon."
Tails, understanding Rouge's logic, nodded and tried to stop himself leaking anymore tears. "O-Okay…I won't."
Rouge smiled before standing up and facing the others. She locked eyes with Shadow. "Because of our…new situation, you're going to have to take us back home via Chaos Control so we can put Sonic here on something more comfortable." She gestured down to the fox. "And to patch up Tails' injury."
Shadow nodded as he bent over to grab the gem. He placed it firmly in his striped quills before getting closer to Sonic. With a sigh, Shadow got the limp blue hedgehog in his arms. I would've thought that he was dead if his chest wasn't moving… He straightened back up after adjusting Sonic's body. Ruby eyes glanced at everyone in the clearing. "Ready?"
Knuckles shook his head and pointed to the Master Emerald. "I'll catch up with you all later. I'm gonna hide this somewhere else on the island since we know that Eggman is after the emeralds after that Bokkun stunt."
"Speaking of him, wouldn't getting emeralds be easier for Eggman because we don't have them anymore?" Amy brought up, shifting her worry from Sonic to what trouble the doctor could bring them.
"It would…" Knuckles grunted as he lifted the M.E. over his head. "But we don't even know if he's going to find them, and if he does, we can destroy any buckets of bolts he puts together."
Amy let his words soak in before she smiled widely. "You're right. The good guys always win!" Her eyes drift over to Sonic. Yeah…we always do. Sonic'll bounce back, I just know it!
The four then watched as Knuckles disappeared into the nearby foliage, taking the gem filled to the brim with Chaos energy with him. When the echidna was gone, Shadow called out, "Chaos Control!" In a flash, the quartet with an out-cold extra member left Angel Island.
They reappeared in Tails' and Sonic's living room, the kit conveniently popping up on one of the couches. After looking around to see if they were in the right place, Shadow began to head up the stairs. "I'll take Faker to his room."
Rouge hummed in acknowledgement. "And I'll take care of Tails." She grinned back at the kit as she made her way out of the room and toward the garage where the first-aid kit was located. "Stay here, I'll be right back."
Tails rolled his eyes, previous sadness suppressed for the time being. "Take your time, I can't move anyway."
Amy stood in place for a moment, trying to decide if she wanted to stay down here or go upstairs with Shadow. It was no competition. The pinkette marched up the steps to the second floor and went to the first open door to her left. She peeked in just in time to see Shadow lay Sonic on the bed. He glanced over to her when she came in, but didn't say anything.
Amy wrung her hands together and bit her lip in concern for the one on the bed. "Hey Shadow…"
At this point, the Ultimate Lifeform was passing her and was about to leave the room. He paused at the door frame. "Yes?"
"Were you…were you serious about Sonic being mute?"
Shadow leaned against the frame and crossed his arms. He rose a brow. "And why would I joke about that?"
Amy sighed. "I don't know. I'm just thinking about how it would change around here if he was."
"Yeah, it would be quieter."
"Shadow! I'm being serious here!"
"I am too." Amy glared at him and he shrugged before pushing off of the frame and exiting the room. "Don't jump to conclusions though. I just said that it was a possibility."
She watched him leave before returning her attention to Sonic. Amy approached the side of the bed and stared at the other's now serene face, as if he was just sleeping. She inwardly sighed.
Right…just a possibility…
Emerald eyes blinked open to stare at a blank and empty ceiling. And it's funny, because that's how his head was feeling right now. He couldn't for the life of him figure out whose roof he was looking at, whose bed he was laying on, whose room he was in…and why was his head throbbing something nasty.
It wasn't a full-out migraine or anything, but it hurt enough to be a nuisance. Huffing, the hedgehog placed a hand on his forehead, closed his eyes, and decided to just lay there until it faded away. After ten minutes, his head was still pounding so he threw his legs over the side of the bed, rustling the covers underneath him.
Hold up…
Blinking, the blue Mobian ruffled the sheet again to confirm what he had heard. If he wasn't mistaken, only his right ear was working. The hedgehog covered that ear and moved the covers again.
Nothing.
He heard nothing.
Huh…was I always deaf in one ear? Or is this a new thing? He lowered his hand and examined his body. Speaking of myself, who am I? He prodded his brain for any useful information, but nothing came up. Sighing, green irises then roamed the room their owner had woken up in somehow.
