Right new chapter. This took a while to come together so sorry for the delay. Two things I need to add.
1. Due to Uni, life and my putting together a new story there will probably be longer between updates for a while.
2. I've decided I'm not going to restrict the number of moves each Pokemon can learn but they'll have 6 main ones they use most often. These six moves will appear in bold text in the info sheet found on my author page.
Also just realised I stuffed up the numbering of the last chapter. I have now fixed this up.
Enjoy.
Chapter 12: Preparations and First Round
"If I ever meet whatever god, spirit, all knowing power, fluke of nature or evolution or whatever that though it was a good idea to give a fairly rare Pokémon the move Teleport and only Teleport I'm going to give them a piece of my mind," Brett grumbled as he ran along Route 25 chasing a small yellow Pokémon that kept teleporting away whenever he got close to it. "As if the fact it keeps teleporting away all the time wasn't bad enough the damn thing's doing it while asleep."
"Abra the Psi Pokémon, a pure Psychic type Pokémon with the ability Inner Focus. It sleeps for 18 hours a day. It uses a variety of extrasensory powers even while asleep to sense incoming attacks and teleports to safety before the attack can strike."
After a few more minutes of chasing the Abra Brett got frustrated and took a Pokéball off his belt.
"Hit it with Stun Spore Butterfree."
Butterfree flapped its wings sending a shower of scales at Abra which hit Abra just before it teleported. Brett quickly returned Butterfree to its Pokéball and took a different one off of his belt.
"Zubat use Supersonic."
Zubat opened its mouth and made a clicking sound which caused a series of blue rings to come out of its mouth and travel towards Abra who was able to dodge by Teleporting away. Zubat's third attempt was successful when a yellow energy crackled around Abra when it attempted to teleport and it found itself stuck in the same spot and was hit by the sonic waves. Zubat flew over and landed on Brett's shoulder while he pulled a third Pokéball off of his belt.
"Jigglypuff use Attract," Brett called hoping the Abra was male otherwise this wouldn't work.
Jigglypuff glowed pink and winked at the Abra causing a series of pink hearts to fly towards Abra who tried to use Teleport but only managed to turn itself upside down causing it to drop on its head hurting itself. When the hearts reached Abra they circled it before moving into its body causing hearts to appear in Abra's closed eyes.
"Good work Jigglypuff, let's see him try and teleport away now," Brett said returning Jigglypuff. "Zubat use Bite."
Zubat swooped down on Abra who tried to teleport away but ended up upside down again allowing Zubat to sink its teeth into Abra's leg.
Brett called for a repeat attack and once more Abra was prevented from escaping, only this time it was signalled by hearts appearing on Abra's closed eyelids and it simply remaining still. It seemed Attract had prevented Abra's attack this time.
After Zubat released Abra Brett pulled out a Pokéball that was different to normal ones; this one was blue on top rather than red and had a pair of red stripes wrapping around the top of the ball. This was a Great Ball; it was a more powerful version of the normal Pokéball that had a greater chance of capturing a Pokémon and also didn't require Pokémon to be weakened as much as a normal Pokéball. Brett didn't think a normal Pokéball would have any problems catching Abra but after the frustration of trying to just battle this one he didn't want to give it a chance to get away.
The Great Ball closed around Abra and completed the standard three wobbles that indicated the Pokémon was fighting the capture before pausing at the point where it would normally flash signalling a successful capture. Brett stood there holding his breath waiting for the flash and hoping the Abra wouldn't succeed in breaking out. Just as Brett was fearing the worst the ball flashed and Brett was able to let go of the breath he was holding as the ball was transported to Oak's Lab. Returning Zubat to its ball Brett looked around and realised he had no idea where he was having left the main path to chase Abra.
After an hour of wondering around Brett found himself standing on the outcrop of a cliff with a small house in the distance near the edge of the cliff. Next to the house dwarfing it was a tall lighthouse and off to his right he noticed a path leading down the cliff face to a path he knew led along the river and back to Cerulean City. Deciding to see if the lighthouse keeper would let him spend the night Brett headed off towards the house.
