Chapter 11
21 Gun Standoff; Justice Versus Justice, Brother Versus Brother
-Signal Academy, Sophomore Exams-
-Past, Approximately Two and a Half Years Ago-
-Suggested Listening: "Le Repos Du Guerrier", Code Geass OST-
"Go Team Blade Wave!" Ruby exclaimed, pumping her fist into the air.
"Seriously, we can't come up with something better?" Dante asked, his head butting up against the other two as they huddled.
"Get yer 'ead out o' yer ass an' 'ave some fun man!" Sven answered, the scoff pointedly positive in direction.
Ruby watched as Dante gave a sigh and a pinch of his nose before delivering a good-natured grin. He rolled his eyes and broke away from their huddle, his grin growing to a full-blown smile as he strolled. Sven let his arms drop, but stayed at Ruby's side.
"Fine, but if you get overeager again and overshoot your targets, you bet like hell I'm giving you flack for it," the dark haired teen chuckled, donning a thick red helmet.
"'Ey! Tha' only 'appened once!" Sven snarled, putting on a matching helmet. He paused mid-clasp before adding, "Alright, fa'ur times, but I've been gettin' better!"
"Oh calm down you two," Ruby chided, sliding her own helmet over her head. "It doesn't matter if we win, so long as we put on a good show!" she chirped, bouncing on her heels. She hopped in front of the other two, gripping her prized blocky red weapon in a cuddling embrace. "I finally get to show off Crescent Rose for what she can really do."
"You and that thing need to get a room, Rubes. I think even your uncle's scared of how much you dote on that thing," Dante chuckled.
He took an involuntary step back with the glare she sent his way.
"You're just jealous," she said, rubbing the smooth crimson metal, trying to soothe its feelings. "You just couldn't be as creative as I was."
"Well that's just mean!" he argued back, pulling out the trench-knives out of his jacket and giving them a once over. "I dare you to try and channel aura through Crescent Rose like I do through the Peacekeepers!"
Ruby blanched somewhat, gripping her weapon tighter.
"Jeez, calm down chil'en, you wor'y so much 'bout yer weapons, but yer useless wit'out 'em…" Sven butted in, threading his fingers through his close-cropped hair before linking them behind his head. The two sent him a collective leer.
"Says the guy who can't use his aura at full for longer than ten minutes without collapsing," Ruby snarked back. "Do you even have a semblance?"
Ruby noticed Sven's face drooping just a second too late. She moved to apologize but Dante jumped on the bashing parade before she could.
"And look how original you are, Mr. 'I-stapled-blades-to-a-gun'. Couldn't come up with something a little more unique?" the dark haired teen coughed. "I mean, I know the Peacekeepers aren't exactly new either, but at least they ca-"
"Dante, stop." Ruby immediately lashed. She'd stopped walking, mostly because Sven had stopped walking. "Go on ahead, we'll catch up," she added, brows furrowing towards her ginger friend. Dante shared a look between them and frowned.
"Hey man, I was just…" Dante started, stepping towards Sven.
Sven stepped back and let out a disappointed sigh.
This isn't helping… she thought dryly.
"Dante… just go okay?" she asked, giving him as much of a reassuring look as she could with her saddened features.
The darker boy relented, shrinking into himself before moving on.
Ruby returned her stare to the Islander.
He was quiet for a time.
"I'm no'h mad at 'im…" he muttered slowly, casting a glare at her. She cowered back, elbows sinking into her ribs.
"Sven… I… forgot," she replied dumbly, scratching the back of her head. "I didn't mean to…"
His gaze softened and he shook his head.
"I kno', I kno'… just… caugh' me of' guard 's all. Yo' didn' mean it," he replied, stepping forward. "Sor'y fer scarin' ya… c'mon, we've asses to kick."
"Yeah…" Ruby replied, her voice airy and low.
"Oi!" Sven quickly replied, "Wh're's tha' spirit o' yours? Get yer 'ead back in tha' game Rubbles!" he flashed her a smile and a confident thumbs up.
His way of rebounding, she recalled. She'd seen him do it enough; get depressed about something, then jump back with a bundle of enthusiasm. The only way she found to really manage it was to play into the façade of happiness. In no time he'd be back to his normal banter-worthy self, something she admired as she found her own emotions were a little harder to manipulate.