They took in the light blue walls and used carpet. The Mobian then focused on the mirror attached to another wall. Getting off the bed, he moved toward it and looked at himself in the mirror. Emeralds scanned over a streamline blue hedgehog body. Well, that explains what I am…
He groaned and immediately noticed that there was no voice to it. Alarmed, the hedgehog attempted to speak only for his tongue to not cooperate with him. I can't talk either? Is this a normal thing for me? The blue Mobian scratched the back of his head in agitation. It'll be real nice if someone just filled me in here.
Turning away from the mirror and the image of himself, the hedgehog eyed the closed door on the opposite side of the room. He went over and placed a hand on the handle, wondering if there was anyone else in the house that would jar his memory. If they could. He turned the knob. I wonder whose house this is anyway. The Mobian stepped out of the room and glanced up and down the connecting hallway. He smiled seeing how big the floor was. If it's mine, I must be stacked!
Walking out into the clear hallway and shutting the door behind him, the hedgehog looked to the left only to see other rooms with closed doors. That could basically mean anything. From him sharing the home with others or just having a freaking huge house to himself. The thought of actually checking the rooms passed through his mind before he shot it down. Turning the other way, the Mobian focused on the stairs leading down to the first floor. He perked one ear to see if he could hear anything, but nothing resonated from downstairs.
Shrugging, the blue hedgehog strolled down the hall until he got to the stairs. He made his way down them, looking forward to seeing the rest of his house. Reaching the bottom, he looked around what appeared to be a commonly used living room. A television in front of two couches was playing something news related, but the volume was down so low that nothing could be heard.
He then drifted his focus to one of the windows to see the afternoon sun starting to set. This is a weird time to wake up. He thought as he walked over to the clear glass. The Mobian peered outside and hissed soundlessly as the rays pouring inside the room irritated his head a bit more. After he got used to the light, he took in the clearing the house was set in and the surrounding forest. How secluded am I? Surely I don't walk on foot to the closest city, right? Do I even own a car? The hedgehog was about to check out of the front door when a voice coming from the adjacent room paused his movements. Right ear twitching, he turned to glance behind him to see a doorway he had overlooked upon entering the living room.
"This soup is really good, Amy." Around the sound of a full mouth, the blue Mobian noticed that the voice sounded like a young boy's. He cocked his head slightly. Do I have siblings? No…that just feels wrong.
Curiosity through the roof, he slowly and quietly made his way across the living room as another voice filled the air. "Thanks Tails!" So that's Amy and the boy's name is Tails? …those names…I don't remember them. Come on brain! He concentrated on matching faces with the names and voices, but he just couldn't. "Glad you enjoyed it!"
"You've got some skills, hon." Deciding not to just stroll in the kitchen, he sidled up to the wall beside the opening and pressed his back against it. His bad ear was the closest to the opening, but he could still hear pretty well. "Pretty impressive." That voice was a girl's, but it sounded older than the one before.
"Probably better than what two other hedgehogs I know could do combined." A gruff male voice chuckled only to receive a semi-threatening growl in response.
There was laughter until that young boy's voice sounded again. "Speaking of him, I wonder if Sonic's awake yet."
The hedgehog furrowed his brow at those words. 'If Sonic's awake yet?' Am…Am I Sonic? I have to be, unless there is another hedgehog here that's sleeping at an unnatural time. Sonic…it doesn't ring any bells, but I guess…
"I don't know…" That was Amy's voice. "I'm going to go check on him." When Sonic heard the distinguished sound of chair legs scraping against the ground, the hedgehog panicked a bit on the inside. He pushed himself off the wall and half-jogged over to the stairs. Maybe I should've taken the time to figure out exactly how I'm going to confront these strangers who probably know more about who I am than me. It's going to be so awkward when I do…after I spend some time in my room thinking about how in the hell I'm going to do this.
The blue hedgehog was literally a foot away from the stairs when an ear-splitting squeal of his newfound name permeated his working eardrum. Freezing in place, Sonic was glad at the moment that he only got half of the torture a normal person would get. He turned his body toward the horrible noise just in time to get a face full of blinding pink. His body was knocked off-balance and Sonic free-fell for a split second before smacking against the floor, gritting his teeth when the fall aggravated his headache even more.
Grimacing and trying not to focus on his head, Sonic looked up at the very bubbly and energetic girl on top of him. She was yabbering a million miles a minute with her face way too close to his. "…so glad that you're awake and…" Sonic tried to pry her off of him, but she didn't budge at all. Moving on to plan b, the blue hedgehog just glared at the other until she caught the hint. She never did. She continued to pour out words that Sonic had been stopped paying attention to at this point. "…worried and…" Wow this gal can talk. Can someone get her off me please? Please?!
