Right Back Where We Started
Your fate has been decided. It was decided long ago. To be, or not to be; was never your choice. But the path you take and the roads you follow are up to you. Know that friends are for school, but best friends are for life.
May's POV
Later That Week
It was Wednesday. Again. Time sure seems to fly.
It's been a few days since Dawn tried talking to the boys. It's also been a few days since Dawn tensed up if you even said the letter 'P'. Leaf and I spoke, and we deduced that it has something to do with Paul. We didn't try and pry it out of Dawn, and we didn't pester Kayla about it either.
If it's private, it's private. That's that.
I scurried down the stairs and met up with the girls at the bottom. I smiled at Misty and she smiled back. Dawn looked up at me, as she was sitting trying to tie her shoes, and then passed me my brown boots. Leaf came out of the kitchen and handed us each our lunch. We'd started doing homemade lunches, since really, the cafeteria food was gross.
We all walked out the door together and headed off for school. Chatter struck up between us about the usual; homework, teachers, friends, and boys. We avoided the subject of Paul all together to be courteous to Dawn. After arriving at the school, we met up with our other 4. Misty, Dawn, Abi, Kayla and Melody went off to go find a couple of teachers, leaving Marina, Leaf and I.
"How are you today Marina?" Leaf asked.
She blushed. "I'm pretty good."
I sent her a sly look. "Better than good I'd say." I giggled and nudged her.
She blushed darker.
"Well spill!" Leaf chirped.
"Jimmy asked me out the other day and I said yes. He took me out for coffee and it was just wonderful." Marina giggled.
"Aw congrats!" Leaf laughed and hugged her. We all knew how much Marina liked Jimmy.
"How's everything with you two recently?" She asked, a smile forming on her face that was less giddy than before.
"I'm well. Still not talking to Gary, but whatever. I'll get over him." Leaf mumbled. She bit her lip afterwards signifying a lie. I wrapped an arm around her shoulder.
"I've been pretty good. Repaired a lot of friendships recently. I'm happy." I replied, taking some heat off Leaf.
"Relationships with who?" Marina teased.
"Ash, Leaf, Dawn, Abi, Misty, and Drew. I also made new friendships with you, Melody and Kayla."
"Did I hear Drew's name?" Leaf laughed, poking my side.
I rolled my eyes. "Maybe. We're just friends guys."
"I think he wants more than that." Leaf sang jokingly. I sighed.
"Haha Leaf. Very funny." I deadpanned.
Someone behind us cleared his or her throat awkwardly. We all turned and my eyes widened when I saw whom it was. I bit my lip and gave him a firm stare.
"What?" I demanded.
"May, I just want to apologize. I was a fool when we went out. Please consider taking me back. I'm so sorry." He said, looking at his shoes in shame.
"A little too late don't you think Brendan? If you really wanted to go out with me, you would have never cheated on me. Besides, I was never really completely serious about you. At one point I thought I might have been, but that's when my friends stepped in and said you weren't good for me. That's what real friends do. I'd appreciate it if you backed off now. Thanks." I flashed him a sour smile full of my pent up emotions.
Brendan let out an aggravated huff, but left shortly after.
"Nice." Leaf said deviously.
I gave her an exasperated look. "I'm so sick of that guy. I will never get back together with him." She smiled.
"Good. He's a jackass."
"Agreed." I nodded.
"You've got another visitor May." Marina whispered.
I turned around and saw Drew standing there.
"Oh um hi?" I said shyly.
Leaf and Marina began creeping away. Oh they were going to get it later.
"I was wondering if I could ask you something?" He said.
I bit my lip to stop from blushing. "Didn't give me much of a choice there did you."
"You know what I meant." He muttered, rolling his eyes.
I smiled. "K, um shoot?"
"I was wondering if you'd like to go out tonight? As a date?" He asked.
I gave him a shy smile. "I'd love to."
"Pick you up at 6?" He smiled. Not a smirk, a real genuine smile.
"Yeah. Six." I bit my lip to keep from squealing. I then decided to do something bold. If he was asking me out, he wouldn't mind anyways. I stood on my tiptoes and wrapped my arms around his neck.
He wrapped his arms around my waist and returned my hug. We pulled away at the same time, and as our faces passed, I leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. He didn't even blush. I suppose he was used to it.
"I'll see you around." He gave me a casual wave as he turned to go find his friends.
"Was that a kiss I spotted on the way out?" Misty asked slyly, appearing out of nowhere.
I jumped at the sound of her voice. "Maybe?" I chuckled nervously.
"Smooth." She laughed. She dumped the top few books in her arms into mine and I realized they were my books.
"Thanks Mist." I said. She nodded.
Dawn and Leaf soon rejoined us. Ash, Gary, Paul and Drew also walked up and struck up conversations. Paul and Dawn, and Leaf and Gary all noticeably didn't talk to each other.
