Chapter 12
Damon was pacing in the living room of the Salvatore boarding house. It had been three weeks since Cassie had that incident at the grill and left him, three weeks since he last spoken to her, seen her even. He was worried about her? Was she eating properly? Was she taking care of herself as well as taking care of the situation at hand? Why didn't she even say goodbye to him? Had she said goodbye to him? Did she kiss him again like she did at the incident? He kept saying that because he refused to acknowledge that Cassie had made out with Klaus.
Oh yes, he knew about it. Elena had practically skipped into the house to tell him.
And the worst part was that he didn't have any right to be upset at that. Honestly he wasn't really upset more hurt, and angry. He really believed that Cassie would leave that British ass for good and see that he had been there the whole time. Well, that was all before Cassie left with mason and Daniel to go back to the stupid headquarters.
"she'll come around" Stefan said seeing his older brother thinking about her again.
"she's gone brother" Damon said not turning to look at him "in more ways then one"
Stefan sighed; he understood why she was going and even the need for revenge. But deep down he didn't think she would do it. Not that she couldn't do it, but that she wouldn't do it. He didn't voice this thought, not even to his brother because he knew Damon thought Cassie was willing to do anything. But, the last time he saw her rang through his mind.
Flashback
Cassie was sitting on the railing of wickery bridge, thoughts kept swirling through her mind and she just wanted them to stop.
"What are you doing?" Stefan said as he approached her. He had been out hunting and heard her. When he saw her on the edge of the bridge and a bottle in her hand, he had panicked and didn't know how to handle this situation.
"I need you to remind me" she said her voice quiet and thoughtful.
Stefan was shocked at how sober she sounded and when he sat down next to her he saw that the bottle she was holding hadn't even been opened.
"You thought I was drunk" she stated, not looking at Stefan but at the running water that had stolen her parent's and even Elena's human lives.
Stefan didn't know how to respond, he opened his mouth and then closed it.
"That's ok," she said handing Stefan the bottle "it was a safe bet, especially as of late"
"what do I need to remind you about?" Stefan asked steering away from the current topic.
"why we don't want the veil dropped" Cassie said "why we are so against it."
"Because it will bring about the end of time" Stefan quoted to her, wondering where she was headed with this. "Why? What's bringing this thought about know?"
"I've been on the other side" she said "were right now Jeremy is, and my dad, your friend Lexi, and even my," she trailed off her hand brushing against her stomach.
"So are Mikael and ester and your crazy ass doppelganger" Stefan added.
"Its terrible" she said not really paying attention to what Stefan was saying, "you try so hard to touch something, anything. You scream louder and louder praying that someone will hear you. Time is different over there, a day feels like a year, and eventually you forget. Forget what is like to be touched, forget how to talk even because you stop talking because no one answers you. You begin to question if you were even alive. It's hell Stefan. And it's a hell that my family is experiencing." She finished.
Stefan took her hand "why haven't you told anyone?" he asked.
"I haven't exactly had time to write my memoirs" she sniffed
"But you need to talk to someone" Stefan urged "Damon or Klaus or anyone"
"I've been selfish for too long" she said shaking her head "it's my job to be selfless one, the one with all of the answers and I haven't been, not since Christmas have I've been the person I needed to be"
"Cassie" he said before stopping and taking a breath "Damon mentioned that he might have to start watching you all of the time now" Cassie turned to face Stefan for the first time "were you going to jump?"
Cassie turned back to face the water "I was" she said "I'm just tired Stefan, I'm sick of feeling this pit in my stomach"
Stefan put his arm around her "Cassie, you should go with mason and Daniel" he stated.
"what?" she asked
"you need to get out of here for a little bit, go settle things with the headquarters get all of the information you can on Silas, then come back kick ass, take names and then we are going to deal with all of you're issues" Stefan said
Cassie gave a heartless laugh and then turned serious "what about Elena?" she asked.
"I'll keep looking after her" he offered.
"Stefan I cant ask you to keep doing that" she said
"you're not asking" Stefan said shrugging his shoulders. "Elena was here for me when I had my humanity off, she kept telling me that she loved me and that she was here for me. I'm just doing the same for the woman I love"
Cassie was quiet for a while, thinking over everything leaving meant leaving Klaus and her relationship which needed to be worked on, leaving meant leaving the comfort and support Damon was giving her, and she needed Damon as well, he was a friend to her, a close friend that she held onto.
"I guess I'll pack tonight," she finally said as she finished thinking over her thoughts.
end flashback
Stefan patted Damon on the shoulder and sat on the couch. "she is getting information on Silas" he reassured his brother. "and we are taking care of"
"of Elena the emotionless baby vamp." I know Damon interrupted him while throwing his glass across the wall. Stefan flinched a little at the sound. "and we are doing a great job at that. How many people has Elena killed today?" he continued to rant.
