Chapter 11

The two girls' trip along Route 116 had been mostly uneventful. They decided to take it easy, instead of hurrying their way to Rusturf Tunnel. Each of them had battled a few trainers along the way, but their slow pace seemed to mean there were less trainers to come by. All this extra time had given Meri the opportunity to think about why the hell she was having sex dreams about Serenity. After having travelled for two days, on the third, they made it to the tunnel. There was now a Pokémon center just outside of it. Before they left, the Nurse Joy stopped them and asked if the teenagers were going into Rusturf Tunnel. When they responded yes, the two were told to stay there for a minute. The Nurse went back and came back with two sets of ear muffs in thin plastic packaging. She explained that for the last few months, the Whismur, Loudred, and Exploud had been much noisier than in the past, and were causing great hearing damage to trainers. In response, the Pokémon League of Hoenn has been giving out free ear muffs to trainers who would be passing through the tunnel. All of the Zubat that had once occupied the cave had left now because of it, some of them had even died.

When they were near the entrance, they realized that they would definitely need the hearing protection. It was a little loud where they were standing. Meri thought Serenity had said something, but it turned out Meri just imagining something. With all the evidence the two needed, they each put on their ear muffs. Instantly, almost the entire world was cut off from her ears. It kind of sounded like when she had put the shell her Grandpa had brought from the ocean to her ear, but in both of them. The girls, as prepared as they would get, they stepped into the cave.

It slowly got louder, the further inside. It started out just a low hum, but eventually built to a constant drone of about conversation-level noise with the odd spike, mostly likely from an Exploud, since they'd most likely be the loudest in the evolution line. Besides the noise that could be heard through the ear muffs, there were also vibrations in the air that made Meri feel as though she were vibrating. The vibrations really were not helping the ache she felt with every passing second. Those little jumps in noise also caused a stronger vibration to hit her. There were times she simply couldn't stop a little moan or gasp from escaping her. Ohhh, thank God Serenity hasn't noticed. That's why, when after being unable to sleep for two hours, she had had enough and decided to do something about it.

About 10 o' clock, both of them were getting too tired to go on. They had decided to keep going later than usual so that they could make it through the cave quicker, but they were realizing that since the two of them had been in the thick of the noise for quite some time and it hadn't died down at all, the cave's exit was still pretty far away. Although for how deep in the cave it was, there was a surprising amount of light. It was probably because of all the whitish-tan stone that shot out of the ground and covered parts of the walls. They didn't talk at all since, even if the two were yelling right at each other, their voices would still probably be smothered by the noise created by the Pokémon, which apparently spent the majority of their time hiding.

As a result, the two pulled out their sleeping bags, got in, and immediately went to sleep. But that wasn't the case for Meri. When she checked her Pokédex and saw that it was after midnight, she decided enough was enough. She was really uncomfortable in her soaked underwear. While Meri wasn't about to sleep without any, she had to take care of it now, and hope it was enough to stave off her hunger for at least until they got out of the cave.

Looking over to see if Serenity was asleep or not, it turned out she was facing the other way, so Meri couldn't tell. But even if she were awake, as long as Meri was facing the other, she wouldn't be able to tell. Gathering some last second courage, she turned herself over and grabbed her pajama pants and underwear and slid them down several inches. "Hey, Meri, are you awake? …Meri?" After a minute, without an answer, she remembered that the ear muffs were keeping either of them hearing anything. So she turned over to see if the other girl's eyes were open. But what greeted Serenity's eyes, was much better. She could tell that beneath Meri's sleeping bag, her hand was moving up and down, maybe holding onto something, while her pelvis was pushing into the air. "Augh!" Meri felt something collide into her, sending her rolling across the rocky floor. She couldn't help but cry. "I was so close…I was almost there." She didn't even bother wiping the tears away. A few seconds later when she opened her eyes after feeling some weight place itself on her waist, the sight of Serenity (minus the majority of her sleeping attire) with a huge grin was right above her.

Serenity said something unintelligible before moving her body down towards Meri, their faces getting closer.

Meri was completely shocked and had no clue what to do. She was so fucking horny and desperately needed to get off. But was this what she really wanted? It was so terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. As the girl on top of her shifted around, so did the vibrator that was apparently pressing into both of them; Serenity's lips were quivering now.

