Laxus POV
How could I have done that to her? I rubbed my face roughly, misery making more irritable than usual. I hated myself for what I did to her, I never should have brought her into my home. Those words kept echoing over and over in my head, winding me tighter and tighter until the need to lash out nearly overtook me.
"Laxus?" Mira waved a hand in my face, startling me out of my thoughts, and luckily stopping me from acting on my urges. I growled and sat up, glaring over at her.
That was when I realized that the whole place was nearly empty, and most of the chairs were on top of the tables, as if they were getting ready to close down. That and my stomach let out a fierce grumble.
"What the fuck time is it?" I could have sworn I just walked in at noon.
"Nearly two am.." she trailed off and sat next to me, "Is everything alright? You haven't moved from this spot in quite a number of hours."
I hesitated, but no one else was around, and if anyone could keep a secret it would be Mirajane. "I think I fucked up." I dragged a hand over my face, leaning back in the booth and hissing in pain, so I stood up instead and leaned against the wall. "I thought my place would be safer, it was closer." I needed to hit something, anything, I could feel my power simmering just under my skin. "But she isn't safe from me. Maybe it is best she goes to Sabertooth. They have way less problems now than we do.
She stared at me silently for a few moments before standing back up herself, "You are an idiot." she shook her head with that small smile of hers, "It was her choice to come here in the first place, if you really do push her away, she may never come back. She's family now Laxus, I'm surprised you could say such a thing." she walked to behind the counter and brought over some snacks, "She was here earlier you know, looked right at you, but you didn't even react."
I snarled at her and took a step in her direction before stopping myself; if we really got into it, we would level the whole area, and I wasn't sure I wanted to know which of us was stronger.
"Tch," I snarled, but walked a different direction, "I don't need this shit from you. I'm picking up a mission early tomorrow, have one ready for me." I didn't bother to wait for her reply, I was hungry, and no doubt she wanted to go home.
I needed to work off this energy before I did something I would regret. Again.
Rinku POV
Thankfully, Mira had a job all set up for Levi, her team, and I. A simple enough job; we just had to escort a noble through some rough terrain where monstered tended to attack caravans, and then guide him back home the next morning.
And it was easy, with my sense of hearing and smell, I knew when we were going to be attacked before they did. Take downs were easy, and we refrained from any kill shots. This was still their home after all.
The noble was a bit of a prick, which all of us agreed on. But the party was fun, a perk of the job, and I got to learn a dance or two. Thankfully I was supplied a dress, because I did not bring one of my own. I really hadn't planned on dressing up, I would rather have slept in a room.
"Are you doing ok?" Levi came up and handed me a drink, "This must be a lot more people than you are used to."
"Quite a bit of noise too, but I'm learning to sift through it." The drink tasted divine, and thankfully had no alcohol. "But its not as crowded as the city was, so I don't feel trapped. It's really quite nice."
Levi all but glowed as she beamed up at me, "I'm glad, Mira had figured this would be a good job, a bit of traveling, party, meet new people."
"I appreciate it, its been quite fun." But before I could continue our conversation, a familiar blond head poked out from the other side of the ball. And our eyes linked, both in surprise. But then a slow smile formed across his face. "I need to go." I dropped my drink on the table and all but bolted to where I had been shown the bathroom.
I couldn't help my reaction, self preservation and all that, but the damn skirts kept me from going too fast, and too far. And he caught up before I could make my escape.
"Rinku." he touched me gently, but it didn't matter. The second he came in close I put my hands to defend myself. "Woah woah." he lifted his own hands, "I'm sorry. Your ok, I'm not going to attack you."
"I don't like you." I said flatly and moved away from him, "I'm honor bound to visit you, but I don't want to see you."
The look on his face was a surprise to me; pain, shock, and sorrow. "Oh." he put a hand to his chest and bowed, "I didn't realize... I guess I shouldn't be..." he shook his head, "We are not the Sabertooth you saw before. I'm the Guild Master, and we value love and loyalty just like Fairy Tail. I just wanted you to have another option, me and Rogue are Dragon Slayers too. We could be your family just as much as they can."
I didn't want to believe in his words, but he said them with such sincerity, it was hard not to soften my stance. Levi saw the two of us and made a move to interrupt, but at the last second I shook my head and looked at Sting.
"I am sorry for causing so much trouble at your guild hall." I stood up straight, making sure to keep enough distance between us that I could run or fight.