"We all should probably get to class." Leaf said, taking a glance at her green wristwatch.
"Yeah." Gary agreed. We turned to head into the school when Misty stopped dead. Her eyes were fixed on a woman standing in the parking lot. The woman was staring at Misty as well.
She had hair as red as Misty's, with a few strawberry blonde streaks. Her eyes were a light cerulean blue and she wore a tan trenchcoat style jacket and tall brown boots. Her features were smooth and pretty but she looked to be in her late 40s or early 50s. She slowly began walking towards us, never taking her eyes off Misty.
I glanced at Misty. Tears were welling up in her eyes as she stared in awe and some horror at the woman. I noticed Leaf take one of her hands in an attempt to comfort her and Dawn took the other. I stood to Leaf's left.
The woman approached Misty with a cautious look in her eyes. "Is that you? Is it really you?" A tear slid out of her eyes.
Misty let a tear stray down her cheek, as she remained motionless. Then, in a heartbeat, she tore both of her hands free from Leaf and Dawn, turned and fled away on the school grounds.
The woman looked pained to see her run away.
"Who are you? What right do you have to set our friend to tears?" I asked as I studied the woman.
She sighed and smoothed out her trench coat. "I apologize. I shouldn't have approached her suddenly. She must still feel great remorse towards me..."
"That doesn't exactly answer who you are." Gary said firmly.
"Forgive me. I'm Miss Lucia (A/N: It's pronounced Lu-SHA) Greenfield. I'm Misty's mother."
Everyone froze.
That would explain why Misty reacted the way she did.
Ash was the first to move after the words left her mouth. He turned and ran the way Misty had ran off in. No one else bothered to follow. It would be wise to let Ash talk it out with her.
Leaf was next. She pulled out her cellphone and dialled a number. She spoke a few curt words, and then hung up. She gave Misty's mother a sceptical look. "Look Ma'am, you may be her mother, but my parents are her legal guardians right now. My father is on his way right now so we can sort this out."
"Students the bell went 10 minutes ago!" A supervision aid said as she approached us.
Lucia cleared her throat. "I apologise. I've caused some family troubles with these six and two more. I give my permission for them to be excused from class."
Dawn sent her a funny look. She looked at me and mouthed, 'what's her deal?' I shrugged. I really didn't know.
The aid shrugged, collected our names and sauntered off to report us with excused absences.
A silver car pulled into the parking lot and as soon as it stopped a man got out. Dawn, Leaf, and I instantly recognized Daniel Green.
"Dad!" Leaf called and waved her father over. He embraced Leaf calmly, regarded Gary briefly, and then turned his attention to Misty's mother.
"It's been what 10 years Lucia? Long time no see." He stated gruffly.
"Daniel Green is it? I apologise for the inconvenience." She started.
"You better have a good reason to come back now. I've raised your daughter as my own and I have no intentions of letting her go that easily."
I let out a quiet breath. I was relieved to see that Mr. and Mrs. Green would be willing to fight for Misty. I felt someone's hand slip into mine and turned and saw it was Drew's. I smiled and held his hand without protest. He was a sweet guy in his own way.
"Allow me to explain, after we gave up our youngest daughter I discovered some things about my husband that I never would have wished to ever know. He abused Misty greatly and recorded it all on video. I discovered one of the videos one day and destroyed it. I never wished for harm to come to my daughter. If you ask her, I once stood up for her, but my husband turned his abuse in my direction for a while. Our three eldest are 20 now and have all moved out. Just last year, when they moved out, I filed a divorce. I have divorced with the monster I once loved and I sought to make amends. I wanted to start with my biggest mistake; allowing myself to give up my daughter and leaving her with the impression her mother never loved her."
"How did you find us?" Dawn demanded. Mr. Green sent her a look, but Dawn was fairly angry; she wasn't backing down.
"I knew you were going to the Orange Islands so I started my search there. I searched through news reports and online newspapers in search of anything that would bring me towards Misty. There were several reports on high attendance schools in this area, so I began searching. I then wound up here."
"Its heart warming that you searched so hard for your daughter, but I really think that she will do just fine under the care of myself and my wife. She's gone without a real mother for 10 years; I doubt she feels much for you at all. It's for Misty's sake that I ask you to leave and please don't enter her life again." Mr. Green decided firmly.
Lucia had a pained look on her face, but she cast her eyes downwards and nodded. "I understand. Please tell my daughter I'm sorry."
"Why don't you say it yourself?" Misty asked. She and Ash were walking back in the way they'd run off. Misty's eyes were confused and her face read sadness.
"Angel..." Lucia murmured.
At the sound of the name, Misty's eyes watered. She pushed through the boys, Leaf, Dawn and I, and even ignored Mr. Green as she ran into her mother's arms.
Lucia let out a soft breath and held her close. "My sweet, sweet Angel. I love you so much."
