Chapter 13 - On Air
I sat backstage, checking my stock accounts on my phone. We were waiting for our time to go up for an interview. I heard a voice in my head. "Are you nervous?" My mom asked. I could see a few scales on the back of her neck, but it seemed like that they were needed to use her telepathy.
"Not particularly. Remember, I was in Model UN in high school. I'm used to this kind of thing. Why, are you?" I replied, looking back at my tail. Just like Kaylee had said, my tail was waving back and forth.
"No." She answered suspiciously quickly. I gave my mom a look. "Yes. This is really important, and I've only done things like this for small conferences."
"We'll be fine," I answered.
"Are the three of you ready?" One of the assistants came up and asked us.
"Yes, we are." My mom said. They led us out on stage, as we took our seats. I shifted around, trying to get my tail into a comfortable position.
"So, how are you doing, Chase?" The host asked me.
"I'm doing well, thank you."
"Now, I'm sure there are a lot of questions that our audience would like answered, but why don't we start from the beginning? How did you become half-Lugia?"
"Well, the short version is that we were poisoned as kids, and the only way to save us was to turn us into half-Pokemon," I said.
"We?"
"Yeah, there are 8 of us. The article mentioned that, right?"
"Yes, now that I think about it, it did. Alright, the next question is fairly simple. What's it like to be half-Lugia?"
"Um, that's … a little hard to describe. When I'm the ground, I don't feel that different than I did as a human, but when I get into the water or air, it's a pretty amazing experience. Mainly, I just need to make sure I don't accidentally trip someone with my tail, it has a mind of its own sometimes."
"It does sound amazing. Now, this next question is a little more charged. Some people are worried about half-human, half-Pokemon beings like yourself causing destruction. Do you feel that that's a fair assessment?"
"I can understand people's fears, but we're, for the most part, less powerful than our Pokemon counterparts. Concerning raw power, a Lugia would crush me in a fight."
"So, you're not dangerous?"
"I'm saying that people shouldn't be worried about us. Also, we're teenagers, we're not going to conspire to take over the world or something." I said.
"That's … a fair point." The host looked almost embarrassed for asking.
"Do you mind if I address the audience?" I asked the host.
"I don't see why not." The host
"Alright, for everyone at home, you should know something important. We've been like this for about a week and a half. We're just as new to this as everyone else is. Also, like I said before, we're teenagers. Don't be afraid to come up and talk to us. Some of us look intimidating, but we're somewhat friendly." I said. "Just try not to insult us."
"This question comes to us from a viewer. What do you do in your free time?"
"Mainly sparring. It's a great way to exercise, and keeps my reflexes sharp. I also read up on any scientific articles, " I answered. I checked the aura around me, just in case. Nothing looked out of the ordinary.
"What kind of education are you planning to get?" The host asked. This question threw me for a loop because I hadn't actually considered it.
"To be completely honest, I haven't even thought that far. But, I got the chance to teach a class around here, and I really enjoyed it so I might get a degree in Education. Really, I'm still trying to figure out my life right now so anything could happen." I answered. I felt a large disturbance in the air. Immediately after, I saw a prediction of a Charizard rush in and attempt to attack us. I got up off the couch, and yelled: "Get down now!"
My parents immediately covered their heads, while the host looked in A Charizard burst through the doors, its claws outstretched. I could feel the Shadow energy flowing off it. "Just my luck." I caught the door with my telekinesis, placing it off to one side. The Shadow Charizard charged me, its claws glowing with draconic energy. It slashed at me, as I dodged to one side, running around it. It continued to lash out with its claws as I led it away from anyone who could get hurt. I focused intently on the Charizard, teleporting us both far away from any people. Unfortunately, I had accidentally teleported the two of us into the air, where the Charizard took full advantage of the situation by grabbing onto me, and completely catching me in a full lock. We plummeted to the ground head-first, as I struggled to get free. I charged a Hydro Pump in my mouth, aiming it at the ground. We slammed into the ground, the water managing to soften the blow somewhat. I slowly tried to get up, my head confused from the impact. The Shadow Charizard began charging a Hyper Beam in it jaws, as I sought to get out of the way. I stumbled to my feet, desperately trying to get out of the way of the Hyper Beam. Just as the Shadow Charizard was about to fire, a fist with dark energy surrounding it came out of nowhere and punched it, sending it flying.
"You okay?" The voice asked. I recognized it from our battle a few days ago. It was Theo, the Tyranitar morph I had fought when I was trying to rescue my parents. "Need a hand?"