Sonic's silent wish was answered when a gloved hand appeared on Amy's shoulder. The girl trailed off in what she was saying – What a relief – and leaned back to look at the newcomer. When she did, Amy revealed a white-furred bat who was shaking her head slightly at her in exasperation. "Let's go Pinky, up and at 'em. Sonic did just get up from laying down."
Amy laughed sheepishly. "Yeah, you're right." She got up off of Sonic and gave him an apologetic smile. "And I sorta kinda promised him that I wouldn't do that again. Guess I forgot, oops!" You're not the only one. Sonic thought as he sat up whilst rubbing the back of his head, cringing at the place he knew a bruise was going to form. I gotta watch her, since it looks like she does this kind of thing often.
"Sorta kinda forgot?"
"Well…I was excited to see him awake so…"
"It's okay Amy." Hearing a softer voice, Sonic glanced to his left to see a two-tailed yellow fox and immediately connected the Mobian to the young boy voice he had heard before. His name was Tails…pretty fitting. Emerald eyes then shifted downwards to notice that the kit was distributing more weight on one leg, one that wasn't bandaged. Looks relatively new, wonder what happened? Tails played with one of his namesakes. "Just try to hold it in next time, 'kay?"
Amy nodded vehemently before she was nudged out of the way by a red echidna who tisked. "Well since no one else is going to help him up..." He held out his hand for Sonic to take. "I guess I'll do it. Maybe my help will erase fangirling from the list of bad things that happened to him today." The echidna said teasingly to Amy who stuck her nose up.
"I have you know…!"
Sonic blocked her out after that.
The hedgehog hesitated briefly before grabbing the hand still being held out and picked himself up. They're my friends, right? Or something like that? So I'm going to have to trust them sooner or later. Sonic dusted himself off of any specks of dirt or dust that he might have gathered from the fall. He glanced askance at Amy, the action not going unnoticed by another hedgehog in the room.
Shadow stood to the side with his arms crossed, observing Sonic with keen rubies, because he noticed that something was…off about the blue hero. Ever since he came out here after Amy's scream, his eyes had been glued on Sonic, knowing that Faker was acting strange. While Knuckles and Amy were in a heated conversation with Rouge and Tails imputing their own two cents, Sonic just watched, detached from the whole thing. Not saying a word. Come to think of it, not a single sound has come out of Faker's mouth yet…and usually the only solitude from his running mouth was food. And maybe racing.
Was his prediction correct?
Was Sonic mute?
He was about to find out.
"Sonic." Shadow took notice of only one ear twitching as the blue Mobian turned his head the Ultimate Lifeform's way. Shadow narrowed his eyes at this. Hm… He took a step toward Sonic, who seemed uncharacteristically guarded and at the sight of the black hedgehog. Shadow decided to ignore that for now until he got the information he wanted. "Can you speak?"
Sonic, when called upon by another person he didn't know was even in the room, quickly swiveled his head in that direction only to lock eyes with a second hedgehog. However, this one was obviously male and certainly not as uh…lively as the one arguing with the echidna. Well, I know his name now, it's Knuckles. And the bat's name is Rouge I think. Heh, either that or 'bat-girl'.
The blue hedgehog frowned a bit and his body unconsciously tensed at the sight of the striped one. He seemed more dangerous than the others. I don't think dangerous isn't the right word…reserved, maybe? Either way, this one doesn't look as friendly. However, his stature immediately slacked at the question aimed at him. Sonic tilted his head to the side marginally, staring at the black one strangely. Um, shouldn't he know that if he knows me? Unless…something happened recently that caused me to stop talking…
However, before Sonic could think any more about it, Tails and Rouge, apparently hearing the question, drifted from Knuckes' and Amy's banter to focus on Shadow.
"What are you talking about?" The fox asked, looking at Shadow like he had gone crazy. "Of course Sonic can talk! His throat must be just sore…right?" Tails turned to Sonic to see the other looking down at him curiously with a hint of confusion swirling in his eyes. That has to be it! That's why he isn't…talking… With an overly wide smile, Tails repeated hopefully, "Right?"
No. My throat doesn't hurt at all actually. It's just that when I tried earlier, I couldn't form words and no sound escaped my mouth… Sonic furrowed his brow at the fox – wait, Tails – and tilted his head some. So, no one knows that I can't speak? That means something happened to me recently that caused it. And maybe that same thing caused my semi-deafness and headache too? He gave Tails' bandaged injury a shifted glance. Is that a resulting injury also? Ugh, so many questions…let me at least answer the one the kit is asking me.