Elsewhere in Kanto a Team Rocket Grunt had just finished giving a report to his Boss who was sitting behind a large desk, his face hidden in shadow.
"Thank you for your report, you're dismissed," the shadowed figure said in a smooth deep voice.
As the Grunt left the office the Boss turned his chair away from the door to look out the window at the cityscape outside. The turning of the chair causing a large feline Pokémon on the floor to look up before laying its head back down and going back to its nap.
"The trainer's description matches the one given by our operatives at Mt Moon," the Boss said. "It seems this little worm may is more meddlesome than I thought. We'll have to keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't interfere any farther into our plans. Kanto and all its secrets and Pokémon WILL belong to Team Rocket and no insignificant little worm will prevent that."
The next afternoon Brett was sitting in the Cerulean City Pokémon Centre going over his plans for the tournament while waiting for his friends to pick up their Pokémon from Nurse Joy. The four were planning to go check out the stadium the Cerulean Tournament would be held in.
Brett laughed to himself at the memory of the man he'd met at the light house the previous day. He was a Pokémon researcher who'd built a suit that he'd hoped would allow him to experience a Pokémon's senses. Unfortunately the costume was shaped like a Lickitung and due to the short arm's on the costume he couldn't unzip himself and had been stuck in the costume all day. Needless to say he'd been more than happy to allow Brett to spend the night after Brett got over his shock of seeing a talking Lickitung and unzipped the suit for him.
Looking up Brett saw his friends approaching and stood up to join them. As the four walked down the street towards the stadium Brett suddenly spun around and stared at the ground where two shadows could be seen despite everyone else only having one.
"Gengar come on out," Brett said staring at the extra shadow. "You haven't been able to sneak up on me in years why would you be able to now."
Some of the other pedestrians gave him funny looks until a largish purple Pokémon a little over half a foot shorter than Brett came up out of the extra shadow an envelope visible in its hand. Several of the other pedestrians recoiled at the large sinister grin on Gengar's face but Brett and his friends had spent enough time around Ghost type Pokémon and this Gengar in particular that it didn't affect them. Brett took the letter from his father's partner and read it quietly.
"Dad wants us to meet him at the stadium," Brett said to his friends.
When the four of them reached the stadium they were met by a tall man still on the near side of middle age with blond hair with a purple bandana around his forehead. This was Morty, Brett's father and the Ecruteak City Gym Leader in the Johto region
"Hi you guys," Morty greeted them cheerfully before turning to Brett. "You need a shave kiddo and a haircut."
Brett ran his hand along his jawline and had to agree his beard probably did need a trim as it was no longer the faint line of hair along his jaw and had started turning scraggly. He didn't even need to run his hand through his hair he could feel it tickling the base of his neck and made a note to get a bad to tie it back with.
"What you doing here dad?" Brett asked.
"I came to watch the tournament seeing as you four have entered," Morty replied. "Come on lets head back to the Pokémon Centre and you can tell me about your journey so far."
Brett and his friends walked into the stadium just in time for the tournament to begin joining a small crowd of other trainers waiting for the two announcers to open the tournament.
"Welcome ladies and gentlemen to thee Cerulean Tournament. I'm Bob Hardy and I'm joined by my fellow commentator Jeff Stevens. For those who don't know this is a tournament for trainers with two badges or less and we've got 64 trainers raring to go."
"That's right Bob, now before we start we must say a big thank you to our sponsor without whom this wouldn't be possible. A big thank you to Silph Co. represented here by acting President Richard Edwards."
Brett looked up and saw sitting in a private box of the stands a man about his father's age with short, light brown hair waving happily. Either side of him sat a teenage girl. One was short with long blond hair down to her waist and looked like she might be a year or two older than Brett while the other was taller than her sister and had shoulder length golden brown hair and looked to be no more than half a year younger than Brett. The second girl held Brett's attention as she sat shyly beside her father in complete opposition to her sister who was lapping up the attention of the crowd and it was only when Diana jabbed him in the ribs with her elbow that he returned his attention back to the announcers.