"Yeah, I'd appreciate any help I can get." He helped me up to my feet. I spit out some blood from my mouth. The Shadow Charizard had recovered from Theo's Sucker Punch. I gathered the water from my earlier attack and blasted it at the Charizard, keeping it at bay. I rushed up to the Shadow Charizard, attacking it with palm strikes while also using the water around me as a weapon to keep the Shadow Charizard from counter-attacking. I saw fire begin to build up in the Charizard's mouth, and I tried to dodge back. As the Charizard fired a Flamethrower at me, Theo moved in front of me, his scales easily blocking the heat. I short-teleported behind my opponent and launched the water into the Charizard. The water collided, hitting the dragon with a hiss, as the massive flame coming from the Charizard's mouth was put out and the Charizard went flying. I gathered the water that hadn't evaporated and returned it to my side, preparing it for another attack. The Charizard recovered, and I could feel the bloodlust coming from it. It took to the air, blue flames spiraling around it. I formed another Hydro Pump in my mouth, and fired it, launching the water into the air directly above me.
The Charizard launched it's Flare Blitz, rocketing towards me. I could feel the heat radiating off the attack, as I teleported above the flaming dragon. It landed, sending a massive explosion of heat everywhere. I could feel the water around me begin to spiral, as I formed it into a makeshift water tornado. I let the tornado loose, a massive deluge of water falling towards the Charizard. It hit the Charizard directly, causing water to blast everywhere. I controlled the water around the Charizard, using the water pressure to force the barely conscious Charizard into the air. As the Charizard fell, I saw three white rings appear around Theo. The white rings disappeared, leaving two rings of sharp rocks in their place. The rocks had gathered around the Charizard before they crashed into the dragon. I felt the Charizard's aura begin to fade as it lost consciousness. I landed on the ground, as I used my telekinesis to slow my fall and slowly set the Charizard on the ground. "Honey, are you okay?" My mom said, as my parents ran up, panting. "We heard a battle going on over here."
"Yeah, we're ok. We'll need to get this Charizard a purification, though, it's a Shadow Pokemon." Now that I wasn't worried about dying, I noticed the multitude of cameras pointed at me. "Um, hi?" I said, weakly waving at the camera.
"I can certainly see the value of sparring if it allows you to do feats like that. Unfortunately, that's all the time we have for today. Goodbye everyone!" The host said as the crew turned off their cameras. Once she had confirmed that the cameras weren't rolling, she said, "I can't thank you enough for leading that Charizard away from any populated areas."
"No problem."
"What was that attack you did at the end? It didn't look any attack I've ever seen."
"Oh, um, that was just me making something up on the fly. It doesn't really have a name." I said. My throat felt parched from all the water I had used between the two Hydro Pumps I had fired.
"I hope things turn out well for you and your friends."
"Thanks, I appreciate that," I said. "Theo, you doing anything after this?" I yelled back to him while also using my aura sight to look around the backstage for my backpack.
"No, I don't have anything planned, why?" He said as I found my backpack on one of the backstage couches.
"You want to come over to our house?" I asked, teleporting the backpack above me, where I grabbed it out of the air. I had become fairly proficient at teleporting small objects, but transporting fully grown Pokemon on the fly was bound to have mixed results. I made a mental note to ask my mentor for some advice with quick teleports.
"Sure, I could come over for a few hours," Theo said, looking down at his phone. A portal appeared below us, transporting us back to the house.
"How-?" Theo asked.
"Chase isn't the only one who's been getting trained by a Legendary. I've been training with Palkia for the last few days myself, portals like this are easy." Kaylee said.
"You kids have fun, we'll be outside going for a swim." My mom said, already in her half-Lugia form. The to
"Is this the Tyranitar who was on TV?" Kaylee asked.
"You were watching?" Theo asked.
"Of course. We wanted to check if you needed help." Jake answered.
"And you didn't help?" I asked.
"You didn't need help," Jake responded.
"I was about to take a Hyper Beam to the face!" I shouted.
"Kaylee was about to form a portal in front of you," Jake said. "By the way, nice finisher at the end."
"Thanks," I said, still a little annoyed.
Ricky rushed down the stairs and asked, panting "Can we spar?"
"Why?"
"I want to practice my cutting accuracy, and your Stone Edge would be perfect to practice against," Ricky said.
"If you think you can do it, I won't stop you," Theo said as Ricky led Theo to the training area. I grabbed a glass, and filled it with water, chugging the water down as quickly as possible. I heard gigantic waves crashing outside, and when I checked outside, I found my parents in the ocean flinging blasts of water at each other. "A little swim? As if." I thought to myself.
"You two enjoying yourselves?" I said amused, as my mom sent a water whip towards my dad.
"Yes." My mom said.
"Oh, you're going to get it now!" My dad said, forming a gigantic water sphere and sending it careening towards my mom. I sat down on the sand, a book on economics appearing in my hand as I teleported it from my room. Suddenly, all the sunlight around me disappeared. I looked up to see a gigantic ball of water floating above me. I barely had enough time to teleport my book out of the way before the deluge of water fell on me, soaking me from head to toe. I looked at my parents who both had gigantic grins on their faces.
