Hi everyone! Yes i know I suck at posting BUT this chapter is the longest of the story so hopefully you can forgive me!? Enjoy:)
My mouth drops open and I blink a couple of times to make sure that I am not imagining things. When I open them though, Cassie Corwell is standing right in front of me, standing in ripped jeans, a tank top, and half of her hair pulled up into a top bun.
A few scenarios rush into my mind; for starters I could start screaming, perhaps I could even get a way with a little physical violence before Jacob cut in to stop me, or I could even demand that she leave my room, I could leave the room. As I avidly attempt to make a decision the time ticks away, and in the midst of my indecisiveness, I realize that I am in fact reacting, just not in any real way at all.
Cassie's lips pull up at the corner when she thinks that I am not going to attack her.
I have no idea what to do or say.
"Are you okay?" She asks finally.
In one burst of adrenaline, my brain finally kicks into action. I throw my covers off of me in a rush and then stand up so quickly that I somehow manage to get my feet caught in the fabric and wind up go crashing to the floor.
"Ouch!" I whimper as my shoulder slams into the hardwood.
"Are you… okay?" I hear her ask again, only this time her voice is much less gentle; in fact, her tone is unsteady, almost as if she is holding in a laugh.
I scramble onto my feet and then cross my arms overtop of my chest, which causes an ache to run down my arm and results in a wince.
"You alright Ness?" Jacob asks from his spot across the room. I connect my gaze with his and then narrow my eyes at the obvious way that he is struggling very hard not to laugh.
"I am fine," I speak between gritted teeth.
"Alright," He raises his eyebrows and then pats the sides of the chair. "Can I leave you two alone in here without you killing each other?"
I gasp. "Jacob! No!" I look uneasily between him and Cassie, not able to understand why he is so willing to leave me alone with a girl that we both hate so much. "You can't leave me with her."
Cassie's face drops but I only roll my eyes.
Jacob walks over to me and then kisses the side of my head quickly and softly, but it is enough for me to blush and look at Cassie out of the corner of my eye. Jacob has never kissed me in front of people; well, now that I think about it, he has always kissed me in front of people, but those kisses were harmless, placed on the top of my head when I was being cute or my knee-cap after I fell and those people that always witnessed it were either my family or the pack. Something about him doing it now just feels different, and it may have something to do with the fact that we were just making out about ten seconds ago.
He turns so that his back is to her and lowers his voice. "Do you not want her here?"
"Obviously I don't want her here," I answer much less quiet.
"You don't even want to," He hesitates, as if he is worried about my reaction. "Talk to her?"
My mouth parts and I look him up and down. "I'm sorry, but who are you and what have you done with Jacob Black?"
He chuckles and then pats the top of my back. "You'll be fine."
As he leaves he stops right in front of Cassie, although I can't be sure of what he said. She nods and then smiles at him and he pats her shoulder, much like he had just done to me. A ridiculous burning ball of anger surges through my veins as soon as he exits the room. I don't like the way he touched her, and I don't like the way that she smiled at him either, I especially do not like the way that he touched her.
"Are you two, like, friends or what?" I ask once Jacob shuts the door behind him.
Cassie shrugs. "We've been seeing a lot of each other."
I am punched in the stomach. All the air flies out of me and it hurts and I swear someone must have just hit me but then I realize that no one hit me and I suddenly can't breathe.
I swivel on my heel, anger bubbling up inside of me and threatening to spoil over as I stomp towards the large French doors located on the far wall of my room. I pull them open and then burst outside. I need the air. I need to stop being ridiculously, wholesomely, annoyingly jealous, but as hard as I try I just can't seem to stop.
Why hadn't Jacob told that he had been spending time with Cassie? Certainly it is only due to her being Embry's imprint, but in the weeks we had decided that we wanted to be more than friends, at Jacob's pace of course, Jacob had plenty of opportunities to tell me about her. It's not just that, Jacob was too quick to leave us, too unsurprised by her presence, too comfortable with her; it makes my skin crawl.
"I thought we could talk."
I whip around at the sound of her voice. My eyes land on her, and from the way that her eyes pop open and she takes a hesitant step back, I know that I am not innocent little Renesmee anymore; I can tell the face that I am making and the demeanor in which I am standing, it is how I act when I am hunting.
"Wow," She holds up her hands and I only narrow my eyes into smaller slits. "Relax, please don't go sucking my blood or whatever it is you do."
Now this, this is quite possibly the only thing that she could say to make me forget about my overwhelming desire to tear her apart. "What?" I gasp, immediately straightening. "How do you know about that?"
"Embry told me," She replies, "And Jacob too."
I am surprised I am not breathing fire at this point.
"What do you mean 'And Jacob too'?" I demand.
"Well," She sighs, "It all started when Embry was telling me about being a, you know, werewolf, and of course I asked the obvious 'why' question and then he started talking about vampires and mentioned you and then he started freaking out and yelled for Jake and then Jake started yelling at him and it turns out Embry wasn't supposed to tell me you are a vampire."
I must admit that the only vital piece of information I got from that is her referring to Jacob as "Jake."
"I am extremely confused why you think you're friends enough with Jacob to call him by a nickname."
"Oh," Her eyes widen and then her mouth pulls up into a smile. Cassie's tense body relaxes a little and then she walks towards me. My body stiffens as she leans against the rail right next to her. I sincerely contemplate pushing her over. "So you're jealous."
"I am not jealous!" I exclaim, but my voice is too squeaky and too quick to count as a lie.
"Oh chill out," Cassie chuckles. "I like Embry, remember?"
"It wouldn't matter if you liked Jacob or not," I roll my eyes. "He's mine." I am slightly surprised by the possessive tone of my voice, but Cassie only sighs and then nods her head.
"I know," She smiles at me now, and it takes everything in me not to reach out and wipe that smile right off of her smug face. "I just wanted to clarify so that we had even a chance of having a cordial conversation."
