CHAPTER 13

I watched as what I had just told Athos had sunk in. His face paled and his eyes grew hard as he glared into mine. I swallowed; maybe I shouldn't have told him.

"But I'm not going to, I would never hurt you. I-" I began back tracking, fumbling over my words until Athos raised a hand.

"My dead wife who I sent to death has assigned you to killing me?" Athos began to chuckle, not quite the reaction I was expecting. I frowned, suddenly getting the impression he was laughing at me.

"She's alive Athos. I don't know how, but she's here in France. She wanted me to kill you. She wants you dead." I said through gritted teeth. I watched as Athos' face dropped as he knew I was being serious. Finally it went through.

"You liar." He hissed and I stared at him. "I thought I could trust you. I saw you as a sister, but no, you've just been trying to get into our lives so you can do a deed you were assigned to do." Athos began to get up from the table but I pulled his hand, pulling him back down. His head snapped to mine, anger rising throughout him.

"At first, yeah, I was going to kill you and trust me, I had many chances to do so but I didn't. You think that I wanted to have a musketeer's blood on my hands? Milady knew who burned my village to the ground and I wanted to know who it was, so in return for the information he assigned me to kill you. I thought it would be easy, but then I got to know you. I never intended to hurt you Athos, I'd never hurt a good friend and a brother." I explained, my eyes locked on his.

"You sold me out for a dead man?!" He exclaimed and I noticed Aramis look around from where he was talking.

"You're not listening to me." I hissed. "You're alive and because I won't go through with what she wants… let's just say the incident at the palace a few weeks ago was no accident. I was supposed to die there and then because I am a liability to your wife."

Athos listened intently, frowning after I had explained everything.

"So what has John got to do with all of this?" Athos asked calmly.

"Milady hired John to get rid of me so he could complete the deal for her. He just didn't know it was me he had to kill." I mumbled.

"She was in my room at the palace Athos. She knows where I am, and she probably knows I've told you everything by now, just please be careful." I said to him softly, suddenly feeling panicked that she was lurking in the shadows.

"Me? You're the one who needs to be careful. You're still injured Roxie and if she tries to make a move on you, then there's little that you could do." Athos said, all the anger evaporating out of his eyes. "I'll tell the others on what's going on and we'll be with you all the time." I shook my head at him.

"No, I need to tell Porthos on my own." I said to him. "And anyway, the best thing for me to do is leave." I said to him, shocked by my decision.

Athos' eyebrows hit the sky after I said that and he shook his own head in return.

"I think that would be the worst thing ever. For you and for Porthos. He wouldn't know if you were safe, and you would worry he was alive, in the end you would just drive yourself crazy. No, you'll stay here under the protection of the King's men." Athos said and I could tell there was no question for argument.

"What about yourself?" I asked watching him as he got up from the bench.

"I'm sure we'll figure something out." He said. I watched I'm for a moment and even though the anger had vanished from his eyes, it left hurt and disappointment. I dropped my gaze and focused it on the food bowl in front of me. I suddenly didn't feel very hungry.

"I'll talk to Aramis and D'Artangan." Athos said softly. "But you need to tell Porthos. Soon."

I nodded without even looking at him. I felt so ashamed I was sick to my stomach, and I couldn't bear to see the disappointment in his eyes. I heard Athos's footsteps walk away from the table towards the three men training. I looked at Athos who was speaking to the two men quietly whilst Porthos was told to go and check on their horses. My stomach twisted as guilt ate away at me. I stood up from the table, my legs listening to my subconscious, and I made my way out of the garrison, suddenly breaking into a fast run.

I didn't know where I was going, but I soon found myself outside Nicole's inn. I hadn't been there in ages, but I knew it was what I classed as home. I went inside, the warm air hitting my cold cheeks, greeted by the familiar smell of the soup of the day. I looked around and noticed my typical spot taken by a small family. I looked around to see if I could find Nicole but a shake of her father's head meant that she wasn't around. I nodded and wandered upstairs to find my door slightly open. I felt my blood run cold as I crept towards my room, pushing it open wide. Nothing had been touched in my room which was strange seeing as I had an expensive dress in the wardrobe, a ring and a small pearl necklace. My room wasn't that big, it was a little box room so there weren't many places to hide. I checked down the side of the wardrobe but found nothing.

'Strange.' I thought and checked to make sure everything was in the wardrobe.

"You still kept your wedding ring." A soft voice said from behind me. I spun around and saw John closing the bedroom door.

"What do you want." I whispered shutting the wardrobe and facing him. John took a step towards me but I took a step backwards making him stop.

"Roxanne don't be like this." John pleaded. I glared at him.

"I don't know who you are anymore John. You might want to try to kill me again." I spat. He sighed and put his hands on his hips. He was different to what he looked like when I knew him when we were younger. His hair was a mousy blonde which had darkened with age, his eyes which were once bright young things, were ones held with regret and tiredness. Even though he looked older than his age, his body still remain the toned and young thing he once was.

"You need to know that I had no idea it was you. She tricked me." John said running his hands though his hair.

"So what are you doing here? To finish off her orders?" I hissed, my hand resting on my pistol.

"I've come here to warn you." John said taking a step towards me. My instincts kicked in and before John could say the next word my pistol was aiming at him. John looked at the gun and then at me, his hands held up in surrender.

"Now Roxanne, let's not do anything stupid." John said backing up slightly.

"Say what you need to say and get out before I change my mind." I said, my eyes narrowing on him.

"She's coming for you Rox. She said that she's going to make sure that the person you love is going to put you to death. She said you're going to die with a broken heart." John said, the words spilling out of his mouth so fast I could barely hear them. I waited a moment before speaking.

"Why are you bound to her. What has she got on you." I asked, cocking the pistol which made John's eyes snap to mine.

"That's something you will hopefully never find out." He muttered to me. I felt my heart thud against my chest and I knew I couldn't stand his presence any longer.

"Get out." I stated, my pistol trained on him.

"But I can help you Rox, I can help you get out of this mess." He said softly. I shot the pistol at the door frame making him jump.

"I don't want your help." I said through gritted teeth. "Now get out."

John waited a moment before turning and opening the door.

"You need to be careful Roxanne. She's stronger than you think. Evil runs through her veins and she will stop at nothing to get what she wants." John said to me before he walked out the door and down the steps to the inn. I rushed over to the door, shutting it and locking it with the key. I felt panic over take my body, pushing me into the corner of the room where I sunk down to the floor, pulling my knees up to my chin. I knew my every move was hopeless. I was playing a game I was going to lose.