"Alright, you two want a splash war?" I said, running towards the ocean. "I'm game." I dove into the water, easily swimming to my parents and gathering up the water around me. I spread my wings and took to the skies, the water streaming behind me. I fired the water at my parents, using the gravity to increase the water's speed. My parents looked at each other, gave each other a nod, and took control of the water I shot at them, conjuring a huge waterspout that rushed up towards me. I fired an Air Slash down at the waterspout, cutting it in half. Suddenly, my parents came out of the split waterspout, using the waterspout as camouflage. They both fired Hydro Pumps at me before I could. As the Hydro Pumps hurtled towards me, they suddenly disappeared into two portals on either side of me.
"2v1 doesn't seem that fair!" Kaylee said with her back to me, as the portals disappeared. She turned around, and the two Hydro Pumps came hurtling out of two new portals. My parents teleported out of the way, diving into the water. I stopped the water from falling and kept it close to me. "Can you see them?" Kaylee said.
"Yeah, let me find them." I searched the sea for auras. I saw both of my parent's auras well as they attempted to get far away from each other. "They're separating from this point." I pointed to their general locations.
"When they're about to attack, fire two water blasts straight down at the ground. Make them as fast as you possibly can." Kaylee said.
"But they're moving away from us. Wouldn't it make sense to fire directly at them?"
"Trust me on this," Kaylee said. I still didn't understand her objective, but I decided to go with her plan. I focused on my parent's auras, looking for any change in them. I saw both of them jump out of the water. I focused all my energy into making the water move as fast as possible. Two portals appeared under me, and transported the water behind each of my parents, hitting them in the backs, sending them flying. "We give!" I heard my parents yell over the surf. I released my control over the water, and it returned to the ocean. I slowly descended to the beach, using my wings to keep myself floating. "By the way Kaylee, how are you still flying? You're not doing anything to keep yourself in the air."
"Zero gravity. I've learned a few tricks too, you know. I have my own pocket dimension now, and Palkia says that in a few weeks, I'll be able to make a dimension the size of the house."
"A pocket dimension could be very useful," I said, my feet landing on the soft sand of the beach. My parent's popped out of the water and walked up to the beach.
"Nicely done, you two. That was impressive teamwork." My dad said.
"Same to you two," I said. It was still surreal that my entire family had become Pokemorphs in only a few short weeks like everything was a dream. My parents waved, and then dived back into the ocean. "Where are they going?" I asked.
"To train like you've been doing. They've been talking to my parents about making sure that they can fight in case something like the kidnapping happens again."
"Makes sense," I said. I saw my brother on the beach, looking forlorn. "I'll catch up with you Kaylee, you go ahead."
"I was going to anyway."
I walked up to my brother. "Yo, Tyler! How ya doing!"
"I'm fine." He said, pouting and looking away from me.
Even without looking at his aura, I could tell that something was bothering him. "Alright, what's bothering you?"
"Nothing." He said, still not looking at me. I could feel the negativity in his aura. I had found that one of the perks of being a Lugia was being an empath, allowing me to feel strong emotions instinctually.
"Come on. What's wrong? You can tell me." I said, sitting next to him.
He remained silent before he murmured, "Is it cool being a Lugia?"
I thought for a second, "Yeah, it's pretty fun. Breathing underwater is pretty cool. Why do you ask?"
"You guys looked like you were having fun."
"If you wanted to join, you could just have copied my Aeroblast and joined in. No one would mind."
"It just seemed like it was, you know, something for just the Legendaries." He said, finally revealing the underlying issue.
"Tyler, you're my brother, you could have joined anytime," I said.
"No o-ne could-" He said under his breath, his voice becoming harder to hear with every word.
"I couldn't actually hear you," I said.
"No one could tell we were ever brothers just by looking at us!" He stood up and yelled, letting out his emotions. He sat down, facing away from me. "You're half-Lugia, I'm half-Kecleon, and we don't look anything like each other. And now that Mom and Dad are both half-Lugia too, I'm the only member of our family that's not a Lugia!"
"Tyler?" I said, prompting him to turn around. I took a deep breath and focused my energy into one of my fingers, creating a miniature blade of wind. I slashed my wrist, flinching a bit from the pain. Crimson blood stained my white scales.
"What the!' Tyler said. "Why did you do that?"
"Even if we have different Pokemon's DNA, we still share the same blood. It doesn't matter what you become, the bond our family shares through our blood will always be stronger." I felt his sadness start to vanish, like the sun peeking behind the clouds.
"Also, don't forget that you're a stealthy chameleon who can his type almost at will. Even if we're different Pokemon, it's not like you're not awesome. You won the last spar for our team, remember?" I said.
"Thanks, Chase." He smiled and looked out to the ocean. "Was it really necessary to cut your arm like that?"
"Oh, be quiet," I said, lightly punching him on the shoulder. "Come on, let's go back inside."