My mouth drops. "Cordial conversation?" I exclaim. "Cassie, you drugged me and tried to take me to a party so that I could be a free-for-all for eighteen year old football players. I have no desire to be cordial with you; and besides, the last time we had a misunderstanding with a guy you practically tired to kill me."
"I did not try to kill you," She explains, and her frustration is practically palpable in the air. "And I don't know why everyone keeps saying that! I was just going to take a few pictures; I don't know, lie to Jacob and say you slept with some twenty year old, that's it!"
I nearly scream at her that I know the truth, but then I realize that, that would require me spilling yet another vital piece of information that I most definitely do not trust Cassie to acquire. The fact that she knows I am a vampire is terrifying enough as it is.
So instead, I try a different tactic. "You don't know what could have happened, Cassie. Anything could have happened. And you know what's even worse? What's even worse is that I didn't deserve it! Not one bit!"
"Well," She holds the word for a bit too long.
"I did nothing!" I scream, and suddenly I am relieved that we are outside so my voice wouldn't echo through my entire house.
"Yes I know," She rolls her eyes. "I know you did nothing, okay? But you could have called me."
I let out a sarcastic laugh. "And said what?"
"Anything!" She exclaims. "We had broken up like two days before that, Renesmee! I didn't know what to think!"
"What do you mean you didn't know what to think?" I scream back. "You dated the guy, you know he's practically a pervert!"
"All I heard was that you two made out outside of the club and then some giant muscular dude started beating him up! I put two and two together okay? All I'm saying is that if you would have just called me and explained what had happened then I wouldn't have had to hear it from some random chick from first period."
I look at her in disbelief. "Cassie you two were broken up," I scream so loudly that we both jump. "It wouldn't have mattered if it had been conceptual even though it wasn't!"
"So what Renesmee it hurt!" Her voice cracks on the last word and the insult that I had just been fostering settles down and slides back down my throat.
I look off of the balcony into the woods expanding as far as my eyes can see and press my lips together. Something mobile and grey catches my eye and my eyes connect with a yellow pair of wolf ones. I clench my teeth together and shake my head; of course Embry doesn't trust me as much as Jacob does not to kill the girl.
I shake my head and then turn back towards her. "Cassie," I begin slowly, softer this time, "Even if that had happened, which, by the way it didn't, okay? He grabbed me and I told him no and he didn't listen so I pushed him away, and then when Jacob and Embry showed up and had seen what happened they freaked out and actually if we're getting technical here Embry was the one to beat him up!"
"Yeah I know," She grumbles and then looks down at her shoes. "I heard the story."
I let out a long breath. "Even if that hadn't been the case, what you did was seriously messed up Cassie."
"Yeah I know that!" Her arms uncross and then dangle at her sides as she struggles with herself not to cry. "I'm sorry, okay?"
I scrunch my eyebrows together. "No," I begin slowly. "No it's not okay."
She sighs and then leans back against the balcony, looking towards the same spot I had only a few seconds ago. I see her eyes catch the same something, or rather someone, who I had discovered lurking, but instead of narrowing her eyes like I had, I can't help but notice hers soften.
"Embry wants me to tell you something," She whispers after a moment.
"Yeah well whatever it is really think about it before you just blurt it out because Embry's an idiot."
Cassie giggles and I have to stop myself from laughing right along with her. The thing about Cassie is that I can hate her all I want, but she had been, dare I say it, my best friend before anything else.
"So, you know the pills that I used," She begins.
I roll my eyes, "No believe it or not I am not up to date and informed about all the current date-rape drugs on the market."
She rolls her eyes. "Would you stop being sarcastic for like five seconds?"
I smash my lips together; that sounds like something Jacob would say. I get the sudden urge to punch her again.
"That wasn't the first time I have used those," Cassie continues.
My eyebrows rise. "What the hell is wrong with you?" I ask with a uniquely even tone.
"No," She flips her blonde hair behind her back and then moans in frustration. "I didn't drug people Renesmee; I was the one who was drugged."
My heart stops beating for a second.
I can't look away from her, which is why I am glad when she breaks our eye contact and nervously looks towards her feet.
"What- what do you mean you were drugged?" I try to keep the obvious fear out of my voice.
Cassie sighs. "Prior to contrary belief I'm not just some evil bitch who keeps a stash of condoms and drugs in my underwear drawer."
I roll my eyes. "Cassie I don't really think this is the right time for you to be getting cynical with me."
"I'm not," She sighs, and then looks nervously back towards the woods. Although I am sure that Embry is still there, I can't make him out anymore. "It was from Mike okay?"
"What was from Mike?" I shake my head. My first thought is that Mike, the same Mike who had practically tongue raped me outside of a club, was the one to give her the pills, instructing her to give them to me and suddenly I am caught in a scheme that is much worse than I ever imagined, but my first thought is almost always missing a part of the story.
"The drugs. He- he drugged me."
"Wh- what?" Disbelief is clear in my tone as I practically gawk at her.
"Yes," She rolls her eyes. "It's true."
"But- but Cassie, why?"
She turns back towards me and finally I am able to see what is truly lying behind her eyes. In all the time I have known Cassie I have never witnessed her look like this; in fact, she looks just like a normal teenage girl. I remember when I had first met her that I thought she was perfect; she has bleached hair and shining white teeth and all the popularity and money in the world. And then I remember realizing that she didn't really have all of her shit together, but I mean she had winded up punching her cheating ex in the face, so I was back to believing that she was the coolest person in the world.
"I don't know," She answers the question that I had nearly forgotten I had asked. A tear that has been condensing in the corner of her eye slides down her cheek and she angrily swipes it away. There is a faint trail down her face of where her foundation has run off. "There were a couple of times when we were dating that I couldn't remember things. Like, I would remember going to a party and then getting mad at him for something and then getting super wasted and waking up without recollection of what had really went down. I would always be with him, though. One time I even woke up in bed with him and some other girl, and then when I freaked out he had acted like I was crazy and said 'Oh, you really shouldn't drink so much, it was your idea! You don't remember?' God, it was disgusting."