"The tournament will consist of 6 rounds of matches. The first round will be a one on one battle, the second and third rounds will be two on two matches. The quarter and semi-final rounds will be three on three matches while the final round will be a six on six full battle between our two final competitors to decide the winner. Tell everyone what our champion will receive Jeff."
"Well Bob thanks to Silph Co. our champion will take home a complete set of elemental stones consisting of a Leaf, Thunder, Water, Fire and Moon stone."
On a large screen atop one side of the stadium a picture was shown of five gemlike stones. One was solid brown with a greyish green leaf shape in the centre making the stone look like a fossil of a leaf. The second was a transparent green stone with a yellow lightning bolt in the centre of the stone. Third was a transparent blue stone with white air bubbles throughout. Fourth was a transparent yellow stone with a red, orange and yellow flame like shape in the centre of the stone. The last stone was the distinctive solid blue with coloured veins running across it and glittering sparkles across its surface of a Moon Stone identical to the two Brett already carried in his backpack.
"All matches will be selected by random draw by the computer, so let's draw and start the show."
The headshots of the 64 trainers appeared on the giant screen before rapidly spinning around and scattering into 32 pairs across the screen. Brett scanned the screen and saw he'd drawn the second match of the round. Brett and his friends headed to one of the areas around the very edge of the stadium floor set aside for the competitors not battling and sat to watch the first match.
The first match lasted a while as a Spearow and an Ekans fought a tough and well matched battle which ended with the Spearow taking victory when it surprised Ekans with an Aerial Ace which sent Ekans sprawling across the field. After the two trainers had left the field Brett jumped the barrier and walked over to take his place at one end of the field. His opponent was an older male with close cropped red hair and baggy clothes.
"Now for the second match of the tournament. On my right from Pallet Town we have Brett. On my left we have James from Fuchsia City. Now we hand over to the referee."
"Trainers release your Pokémon," the referee's called his voice echoing through the stadium.
"Poliwag you're up," James called.
A small, round blue Pokémon appeared with a long transparent tail and a black and white swirl on its belly and two small feet poking out from underneath its body.
"Poliwag the Tadpole Pokémon, a pure Water type Pokémon with the ability Water Absorb. Its slick black skin is thin and damp. A part of its internal organs can be seen through the skin as a spiral pattern. The direction of this spiral differs by area. It is more adept at swimming than walking. The Water Absorb ability heals a Pokémon when it is hit by a water type move rather than it taking damage."
"Wasn't planning on using Water type moves anyway," Brett muttered putting his Pokédex away. "Pidgey you're up."
"Poliwag verses Pidgey," the referee called. "BEGIN!"
"Poliwag use Hypnosis," James called.
Poliwag's belly gave off a faint glow and began to undulate causing the spiral on its stomach to appear to spin, then rings flew from the stomach towards Pidgey.
"Pidgey use Quick Attack to dodge," Brett called. "Then use Gust."
Pidgey glowed with a white outline and rapidly flew out of the way of the rings before flapping its now blue glowing wings and creating a small tornado which buffeted Poliwag.
James had Poliwag use Water Gun causing Poliwag to spit a stream of water at Pidgey which knocked Pidgey to the ground. Pidgey used Quick Attack to avoid the Hypnosis attack that followed. Brett was about to call for another attack when he noticed something on the ground and his mind flashed back to Poliwag's two uses of Hypnosis.
"Pidgey dive straight down and use Sand Attack," Brett called.
Pidgey did as instructed and dove straight down. As it neared the ground it stuck its wing out to fling dirt at Poliwag only instead of flinging up a cloud of dust a clump of mud was flung towards Poliwag due to Poliwag's Water Gun having turned to dirt around where Pidgey had been knocked to the ground to mud. The mud splattered onto Poliwag's stomach and when James called for a Hypnosis attack the rings that normally came out of Poliwag's spiral didn't materialise.
"Amazing tactic there; Brett makes use of the mud on the ground to block the hypnotic waves from Poliwag's spiral. How will James go now that one avenue of attack has been cut off?"
