As I got ready to answer Kimmy's call, my doctor called me back to her office. Between Kimmy and the doctor, I answered. Something could be wrong.
"Kimmy! Is everything ok? Are the babies ok?" I asked in a panic.
"I'm fine and the babies are fine, however Jimmy could be better," Kimmy said.
I could hear the panic in her voice and my heart sped up. "What's wrong?!
"Well, I had to go down to the basement to get him this morning, he wasn't awake."
I could feel the blood draining from my face. I sunk down into the waiting room chair.
"I'm coming home," I said grabbing my purse.
"Don't do that, I'm on my way to the hospital," Kimmy said.
That's when I heard a car door slam.
I stood up and went to the front desk to cancel my appointment. "Hospital? Which one?"
Kimmy told me and I raced out the door. An extremely confused DJ followed as I got in the car.
I had tears streaming down my face.
"Steph, what is going on?" DJ asked as she buckled up.
"We have to get to the hospital," I said turning the corner.
"Hospital? Is way too early for Kimmy to have the babies," DJ said.
I shook my head. "Something's wrong with Jimmy."
DJ and I met Kimmy in the hospital waiting room with Jimmy, who was slumped over in the chair beside her.
"Jimmy what happened? What's going on?" I spewed out lunging to his side.
He had sweat dripping from his four head and he was as pale as a white sheet. "Babe you're burning up." I rushed to a nearby bathroom to get a cool paper towel, but when I got back he was being wheeled away.
I fell into the seat next to Kimmy and DJ. "What's going on?" I leaned my head against DJs shoulder like a little kid.
"Jimmy has to have his appendix taken out," Kimmy said calmly.
I looked at her with fear in my eyes. "How are you so calm?"
She shrugged her shoulders. "He's my brother, he's strong."
"He is. I just, I can't lose him," I said twirling my engagement ring around and and around.
Hours later I woke up with a sore back. Kimmy was pacing back-and-forth in DJ was coming back with three bottles of water.
A doctor came out. "Is the family of James Gibbler here?"
Kimmy spoke up. "Over here. I am his sister."
The doctor sat down. "His surgery went well and he is just now waking up. You may go see him if you would like."
I stood up to walk back to the room, but the doctor stopped me. "I'm sorry family only."
"I'm his fiancé," I told him.
"Come on. I'll walk you through his care instructions," the doctor said.
Kimmy looked exhausted. I turned to her. " do you mind?"
She put her hand on her growing stomach. "You go. Your daughters are kicking around like crazy and I need to rest my feet."
I smiled weakly and followed the doctor down a long hallway. All thoughts of my visit a few hours earlier to the fertility clinic disappeared and all my focus was channeled toward Jimmy.