"What are you saying?" Meri shouted, putting her hand on Serenity's shoulder, who just returned it with a confused look. Right, ear muffs. But then Meri realized that hers weren't on. The noises of the Pokémon weren't actually that loud. Instead, though, there was that quiet voice now. The more Meri listened for it, the more apparent it became that it was not emanating for Serenity. What's going on? Only one way to find out! She pulled her friends left ear muff away from her ear before it was slapped down a second later.

The decision was met with a glare and what looked like, if Meri's lip-reading skills were up to par, was "What the fuck?!"

Yeah, I might be crazy, she face-palmed, fed up with all this crap. How could she get her message across to Serenity though? Maybe she should try, what was that word, pantomiming? Yeah, that would have to do. She sat up and pushed her friend back some, though not harshly, and made some motions to keep her from advancing. Still lying in her sleeping bag, forgetting that her pants were still down underneath it, she pointed to herself, cupped her ear while moving her head in several directions, and then made a speaking motion with her jaw and lips while using her hand to try to represent voice.

Somewhere along the line, probably at the end, it got lost in translation. Serenity for some reason went behind Meri and took all of her hair at once behind her head. Does she think I'm going to puke? Meri set her arms flat then began waving them at the elbow in a signal for no. It took a moment for Serenity to realize, but then she came back around with a quizzical look. A number of attempts later, and the message finally got through, Meri thought. It was frustrating, to say the least, watching Serenity make strange and confusing motions to try and clear up what Meri thought were fairly clear pantomimes.

It was all enough to make her cry. "I was so close! I almost came and now I might be schizo-whatever-it's-called…" The voice had completely ruined it for her, never mind that Serenity had scared her. The white-haired girl placed her hand on Meri's shoulder. She looked up to see a very concerned girl, who after a few seconds used her finger to ask a question. Meri just shook her head and shrugged her shoulders, not having any actual answer to whether or not she was going insane. Serenity just pulled her into a hug and they held each other until the crying girl's eyes dried.

At least Serenity had the wherewithal to know when to stop going for erotic things. She was given a last squeeze, and to her surprise, a two or three second long kiss on the cheek before Meri pulled away, giving a half-hearted smile. Although it hadn't seemed like she was very good at reading lips during the mime session, Serenity was able to understand when Meri mouthed "Thank you."

Now that it had taken so much time and emotion, Meri simply wasn't willing to let the voice get a free pass. She wanted to find it and maybe show that it wasn't just in her head. Standing up and stretching, she was very quickly forced to shrink back from the cold. Meri could see that Serenity was trying to hold back a laugh. It was pretty funny and embarrassing, she had to admit, so she laughed at herself, Serenity joined in briefly as well. Figuring what the hell, it had been seen now, Meri took of her pajama pants and underwear before quickly changing into fresh panties and putting on her regular travelling pants, followed by the swap of her shirts.

Serenity was confused by what Meri was doing, to which Meri responded by re-pantomiming the signals from earlier, and pointing further into the cave. The big-chested girl, still in only her underwear, shook her head sympathetically and patted on Meri's sleeping bag, having pulled it closer to her own.

Meri simply began rolling her bag up, despite the other girl trying to get her to stop. They gave each other pleading looks, but Serenity finally gave in, getting prepared as Meri waited. When they were both ready, they headed off. They had been walking for more than an hour, without anything encouraging happening, when the voice, while not much louder, was slowly gaining clarity. In her excitement, Meri turned behind her to show that they were getting closer to the very unsure girl behind her. It didn't have much of an effect, but Meri couldn't help but quicken her pace.

"Someone…coming…I can…you…many…cursed…" It still came and went, but there were now full words. But soon, the girls came to a dead end, even though the voice sounded like it continued past it. But it sounded and felt like such thick rock when she pounded it, that Meri didn't think any of their Pokémon would be able break through. There were still several other paths that they could try out, so they kept going, even though Serenity was getting pretty exhausted.

This tunnel was darker than the rest; the stones were no longer white, but more like dark brown or black. A bright red light came from behind Meri. When she checked, Combusken was out, apparently wearing Meri's ear muffs and using a light flame, brightening the area around them. She gave a thumbs up to Combusken's trainer, but she just nodded back, groggily, and waved her to keep going. This tunnel went downwards and winded on for quite a ways. Meri was beginning to get rather exhausted, herself, and decided to sit down. Doubt was setting in again and Serenity had fallen asleep in Combusken's arms at some point, but was now lying on the ground with her Pokémon watching over her.