In response, Sting smiled brightly, and I had the urge to shield my eyes from it. He looked so much like he did in the games, that wicked grin, the messy hair. And yet, so little like he had, he looked kinder, his features had softened, and that wicked grin had lost its edge.
Maybe he was different, people can change. I mean, Laxus almost took out his whole guild, to make it the strongest. Sting was doing to same thing, maybe he came around like Laxus did. It wasn't fair of me to refuse to give him a chance.
"You have nothing to be sorry for; in truth, I really didn't want you to pay back the damages, I just wanted an excuse to get you over into the guild hall. You have so many other options, and you should make an informed decision." He reached forward and took my hand, and this time I let him, leading me back to the dance floor. "I just wish to get to know you better. To become friends, and let you get to know me and my guild."
I tried not to react as he pulled me into a dance, but I couldn't help the apprehension on my face. He simply smiled back, more patient than any of the men at Fairy Tail; a few of the women too. "I... will try." I nodded and followed his steps, like Laxus had taught me.
The thought of him brought pain to my chest, but before I could think about it, Sting spoke and distracted me from it. "And that's all I can really ask from you. Just a chance. If your too uncomfortable by it, we can send you back at any time." he smiled and brought my knuckles to his lips, "But I do hope you will end up calling it home."
"W-what?" I snatched my hand away from him and ended up bumping into a waiter, and my superior reflexes failed me. The sound of shattering glass echoed across the hall, whatever drinks they were holding now soaked me.
"Rinku!" Levy came running over and took my hand. Good think because I closed my eyes, wanting to keep whatever liquid out of my eyes.
"Is she ok?" Sting sounded worried, and the urge to step back again overwhelmed me. Good thing Levy kept me from moving again. "I don't know what happened."
"I'm taking her to the ladies room. Jet! Droy! Wait for us out here please, don't let our noble leave without us."
"Yes Ma'am!" they said in unison.
Levy lead me out carefully, murmuring directions as we went, reminding me to keep my eyes closed.
"I can either get some cloth wet and try to clean your face, or we can go in the courtyard and really clean you off."
"Courtyard please."
Neither of us made it back to the party, it took so long to get everything out of my hair, the party was already over. I changed quickly, back into my fighting clothes, and went to the carriage to wait for the rest of them.
"Rinku!" Sting came running out, his brows pinched together. I'd say it was fear, but I couldn't smell it; weird. "Rinku!" he grinned when he reached us, but his features were still pinched. "I'm so very sorry about what happened, please, let me take you to lunch tomorrow, to make it up to you."
I hesitated, unsure about what to say, but Levi spoke before I had a chance to.
"I don't know if that is a good idea, she's not well versed in social intricacies." Levi folded her arms over her chest, "I dont think it's a good idea for her to be alone with you."
"I'm not going to trick her into anything, I wouldn't do anything to hurt her, or the reputation of my guild." He seemed sincere, but I really had no basis to judge off if he was lying or not.
Anxiety gripped me and I pressed my back against the carriage, I had no idea what I was doing. Levi was right, I don't know how to tell if someone is lying or not. Was Laxus lying the other day? Did Mira or the others lie to me?
Was I really safe at Fairy Tail? Would it be any worse than Sabertooth?
They were speaking but I couldn't hear them, but I watched as our charge walked out of the hall with Jet and Droy. "He's here. We need to be ready to go." My voice sounded dead, I needed a fight to burn through this anxiety.
Sting looked over at me, sadness creasing the edges of his eyes, "I'll come visit tomorrow, if you don't wish to see me, you won't have to." He bowed before simply walking off, meeting up with his other guild members.
"He has changed, but they spent so long under the rule of that monster. We don't know what that did to him." Levi spoke softly. "We'll keep you safe."
I had no way to know if that was true or not. How could I? The only true social activity I had before this was just purchasing items from stores where the prices were clearly marked. I was way in over my head.
Levi and her companions entered the carriage, and I jumped up on the horse that had been provided for me. Apparently anything with wheels made me sick, but if I was riding a live creature, I was fine.
And lucky for me, there were plenty of monsters to chase away on our way back to the Noble's home. We were offered refreshments, and then were sent on our way with our reward, evenly passed out between us.
"I'll see you all later." I smiled to them, letting them make their own way home, while I made my way into the trees, finding a tall one, and climbing up high, closed in by the foliage.
Maybe this is where I belong? Out in the wild, not in a city. I had lived long enough on my own, why should I change now?
Hope you enjoyed this chapter :) Let me know what you think! As always review, follow, and favorite :*