My face contorts into disbelief and disgust. I can't believe that he would do that to her; I can't believe that any guy would do that to any girl.
"It just, you need to understand that it wasn't this psycho thought out plan, Renesmee. I found a bag of them when I went over to his place to get my stuff; he wasn't home but his mom said that I could just go upstairs and I found them mixed in his sock drawer." She lets out a sarcastic laugh. "And it all just made sense; everything. I realized right then why I always told myself I wasn't going to drink a lot and was so careful about how many shots I took yet I always passed out and couldn't remember what happened in the morning. I Googled the pills too, just to be sure, I mean they're an exact fucking replica."
"Cassie," I speak quietly, still in my own personal state of disbelief. "I'm so sorry."
"Why are you sorry?" Her voice cracks when she says this. "You didn't do anything. Embry was trying to convince me to go to the bonfire with him and then I mentioned that I wasn't too happy with you at the current moment because of what happened with Mike and he told me that I had it all wrong. He said that it was a misunderstanding and that he took care of it." Cassie rolls her eyes. "It was just weird, okay? It was weird the way he said it and I didn't know about the whole imprinting thing yet. I didn't understand that he had grown up with you always around; I didn't understand what you and Jacob had. I just knew that Embry obviously cared a lot about you, and then I just, flipped out.
I don't know, it's not an excuse and I know that, but suddenly I just got so angry with everyone. I got pissed at Mike for every stupid, shitty thing he had done to me and then I got pissed at you because you were the only friend that I ever had that I actually genuinely liked, and I went to grab my flask to self-medicate a little bit and then there those stupid pills were." Cassie pulls the inside of her cheek into her mouth and then shakes her head. "I didn't even think; I just did it."
Silence hangs in the air between us like a loaded gun.
I am so conflicted with what I know I should feel, and what I do feel. On one hand what Cassie did was wrong, and I can't ignore the fact that if she had been successful, something terrible- no, something worse than terrible would have happened to me. But then again, I can't imagine having been drugged by my boyfriend multiple times, and from the way she is making it sound, she wasn't in the mindset to consent at all, so she was raped before anyone. My head it spinning so frantically that I have to grasp the ledge to hold myself up.
"Are you okay?" She asks after a moment. I look at her like she is certifiable; after everything that she just told me, how on earth could she ever wonder if I am the one that is okay? I catch her staring at the gauze on my neck and then realize what she had meant.
"Oh," I rub overtop of the pad and then wince just a little bit; it is almost healed. "I'm fine. One of the perks of being a half-vampire is that I heal really fast; it should be gone in the morning."
"Oh."
"I just," I let out a long breath and then stare back into my bedroom. For an instant I contemplate calling Jacob back in, telling her to go home, and taking my sweet time to think about all of this, but then I stop. Although I might have been annoyed with Jacob, and okay, I will admit just a tad bit jealous, I do trust him. And I trust Embry too. Both of them had sent her here, so I can't help but reconsider.
"I don't know what to say," I answer finally.
Cassie's face falls, her eyes drop and she nods her head. I have never seen such a gorgeous woman look like such a little girl in my life. It switches something inside of me; I can't explain it, but I suddenly am not angry with her anymore.
"Maybe we should," I pause, for I still can not believe that I am about to say this.
"Hangout."
"Really?" She picks her face back.
"Well, yeah, I mean maybe ugh Jacob and me and you and Embry could, I don't know, do something."
"Like a double date?" She raises one eyebrow.
"If you don't like the idea then trust me you don't have to accept," I roll my eyes.
"No I do!" She answers quickly. "I really, really do."
I smile just a little bit. "Okay then."
"I'm really sorry by the way," Cassie whispers, and for the first time since the whole incident, her voice is so earnest and honest that I have no choice but to stare. I'm not sure what is going on in my head, but then I hug her.
She rests her forehead against my shoulder and I find myself resting mine against her.
"I'm sorry that happened to you," I tell her, and I really do mean it.
"No I'm sorry!" I realize that she is crying again and I can't help myself from rolling my eyes. I wonder if this was how Jacob felt during my 101 mental breakdowns during our switching from friends to something more.
"Please don't cry anymore," I sigh. "I'm so tired of everyone crying."
Cassie giggles and then pulls away from me. I smile at her and then swipe my thumbs across her cheeks. "So," I sigh and try to steer the conversation in a lighter direction.
"How are you and Embry by the way?"
It is as if I watch her light up right before my eyes. Her eyes twinkle a particular shade of diamond I have never seen before, and then her lips pull up into a smile that I am sure she isn't able to help.
"He's perfect," She sighs. "He's- ugh he's the best. He's just so, so, so, so nice!"
I burst out in laughter. "Yes," I gasp out. "Embry is nice. I guess comparing him to your last boyfriend that is a noteworthy quality."
She giggles. "He's just so sweet. I don't understand why he likes me so much."
"Tell me about it," I let out a long breath. "I ask myself that question like 50 times a day."
"Oh please," Cassie rolls her bright blue eyes. "You're the most mesmerizing human being I have ever met. I literally questioned my sexuality the first time I met you, not to sound weird."
"Very weird but I am going to take that as a complement." I nod my head.
Cassie smiles and then flips her hair to the side; she seems to be getting back to her usual self. "Embry and I are great; it's my first like real and healthy relationship, you know? So I feel like I'm just figuring things out, and he's being so patient too." She sighs dreamily. "And looking at those muscles clench when he thr-,"
"Okay!" I gasp, my eyes growing wide. I place my hands on my ears and silently beg her to shut up. "He's like my brother!"
She giggles and then twiddles a piece of her hair between her fingers. "Sorry! You'll understand one day."
I cross my arms overtop of my chest and narrow my eyes at her. "How do you know we haven't yet?" I push my chin higher up in the air. I know that she didn't mean to, but I hate the way that she talked down to me.
Cassie giggles. "Because you'll walk differently, and I don't just mean from the size. Let me tell you now though," She giggles, "You won't be able to walk for a week."
"Oh dear Lord."
