'Because when I arrive, I bring the fire, make you come alive.'
The school looked deserted and Lilly couldn't help but recall how only a few weeks earlier kids were lounging out on the grass in the sun, kicking a ball back and forth, or painting each other's nail. Now the grass looked dead from lack of water and the whole area was silent. She took a step back from the edge of the grass and the cover of the trees gave her comfort. She almost turned and ran all the way back down to her safe little house.
But she didn't.
The inside of the school wasn't much better than the outside. The classrooms lay bare and trashed; tables turned over and books torn to pieces. The shredded remains lay pathetically on the dirty linoleum. Lilly stepped past each one slowly and quietly. She half expected someone to jump out at her at any second. Or some thing. Where was everyone?
Broken glass was crushed underneath her heavy black boots - ones she had luckily had the sense to take from a store before everything became ransacked by bored kids. She floated from room to room like a ghost and every one was empty. With a heavy sigh she was just about to give up and leave Brianna for dead when a noise from outside caught her attention. The heavy oak doors were half open and she crept towards them with baited breath, gently pushing them open.
The sight before her released a scream from the bottom of her stomach. It was instantly cut off by a hand on her mouth and she was pulled back into the school.
She watched him like a deer in the headlights. Beneath her rib cage her heart was pounding so fast she thought she might faint. Her legs wobbled.
He was stood to one side, a smirk on his lips and one arm outstretched as if he were welcoming her into a party. But he wasn't welcoming her. His arm was in the direction of the door and the door was open.
He was letting her go.
Lilly's shrieks were muffled as she was spun round and suddenly slammed back against the stone wall. She slapped the person who had a hold of her and he grunted, pushing her shoulders painfully. His hand was still pressed roughly against her mouth and he pinned her with his hips pressed to hers.
'Thought you'd come back to see the little brat.'
She stilled at his voice and opened her eyes to find herself staring into his amused green ones. Her brows furrowed and she threw her head back to free herself of his grip. He let her, instead moving to hold her shoulder. 'What the fuck do you want?' She snarled. 'Get off me.'
He feigned hurt. 'Lilly, I thought we had something special. I've come to bring you home, honey.' He laughed at her furious expression.
'You're crazy.' She spat but her expression flickered slightly. 'What are they? What have you done to them?'
'Since when did you care about anyone but yourself?' Drake raised an eyebrow.
He didn't answer her question, though, instead choosing to roughly pull her into his arms and turn her again so her back was pressed against his chest. He marched her to the doors and swung them open. Lilly found herself faced with the same image as last time. She cried out in horror and tried to turn away but his hands grasped her head and held it in place. 'I simply gave them a few modifications,' he whispered in her ear, his breath sending shivers down her spine, 'y'know, for safety reasons.'
'You're sick.' She cried. 'Get off me!' She pulled away from me and surprisingly he let her go and watched her stumble down the steps. He followed at a leisurely pace and for the first time she noticed the gun tucked into his belt. 'Why their hands?' She gasped quickly in an attempt to stall whatever he had in mind for her.
His face gave away nothing. 'You've got a lot to learn.' He murmured.
Lilly kept her eyes on him as she walked backwards across the grass. What was he talking about? Hadn't he forgotten her? Wasn't he going to kill her? She opened her mouth to spew more stalling questions at him when suddenly something hard knocked against her leg and she jumped sideways.
'Lilly, please, help us. You've got to help us.'
The older girl stared down at Brianna with a slack jaw. She didn't know what to do or think. Brianna's eyes were brimming with tears, her face streaked with mud and her body... It was thin and bruised. The girl looked already dead.
'Bri...-' she started to speak but suddenly Drake was on her and dragging her away towards the forest. 'Stop it!' Lilly hammered her fists against him. 'Let her go! You're sick, you bastard, she's my friend!'