Sonic shook his head at the smaller yellow Mobian, earning two shocked gasps in return. Rouge put her hand over her mouth. "Chaos…you really can't…"
Shadow sighed lowly. "Then I was right."
"Right about what Shadow?" His name is Shadow? Coulda guessed that myself. Sonic glanced over to see that the echidna and pinkette had stopped arguing. It was a relief, the constant noise in the background wasn't really doing his little headache any justice. Knuckles frowned a bit. "And why does it seem like I let myself into an awkward situation?"
Rouge put a hand on her hip, still staring at Sonic worriedly. "Not awkward per se…"
Tails felt his eyes beginning to water again as the thought of all of this was his fault flashed across his mind. Even though Rouge told him otherwise, he just couldn't shake the feeling. Especially now! "S-Sonic's…Sonic's m-mute!"
Knuckles' eyes widened drastically as he focused on said Mobian. "Wha? Is he serious?!"
The blue hedgehog nodded his head once before soundlessly grunting when a body suddenly – and forcefully – attached itself onto him. Sonic stumbled back a couple of steps only to scowl when he saw that it was Amy clinging onto him, her face pressed against his chest while tears streamed down his front. Oh for goodness sake! Is she always this clingy?
For Shadow, seeing that facial expression that he had never seen the Faker wear before put together pieces of another puzzle he had been speculating about. Sonic had looked at every person here like this was the first time he had seen them in his life. Including Tails, which set off a large round of alarms in his head. And now, Sonic was looking at Amy like she was nothing but a nuisance, not the helpful but annoying and shriek-prone friend that she was.
Rouge, seeing the increasing discomfort on Sonic's face, pulled the pinkette of the blue hero once again. "That's enough of that, Amy. Just calm down."
Amy used her arm to wipe her face. "I-I'm sorry! But it's that I can't believe that Sonic is really m-m-mute!"
"Not only that…" Shadow's serious voice gained the attention of all in the room, including Sonic's who was formerly glancing down at his wet chest in borderline disgust. Ruby's met with emeralds. "You…have amnesia, don't you?"
The room was silent.
A-Amnesia? No! Tails returned his panicked gaze to Sonic, wishing with all of his heart that what Shadow was saying was completely false. He has to remember that he's our friend, Shadow's rival, Amy's long-time crush…my big brother! He can't forget that! He wouldn't!
Well… Sonic thought. I'm not going to lie to them.
He nodded…
…and Tails' stomach dropped.
"No…" The kit started to shake as the dam broke, tears pouring out of his watery eyes. He took a step back from Sonic, not being able to believe what was happening.
Knuckles reached a hand out, about to do anything he could to comfort the kit. This bomb affected them all, but he thought that it hurt Tails the most. "Tails…"
"No!" Using his namesakes for faster movement, Tails quickly left for the kitchen and it wasn't long before the Mobians heard a door slam.
Sonic, sorely confused about the fox's behavior, rose a brow. What's with him? Wasn't that a bit more dramatic than it needed to be? However, no one answered his unspoken question since they were all looking where Tails departed.
Amy, surprisingly, was the first to move. Still crying, but for another reason now, she took a few steps in the kitchen's direction with a wobbly smile on her face. "I'll…" She sniffed. "I'll go check on Tails…" The pinkette left the room more quickly than normal.
No one moved for a moment until Rouge crossed her arms, mimicking Shadow's stance, and turned back to Sonic. She eyed him for a second before sighing at his expression. "About Tails…we'll explain that later, but first we have to figure out what you know. But how are we doing to do that…"
"I got it." Knuckles scouted the room until he zeroed in on scattered blue prints laying on a dresser by the far wall. He jogged over there and took one that wasn't covered with science, also taking the pen sitting with them. He hopped over the back of a couch and plopped down on the cushion. "We can let him write stuff down on this." Knuckles blinked. "…You can still write, right?"
Sonic rolled his eyes and scoffed as he walked over and sat down by the echidna. He took the paper and pen and started to move the latter. A second later, he held it up in the red one's face. Violet irises focused on the blatant 'Duh.' written on the paper. Knuckles shrugged. "Just checking. Had to make sure."
Mhm, yeah. And insult my intelligence while you're at it. Sonic placed the paper back down on his leg which is good enough to write on. He glanced over to Rouge and Shadow who took their places on the other couch in the room. The bat crossed her legs and intertwined her fingers. "Alright. First things first, what do you remember?"