"I say wait. There's something so attractive about being innocent."
"Oh yeah?" I shoot her a pointed expression. "And how would you know?"
"Exactly!" She bursts out laughing.
"Well," I let out a very long sigh. "You missed a lot where Jacob is concerned."
Cassie juts her lower lip out. "I know. Jacob told me about your date; he was super nervous."
"Oh." I gulp down unnecessary annoyance and force a smile on my face.
"How was that by the way?"
I raise my eyebrows at her. "Really?" She looks majorly confused until I point to the bandage on my neck.
"Oh," She giggles. "Well how was it before that?"
"Ugh!" Now I am the one to swoon. "Perfect. He's just- he's just Jacob."
"Yes! Exactly! I understand completely. It's just like them!"
"I know!" I practically jump up and down. "The only ones I can ever talk to about this are women who are super married and fertile or a ten year old; I am so happy someone finally understands!"
"Yes!" She squeals and reaches for my hands. "And how they're like 'the entire world shifted when I saw you.' Like oh my God tell me that again and I just might have to start ripping my clothes off right now."
"Yes!" I practically scream, completely forgetting that I am still supposed to be annoyed with her. "Or how he like always touches me; I never noticed it until his smile started making my hormones go crazy but seriously he always touches me."
"But not grossly," Cassie clarifies. "Like cute little touches."
"Oh my God yes!" I shriek.
"Just wait until you start having sex!" Cassie screams and then she winks at me. "Very generous."
"Well Cassie," I jokingly flip my hair and then roll my eyes. "I mean that is to be expected considering our happiness is literally their happiness."
"I'm pretty sure when I orgasm he likes it better than when he orgasms."
"Oh my God." I cover my face with my hands and shake my head. "I did not ever in my life need to know that about Embry."
"Oh please," She rolls her eyes. "You think I don't know about Embry being the biggest playboy of Forks county. I am quite sure you've heard worse."
I shake my head. "My lips are sealed."
"Just like mine are about Jacob's plans for your next date," She raises her eyebrows at me.
My smile drops. "Jacob sure seems to tell you a lot about our relationship," I laugh awkwardly. Just how much is what I am worried about.
"Look," Cassie sighs and then presses her lips together tightly. "Jacob always asks Embry stuff and we've been together nonstop now, so whenever Jacob needed some advice I was always over or he would call and Embry would be at my house and eventually he realized that it is nice to have some girl advice, especially some girl advice from another imprint. It's just- it's not like we're best friends; at first Embry wouldn't leave me alone in the same room with him because he thought that he was going to strangle me! He just- I don't know, I think Embry told him some things."
Something connects inside of my mind. "Oh, Cassie no! Embry didn't tell Jacob anything! It's this weird wolf thing."
Cassie is looking at me like I am insane.
"Look this is going to sound weird, but they have an unusual, ugh, insight I guess you could say into each other's minds."
"What do you mean, insight?"
"Well," I begin uneasily. "Perhaps Embry best explain that one to you." The thought of enlightening Cassie on the fact that every pack member has probably seen her graphically having sex, but don't worry they are respectful because they can't help it, is not something that I wish to get into right now.
In fact, it is something that has always worried me. Thinking about it right now, actually, I suddenly realize that it is likely that some of them at least have seen what transpired that night in my living room. My cheeks turn into tomatoes. Oh no. Oh hell no. Oh hell Jesus Christ no. Did the pack know about me masturbating?
"Hey, are you okay?" Cassie brings me back to the present.
"Ugh," I clear my throat. "Y-yeah. I just- ugh, I'm kind of tired."
"Okay," She smiles happily. "So can I… call you?"
I can't help but smile. "Yes Cassie. You can call me."
After a little while longer of just casual conversation including shopping and a chick flick that we will both be dragging Jacob and Embry to I walk Cassie out. I don't see Jacob or the rest of my family either, although the rest of my family part isn't really that concerning; since they don't sleep, they rarely spend time in the cottage during dark, and that is mainly because they don't want to disturb me, so usually I have the house all to myself, aside from Jacob of course.
I walk back into the kitchen and then sigh when I see a light blue sticky note clinging to the refrigerator.
Covered Embry's patrol. I'll call you in the morning- hope you didn't kill her… Or me.
I roll my eyes. He must have stepped out once we made up and he was sure that my parents were listening in and able to step in before anything got out of hand.
I make myself some pasta and then put a plate together for Jacob, cover it and then place it in the microwave for him, for he is always hungry after his shift. By the time I am done I realize that the sun is actually beginning to rise and I haven't gone to bed yet; at this rate I have been awake for borderline 24 hours.
I brush my teeth and then pull my hair into a loose ponytail to sleep. By the time I am settled underneath the covers and fall asleep, I can hear birds chirping outside my window.
I wake up to the feeling of something familiar and warm. My back is pressed firmly into the imprint of Jacob's body and I mumble as I feel something soft and equally as warm against my cheek.
"Jacob," I mumble, a smile falling upon my sleepy face.
"Hi," He chuckles into my ear.
I stretch my arms high overtop of my head and let out an incoherent, tired sound as I stretch out. I turn into him and then press my forehead into his chest.
Jacob strokes his fingers across the side of my cheek and I sigh into his touch.
"I thought you said we couldn't sleep in the same bed anymore," I sigh.
"I said we couldn't sleep in the same bed together at night. It's two in the afternoon."
"Hey Jake," I mumble, sleep pulling at me from all angles, threatening to pull me back in.
"Hm?" He brushes the hair out of my eyes.
"Did the pack see me masturbating?"
Jacob's hands freeze mid-swipe. "What?"
Thankfully for me, I fall asleep before I can explain myself.
The next time I wake up it is five pm and my phone is ringing. I can barely understand what Maddie is saying to me, but I think the general gist is that she is coming over and I have no say in the matter. I begrudgingly pull myself out of bed and into the shower, taking extra time to lather on the lilac and strawberry shampoo that I know Jacob loves. I only barely remember waking up with him in bed with me last night; I was so tired I doubt I even acknowledged him. I don't even bother drying my hair, but that's nothing new, which is actually a good idea because I notice Megan pull down my drive through my bedroom window right as I leave my room and enter the kitchen.