Then again, that just makes me all the more unpredictable in the field… she mused with a grin. I guess that's one advantage.
"Of course! Team Blade Wave needs to take out the weak team Geomagnetic Force!" she bounced.
The names were just something they made up. Officially they were teams 5 and 17, two teams of three composed for the sake of final evaluations for the second year of signal. The entire class was divided into trios and then pitted against each other in 3v3 in order to demonstrate skill and combat prowess. It accounted for 50% of the year's final grade and built upon all of the cumulative knowledge of the past two years.
The other team, 'Geomagnetic Force', was comprised of Ruby's other three friends at Signal; Lati, Aveline and Jake. Once they heard about the short-term team arrangements (something they'd been assigned two weeks prior in order to practice coordination) Lati and Ruby had doubled up and begged her uncle, one of the senior teachers, to rig the voting process. He'd declined of course, not letting his niece and friends manipulate him, however regardless his input it seemed that fate was in their favor. Teams 5 and 17 were pitted against each other by the raffle, which was announced a week after the teams had been formed.
From that point on Ruby had taken the initiative and pulled Dante and Sven into private training sessions so they would be able to down their friends with little trouble. At least, that was the theory.
Now it was the moment of truth.
The teams met in the school's arena on their assigned days and were sent to separate locker rooms to gear up. Special protective equipment was used; helmets, arm and leg guards, and a torso piece, all detailed in designated team colors (red and blue in this case). Of course, it padded the combatants from serious injury (especially when the use of non-lethal ammunition was considered), but it also served the purpose of simulating crippling injuries when heavy impacts were made against the surface. Body parts would be locked down, hindering movement or even entirely disabling a combatant if the blow was accurate or hard enough.
Ruby, Sven and Dante all stepped out into the arena, weapons readied as they made their way onto the staged battle space. It was a simple sand combat circle that housed four large boulders that designated 'corners' to the rounded battleground. High, curved walls surrounded them, ones that could be moved and repositioned for different sized and shaped arenas. The spectators, namely the judging teachers, all sat behind a pane of reinforced glass that were melded into the walls near their tops, providing an elevated viewing area. Ruby caught a glimpse of her sister through one of the high windows. The blonde was jumping up and down in her seat and waving. The crimson-cloaked girl waved back to her sister, arms flailing with excitement.
Dante had reached the lip of the arena first, already trading trash talk with the other three poised on the other side.
"Hey Lati, Goldbeard called, he wants his scabbard back," he jeered, his brown eyes narrowing towards the blue team.
"What're you talking about? He sent me ahead of him to with my band of pirates to wipe out ye scurvy dogs," she snickered back, drawing her cutlass, Greig, and bringing it to bear on Dante.
Aveline stepped forward, her long red locks stuffed deep inside her blue helmet. Her grin let a single canine flash through her lips. "Arr! We be here to kill the reds, kill the reds, kill the reds!" she laughed, waving her rifle in the air.
Jake, having been silent up until that point, glanced between the two before raising his shield in tandem with Aveline. "Yo-ho!" he called out.
"Ah shite, they'r' in league wi' ol' Goldbeard," Sven muttered, stepping up to the ring and resting his boot on the ledge. "Looks like we lost this one guys," he added dryly.
"Please, I spar against Yang. Goldbeard has nothing on Goldmane, and that goes double for his crew," Ruby rolled her eyes, stepping in line besides her friends.
The lights to the room went dark. The sextet fell silent.
"…Guess it's time to begin…" Lati mumbled, her voice just barely managing to carry in the stillness.
"You alright man?" Dante asked, leaning over on Sven's shoulder behind Ruby's back.
"Aye, just a bit o' shock is all, 'sall gone now," Sven smiled, leaning back towards the ring.
Eight lights flick on and solely illuminated the battlefield. In short order they flashed from red, to yellow, to green, and then to the general soft white.
There was another silence.
"TO BATTLE!" Aveline screamed, running towards the nearest cover while opening with suppressing fire. The other five were only a few seconds behind.
"Sven, Dante! Scissor-Slice!" Ruby screamed, ducking to the right behind one of the boulder.