As frustratingly close to that bell-like, yet ominous voice as she seemed to get at the end of each tunnel, every time they had come to a dead end. Maybe the cave was trying to tell her something. When her legs were feeling a little more rested, Meri stood back up, tapping the dozing fire chicken that it was time to move again. She grabbed her trainer then again began emitting the short stream of fire, but fell behind. Much to Meri's sadness, they came to a dead end, once again. This didn't look good for her case that she didn't belong in an institution or on some sort of powerful medication.

"Goddamnit!" she swore, not wanting to admit anything. She started slamming her fists against the wall in a tantrum before Combusken caught up to her. When the Pokémon did catch up though, she suddenly found herself pounding into thin air, stumbling and falling face first into the ground. What the hell happened? There was no longer any light from the fire, either.

Combusken was apparently just as confused. "Com? Combusken!"

When Meri looked around, there was a wall behind her. She hesitantly tried walking through it, but ended up just hurting her nose even more. "Hey, Combusken? Serenity?" She shouted, hoping to get their attentions. The bird tapped the wall several times. "Yeah, I'm behind this wall somehow. Could you try using Double Kick?"

But when nothing happened, she remembered that she was the only one could even hear a little bit in this place. Meri sat back to think for a few seconds, utterly puzzled as to why a wall would disappear, then return to being impenetrable so quickly. After all, she hadn't heard any stones grating against each other and besides her friend's Pokémon, they hadn't seen any Pokémon in quite some time. Maybe it was whatever the voice was coming from that did it somehow? Maybe just she was supposed to find it? But Meri really didn't want to go alone.

Serenity was woken up a short time later. They both tried out a variety of methods to get to each other, but nothing worked. Not trying to find hidden switches, not attacks from their Pokémon, and not even trying to figure out magic words; they just ended up sounding like morons, not that anyone would know. The good news was that this may mean progress as far as convincing Serenity she was fine, mentally. The voice had become even clearer as well, on this side of the wall. It was saying things about saving people and fulfilling dreams, now, but still was urging her to come nearer. The bad news was they weren't having any luck with the wall and Meri's hands were hurting.

In the ensuing silence of the two girls' failures, Meri took the opportunity to think about her other options. It was either find the voice and see if that led to a solution, or retrace her steps. She had fallen through the wall after pounding on it for several seconds, but that didn't work when repeated, from either side. Then she realized: I went through the wall when Combusken came over with Ember! Combusken's presence alone wasn't causing the passage to open, but either the heat or the light from the fire it was spewing, had.

Although Meri had heard loud thumps from the other side and dust falling on her head soon after, it may not have occurred to Serenity to try a Fire-attack on stone. But how am I supposed to tell her now, when I can't even pantomime it? Every time she thought progress was being made…

The situation was looking hopeless when the ground started to shake, like something was stomping and then suddenly a girl and chicken with fire shooting from it's beak were crashing into her, followed by what looked to be a really pissed-off Exploud. "Oh shit, what did you do?!" Meri screamed, picking herself up to run for her life. "Seriously, why the fuck can't I catch a break?!"

The group ran through several narrow tunnels hoping the giant-mouthed pursuer wouldn't be able to fit, but he somehow did. When they weren't running through tunnels, he would run demolish pillars without being phased. This was really bad. Even though it felt like adrenaline was still pumping through her whole body, by a few minutes in, Meri's legs were starting to get sore, the initial distance they had put between them and the monster was shrinking, and it showed no sign of stopping anytime soon. Unless they thought of something soon, they would be trampled or eaten or something else really not fun.

But then there was a huge crash behind them. Not hearing the charging beast any longer, Meri stopped and looked behind her, causing Serenity to crash right into her. It took a few seconds to regain herself, but she could see a huge pile of boulders and rocks where one of that room's pillars had been standing. The creature's refusal to side step what was keeping the low rock ceiling in place had doomed it.

Both of the girls took a few seconds to check that they were okay. They hugged in relief that the chase had finally come to an end. What Meri hadn't noticed on her first look back however, was that there was a faint light emanating from the new hole in the ceiling. Maybe it wasn't the best idea, but it was almost as though she were moving on her own toward it. She stepped onto the pile of rocks and climbed to the top, then stood on the tips of her toes and grabbing the rock above her. The light was brighter here, even though Meri could see no source of light from anywhere in what looked to be just one giant room. Not spotting any danger, she put her arms on the floor of room and jumped, awkwardly swinging her right leg up, just barely catching the ledge. It was a small struggle to get the rest of herself up, but she made it.