Stefan opened his mouth, trying to reassure his brother that they were doing all they could. But before he had the chance Damon spoke again. He spoke in a tone he didn't think he had ever heard the sound of defeat in his brother's voice, but here it was.
Not even when Damon discovered that Katherine wasn't in the tomb was he ever so defeated.
"I'm tired Stefan" he said "I feel like we are doing the same thing over and over again; saying the same thing. Ever since we showed up in this damn town its been the same thing"
"maybe this time will be different" Stefan offered "we have Cassie now to help and we both know she will do anything and everything for her sister"
Damon scoffed at the thought anything and everything, even if it meant never seeing them again his inner voice sneered at him "maybe" he said as he turned around and headed up the steps when the doorbell rang. "of course" he grumbled as Stefan stood up to answer it.
"If its Liz coming here to tattle on Elena, its your turn" Damon called out to Stefan, not turning around but not going up the steps either.
"It's not Liz" Stefan said.
That was enough for Damon to turn around and see who it was.
"We have a problem mate" he heard and just like that Damon wanted to turn and go back to him room but when the next voice came it was enough to convince him to stay.
"what? A problem like an immortal running around who none of us know what he looks like, that problem?" Stefan said, while he personally didn't have a problem with Klaus, he was on his brother's side through and through.
"It's Bonnie, Stefan" Caroline said peeking her head around Klaus.
Cassie was sitting in her old "office" after a huge lecture from the top guys and a verbal threat that there will be repercussions she was sent here to sit and wait for them to decide a course of action. Daniel and Mason took off towards the library, just in case she was thrown out of here without having chance to gather information. There was a knock on the door and Tobias entered. Tobias was the head honcho for the whole operation, standing at six-three he was in his mid thirties with a bald head and a pair of black horned rimmed glasses. Tobias was a hard ass but once you had proven yourself and earned his respect he would look out for you. Cassie had that at one point and was hoping she hadn't lost what she considered her mentor's respect. "I'm going to break it down for you," he said as he sat in a chair across from her. "We are down three hunters"
"Three?" Cassie asked "who?"
"You, your brother and Vaughn"
"Vaughn?" she asked again, the feeling of losing her breath came back to her, Vaughn was with them when they left to go get Jeremy back. Was he another victim of Silas; was his blood on her hands as well?
Tobias nodded "I'm sorry, I thought you knew given how close the two of you are, but we sent agents out to the island Daniel talked about in his report and we found his body and another one we have yet to identify."
Cassie nodded while doing a checklist through her head of who went to the island and who came back. She couldn't find anyone else who didn't make it. She stored that information in the back of her mind and continued his conversation with Tobias.
"So what are we going to do?" she asked.
"Do you really think that you can stop this threat?" Tobias asked.
Cassie paused for a beat before answering it, "yes, with the people I have and given enough information that I could gather from the library yes"
Tobias nodded "good, that means I didn't stick my neck out for you for nothing. So here is what we decided, you can have whatever resources you need in order to take care of Silas and get revenge on Katherine pierce," he said.
Cassie raised an eyebrow "no offense but I have been working with you guys enough to know that if something sounds to good to be true, it normally is"
"A couple guys called for your punishment, the fact that you are still romantically involved with an original doesn't help, but truth is we need you and if that means that they are left wanting something and not getting it, then so be it." Tobias answered.
"I sense a but coming" Cassie retorted.
Tobias nodded "seems like I trained you well" he commented, "in return for this, we need you to come and train a group of hunters, and leave us a training routine."
"And?"
"And we part as allies, I hope that we have a strong relationship to honor this" Tobias said.
"Of course" Cassie said "but do honestly expect me to think that I train a group of rag tag hunters and we sweep everything under the rug?"
Tobias nodded "yes, because that is what I'm offering you, for this one time only, Cassandra"
"I'll take it," she answered without hesitation "of course I will"
Tobias nodded and held out his hand "I believe Daniel is waiting for you in the library."
Cassie shook his hand and stood up "thank you" she said.
Klaus walked into the mansion and immediately went straight towards the bar.
Elijah walked behind him, "Klaus" he tried to comfort him.
"Enough!" Klaus yelled turning to face his brother "I'm done brother I don't want to hear any more"
Elijah rubbed his face as he watched Klaus to turn back to the bar. Tonight hadn't gone well at all. Klaus was trying, he had suggested getting the Salvatore's involved when Caroline and Rebecca came to them and explained what was going with the Bennet girl. Apparently the last sacrifice was witches and bonnie had lured 13 of them into the town.
Klaus was trying so hard and even the eldest Salvatore was holding his tongue, everyone was trying to prevent the expression triangle to be complete.
But they failed.
The triangle had been completed.
And no one was taking this harder then Klaus was.
Klaus turned back to Elijah "what's the point Elijah?" he asked. "why are we even bothering to help the riff raff?"