"Aye-aye ma'am!" Sven yelled, rushing forward. His boots glowed with their familiar white/black light as he shot towards Lati. The girl had just managed to step into the field when Sven unloaded on her with a wave of automatic fire.
The girl spun on her heel and tried to avoid the onslaught. A few rounds pinged off her protective gear, but weren't strong enough to activate the locking system. Still on an intercept course, Sven raised his left Faux Claw and aimed it squarely at Lati's chest. She brought her cutlass up and countered the strike, forcing Sven to spin and try a swipe at her with his right blade. She narrowly dodged the blade before swinging down and locking steel with Sven's attacks.
He twisted around her, trying to break the lock and get an opening on her. Instead he began taking fire from Aveline in her crouched position behind the nearby boulder. He devoted one of his pistols to spray a few rounds at her. She quickly dived behind cover just before he ran out of ammunition.
Ruby, observing all this, decided now was her time to rush.
"Sven! Down!" she cried, leaping on top of the rock and firing her rifle behind her. The kinetic energy jolted her forward, though it was considerably slower than she was attuned to. Sven managed to duck out of the way just as Crescent Rose locked around Lati's chest and slammed her to the ground. Her suit, taking the hit, locked up immediately, throwing her out of the battle.
Sven rolled to his feet, only to be struck in the arm by one of Aveline's shots. He staggered backwards and clutched the 'wound' as his limb locked up completely.
"Ah damn!" he snarled. That's when he saw a glint of metal embed itself in the boulder Aveline was using as cover. He realized too late what it was. "Frack," was all he could mutter as Jake slammed into him from behind. The boy had used his magnetic shield to fling himself towards the metal pellet he'd fired into the rock, his shield coming perfectly in line with Sven's head. The Islander boy's armor sealed shut as he went sliding to a halt face-first in the sand. A muffled "Lucky Bastard" drifted up from the fallen redhead.
"Dante, now!" Ruby shrieked, still trying to bring Crescent Rose around for another rush. She was embarrassed to say that she'd botched her landing with that attack on Lati.
Dante, however, was primed and ready for attack. He flew out of the shadows of the rock opposite Aveline's, his blades bright with red energy. With one mighty swing he let out a wave of gold and red, one that sailed right over Sven and into Jake's exposed back. Jake stumbled back as several parts of his armor locked up on him. Dante used this to finish him off, running up and delivering three crushing punches with the knuckled part of the Peacemakers.
"C'mon Jake, you're smarter than that…" Lati groaned, trying her best to look over at her equally paralyzed teammate.
"Don't worry captain, I'm sure we'll be avenged sometime," Jake replied, his voice never leaving its disquieting monotone.
Lati rolled her eyes and smiled.
"Jaaayyydeeennnnnn… Noooooooooo!" Aveline screamed, mimicking slow motion with her drawn out voice. The girl leapt from her position, bayonet poised to strike Dante down.
But Ruby had recovered. It took two shots to get Crescent Rose back up into its brutal crimson flurry.
Aveline didn't even have time to think as she collapsed in a heap on top of her teammate, the boy rolling his eyes at her abuse of his nickname. Ruby and Dante approached their piled friends, quiet over the melodrama their opponents had created.
And then they started giggling. As did the other four.
Soon enough the room was full with the boisterous laughter of good friends and good memories.
Safe to say, they all passed with flying colors.

Ruby wondered where things had gone wrong.
It had been a beautiful day. Big fluffy clouds in the sky, green grass going on for miles to the north and south, a gorgeous view of Vale and the ocean. It was so good that it seemed even Weiss had been enjoying herself. Ruby was even thinking of asking the heiress to try an actual hotdog for once, readying a plate for her with everything she liked when the idea struck.
And that's when two of her closest friends since childhood decided to pull knives on each other.
Well, 'knives' was kind of relative when it came to hunters, but that didn't change the fact that the two of them were an inch away from killing their opposite.
Ruby immediately dropped the plate to the grass, the sausage bouncing into the field, forgotten.
"Sven! Dante!" she shrieked. With a few semblance-infused strides she'd whisked over to the cliff edge. Their arms were crossing over one another, Sven's left bladed machine pistol pointing up into Dante's throat while Dante's trench knife angled itself just below Sven's Adam's apple. The Islander's eyes were narrowed, green orbs almost completely eclipsing his ever-shrinking pupil. The slasher, on the other hand, had his eyes wide, surprise tickling along the slick surface of his iris. "What… You… Stop it, stop it now!" Ruby yelled, stomping her foot.