"Hi Sweetie!" My mom greets me happily. "I'm making pancakes. Are you interested?"
"Um," I raise my eyebrows at her. "When am I not interested?" My mom is an amazing cook.
She giggles and then in one swift millisecond is able to catch the bag of flower that my father threw to her from across the room.
"Dad," I roll my eyes. "Cold you at least act human? Maddie's here."
"Hello Cullen's!" Maddie bursts through my front door as if on cue.
"Maddie!" My father beams happily.
"Mr, Cullen," She curtsies. I roll my eyes. My father has taken an odd liking to Maddie, and I guess that has something to do with the fact that he can read her mind and likes what he hears. Considering Maddie is the one that convinced me to sneak out with her to the first party I had ever been to, I am still trying to figure that one out.
"Hi Maddie," My mom calls over. "How are you?"
"Oh I am just wonderful," She sighs dramatically. "Hey Ness." She plops down on the island stool next to me and then examines the surrounding area. "What's for breakfast?"
"Pancakes. Chocolate chips or plain?" My dad points the spatula at her.
"Mr. Cullen how dare you ask me that question!" She feigns disbelief and again I roll my eyes. I think Maddie likes my parents just a little too much. "Of course I want chocolate."
She turns to me now. "So how was your date yesterday."
"Yeah," My mother leans her elbows on the counter and then places her chin in her hands. "How was your date?"
"Tell us!" My father mocks. I narrow my eyes at him which only causes him to laugh and turn back towards the stove.
"It was… fine." Like I had expected, when I woke up my neck wound was completely healed without even the faintest mark of a scar, so thankfully I wouldn't have to be explaining that part of the date to Maddie.
"Fine," Maddie's face drops. "That sounds awful."
"It was great. Happy?"
"I'm sorry, Maddie does this terrible explanation please you?" My mother asks her sarcastically.
"No it does not, does it please you?"
"Oh my God," I roll my eyes. "It was wonderful. Okay?"
"Well what did you do?" Maddie pushes.
"We went to this super cute little restaurant by the beach. It was so cute; I've never even seen it before, I didn't even know it existed actually. And then we ate and talked and,"
"What did you talk about?" Maddie interrupts.
"Stuff?"
"What kind of stuff?" She rolls her eyes.
"Let me guess," My father begins, but I narrow my eyes at him, for I know that he already knows.
"We talked about a lot of things," I interrupt him before he can spill all my secrets.
"We just, I don't know- it was a date people, okay? We talked about normal things that people talk about on dates."
"Okay so what did you do after dinner?" My mother inquires.
"Oh," I perk up. "We actually went down the beach to this party."
"Party," Her face drops.
"Not like that mom, don't worry. It was like a, bash I guess you could say. There was a DJ and a bonfire and a ba- band. There was a band," I correct myself before I actually say bar.
"That sounds amazing!" Maddie moans. "I want a Jacob."
I can't help but giggle, for this is not the first time she has admitted this to me. "Oh my God!" She suddenly exclaims. "Mr. and Mrs. Cullen, did I forget to tell you the terribly horrible and idiotic thing your daughter did to me not too long ago?"
My dad laughs to himself and I am betting what she is about to say is going to be funny.
"I don't think so," Mom chuckles.
"Well," She grabs the sides of the countertop to hold herself up as she flips her hair. "I ask her nicely, very nicely if I may add, to set me up with one of the thousand hot muscular friends of her boyfriend, and although I was broad, I did mention something about his very hot best friend; hear that everyone? Best friend, key word. And then at school the next week I come to find out that Cun- Cassie is dating him! Can you believe her?"
I roll my eyes. "Cassie I didn't even introduce them! I can't help that he liked her!"
"And here I am," She continues with a sigh, ignoring me. "Boyfriendless and lonely. Terrible best friend if I do say so myself."
I roll my eyes for a second time. "You are so dramatic."
"Easy for you to say! You're dating the hottest boy- no, man I have ever seen!" She practically screams.
Mom giggles and nudges dad's shoulder but he just shakes his head. "You were supposed to be a boy you know."
Now I am the one to laugh.
"So go on, tell me more about this date." She raises her eyebrows a few times at me and I giggle.
"Well, I mean there's not much left to tell. We just came back here after and hung out until-," I stop short. My eyes grow wide and I slam my jaw back together.
"Until what?"
"Ugh," I clear my throat awkwardly. "Until nothing," I clarify, though my voice is too high and uncomfortable; she can tell I am lying.
"Until what?" She shrieks. "Is it bad?"
"You're going to be mad," I speak timidly.
"Why would I be mad?"
"You're going to be," I mumble to myself.
"Just tell me!" Maddie demands.
"Well," I giggle nervously. "So after the date we were, hanging out, here and then,"
"And then what? Woman I need details!"
"Well, and then Cassie showed up."
Maddie's mouth drops. Her eyes grow wide and she almost entirely freezes. "What?" She shrieks in a voice that is so loud it makes me jump back.
"Yeah," My voice shakes.
Maddie grabs my wrist and I go flying forward. "Oh my God!" She shrieks. "Did you hit her? Punch her? Scream at her? Tell me I didn't miss anything good!"
"Well," I clear my throat and try to look anywhere but at her. "It didn't necessarily go in that direction."
She practically throws my arm back at me. "Tell me you didn't."
I bite the side of my cheek.
"Renesmee," Maddie moans. She rests her forehead against the countertop and doesn't even move as my dad slides a plate of three pancakes right next to her. "What is the matter with you?" She finally picks up her head right as I take my first bite. "Didn't we agree that she's insane?"
"You agreed that." I dump way too much syrup onto my plate.
"Oh, I'm sorry, you must be forgetting the part where she drugged you."
"I haven't forgotten," I mumble.
"Then what is wrong with you?" She demands.
