Crying my hearts out that no one seems to want to write a review even though I know a lot of you guys are reading!
Well here's CHAPTER 13.
Pam Fields' POV
A slightly gray-haired man in teal scrubs walked up to me right when I finished speaking to the girls. The man, who was not the same doctor that spoke to me earlier about Emily's case seemed calm and collected when he began speaking.
"Hello, you must be Mrs. Fields.", a candid introduction from the doctor. "And you must be the father, Mr. Fields."
I didn't notice Wayne coming up right beside us; "Yes, yes. Call me Pam, please."
"And you are?" Wayne had a little edge on his voice, but politely nonetheless.
"Excuse me, my apologies. I am Dr. Wong, and I will be the surgeon who will be taking care of Emily tonight and for the next few days", he proclaimed.
"What do you mean…surgery?" I asked, confused.
"It seemed that Emily is not responding from the medicines that we have administered. At this time, it is imperative to act quickly. While Emily was just admitted a few hours ago, I would suggest performing a Coronary Artery bypass surgery for her as soon as possible. She is in stable conditions, so the surgery itself doesn't need to be performed until she has slightly recovered from the attack."
"I see.", I saw worry buried under Wayne's face, "And what are the implications?"
"Well, to give a definitive number, there is a great 98% of success; however there is also the chance of getting severe to mild complications, such as stroke or just mild disorientation. All of it is up to Emily on how her body will react and recover. This is the time where family and friends are important to support her."
There was a tear forming at the corner of my eyes, but I knew I needed to be optimistic for our family. Wayne's expression looked so definite and stern. "Thank you, doctor. We really appreciate everything. Can we see Emily?", as I wiped away the tears.
"Yes, but only in a few minutes, she is in Intensive Care right now."
I nodded to the doctor and told Wayne to go ahead as I needed to tell the girls about the update. He gripped my hand before parting and disappeared with the doctor through the two doors.
Wayne Fields in the ICU
Dr. Wong led me through a private room where a nurse was standing the bedside where my daughter was laying down. My heart ached for the scene that I saw, and the image will stay with me forever. As a father, I couldn't bear the idea of my daughter leaving this world before me, or any parent losing their child.
"I'll give you both some space." I heard the doctor say as he gave a gesture to the nurse to leave the room.
"Hey… Dad," I heard my sweet Emmy say.
She had a slight smile on her pale face, even though she looked so weak with all the tubes and machines hooked on her. I went around the hospital bed and sat next to her.
"Hi sweetie, how are you feeling?" while I softly grip her frail hand. My heart sank as I mustered everything that I got to show some optimism with her state.
"Tired… aching." She said, barely making out everything with the ventilation machine making so much noise for her to breathe. "Where's Mom?"
It was almost a whisper, and I had to get closer to be able to hear. "She's speaking to your friends right now, telling them how you are. Everybody is here, waiting for you to get better."
The smile on her face disappeared and she looked away from me and stared at the wall in front of her "What did the doctors say?"
"That you will be fine, and you just need surgery."
"…when?", gripping my hand a little tighter this time.
"In a few days. It's okay, we'll all be here." I smiled and we looked at each other for a while. A smile came back to her face and I couldn't be more than proud of her for being so strong in all of this.
Pam Fields' POV
I stood by the door while both of them softly spoke to each other. When I knew it was time to go in, Wayne looked up to me and smiled. I couldn't help but smile back to both of them, even with the situation in hand. I sat next on the empty seat across Wayne and held Emily's hand. I felt her slightly jump as she didn't know that I was there.
"I'm so sorry honey, it's just me Mom." I was beginning to notice that she had a difficult time turning her body and all her senses wasn't up to everything they should be. I felt her fingers relax in mine and she slowly turned her head to my direction.
"Hey…" was all she could say with a smile on her face. I smiled back, grateful for having a strong-willed daughter. Wayne quietly and carefully let go of Emily's hand, standing up from where he sat and told us that he had to make a few phone calls to Texas.
"I'll be back in a bit, sweetie," as he leaned in to kiss her forehead.
When he left the room, Emily's smile disappeared and all I could imagine was the images of the video popping in her mind.
"Mom…" she softly said as I leaned in closer. "I-I don't remember how I got here…"
"What do you mean sweetie?" I asked, a little confused.
She let out a sigh, "I don't remember…" while she looked straight ahead, "what happened to get me a heart attack…"
Wheels were turning in my head, I was worried for her memory loss, I was simply relieved that it was one less trauma in her life. My eyebrows was still cringing, "What do you remember?"
Staring at the wall in front of her, she slowly bit her lip, trying desperately to remember the events of the other night. "I remember, taking a bunch of my medicine, then falling asleep, then waking up here."
I leaned closer to her and kissed her forehead and told her that it was the medicine that caused the attack, but she was going to be okay. I knew I shouldn't have lied to her, that it was more than just her pills, but there was no good coming out of telling her about everything.