"No'h 'appenin' Rubes," Sven seethed back, gaze never deviating from Dante.
Ruby cast her eyes between them, silver irises dancing back and forth in panic.
"Dante, what did you say to him? Apologize! You know how he can go off on anything!" the crimson girl pleaded, waving her arms emphatically at her friend. She turned to Sven. "And you, whatever he said doesn't give you permission to point a gun at him!"
"I DIDN'T SAY A DAMN THING!"
"HE'S A MURDERER RUBY!"
Ruby froze.
"What?" her head snapped to gape at the pinned slasher.
"Are you sure Sven?" a fourth voice broke in. Sven nodded in response.
Stepping in from behind Ruby was Voreia Lancea, the girl's face drawn into a hard glare. At the woman's side was her trusted weapon, one that Ruby had ogled over when the two had first met at the beginning of the train assignment. The Hornet Dragon, rather large lance that it was, rested on the woman's shoulder before she brought it down to level with Dante's throat, same as Sven's Faux Claw.
"Does the name Notia Lancea ring a bell, Dante? He was found dead a few weeks ago after a fire, the day before we came to Beacon," the purple haired girl asked, electric eyes teeming with rage.
Dante's eyes widened.
"La-Lancea… shit… I didn't…" the dark haired boy stuttered out.
"What, didn't put it together?" Sven asked, teeth gnashing against spittle. "What about Rinna Hafr? That hit any chords?"
All Dante did was tighten his jaw, though Ruby noticed the way her friend's eyes were shaking.
"Ruby, what's going on?" Weiss asked, sliding up next to her partner. The alabaster girl's eyes were locked squarely on the standstill between Sven and Dante. The crimson leader chanced a glance back and found the majority of the party slowly crowding around the scene, all of them concerned or intrigued in their own way.
"Dante… what are they talking about…?" Ruby asked, returning her attention to her two vying friends.
"Ruby, stay out of this," Dante hissed. She watched closely as the other team leader stared the Islander down, eyes twitching back and forth, looking for an opening for attack or escape.
She caught glimpse of movement out of the corner of her eye. Sven reached inside his jacket and pulled out his scroll with his free hand, tossing it casually to Ruby.
"Fo'hrty-ei'ht murders in the la'st two years, all with signs of the same perp, all spread ou'h o'er the world," the redhead explained, hand dropping to his side. "Anything about the MO seem familiar? What about the dates when they occurred? Everythin' points back to Dante traipsing aroun' slaughterin' people across Remnant."
Ruby looked down and unlocked the screen, quickly sifting through the information left for her. Words and images flew across the display, the pictures becoming more and more gruesome, Ruby's hands trembling more and more. Eventually she dropped the scroll, fingers cupped to her mouth in order to stop her from puking.
"That's preposterous!"
Ruby's head snapped to her left. It was Weiss who had spoken. Her partner must have been reading over the cloaked girl's shoulder.
"No Beacon student would sully their hands in such a way!" the heiress continued, taking a tentative step to her left, just behind and to the right of Sven. "Especially one that has as much talent as Mr. Scales here. He was even smart enough to request my aid when he was struggling. That should prove a point of decency in itself," she sneered.
"Hate ta break it to ya princess, but the world don' spin on yer dime," Sven hissed, unwilling to look back at her. "He's a killer. No question. Now if you'd kindly help me take him into the police…"
"If that's your endgame, why didn't you just call them in the first place?" Weiss snapped.
"Do ya 'onestly think thos' idiots could take down a fleein' 'unter? He'd be long gone if we didn't corner 'im!" he snapped back.
"That doesn't give you the right to do their job!" she spat. Without hesitation, she drew Myrtenaster and pointed it at Sven's spine. "Drop the weapon, and we let the proper authorities handle this. If there's any merit he'll get his proper punishment."
"Oh, great, jus' 'do as I say, no'h as I do', eh?" Sven scoffed. In a flash he'd drawn his second Faux Claw, the right-handed one, and pointed it to the girl's head. "'Bit hypocritical of ya Schnee."