Hm…what do I remember? Sonic tapped his chin with the pen and started to think, but then he was reminded of his headache that was still present for the party. Ignoring Rouge's question for the moment, the blue hedgehog scribbled something down before handing it to Knuckles who looked at him blankly.
Sonic inaudibly sighed before gesturing over to the other two. He could almost see the light bulb going off in the echidna's head. "Right…you want me to read it out loud." He cleared his throat before continuing, "'Before we get to that, do you guys have any pain killers 'round here?'" Knuckles cocked his head at Sonic. "Pain killers? What hurts?"
The blue Mobian pointed to his head. Knuckles, Rouge, and Shadow shared a brief knowing look that Sonic caught. What? Is there some kind of inside thing goin on?
Shadow got up from the couch and approached the exit of the room. "Thinking about it, it would be surprising if his head didn't hurt after all that happened." Sonic hung on Shadow's words. So something did happen, and I guess I'm about to find out what. "The pills are in the garage." With those words, Shadow ran out of sight quickly before arriving again in a time that would be impossible for a regular person.
Sonic gawked as Shadow approached him with the pill bottle and a glass of water that he somehow magically made in that little time frame. Feeling a nudge on his side, he looked at Knuckles for a split second before resuming on figuring out how in the world could Shadow move than fast.
"What's with that look?" Knuckles chuckled. "You act like Shadow's speed surprises you." Sonic nodded excitedly, mind still reeling around what he just saw. Knuckles' smile immediately drained from his face. "Wait…but you know that-" Crap, he doesn't know! So does that mean that he's clueless about his own ability?
Like he had read Knuckles' mind, Shadow nodded subtly to the echidna as he handed over the water and pills. "He wouldn't know." The Ultimate Lifeform returned to his seat. "We'll tell him later after we find out how extreme his amnesia is."
Sonic pouted as he downed the medicine and the accompanying liquid, immediately feeling his headache fading away. Finding out about freaking superpowers is way more exciting than diagnosing me.
"Before we start, how are Amy and Tails?" Rouge asked the black hedgehog.
"They are…coping."
The bat hummed in acknowledgement, knowing that it's going to be a while before they came out again. "Okay, Sonic." Said Mobian perked up at the sound of his name. "First question, when you woke up, did you know anything about yourself?"
Sonic wrote some words down before giving it to Knuckles. "'Nope. I didn't know my name or even what I looked like.' Damn dude…"
"Expected. Next one, do you know any of us?"
After a couple seconds, the guardian spoke again, "'No. Y'all were total strangers. Still are. The only difference between then and now is that I know your names.'"
Shadow hummed in thought. So he doesn't recall anyone, but what about things? It's obvious he knows about everyday stuff, he can write, but he was obviously shocked when he saw my speed. Is Chaos energy foreign to him? Seeing that Rouge had paused in her questions to think about the answers she'd received, Shadow took the reins of the situation. "Do you know about Chaos?"
Sonic blinked, perplexed. What kind of question was that? Who didn't know what chaos was? He scribbled on the paper and when he was done, Knuckles took it.
"'Are you serious? Unless there is a totally new definition of it now, chaos is a state of disorder and confusion.'" The red Mobian shook his head in shock. "That's right, but wrong at the same time." He stared at Sonic, full of disbelief. "Yes, that's what one definition of chaos is…but what about the other one? Where the 'C' is capital?"
Chaos is a proper noun now? Since when? Realizing that he was missing something, something important, Sonic gestured a silent no.
Rouge rubbed her temples. "So Blue has forgotten nearly everything…" An idea then popped into her head. She glanced at the black hedgehog beside her. "Shadow, take out your emerald."
"Are you crazy?!" Knuckles waved his arms in the air, the paper flapping. "Why in the world would you give him that? After what just happened today?!"
"Calm down Red." Rouge said, still looking at Shadow. "I just want him to show Sonic it, to see if it jogs his memory."
Shadow nodded. "Good plan, but I'm not getting any closer to him. We don't know what would happen."
Sonic watched as the black hedgehog reached behind in his quills in curiosity and slight apprehension. Apparently, this gem had something to do with whatever happened to him. He wanted to see it, but he was wary as well. Shadow eventually pulled out a glowing cyan emerald, radiating an abundance of energy.
And for some reason he couldn't explain, Sonic wanted to be as far away from it as possible.
