Chapter 13
Doomed
Buffy and Riley walked through the campus hand in hand, chatting causally about classes. Buffy looked up and caught glimpse of an old friend. There stood in front of her was her best friend, Willow, she smiled and Buffy ran towards her and pulled her into a deep hug.
"Will, am so glad to see you." Buffy hugged her tighter.
"Me too, but cant breath here." Willow squeaked.
"Sorry." Buffy let Willow loose from her tight grip and took a step backwards.
"What are you doing here?" Buffy asked still in shock.
"Well Sunnydale just wasn't them same, I decided to enrol here." Willow said proudly.
"Your going to school here?" Buffy was still in shock but felt ecstatic at her friend being here.
"Yep, I start classes tomorrow." Willow nodded with excitement.
"Hi there." Riley's voice came from behind Buffy.
"Will, this is Riley, Riley this is Willow my best friend." Buffy said almost bouncing.
"Nice to meet you Willow." Riley nodded towards the red head.
"Thanks, and you too." Willow raised her eyes at Buffy.
"I'll let you two catch up." Riley said giving Buffy a kiss on her forehead and taking his leave.
"You hungry?" Buffy asked.
"Famished, where's good?" Willow asked.
Buffy took Willow to the Grill, where they sat in a booth. Buffy sat down and noticed that Klaus was on a stool at the bar, he was alone drinking. He had spotted her too, he gave her his intense glare that made her feel on edge. Willow must of noticed because she turned round to see what had grabbed Buffy's attention. Buffy quickly looked away when Willow turned back to face her.
"Who that Guy?" Willow asked.
"Long story." Buffy sighed.
"I want to know all about it." Willow giggled and Buffy laughed with her.
"Later." Buffy whispered lowering her head, she wondered if he would be listening in to their conversation.
"Okay, so tell me about Riley." Willow jiggled her eyebrow's at her and she laughed.
"Its just different you know? First of all daylight, kind of a new venue, Buffywise. He's really sweet." Buffy answered.
"So he's nice?" Willow asked.
"Very, very." Buffy smiled.
"And there's sparkage?"
"Yeah, he's...have you seen his arms? Those are good arms to have. I really like him." Buffy sighed.
"There's a but?" Willow knew her better than anyone.
"I don't know, I really like being around him you know? And I think he cares about me... but.. I just.. feel like something's missing." Buffy finished.
"He's not making you miserable?" Willow nodded.
"Exactly, Riley seems so solid, like he wouldn't cause me heartache." Buffy knew it to be true.
"Get out, get out while there's still time." Willow laughed and Buffy laughed with her.
"I know... I have to get away from that bad boy thing, there's no good there." Buffy thought and couldn't help but think of Klaus, he was no good for her and she had always known it.
"Right, because the pain that's caused its not a friend." Willow agreed, and Buffy knew she was glad to have Willow here, she knew she could trust her and confined in her, she needed to tell her how she was really feeling.
"But I cant help thinking isn't that where the fire comes from? Can a nice safe relationship be that intense? I know its crazy but part of me believes that real love and passion have to go hand in hand with the pain and fighting." Buffy sighed. "I wonder where I get that from."
Buffy walked through the cemetery on her usual patrol, she was thinking about Willow, and she was glad she was staying here and going to college. She made friends with Elena, Caroline, Bonnie, Stefan and even Damon but they were all vampires, even though she knew they were good, it was nice to have her old friend around, she trusted Will one hundred per cent she knew she could always count on her, and she was happy she could finally talk to someone about everything that had happened since she had moved to Mystic Falls.
She suddenly became distracted when a couple of vampires pounced in front of her.
She immediately went in to slayer mode, pulling a stake from the back band of her pants. One of the vampires ran to attack her, but she flipped him to the ground, the second vampire grabbed her from behind, she elbowed him, making him lose his grip on her she immediately followed with backhand, she then kicked him in his legs sending him to the floor another double kick to his face and he was flat out on the ground, Buffy quickly acted and sent her stake into his heart, hitting her target perfectly the second vampire was dust, she gave a small smile and spun round wondering why the other vampire had not attacked her. She stopped in her tracks to see Riley there, he was hitting the other vampire in the face hard, he was dressed in dark clothes, combat boots. It didn't take him long to dust the other vampire, when he was done he spun round to face her, giving her a confused look, one she knew she shared.
"I guess we have to talk." Riley stated.
"I guess we do." Buffy said awkwardly and Riley sighed.