"I'm protecting one of my peers from undue aggression from an unreasonable opponent!" she spoke. The last words out of her mouth disintegrated into a high-pitched hitch as a blade slid before her throat.
"And I'm protecting my partner."
All eyes turned to one of the other hunters who'd shifted from the crowd. It was Okdes, the Paladin edging his sword just above Weiss's lapel.
In a snap Ruby woke up, reflexively pulling Crescent Rose to aim at the unarmored knight. The boy flicked something on his sword and a barrel with an accompanying trigger popped out of the hilt, the sights aligned perfectly with Ruby.
"Don't…" Ruby jittered out, teeth rattling.
"Don't make me," Okdes replied levelly.
"Sven," Ruby pleaded, turning to her friend. "Please, just put down the gun… or… or I swear I won't be your friend anymore!" she cried. It was clearly an act of desperation, and she quickly chided herself for being immature, but a rational side of her brain argued there wasn't much else she could do in a situation that was only getting worse.
Sven's eyes tightened.
"Ruby…" his breath hitched. "I… you kno' I can't choose 'tween tha'h…"
"Don't you dare threaten my sister!" an arm shot out and wrapped its way around Okdes' throat. The flash of golden hair signaled Yang's entrance to the fray.
An entrance that was met shortly by a set of sickle-like ice picks looping over her jugular.
"Please…" Lux whispered, "don't hurt my friends…"
Yang stood stock straight, still keeping the shorter Okdes in her grip.
Ruby watched as Blake tried to rush out of the group before being immediately stopped by another faunus, one with wooly pink hair and a rifle. She had Gambol shroud, having readied it to threaten Lux only to be met with the wall that was Francis.
"Not so fast Ms. Broodybow," Francis stated, leveling the rifle at her face.
"Heh, Broodybow, how come I never thought of tha-," Yang began, edging her head to look back at Blake. If it was possible, her already blood red eyes became an even more furious shade of scarlet. "Don't you lay a single finger on Blake!"
He shouted a reply back to her, but Ruby's attention was drawn away towards a rather shrill scream of surprise.
"Hey! Get off of me!" Nikko shouted. A hand had been placed on her shoulder, one belonging to Corr. The ashen-haired teen stared at Nikko with determined molten eyes.
"I wish to request you stop pointing weapons at my partner," Corr stated flatly, his voice completely level.
"And I'd appreciate it if you get your hand off my partner's back."
A blade landed lightly on Corr's shoulder, in mirror of where he held Nikko. The cutlass extended back to an enraged Lati, rick brown hair waving in the wind. Likewise Jake and Aveline stood beside her, weapons level with the back of Corr's head. Ruby caught a Aveline throwing a concerned look back towards Eireen, the black-haired girl and her partner sitting on the sidelines watching. Neither of them seemed interested in moving to intercede in the showdown.
Of to Ruby's left, the situation had become even worse. Now constant shouts and arguments were being slung to and fro, not to mention the inclusion of Jaune and Pyrrha, who had their weapons poised at Lux and Francis, respectively.
"Let me go Ren! LET. ME. GO!" Nora shouted, struggling against her partner's grasp.
"Nora, trust me, if we don't want our friends to get hurt, we should stay out of this," Ren grunted, barely able to hold the much stronger girl back.
"But Yang hair might get messed up, and what about Blake's ears, we don't know what'll happen if-!"
"NORA!" Ren shouted cutting off her tirade.
"Ears?" Francis asked, fuchsia eyes turning to the girl he was holding at gunpoint, cocking his head quizzically. "You're ears look fine to m…" his words tailed off as he looked between the bow and her face. "Oh… you're a faunus too?"
Blake scowled.
"Who's a what now?" Lux asked, throwing his eyes every which way.
"ALL OF YOU! JUST. SHUT. UP!" Dante barked, eyes becoming more stable.
For a moment all was silent, all gazes converging on him.
"Sven… Nikko…" he started calmly, "if you're going to kill me, kill me."
A gust of wind whisked by, buffeting the cliff with cool air. On an almost undetectable level Sven's hand began to quiver.
"Don't bother taking me to the police," he continued, his teeth grinding against each other. His voice became more infuriated and raspy. "They never do their damn job. So, if you want justice, take it!"
