Santana's POV

It had been exactly six months since Dani and I had gotten in a relationship and I figured it was time I stepped up my game and showed my girlfriend how much she meant to me.

So on a warm spring afternoon, as I was on my way home from work, I asked the taxi driver to make a quick stop at the local flower shop. I jumped out from the backseat and entered the tiny, brick red building on the left side of the road, with colorful banners and flower stands in front of its entrance.

Upon pushing down on the door handle, I caught a whiff of fresh-cut roses and greenery.

Behind the cashier desk was an elderly woman, her hair gray as the stormy sky, standing curiously with a smile so kind plastered on her face that when I first glanced at her, I felt like it was my deceased grandfather looking right back at me.

'Good afternoon' I said automatically, my eyes wandering aroundthe shop.

On a shelf to my right were dozens of giant vases, filled with different shades and types of roses, lilies and so many flowers I'd never seen before. Their sweet scent wafted up my nose and I wanted to take all of them home, so Dani and I could marvel at them for the rest of the week.

'Good afternoon, dear' the woman responded. I winced.

'Are these painted?' I pointed at a bunch of blue roses on the top shelf.

She quickly nodded. 'Yes, I was experimenting' while saying that, she stepped out from behind the counter. 'They turned out to be pretty... unique, huh?'

'Indeed' I agreed.

I walked around the shop, examining all the flowers; I found orange tulips, several buckets of gerberas and a kind of tropical flower that very strongly resembled a parrot.

'Can I help you with something?' the lady asked, her shoulder leant against the side of the wooden shelf.

'I'm looking to buy something for my... girlfriend'

'I think you should take roses' she kindly answered, the smile not fading from her face for a single second, even after I'd obviously hinted at my homosexuality. 'Roses are always perfect'

She raised a red rose from the vase in front of her and extended it towards me, while repeatedly emphasizing her conviction that roses always do the trick.

I asked her to make me a bouquet with ten red ones and some greenery. She prepared it within a couple of minutes, then wrapped it up in a ridiculous amount of darkpaper and handed it over.

'Anniversary?' she glanced at me from behind the counter.

'Six months' I responded, squirming a bit, because adults showing interest in my relationships always startled me.

'She seems like a lucky girl'

'I'm the lucky one'

She flashed another kind-hearted smile at me.

I paid for the bouquet, then hopped back into the taxi and – for completely and totally inexplicable reasons – left a huge tip for the driver once he'd pulled up to Dani's apartment. Our apartment.

I knew she hated when I used the bell, because it scared the living hell out of her, so I knocked on the front door twice. My girlfriend flung the door open, seemingly ready to pull me inside and pin me against the wall.

'Hello' Dani greeted me, her voice warm and soothing, just like the light breeze on a scorching summer night.

'Happy sixth monthversary, baby!' I said after she'd closed the door behind me.

I pulled her in a tight hug, arms possessively wrapping around her waist, while my lips throbbed from wanting so badly to kiss her.

'These are beautiful' Dani admitted, when I handed her the bouquet. She rushed to the kitchen and quickly put them in a vase.

'Not nearly as beautiful as you' I replied, sitting her onto the counter and tilting my head to the side so I could peck her lips.

'You're such a cheeseball' Dani purred.

She wrapped her legs around my waist, managing to close the gap between us until I could feel her breath tickle my cheeks.

'I'm thinking we could visit the Grand Canyon this weekend' she offered.

I pressed my index finger against her slightly swollen lips.

'I have already made plans for the weekend'

'Really?' Dani playfully tapped the tip of my nose, the excitement sparkling behind her eyes.

'You've been making some serious effort to get this relationship to work and I'm tired of always having to put you through all my drama, so I've decided to only focus on being a good girlfriend to you from now on'

'You are a good girlfriend'

'I need to prove that to the both of us'

Dani slightly nodded. I leant in to kiss her, my palms automatically sliding underneath her t-shirt, tracing her curves and the waistband of her sweatpants.

She played with the hem of my skirt, contemplating pulling it upwards. I moaned as she roughly groped my ass.

The annoying sound of her phone buzzing interrupted our make out session; Dani reached into her pocket, pulling out the fragile, white device and furrowing her brows upon reading the text she'd received.

'What is it?' I asked, polite enough not to peek at the screen, but too curious to disregard Dani's facial expression.

She looked downwards.

'It's... nothing'

I gently lifted her chin, forcing her to make eye contact with me.

'What is it?' I repeated, trying to sound more patient and calm than a minute ago.