Misty pulled back rom her mom. She straightened up. "You were terrible to me as a child. However, you also protected me from the worst of my father's wrath. I know you're here to ask me to come back to Kanto with you, but I don't think I can. I have so much here, it hurts too much to leave it all behind."
"I understand." Her mother said, smiling at her daughter.
"However, I'll make you a deal. I want to go to University in Kanto, so as soon as I'm done with High School, I'll come move back to Kanto with you."
Her mother's eyes watered in delight. "Really? Oh baby I love you." She hugged Misty again and Misty returned the hug.
"We should probably get to class now." Misty said. "I'll see you around. Keep in touch. Love you Mom."
The eight of us soon headed off to class, the subject of Misty's mom kept quiet. We headed to class and the day passed like a blur. Misty seemed oddly at peace, but the rest of us were actually fairly on edge. The only thing that kept me mainly grounded was the fact that I had a date tonight. With Drew. I had a date tonight with Drew. Wow...
After school, Misty, Dawn, Leaf and I began our walk home.
"So what's everyone doing tonight? Anyone want a movie night?" Dawn asked.
"I'm all for it." Misty grinned.
"Me too." Leaf replied. She looked at me. "May?"
"Um I have a date tonight with Drew at 6. Pleasedon'tfreakout!" I covered my face with my hands.
"Ha! Marina owes me 5 bucks!" Leaf cheered.
"You bet on whether he would ask me out?" I asked.
"Not that. We knew he was going to ask you out. I said he'd ask you out tonight and she said tomorrow night. I was right!" She smirked.
Dawn smiled. "That's so cute May. Have fun, k?" She winked.
"Don't do anything I wouldn't" Misty smiled slyly.
My cheeks heated up. "C'mon Misty you know I'd never..."
She winked.
I crossed my arms over my chest and pouted. "Shut up."
"Aw May we're just teasing." Leaf giggled and put an arm around my shoulder.
"I know." I blushed. "I'm just nervous that's all."
"C'mon May, I'm getting you ready." Dawn linked arms with me and dragged me the rest of the way home and up to my room where she then proceeded to become Hurricane Dawn as she tried to find my perfect outfit. She ended up choosing a simple black maxi skirt and a white silk shirt that tucked into it. My jewellery consisted of a silver bracelet, a silver necklace with a red rose pendant (forcing me to remove my mother's locket, much to my dismay) and silver stud earrings.
Before I knew it, it was five to six. There was a knock at the door and I opened it shyly. Drew was there, looking as casual as ever. He wore a normal shirt and a pair of jeans. I pulled on my silver and red heels and walked out the door and greeted him.
"You look great." He complimented me. I smiled.
"Thanks. You don't look bad yourself. Shall we go?"
He smiled. "We shall."
I followed him to his car and he opened the door for me. I hid my surprise as I got in. We made simple conversation until we got there. It was a smaller restaurant on the outside of town but it was quaint. We walked in and moved to our table under reservations for Drew. He, once again, pulled out my chair and I sat. We ordered our food and spoke politely to each other.
As the night went on we slowly became more and more comfortable with each other. We told jokes and stories. Drew found me to be genuinely funny and I also found him to be. Whenever he laughed he looked so much younger. It was inspiring to see him unguarded like this. I think I may have fallen in love with this boy.
It was weird to find someone like Drew who made everything better after dating Brendan and thinking love was stupid and dumb. This was different.
Drew and I spoke more and discovered we had more in common. We liked music, played guitar and many other things. He always had to keep asking me why I was being so shy. I'd just blush and laugh it off.
When we were leaving, after Drew paid, he took my hand and walked me through the parking lot. I was running out of things to say as the wonderful night came to a close. I almost said how much better of a time I'd had with him than I'd ever had with Brendan, but Drew started talking. He talked about a lot of stuff that just made me giggle. I stopped comparing Drew to Brendan. There was no comparison to be made.
When I got home, before I got out of Drew's car, I turned to him. "Thank you so much for the amazing night."
He smiled at me. "It's nothing."
I studied him. His eyes twinkled welcomingly. I leaned over and he did the same. Our lips met, if only for a second. Then I pulled away, thanked him again and got out of his car and walked into my house.
I had maybe just had one of the best Wednesdays in my life. It was love at the start. Or that's what I felt.
A/N: Well that was sweet... I'm sorry there wasn't much detail on the date but that's just kind of for another reason. I hope any contestshippers out there liked that.
I'm so sorry for not updating in a while. I've been on vacation with no internet and computer. ABCs of Falling in Love is next to be updated. Then maybe this or Deep Cover. Which ever comes first.
Again thanks for all the reviews I received on this story. I love you all and I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, or whatever holiday you celebrate and I hope you all have a wonderful New Year.
Just a warning my life has been complete hell lately (For personal reasons) and I'm not sure when my next update will come. I hope you will all be patient with me. Thanks for sticking with me and my wacky update schedule.
2014 baby. Here I come! B-)