Everyone was still.
"So you don't deny it…?" Nikko muttered, the tail of a tear leaving a glistening trail on her cheek.
"No," Dante responded, sparing a glance her way. "The system failed justice. They escaped their sentencing through technicalities and I took it upon myself to deliver what they deserved."
"'Oo gave you the right?" Sven muttered, his own eyes budding with tears. "No one shoul' 'ave that kind o' power!" he shouted.
"Then what's the point of a jury?" Dante spat back, jaw trembling. "They let mass murder's go free, people I swore to protect died because of those bastards!" he cried, shaking his head. "Criminals dig their own graves… I'm just the one that puts them in…"
The mumble devolved into heavy breathing between the two.
"Rinna Hafr?" Sven asked, his voice much quieter.
"Was a drug dealer and scum, he didn't deserve to get off on so many criminal charges," Dante explained, lips tweaking.
"He was a junkie and utterly harmless!" Sven hissed back.
"What about my brother?" Nikko jumped in, voice hoarse. "What about Notia?"
Dante fixed her with a glare.
"He made bombs for the Torchwick Syndicate, do you know how many people he's responsible for killing?" he replied, waving his other hand freely.
Her glare bound up to his, nose and brows scrunched in fury.
"Then you'll have to kill me too, because I'm just as much responsible for making those bombs!" she screeched, eyes streaming with tears. "People do what they have to, to survive! You shouldn't damn someone if they make a wrong turn!"
He paused, taking a moment to breathe.
"Nikko… sometimes… sometimes that wrong turn is all you need to go off a cliff…"
Another pause.
"So where do you think you're heading?" she squeaked back, her eyes softening.
Dante shifted on his feet uneasily, "I… I don't know…"
Ruby shook her head and sheathed Crescent Rose.
"Sven… Nikko… Dante… please…" she asked meekly, looking between the three, then to the spider web of weapons surrounding them.
"No, justice has to be served, right? And if what they think they're doing is justice, let them!" Dante barked back, his face once more a steel sheet. His fist tightened around the single Peacekeeper.
Ruby felt bile building in her throat. This… this isn't a fight… this isn't… this isn't like fighting. No one needs to die… no one… no one… her mind was coming up with blanks. Sven, Dante… A funeral passed by in her mind, coffins carrying the two boys. Her throat burned.
"Sven… stop it, please!" she pleaded, turning to the Islander.
"If he won't go to jail," his finger tightened around the trigger.
"Nikko!" Ruby begged, turning to her fellow mechanic.
"I… I saved him… I saved this bastard…" the lancer muttered lowly, Hornet Dragon edging ever closer to Dante's chin.
The image of Dante's cask having no head and Sven's having a sewn together chest flashed in her thoughts. The bile bubbled and fizzed.
"JUST STOP, PLEASE EVERYONE JUST STOP!" she shouted, crying.
And that's when the City Council hall exploded.

Author's Note: HELLO PEOPLE! We're back for another exciting Arc of R-W-B-Y-S!
Special thanks to my wonderful BETA Ayami for giving this a once over!
How's that for an opening scene? My own personal 21 Gun Standoff between all of the core characters! This is one of those scenes I've had since the inception of RWBYS, one that's gone through many variations and changes in my mind. Ultimately, I feel it came out rather well, though I do hope I don't lose anyone going through it. It DOES get a bit confusing with who's pointing at what.
For those of you that wonder, my film script is done and is now in the editing process. My producer is looking at it as I speak, so hopefully I'll get some feedback and we can enter full preproduction! Then you'll all be able to see my ugly mug on the big screen! :D
I sincerely hope you enjoyed this chapter, it's one that took quite a lot of careful thought and plotting and will set up many of the character interactions to come. Admittedly, I don't have as much freetime in the summer as I thought I'd have, what with working nights every weekday and trying to keep my non-RWBY related creative endeavors going. So don't expect as consistent updates as I WAS able to provide during Fall Semester. The next chapter will be one hell of a MEGA CHAPTER that'll take some serious time to complete, so look for about 2 or 3 weeks until I'm done with it.
Until then, thanks for reading! Please review, favorite and most importantly follow!
Catch you on the flip! :D