'It was my mom, but it's okay' she sidestepped giving a proper answer with a dismissive wave of her hand. 'Now where were we?'

Her thighs tightened around my waist as Dani's fingers tenderly traced my spinal cord, spreading sexual arousal all over me as if it was wildfire.

I wasn't going to let her get away with this, but as her tongue gently parted my lips and the heat radiating from her every move caused goosebumps to appear all over my skin while she moaned into my mouth, I thought it could wait.

As a solution to my internal dilemma, Dani quickly got rid of her t-shirt, a guttural moan escaping her lips as my teeth carefully grazed her collarbone, leaving barely visible love bites on her skin.

I buried my face in her cleavage, kissing and sucking on her breasts while unclasping her bra with my left hand.

Dani threw her head back as my lips made contact with her nipples. I tenderly pulled them between my teeth, sucking on them until my girlfriend deeply exhaled, silently pleading for more.

I looped my finger in the waistband of her pants, pulling it downwards. Dani lifted her waist so I could pull them off and I kneeled in front of her.

As my lips began wandering about her inner thighs, Dani tangled her fingers in my hair.

I was determined to leave hickeys this time and apparently, she didn't mind.

I removed her thong, threw it across the kitchen floor while grinning at Dani's tortured face. She bit her lower lip, anxiously waiting for my tongue to finish her up.

I slowly pressed my lips against her throbbing flesh. Dani squeezed her eyes shut, rapid breaths escaping her lips as my tongue moved in circular motion around her most sensitive spot.

Not much before she reached the edge of her ground-breakingpleasure, I inserted two fingers into her vagina.

'Baby, that feels so good' she moaned.

I quickened the pace, my fingers rhythmically sliding into and out of her while my girlfriend spread her legs wider with every thrust.

Dani grabbed onto the edge of the counter. I heard a thud from the left, but I was too busy pleasuring her to sense anything else around us.

She moaned my name, to which I replied with a deep thrust, swirling my tongue around her clit.

In the space of a minute, Dani's walls tightened around my fingers, sweatdrops rolling down her neck as she surrendered to her lust.

She threw her head back, silently cursing and moaning in pleasure.

I didn't stop until her muscles loosened around my fingers.

As I got back up on my feet, Dani pulled me close, wrapping her arms around me like a baby monkey. We stayed in the same position for minutes; I could feel her heart beat through her chest.

'Let's go to bed' she nibbled on my ear. My knees nearly buckled.

'I... can't'

'That's bullshit' Dani purred, her lips discovering every inch of my neck.

'We... don't have... time'

Dani uttered a disapproving groan.

'What on Earth have you planned for the weekend?'

'Get dressed' I dodged the question with a quick peck on her mouth. 'Unless you want to come naked, because that's totally fine with me'

I wanted to draw back, but Dani dug her nails into my back, giving me her trademark puppy eyes look that she knew would melt my resistance.

'Don't make me spoil it for you' I implored her.

She sighed. 'Okay. But can you at least tell me if I should pack any clothes... or something?'

'Everything we need is already packed' I grinned, foreseeing that she would ask that question.

Dani raised her brows as her lips curled into an appreciative smile.

'Well, I'm looking forward to it... I guess'

And so we had a shower, got changed and carried two giant bags into the parking lot where I motioned Dani to hop into the passenger seat and she narrowed her eyes, but did as told and so I hesitantly turned the key in the ignition, wondering how I'm going to keep our destination a secret when my girlfriend leered at me in a way that made me want to reveal every single thought I'd ever formulated in my mind. Starting with the sexual fantasies, obviously.

'Are we there yet?' Dani whined an hour later, pulling her knees up to her chest, then putting them back off, squirming in her seat like a bored 5-year-old.

'Soon' I replied, making a sharp left turn as I pulled off the highway.

She loudly exhaled and tapped her fingers on the hand break, then bent over to push a random combination of buttons on the radio.

The voice of a cheesy male singer expressing his love for the woman of his dreams filled the air, but not for so long as Dani quickly changed the stations, approving of the upcomingpop-rock song with a slight nod.

I turned up the volume. She leaned back, singing along to the music.

'You look so perfect standing there, in my American Apparel underwear...'

I felt my lips curl into a smile.

'Come on, sing along!' Dani nudged my shoulder. 'I know you love this song!'

I joined in at the next chorus. Dani's silly dance moves made me laugh so hard that I nearly crashed into a lamp post.