Elijah just sighed and didn't answer the question "is this sudden change in attitude because Cassandra is gone?"
Klaus didn't answer that question and sat on the couch, Elijah followed suit.
"She said she didn't think she would be coming back" Klaus said "and she didn't even say goodbye"
"Well if I heard correctly she didn't really say goodbye to anyone" Elijah said, "it seems that goodbyes isn't something she is good at either"
Klaus scoffed and took a drink, "I don't need to hear about how much the two of us alike" he stated.
"Maybe you do" Elijah said "maybe you need to hear that because then you will realize that Cassandra needs you by her side"
"She said" Klaus began.
"She said a lot of things before everything happened" Elijah said "and tell do you not say things like that to your siblings, dagger them even but yet wish that they will remain here of their own accord?"
Klaus fell silent and then stood up; he set his drink on the table. He looked at his older brother and nodded his head and then walked out of the house.
"Its about bloody time" Rebecca said as she came into the room "after sneaking around and hearing Elijah and Klaus talk she felt happy that he finally had some sense knocked into him."
Elijah gave Rebecca a small smile "I told you he needed some time and then he would just get over it himself."
"Well he sure took his time" Rebecca complained as she flopped on the couch next to her older brother.
Elijah just chuckled and put his arm around his little sister.
"On a scale of one to ten how bad is that this expression triangle being finished?" Rebecca asked.
"Eleven" Elijah answered.
Cassie was exhausted, it had been a grand total of three and a half weeks since she left mystic falls and all she had done was have meeting after meeting. Meetings with Mason about Katherine, meetings with Daniel about Silas, meetings with Tobias about everything that was going on. Not to mention the amount of time she was logging in the archive files. She just needed something concrete. The probable with being a thousand years old is that hardly of the information that is written down is right. She felt like she was drowning with useless information and the words started to swim in front of her.
"Screw it," she mumbled as she scooted the seat out behind her "I'm done" she grew so frustrated. She knew the gang in mystic falls was counting on her and here she was failing them… again.
She screamed in frustration as she swept an arm across the table, letting the book and paper tumble to the ground. She closed her eyes and rubbed them with the heel of her hand, quelling the tears of anger that were threatening to spill.
That was an accomplishment that Cassie was proud of, she hadn't cried since she left mystic falls, haven't thought about killing herself or anything like that. All of her thoughts were processed on doing what she needed to do it.
She could feel it, this fire in her being relit.
Cassie was back.
And both Silas and Katherine should run.
She knelt down and started to pick back up the books that she had knocked over she placed a stack on the table and noticed that someone else had joined her to help pick up the books.
"Nik" she said looking at him "what are you?"
Klaus just put a finger on her lips, "I'm here to help," he said showing her the pile of books he had in his hand.
Cassie nodded and Klaus removed his finger, to replace it with his lips.
Cassie could feel herself lean into him, even with the both of them squatting an Klaus having a stack of books in his hands, she just felt good the closer she was to him.
Klaus soon broke the kiss and went right back to picking the books up.
Cassie sat there for a beat or two and then snapped back into her mind as she finished picking up the last of them.
She saw Klaus sitting at the chair next to her, already immersed in a book.
She smiled and picked on up for herself, she scooted her chair closer to him and snuggled into his side, loving the warmth she felt emanate from him.
Klaus put an arm around her and she got into a comfortable position.
The two of them kept reading for a half an hour when Cassie finally spoke, neither one of them looking up at each other.
"Thank you" she said.
She felt Klaus drop a kiss on top of her head in response and then the two of them just continued reading and researching.
AN: well there we go, another chapter
so here is the deal, the thing i hate about the vampire diaries is elena constantly flip flopping between stefan and damon. so i've been trying to keep the line clear between the two. i can guarantee you there will be no cheating, no backstabbing. i really want cassie to be able to make her choice and stay with it. so if you think that she is becoming "elena" and toying with damon and klaus, let me know.
another note is that this story will stop at the end of season four and the next one will pick up at season five, with college and everything i have decided to write the entire story and then publish it on a regular basis which means that the next story in this series will not be out until season five is over and the entire story has been written.
but never fear, i have both my marvel and supernatural stories in the final phase of completion so there will be more stories for you guys in between.
lastly i have to say i'm kinda bummed at the lack of interest last chapter, i'm never going to withhold a chapter until i get a certain amount of reviews but i'll issue a challenge for every 8 reviews i get i'll release a snippet of the stories. the first being something from this story, then marvel, then supernatural. and then repeating. hopefully this plus the story will bring in some more reviews.
and if you are someone who never felt the need to leave a review as a former reader only i now understand is that is what we use for feedback, comments and the such, if something isn't agreeing with you let me know!
ok, i think i'm good for this chapter, hope you guys have a good easter!