"It's- it's complicated," I sigh. I feel as if I am defending an abusive relationship.
"Complicated?" She wails. "Mr. Cullen, do we like Cassie?"
"No," My father answers quickly. "No Maddie we do not."
"Hm, interesting. And Mrs. Cullen, do we like Cassie?"
"Well I can't say she's my favorite person in the world," My mother sighs.
"See!" Maddie points her finger at me. "You're the crazy one! You need an intervention or something!"
I can't stop myself from rolling my eyes. "Shut up and eat your pancakes."
"I've lost my appetite," She crosses her arms overtop of her chest.
I sigh and let my fork drop onto the counter. "Alright," I swivel towards her. "If I promise to try as hard as I can to get you a date with one of Jacob's, as you say, 'muscular model friends,' would you leave me alone about this and eat your breakfast?"
Her eyes shoot up in surprise. I can tell from the way that she had to stop herself from saying an immediate "no" that she is trying really hard to resist this offer. Thankfully though, I made one that she can't refuse.
"Fine," She narrows her eyes at me. "But I'm the best friend."
I can't help but giggle. "Of course you are. You would never drug me."
"Exactly." Maddie takes the syrup from out of my hands and puts even more than I put on her own plate, a happy smile on her face at the promise of a date; now I just need to figure out how to make that happen.
"So, not that I'm complaining, but why are we eating pancakes for dinner?"
I giggle to myself; last night is not something that I would really care to explain. "I couldn't sleep last night. This is my breakfast."
"Oo," She swats at my arm. "Thinking about Jacob?"
I roll my eyes.
"Think we could use the hot tub?" She perks up.
"When have I ever said no to anything hot?"
My dad rolls his eyes, my mom giggles, and Maddie just doesn't understand.
We spend about a half hour in the hot- tub before Maddie gets a call from her mom demanding that she come home because I guess she found some type of stash hidden behind her sweaters. When questioned she claimed it had something to do with alcohol, but I swear on the phone I heard something about a vibrator over the line, which makes sense considering her mother is practically the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. Thankfully I do not have that problem with my vampire parents, although I don't think they would totally be cool with finding a vibrator in my closet. How would I even get my hands on one of those? The thought makes me blush.
She practically sprints out of the hot tub, not even bothering to towel herself off and instead just throwing her tee-shirt on and sprinting in her cheeky bikini bottoms out to her car.
I sigh and rest my head against the side of the hot tub. Since I am still really tired, I wind up dosing off, but eventually I wake when I hear something ruffling to my left.
I sit up quickly when I see something move a little off in the distance. Oh no. My first thought is that the vampire from last night is back. I am too frozen in fear to speak; I scream in my head for my dad, but then I realize that he and my mom went hunting, and unless he is listening for me, which he probably isn't, he won't hear me. I slowly stand up.
"Hey."
"Ah!" I scream and jump up in the air. The movement causes my feet to begin slipping on the slick floor of the hot tub, and before I know it I am crashing against the water. I gasp back up and then rub the water out of my eyes.
"Nessie! Are you okay?" Jacob is suddenly on the side of the hot tub.
"Oh," I finally get all the water out of my eyes and then smile nervously at him. "Yes."
Jacob presses his lips together to keep from laughing so tightly that it almost looks painful. I narrow my eyes at him. "Don't laugh at me!" I demand.
Air slips between his lips and then he bursts out into the laughter that I knew he was holding in.
"I'm sorry," He speaks between gasps. He clears his throat and then appears to get ahold of himself. "I'm sorry."
I narrow my eyes at him. "Are you?"
"Not at all." Jacob smiles guiltily and then leans his arms against the side of the pool. I am distinctly aware of Maddie's description of Jacob and his friends: muscular and models; seems about right. I tear my gaze away from his muscles and then smile at him innocently, hoping that he didn't notice.
I latch my hands against the edge of the hot tub so that I can stretch out and the rest of my body can float up. "Hey Jacob," I kick my legs underneath the water.
He laughs for some reason. "Can't wait to hear this."
"What?" I ask, clearly confused.
"Nothing. What Ness?"
"When did you get your tattoo?"
He seems surprised by my question, and then he flexes his arm to look down at his tattoo, almost like he had forgotten about it. "Oh, this?"
I raise my eyebrows. "Do you have other tattoos that I don't know about?"
He smiles. "Actually I have a tramp stamp."
I roll my eyes. "Everyone in the pack has it, right?"
"Yep," He smiles that award winning, crooked smile at me. "I got it a few weeks after my first shift."
"Hmm."
"What?"
"Oh, nothing," I shrug.
"Why are you wondering about it now? I've had it your whole life."
"I don't know. I guess I never really noticed it before." While that isn't necessarily true, I must admit that I hadn't cared as much about it before I found him extremely sexually attractive. The tattoo is hot, really, really hot, hence my interest.
"What did you do today?" He questions with a sigh.
"Slept," I giggle. "And then Maddie came over."
"About that," Jacob smiles at me.
"About Maddie?"
"No, about the sleeping." Jacob swipes a piece of hair behind my ear and I smile deviously.
"Oh, yes the sleeping. I am a little confused; isn't one of the ground rules that we can't sleep together anymore."
"You asked that when you woke up and I told you that, that only counts when it's nighttime."
I roll my eyes. "I am beginning to think that these rules you come up with are put in place specifically to benefit you."
"Right," He rolls his eyes. "You have no idea."
"I hate when you say that to me," I moan.
"You're very beautiful though." Jacob kisses the top of my head and I sigh happily to myself. Although I know that was a cop-out, it works none-the-less.
"So what about last night?" I rest the side of my head against the hot tub and Jacob's fingers find their way into the side of my hair. He keeps running his fingertip behind my ear over and over again, and it feels so good that I remain completely still, hoping that if I don't move he will never stop.
"Oh, about that," He laughs gently from over top of me. "Well I'm not going to repeat it."
"Repeat what?" I speak dreamily.
"Nothing."
"Jacob," I moan.