'Your lipstick stain is a work of art, I got your name tattooed in an arrow heart' we practically screamed, still amazed by the harmony of our voices.

'And I know now, that I'm so doooooown' Dani finished the chorus, bursting into laughter at the end of the line.

My face was going numb from smiling so wide.

We left the highway and the suburbia behind. I drove up a crooked road with shrubbery on its sides and just as I was starting to worry that I might have taken a wrong turn somewhere along the way, I came across the narrow street that I knew would lead to our destination.

A good ten minutes later, I parked the car in front of a modern style house with a perfectly maintained front yard and pruned rose bushes on both sides.

'This is my aunt's weekend house' I opened the car door for Dani.

'I'm not the slightest bit surprised' she let out a chuckle.

I took our bags out of the trunk. Dani lifted one with each hand and floundered towards the house.

'You really don't have to -'

Before I could finish, she positioned them in front of the carved wood door.

'You're slow' she remarked, a half-smile appearing in the corner of her mouth.

Dani traced her fingers along the charcoal rock panels covering the outside walls. Her gaze was fixated on me as I unlocked the door and flung it open.

A perfect example of my aunt's love for contemporary design unraveled in front of us; the light walls, the grayish sofa standing in front of the empty fireplace, the chrome bathroom faucets and kitchen appliances, the silk curtains drawn behind the windows and a high glass door to my right showcased the kind of luxurious clarity and simplicity I had never seen anywhere else. The dark, wooden floor, large windows and the lack of decoration on the walls provided a tight, open space.

'This place is amazing' Dani gasped.

'That's the bedroom' I pointed to the left, in the direction of a light brown swing door. My girlfriend grinned at me.

I laced our fingers and guided her to the glass door, carefully cracking it open and beckoning Dani to follow me.

'And this is the terrace'

Her gaze dropped at the floor lamps built inside the sparkling marble floor and the two armchairs standing opposite each other. The terrace overlooked the whole suburban area and the view was beautiful as ever.

'How did you even get the keys to this house?!' she inquired, while taking a seat on the closest armchair and pulling me onto her lap.

It was a warm spring afternoon, light rays of sunshine beamed through the clouds, illuminating an evergreen forest on the horizon.

'Aunt Carmen gave it to me as a 'sorry your grandmother ambushed you, please accept my apology in the form of a key to my weekend house' kind of gift'

Dani laughed.

'I seriously can't deal with your family'

I buried my face in the crook of her neck. 'I know. They're insufferable'

'I hope you don't turn out to be as complicated, because I have no weekend houses to offer to you as an apology'

'Asshole'

She chuckled.

'Wait, is that a lake?' Dani wondered, gazing into the distance.

'Does it look like a lake?'

She narrowed her eyes in an attempt to make out certain parts of the panorama. I lifted my head off of her shoulder.

'Let's go take a look' I offered. Dani agreed.

And there it was. A small lake in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by patches of water reed.

The sunshine glistened on the water, creating the impression of a thousand shiny diamonds imprisoned underneath the surface.

'What is it with you and lakes?' Dani shook her head.

I shrugged.

'I've liked them since I was a kid'

That conclusion made me think of my grandfather and Dani, as if she had been reading my mind all along, grabbed me by the waist and came up with an idea:

'Why don't we get into that boat?'

A lonely, wooden boat floated on the water a couple offeet to the left, moored to the only dock in sight.

'I was not planning to die just yet' I remarked.

Dani rolled her eyes in an annoyed manner and pulled me to the dock, continuously explaining why I should change my mind about hopping in.

'Fine, fine, just leave me alone' I finally gave in.

Dani flashed a victorious smile at me.

She made me sit into the boat, then started throwing boating terminologies around that completely wentover my head.

She explained why I had to stay close to the centerline and enthusiastically went on about the importance of staying low and even though I didn't understand half the things she said, I nodded and stayed still, impatiently waiting for her to untie the knot that immobilized the boat.

A gust of wind nearly threw her off balance, but Dani managed to sit down facing me, her hands grasping the paddles.

'Are you ready for a ride?' she grinned.

I hesitantly nodded. She dipped the blade of the paddle into the water and pulled it towards herself. The boat began gliding over the water, gradually leaving the lakeside behind.

'How do you know so much about boating?' I asked, the sound of tiny waves forming underneath the boat muffling my voice.

Dani tightened her grip on the shaft and the blade quietly knocked against the stern as she continued the motion of forward strokes.