"What are you?" he blurted out.
"Capricorn on the cusp of Aquarius, You?" Buffy snapped at him.
"Sorry, that cam out a little blunter, its just your speed, your strength."
"Who are you?" Buffy asked.
"I...its complicated." Riley sighed.
"Try me."
"I work for a secret government agency called the Initiative, a sponsored special operation's, we research and combat demons." Riley answered and Buffy did not expect that answer.
"What about you?" He was still confused.
"I thought a professional demon chaser like yourself would have figured it out by now, I'm the slayer." Buffy answered.
"Wow, slayer. Here. I thought that was myth." He was shocked.
"So then... what do we do now?" Riley asked her.
"I don't know, I just... I really thought that you were a nice normal guy." Buffy sighed.
"I 'am a nice normal guy." He argued.
"Maybe by this towns standards but am not grading on a curve." Buffy paused taking a deep breathe "I think we both need a little time here." Buffy finished.
"No, I don't need time, Buffy. I know how I feel." Riley took a step towards her, and Buffy took a sharp step back.
"I just...I cant." She stammered.
"Cant what? Cant talk?"
"Cant any of it, I cant be with you. Its a huge black pit of a mistake and I cant go their again." Buffy felt panicked now, she didn't want this, she was afraid to get into deep here with him.
"Again? You dated me before?" He was still confused.
"No, I was involved with... You don't know what my life is like."
"And am dying to find out."
"Dying being the operative word here, there's too much risk, there's too much...its just doomed and I cant do doomed again, sorry."
"I don't understand where all this is coming from, I know you like me, and its not like we don't have anything in common."
"Its not enough." Buffy whispered.
"Buffy am thrown by this, am confused. I can feel my skin humming, my hands, my every inch of me, I've never been this excited about anybody before, am not trying to scare you and am not going to force myself on you, but am not going to walk away because I think it might not work, I don't know what happened in your past..." He took a step forward and reached out to touch her but Buffy jumped back, looking him straight in the eyes, she couldn't go through this again.
"Pain, death, apocalypse. None of it fun, do you know what a hell mouth is. Do you have a fancy term for it, cause I went to high school on it for three years, we DO NOT have that much in common." She snapped at him. "This is just a job to you."
"Its not just a job." Riley sighed.
"Right, it an adventure, great, but for me its destiny, its something I cant escape, am stuck."
"You don't have to be, your not in high school anymore, you can change things." Riley pleaded.
"Riley, No." Buffy said sharply.
"I know it may seem..."
"Riley, my answer is no." Buffy shouted over the top of him.
He looked away, she knew she had hurt him, but she was protecting him in the long run. She took a deep breathe and walked away, leaving him behind. She knew she was doing the right thing, she couldn't be with him they would both end up getting hurt. Buffy walked for a while and came to stop when she reached the park, she walked to the swings and sat on one. She sat still not moving but just thinking.
She felt a presence behind her, for a moment she thought Riley had followed her, but when she felt a tingle go through her, she knew it wasn't him. She looked to her side, to see Klaus take a seat on the swing beside her, he didn't look at her, he looked straight forward not saying a word, Buffy sighed and broke the silence.
"Why are you always around when am miserable?" Buffy asked, he chuckled quietly and turned to face her.
"Maybe I just know, when you need me around love." He smiled and she hated to admit it but his smile made her feel better and those dimples made her smile back.
"I never need you around." She rolled her eyes at him, but was still smiling.
"I couldn't help but over hear your conversation back there." His smile disappeared and he seemed concerned.
"Really, you couldn't help it?" Buffy shook her head why did he always have to ears drop on her.
"Your afraid you might hurt him?" Klaus asked her, and Buffy looked to the ground.
"No, I would never." She sighed. "Its just...I...If he stays with me, he'll wind up dead and I cant do it, its to hard and it shouldn't be this hard." She knew she was right but she still felt like she was convincing herself.
"You need someone strong, someone who can protect you, someone who knows what this world is really like." Klaus spoke softly "I think your right about passion going hand in hand with the fighting, we need the fire to make us feel alive."
Buffy lifted her head to face him, when she met his eyes, the air between them seem to change, everything suddenly became very intense and she suddenly felt hot, he leaned forward slightly and he seemed so calm and serious that Buffy burst out laughing and looked away.
"I cant believe am talking to you about this." She laughed and looked back his way, he gave her a sweet smile shaking his head.
"Like I said, I know when you need me around."