"You made…past the false light…no longer blind…you have almost arrived…my cursed…" it may have just been the odd words, but the voice was chilling here, yet somehow warm.

Meri poked her head down and motioned for Serenity to follow. She was quite hesitant, but eventually relented and climbed up with Meri's help. After they'd brushed themselves off, she began to follow the voice again. Eventually they came upon something fascinating: a large and intricate design carved into the cave wall. It was circular, with a pentagon in the center, some sort of spiral within that, leading to a jewel-like, yellow star in the middle. On the outer edge of the circle, there were what appeared to be some sort of writing, but neither Meri or Serenity had any clue as to what they meant. She brushed her hand over the star when the dark child-esque voice became as clear as it had been. "Free me, and I shall do the same for you-"

It knew her name! She immediately withdrew her hand and put it over her mouth and her eyes opened wide in absolute shock. What was this? How could it know that? Should she trust it? Her thoughts however were interrupted by a menacing growl from behind them.

Turning around, Meri saw an Eevee. Which was rather odd, considering that the only Pokémon remaining here were those that were creating the noise. It was time for another test; Meri again grabbed Serenity's ear muff and pulled it to the side.

"Hey, what are you-?" The two turned look at each other and blinked. "I can't hear the Pokémon anymore!"

The revelation excited and confused the both of them, but for now, Meri had a Pokémon to defeat. Something was different about this Eevee. She wasn't sure what exactly it was, but her best guess was that it was somehow connected to the voice or this mysterious room.

Oshawott was out a second later and stood at the ready to take commands. But then the Eevee stopped glaring and growling. Instead, it sat and looked at Oshawott with the absolute cutest eyes he'd ever seen. Her Pokémon made a little 'aww' noise and let its guard down, giving the Eevee the perfect chance to jump and bite. The otter Pokémon yelped in pain until its opponent let go.

"Water Gun!" she quickly ordered, not wanting to be hesitant any longer, catching the Eevee off guard and knocked it back. But it wasn't done yet, and began charging at Oshawott. "Dodge," she said. After the dodge, she issued her next command. "Tackle!" Oshawott slammed into the Evolution Pokémon. It struggled getting up, so Meri decided it was worth a shot, and threw a Pokéball. It shook once violently, shook again, barely moved the third time, then clicked and beeped with a red light in the center, indicating the Pokémon had been caught. "Yes, I have my own Eevee!" She could do so many different things with it, not to mention they were adorable!

"I'm so jealous!" Serenity exclaimed from behind her. "I've always wanted an Eevee. But I don't know how I could ever decide what to evolve it into."

Meri thought about what she would evolve it into. Vaporeon was probably her favorite of them all, but she had Oshawott already. Jolteon and Umbreon were pretty good too, so maybe she'd pick one of those. But that was something she could wait to worry about. What was important was that star, no bigger than her palm, in the wall. She walked over to it and ran her fingers over it. Disregarding the voice, it was as though she was being drawn to it. Still unsure, but hopeful, she dug her fingers into the tight crevices around it, no doubt getting dirt under every single one of her finger nails, then gripped it. It wasn't exactly easy to pull out; she put one leg on the wall to get more strength, but it wasn't budging, so she put both up and kept pulling with all her might.

Serenity began laughing. "Meri, I don't think it's supposed to come out," she went on, still laughing. "You look so ridiculous right now, you have no idea!"

"Shut up! Just grab my waist and pull!" Meri retorted annoyed by how goddamn stuck this thing was. A moment later she could feel the giggling warmth put herself behind Meri and her arms around her waist, then pulling. Finally, it was enough, and the jewel broke free. The voice stopped and the room dimmed some. Now that it was out of the rock wall, Meri saw that it was a bracelet with strange etchings line with what looked like diamond around the wrist, which felt as though it was made of gold.

Serenity's eyes grew wide and she spoke in astonishment. "Oh my Arceus, that is the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen! It must be worth a ton!"

"It is really pretty and probably is worth a fortune, but there's no way in hell I'll be selling this," Meri looked at her surroundings, half-expecting some sort of Indiana Jones type of trap that would try and kill the two girls casually standing there, but nothing came. "Pulling it out finally got rid of the voice."

"So then, getting rid of it might make it come back?" Serenity asked, scared for her friend's mental well-being.

Meri shook her head and shrugged. "Honestly, I don't know. But I don't want to take any chances," she looked to her friend. "Thanks for sticking with me. Let's get out of here."