'My dad used to teach me when I was a kid' she answered with an inexpressive face. 'He had this boat, used to call it Benvolio. Don't ask why' she added as I opened my mouth to utter the obvious question.

Her muscles tensed up, then loosened as the blades pushed the water behind us.

'You look so sexy right now' I quietly remarked.

Dani scoffed. 'Liar'

'Sometimes I wonder what our kids would be like'

Her eyes bulged out.

'Can you imagine little Danis and Santanas running around?' I teased her, laughing at the horror written all over my girlfriend's face.

Dani tossed her hair back.

'Truth is, I'm not quite ready to share you with anyone yet' she smiled.

She dropped the blade into the water on both sides, decelerating the speed and leaning back so the boat stopped gliding.

'That would be a proper excuse, but you're not getting away with it' I reached out to pinch her leg.

Dani jumped from the sudden touch and the boat creaked underneath us.

'I'm sorry' I managed to squeeze out, struggling to stifle the laughter.

She narrowed her eyes, pulling a playfully insulted face.

'Okay then'

Dani reached out to grip the paddles.

The boat wobbled as she deliberately shifted her weight from one side to the other. I held on to the edge so tight that my knuckles became pale.

'Don't do this' I warned her.

'Come on, baby, it's just water' Dani chuckled, shaking the paddles.

She grabbed both shafts and lifted them out of the water, then threw them back in, causing the boat to float very unsteadily. I pulled my knees up to my chest, giving her a long series of nasty looks.

'I'm not kidding, Dani, this is not –'

Before I could finish, she flipped the boat over.

My vision blurred as we both splashed into the lake, the boat turning upside down and floating away as I lifted my head out from under the water.

I managed to get on my feet, cursing and spitting out about five ounces of dirty liquid.

'Dani?'

I looked around; she was nowhere to be found.

'Dani, come on'

Dread and panic suffocated me as I looked around over and over again, finding absolutely no trace of my girlfriend. I couldn't tell if it was water or sweatdrops dribbling from my face, but the worry splintering my ribcage made me feel dizzy.

I clumpedtowards the boat, my steps as heavy as lead. The water was smooth and calm, as if nothing unusual had happened in the past couple of minutes.

I narrowed my eyes, examining the bottom of the boat, the water reeds and the clouds blackening against the sky.

Then a second later, two strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind, accompanied by light-hearted laughter. I quickly turned around to face her, my hands removing her arms from around me.

'Are you out of your motherfucking mind?'

Dani furrowed her brows. Her arms refused to let my waist go and the closeness of her body made it nearly impossible to lash out.

'What are you on about? The water is like two feet deep!' she claimed with her arms outstretched.

I retreated so as to not make direct physical contact with her any longer.

'There was no way you could know that!' I shouted, my voice raspy and distorted from the indignation. I was so mad that tears began welling up in my eyes.

'I was trying to be funny'

'This is not fucking funny, you jerk!' I yelled at her. Dani reached for my hand, but I pushed her away.

Waterdrops splattered all over my face, but I couldn't be bothered to wipe them off. Dani cocked her head to the side.

'Okay, you're right. I'm sorry'

'Sorry is NOT going to cut it'

I turned around with my back facing Dani, accidentally treading upon a branch underneath the water. A silent crack and dozens of curse words later, I hastily marched in the direction of the lakeside, convinced that Dani was following me.

'What do you want me to do?' she shouted from behind me. 'It was a joke, for fuck's sake!'

'For the thousandth time, it was NOT funny' I shouted back, my foot getting stuck in the mud as I stamped it on the gooey ground.

I was so pissed at Dani that when she was only a few steps away, I quickly dragged my foot out from under the mud, so she couldn't catch up to me. As a result, we were yelling at each other like two idiots, in the middle of some dirty lake, soaking wet and shaking with rage.

'I'm sorry that you're too freaking uptight to appreciate a joke' her voice rang through my ears, causing my heart to drop into my stomach and my eyes to start watering.

When I turned around to retort, she stood still in front of me, knowing that she had taken it too far. Before I could've stopped it, my arm rose from the water, slapping Dani across the face with all the anger her stupid prank had built up inside me.

'Was that uptight as well?'

She gazed into my eyes, her glance filled with so much hurt that it shattered my heart into pieces.

'No, it was simply disappointing'

I clenched my jaw. Dani got around me and strode towards the lakeside. As I watched her climb out of the water and disappear behind the wooden front door, an insufferable feeling washed through me that I later realized was an endless fear of losing her.
