Chapter 13
Silent POV
I watched as Professor Ross and Talon exited a room punching in a code on a key pad. They both looked irritated and were whispering harshly back and forth.
Where are you Silent? Why haven't you saved me?
My head shot up at the thoughts that floated through the air, and my eyes drifted towards the closed door. Talon and Professor Ross had disappeared around the corner so I made my move. Hovering my hand over the keypad I typed in the code I watched Talon type in moments ago. It glowed green and the door clicked open.
Once inside it shut behind me and I gasped at the sight. Shadow hung almost limply from the cuffs restraining her wrists and ankles, the one around her waist was unclasped.
"Shadow!" I ran across the room to her and tried, unsuccessfully, to break the cuffs. Thick metal. Great. Sighing I placed a hand under her chin and lifted her head, when I did a sharp pain shot through my skull.
FlashBack
6 year old Silent had watched them drag his best friend Shadow away from there cages an hour or two ago, it was hard to tell time in this windowless room. He pressed his face against the cold metal bars again before reaching between them grasping the lock that kept the cage door closed.
"Stupid thing" He mumbled gripping it tightly and yanking it down hard. To his surprise it snapped off instantly and the door swung open pulling him out by the arm, causing him to topple onto the floor.
He dusted himself off and jumped over the fallen cage and hurried over to the main doors. Peaking out the door quickly, he hurried out and down the hall in the direction he had seen them take Shadow. Whitecoats walked past him, but none even glanced in his direction.
"Shadow?" He called out softly and heard a scream of response several doors down the hall. His bare feet padded down the hall as he raced to the door. Being taller than the average 6 year old he was able to seeing through the window on the door.
Shadow was being held up by metal chains that hung from the ceiling. They circled her wrists and another came around her waist. Her face was stained with tears and two of the whitecoats were screaming at her. Talon stood to the side trying to calm her down as she struggled. Silent flinched hearing the thoughts that ran through her head.
'Stop! Please stop! It hurts!'
Silent shoved open the door and through himself onto the nearest whitecoat, who held a small black remote, and forced him to the ground hitting him hard with his fist.
"How did he get out of his cage?" The other hissed grasping Silent by the back of his t-shirt yanking him upwards. He shot out his wings slapped the guy in the face with them before tumbling to the floor. Running he grasped the metal chain around Shadow's waist and was surprised when It pulled away without any effort and did the same to her wrists. Her body slumped forward but Silent caught her, she weighed almost nothing to him.
"Shadow?" He whispered watching her carefully. Her eyes were filled with fear as she looked up at him.
"You shouldn't have come" Her voice was frail and weak, "They'll just punish us both."'
She was right. Silent was grasped roughly by the back of his neck by an erasers furry claws and Shadow's body crumbled to the floor. He fought and thrashed against the grip of the eraser as he pulled him out of the room and carried him back to his cage, or well to a cage with a different type of lock, automated lock. But one thing never left his mind. He hated hearing Shadow scream in pain.
End of Flashback
I raised my throbbing head to look up at Shadow, in time to meet her red eyes. A smile played on my lips as I saw her.
"Are you alright?" I asked, surprised my voice didn't crack. She shook her head. "What's wrong?" She shook her head again and I moved my hand from under her chin letting her lift her head up.
"A Shock collar?" I curled the tip of my fingers under the brim and tugged at the thin metal feeling a pulse of energy shoot through me. Shadow's eyes snapped shut and she clenched her fists. "Sorry, just let me get this thing off." With a flick of the wrist the metal snapped in half and I was able to pull it off without any effort.
"T-Thank you" Shadow whispered, "Can you get the others?" I looked again at the small metal straps that were around her wrist like handcuffs.
"The metals too thick." I exclaimed tapping my fingers against the metal. "Is there some type of machine to unhook them?"
"That computer near the door. There's some kind of a pass code on it." I moved over to the computer brushing my fingers over the keyboard watching the screen come to life. It required a three digit password.
"Do you know it?" I asked looking over my shoulder at her. She shook her head.
"It starts with a 5 that's all I know." I took a chance and typed 5...1...6 Click! Silent heard the cuffs click and hurried over in time to catch Shadow as the cuffs released her. Her body slumped against me weakly, but I supported her easily.
"Come on, let's get out of here" I Ushered her swinging her upwards so she was easier to carry. Tucking one arm behind her back and the other under her leg I hurried back out the door, after typing in the code of course, and down the hall away from the room.
When I came to my room I opened the door and walked inside setting her down on the bed carefully. She seemed beyond exhausted, but I wanted to see if she had any burn marks on her wrists or ankles.
"Are you hurt?" I asked her, turning her head so she could see me.
"No" She mumbled forcing herself to sit up, "But I need to get out of this shirt. It has wires in it. They'll shock me." Not wanting to run across the hallway to her room I grabbed a long sleeved black t-shirt from the closet and handed it her, then turned my back so she could change.
"Thanks, you can look now." I turned back to her watching her crawl under the covers and rest her head on the pillows, "You wont let them get me again right?"
"I promise." I sat next to her on the bed listening to her breathing slow and calm as she fell asleep. Smiling I reached out and ran my fingers through her short hair. I didn't know what it was about her, but I wanted to keep her safe.