"It'll embarrass you," He sighs.
"I always embarrass myself."
He laughs and I smile.
"Well, I guess I could tell you. I am also very curious as to what you're talking about so maybe you could explain."
I sigh. "Hit me."
"You asked me if any of the pack members saw you masturbating."
I gasp and jump away from him. "I what?"
Jacob's eyes are wide and his hand hangs the air where he had been stroking behind my ear. "It's not a big deal Ness, I think you were sleeping and didn't know what you were saying."
The problem though, is that I most definitely do know what I had been saying. I had been worrying about the pack seeing Jacob's thoughts about that one very interesting night when the power went out, ever since Cassie left. I fell asleep worrying about it, which is why I shouldn't be surprised when sleeping me decided to just blurt it out.
"Ugh, yeah," I bite the corner of my cheek and feel the heat rise to my cheeks, which is literally insane because I am in a hot tub for crying out loud, it should be impossible to blush.
"Wait." I wince. Jacob knows me dangerously well. "Did you mean something by that?"
"No," I answer quickly, shaking my head frantically.
"Did- did one of them walk in on you?" His eyes suddenly blaze a thousand shades of fire and my eyes grow wide.
"What? Jacob, no!" I exclaim. "I mean, they didn't walk in on me."
Jacob scrunches his eyebrows together in this rather adorable way as he tries to figure me out. "The only person who has seen you is me," He speaks softly.
My entire face is a tomato now.
"Exactly," I mumble.
"I don't under-, oh." Jacob's realization practically plays out across his face in an cringe-worthy movie. I bite the corner of my lip and divert my gaze to my hands moving underneath the water.
Jacob places his finger underneath my chin and then pushes it up so that I am staring at him. While I expect for him to be laughing at me, or at least finding some humor out of this, he instead is looking at me with understanding. His mouth is pulled up into a small smile and his eyes are squinted slightly as he stares at me. "Nessie."
"What?" I gulp. I wish I could at least pretend to act cool and not panic.
"I don't want you to ever worry about that. You never need to be embarrassed. What I see is only for me."
I bite the inside of my cheek. What he sees is only for him? Jesus Christ that was embarrassingly sexual.
"I know," I begin nervously, "It's just, I mean you can't really help it."
"I can help it," He corrects me, his jaw tensing before my eyes.
"Not really," I roll my eyes. "I sometimes try to with my dad but it doesn't last that long. And I'm not showing pictures."
Jacob lets out a long breath but doesn't move his finger from my chin. "It's not like that, Ness. Everyone understands; they're all respectful. It's not our choice that we all have this connection, but even more than that they all know it isn't your choice."
"What do you mean?" I ask quietly.
Jacob sighs. "Do you think I want to see my sister like that?" My eyes widen. "The first time I saw Paul think it I wanted to kill him, and then I wanted to throw up. It's not fair for Paul's thoughts to be out in the open when they should be personal, but it's even more unfair to Rachel. She doesn't want Embry or Quil or especially me seeing her like that, seeing her doing something that only Paul was ever supposed to see. We're respectful because we have to be."
"So," I begin slowly, trying to digest what he had just said and try not to imagine Rachel and Paul having sex. "You're basically saying that they've all seen it but they won't say anything about it because it's disrespectful."
"No," Jacob shakes his head. "I am saying that we try really hard not to think about it in wolf form, but if we do then it is the other guy's responsibly to get out of there or think about something else, or tell him to knock it off."
I bite the corner of my lip. "Well, do you think about me?"
Jacob's lips pull up at the corners. "Of course I think about you; I always think about you Nessie."
"No!" I giggle, "I mean, do you think about that night?"
Jacob's finger freezes underneath my chin. He shakes his head and then licks his lips; it sends a shiver down my spine.
"Nessie," Jacob sighs, "That's not appropriate."
"I'm just wondering if I need to worry about Brady seeing me naked."
"I have never seen you naked," Jacob corrects me.
"Close enough."
"Not at all. Are you good with this whole pack mind reading thing? I want to make sure you're comfortable; I don't want you being embarrassed or feeling bad or disrespected."
I can't help but giggle. "Why do you always worry about disrespecting me? You're the most respectful and amazing guy I've ever met."
"Nessie," He smiles and then takes my face between his hands. He tilts his mouth towards mine and then he presses his perfectly plush and hot lips into my own. I sigh into the kiss, and I feel him smile as he pulls away.
"You know," He begins with a sigh, taking a piece of hair between his fingers and running up and down the strand. "I would do anything to make it so that I was the only one to ever see that. It's not fair to you."
I smile at him, a real smile and not a nervous one this time. "I don't deserve you."
"That's not true," He begins, but I cut him off.
"No seriously Jake!" I push across the hot tub and then rest my knees on the seat inside the tub and sit up. I reach for his collar and then cling onto it. "I have never deserved you, and you can try to argue with me all you want but you dedicated your life to me when I was a newborn; no newborn deserves that kind of loyalty, and I know this because I hadn't done anything to deserve it yet because I hadn't done anything at all."
Jacob laughs and then wraps his arms around my back. "I think you're pretty great. I mean, look at you." He runs his eyes up and down my body and I squirm underneath his gaze.
"Jake," I complain. He brings his eyes back up to mine and then kisses the side of my head.
"You don't think this is too… babyish?" I motion towards my one-piece.
Jacob bursts out laughing. "No Nessie, I do not think that is too 'babyish'," he rolls his eyes.
I can't help but giggle. "I don't know," I sigh. "I only have one bikini and the only time I ever wore it was when you took me and forced me to get high."
"What?" Jacob exclaims. "I never forced you to get anything! And I do remember that bikini; I definitely enjoyed it."
"More than this one?" I look down at the simple black one-piece that goes down in a V down to my belly-button, showing a teensy-bit of mid-cleavage, the sides coming up high on my hips, and then covering just about everything else.
"I like both," Jake answers slowly. "But I think I like this one better."
My eyes shoot open. "Really?"