As Brett had anticipated due to Poliwag's body shape and lack of neck it was unable to use Water Gun to wash off the mud thus preventing it from using Hypnosis again.
"Poliwag use Bubble," James called.
A spray of bubbles was launched from Poliwag's mouth at Pidgey who tried to dodge the attack but was hit by some of the bubbles that were floating in the air around the field having drifted away from the stream. Poliwag made use of Pidgey flinching from the hit and fired another stream of bubbles straight at Pidgey which hit straight on which sent Pidgey spiralling backwards.
"Now finish it with Icy Wind," James called.
Poliwag opened its mouth which began to glow light blue on the inside then a stream of ice and snow was released towards Pidgey.
"Pidgey use Pursuit to dodge," Brett called.
Pidgey flickered before disappearing and reappearing to the side of Poliwag at which point it struck at Poliwag with its beak. It flew back towards Brett but Poliwag managed to turn quickly enough that it caught Pidgey's tail with Icy Wind causing Pidgey to spiral to the ground. As Pidgey got back to its feet James was about to call for another attack when Pidgey began to glow blue and an ethereal wind whipped up around it.
Pidgey's legs lengthened and its body became larger. Its tail grew longer and wider while its outstretched wings lengthened. Pidgey's head changed shape slightly while its beak lengthened slightly and became slightly more hooked. Finally large crest feathers sprouted at the base of the top of its beak and flowed a short distance down its back. The light and wind faded to reveal Pidgey's new form. As well as being over three times its previous size its tail feathers now alternated red and yellow rather than its previous solid brown and the crest was made of pink feathers.
"Pidgeotto, the Bird Pokémon and the evolved form of Pidgey. Pidgeotto is a dual Normal and Flying type Pokémon with the ability Keen Eye. Very protective of its sprawling territorial area, this Pokémon will fiercely peck at any intruder. The claws on its feet are well developed. It can carry prey such as an Exeggcute to its nest over 60 miles away."
"Well isn't that shocking right in the middle of the battle Brett's Pidgey has evolved into Pidgeotto. Will this help bring Brett to victory?"
"Evolution or not you're still weak to Ice attacks. Icy Wind Poliwag," James called.
As Poliwag launched another Icy Wind Brett decided to try a different tactic rather than dodging the attack.
"Pidgeotto block it with Gust," Brett called.
Pidgeotto flapped its wings and rather than calling up a small tornado an X of blue energy was released. The blue energy clashed with the Icy Wind causing a small explosion to occur where to two attacks met.
"It seems as well as evolving Pidgeotto learned the attack Air Cutter, how will James handle this new development?"
"Pidgeotto Air Cutter again," Brett called.
Unprepared for such a quick follow up and shocked at new move Pidgeotto had shown James wasn't able to get Poliwag to dodge away in time and the Air Cutter attack struck Poliwag straight on and sent it flying backwards at great speed before crashing to the ground once more. It was knocked to the ground again as it tried to get up when Pidgeotto used Quick Attack to knock it back down.
Seeing Poliwag struggling to get back to its feet and low on health Brett decided to end the battle.
"Finish it Pidgeotto Air Cutter," Brett called.
Poliwag had just managed to get back to its feet when the blue cross struck it knocking it backwards once more. This time it didn't get back up.
"Poliwag is unable to battle, Pidgeotto is the winner," the referee called. "The battle and the match go to Brett from Pallet Town."
Brett called back Pidgeotto seeing how tired it was and shook hands with his James thanking him for a tough battle before making his way over to his friends. As he walked back he couldn't help but notice the brown haired girl in the Silph Co. box was cheering for him rather enthusiastically. The smile on his face as he reached his friends didn't go unnoticed by Diana who had also seen the girl cheering for Brett causing her to smile at the chance to tease the normally unflappable Brett over something but quickly pushed the thought to the side as she stepped out for her own battle.
Hope you enjoyed.
Dawriters- Thanks for the review and hope you like the longer chapter.