"Yeah," He smiles reassuringly at me. "You're classy Nessie; it's one of the things I like best about you."
I sigh. "Getting it on in my living room with myself isn't very classy."
Jacob throws his head back in laughter. "Awe, you made it look classy."
I giggle and then wrap my arms around his neck. "So you don't think that I should only wear bikini's from now on?"
"Nessie," Jacob looks at me with confusion. "You can wear whatever you want; you look amazing in everything, and besides, don't dress yourself for anyone other than you. Wear what you want to wear."
I smile a wide, honest smile. "I think I like this swimsuit," I nod my head.
"I think that's great."
Jacob pushes me towards his chest and I tighten my arms around his neck. "Oh," he begins after a moment, and I relish in the feeling of the vibrations off of his chest.
"How did your talk with Cassie go? Embry called me pretty psyched."
Ifreeze. My hands stay on the back of his neck as I slowly pull away from him. "Jacob Black."
His eyes widen. "Am I in trouble?"
"Why didn't you tell me that you were hanging out with Cassie?"
His mouth opens but then nothing comes out. I urge him to continue with my eyes. "I- I didn't- It's hard to explain."
"Well I would like an explanation. It was," I shake my head and look towards the water. "It was embarrassing Jake. She was saying all this stuff about what you've been saying and how nervous you've been about me and acted like you all were best friends."
Jacob cocks his head to the side and squints his eyes at me. "It wasn't like that Ness."
"Then what was it like?"
Jacob sighs. "It's got a lot to do with the imprint mind reading like we were just talking about."
I gasp away from him. "You've seen them having sex?"
"What?" He reaches for my arms and wraps them around his neck again. "No. Nessie that's not what I meant."
"That's disgusting," I mumble, suddenly not able to look at him again.
"Nessie," Jacob let's out a long, long breath. "All I meant by that is that it is impossible to hate her when I can see Embry's thoughts. He loves her Nessie, like I love you, and he knows things about her that changes things, that changes how I and everyone else views her; seeing the way that he feels about her makes it impossible to hate her."
I let out a long breath and then roll my eyes. "Well that's all fine and dandy but I honestly just can't stop thinking about you seeing her in the heat of passion."
Jacob kisses my forehead. "And why would that bother you? Hm? You're the only girl that I think about."
"Don't be ridiculous," I roll my eyes.
"What do you mean?" He kisses both of my temples. "You're the most beautiful, the smartest, the funniest, the cutest, the prettiest, you have the nicest hair."
I can't help but laugh. "You think I have nice hair?" I giggle.
"Of course I do," He runs his palm overtop of my head and then down the length of my hair. "You have beautiful hair. And it always smells good."
I giggle, remembering my rinse and repeat action in the shower earlier for this very reason.
"Alright," I pull away. "That whole thing is really fucking weird and I don't think I'll ever be cool with it but I think for right now I'm okay."
"Shhh," He looks at me with a scolding expression.
I roll my eyes. "You, Jacob Black, taught me most of the cuss words that I know."
He rolls his eyes. "It's not my fault that you had the mind of a fifteen year old at age five. You were so curious about everything."
"Especially sex."
Jacob's chest practically heaves he is laughing so hard.
"Do you remember that one time I asked you what a blow-job was in front of the entire pack and their girlfriends?"
He laughs even harder. "I could honestly never forget that. But shush, don't talk like that." He laughs once more into my ear and then kisses the side of my head. "Hey, you're okay about the whole wolf-telepathy thing, right? I feel bad."
I sigh. "Talk to me when we start having sex."
"Renesmee Cullen!" He gasps. "Would you stop being so forward?"
I giggle. "Excuse me! If you're insisting that we go at your pace then I must insist that I can talk about whatever I want to talk about."
Jacob shakes his head. "You are not as good of a girl as everyone thinks."
"Cassie disagrees," I smile smugly. "In fact, she told me to wait for a while longer because there is something alluring about being innocent."
"I can't say I disagree with that," He smiles down at me.
"See this is why I am so confused," I shake my head. "A miserable month of my life was spent with you demanding that I go out with other guys so I can be a normal teenage girl yet you just said that you find me more attractive innocent."
"This is a very inappropriate conversation," He kisses the tip of my nose and tightens his arm around my neck.
"How?" I chuckle. "We are dating, right?"
"Well, I mean we've been on one date; I'm not sure if I'm going to ask you out again."
I roll my eyes. "Oh come on! I promise that next time I will even go as far as to not get attacked by a crazy vampire."
"Wow, that is definitely tempting."
I giggle just as I hear a wolf howl in the distance.
"Shit." Jacob's arms tighten around me and then suddenly he is pulling me out of the pool.
"What- Jacob?" I giggle.
"Renesmee," He grasps his hands tightly on my shoulders and then looks at me straight in the eyes. "Go inside, now."
"Wh- what?"
"Is anyone in your family home?" He asks frantically.
"My- I- I think Alice might be. The rest are hunting."
"Good," He rubs my now cold skin and then looks around nervously.
"What's going on?" I ask, panic growing in my chest.
"Probably nothing," He answers, but from the expression on his face I really don't believe him. He notices my worry and then forms his face into a smile, although I can see that it is forced. "Because of the, ugh, attack," His finger strokes the spot on my neck where I had been bitten and a shiver goes down my spine. "We've been searching like crazy, just trying to make sure that we're safe, that Forks is safe. I just- can you go inside please? I'm going to go check it out; I'm sure it's just a scent or something small, but I need to go. Go find Alice, okay?"
I nod my head quickly and then rush towards the door.
"Hey," He calls after me, and I stop to look back. His mouth is pulled up into that crooked grin, and it immediately calms me down. "I like that swimsuit even more from the back."
I blush and then rush inside.
OKAY guys that was my favorite chapter of the entire story. PLEASE let me know what you think!
I'll update as soon as I can! PS: I think I'm going to go back to older chapters and edit them up; I won't change anything too drastically, but there are a few scenes that I would just like to fine tune:) I will let you know if anything changes!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
