When Tsunade entered the hospital room, she was not at all surprised to see her favorite Hyuuga wrapped tightly in the Uchiha's arms. She was not happy, but not surprised.
She stared at them with her honey eyes for a long time, though, evaluating their relationship. Hinata cared about Sasuke, she supposed, but in the way one would care for a team mate. The ravenette's back was pressed to Sasuke's stomach, as if she didn't dare face him- as if he was less then Naruto. Tsunade had indeed seen her fall asleep in Naruto's arms; she pressed her nose into the blonde's neck. Sasuke, however, was tightly holding Hinata, as if he feared she would escape him or fall. This, to Tsunade, made logical sense. The man was probably a test tube of psychological issues and disorders. He had seen his mother's dead corpse, and his unnatural attachment to Hinata probably stemmed from her, Mikoto.
Tsunade remembered Mikoto fondly. Sasuke was a near spitting image of the kind-hearted woman. His eyes were beautiful, even if they were stolen from his dead brother. His eyes, she thought, were kind like Mikoto's. He was a nice person when he chose to be. He was so troubled, though. Tsunade sympathized with him and wished she could operate on his mind and make him forget all the pain and anxiety he suffered from childhood. But really, she didn't want to make him forget anything- the love his parents showed him, the strength he gained in Itachi's absence, his realization about his brother. Sasuke was a broken soul, a shattered mind, but Tsunade realized, in Naruto and Hinata's presence, he was healing.
Tsunade smiled softly, knowingly. Hinata suddenly turned over, pressing her nose against the taller man's collar bone. Sasuke's face, which was tense, straightened and became peaceful.
Tsunade decided she could put the mission on hold for a few hours to let the man sleep. He probably didn't get a lot of it anyway.

Mikoto lifted the warm tea up to her lips. "This is going…smoothly."
Kushina frowned. "I'm going to kill Naruto! Dishonoring his wife and being defeated by some low life merchant? I hope he finds us soon." She nodded and crossed her arms.
A third, quiet woman sat beside Mikoto with a frown. "I'm sure Hinata forgives him. She isn't one to hold grudges."
Itachi, the only male in the small tea house, smiled. "She is rather lovely, isn't she? She nearly attacked me when I touched Sasuke."
Kushina continued to grumble, saying something about sibling rivalry.
Mikoto laughed softly. "I don't think dating the same woman is sibling rivalry, Kushina, but thank you for saying our sons are brotherly."
"I rather liked that Naruto boy," Hinata's mother softly admitted. "I do wish he had stayed faithful… I know it was an ongoing relationship between Sakura and himself."
Kushina sighed, giving up her tough act. "If I was around, he would know how to treat a lady."
"But," Itachi defended, "he did become a great warrior and fought his demons bravely. I wish Sasuke had a little more of Naruto's spirit."
Mikoto nodded, along with Kushina and Hitomi. Hitomi added again, gently pulling her fingers through her hair, "Sasuke seems like a nice man. He was a little…mean at first, but he seems to protect her. I like that. He reminds me of Hiashi."
All the women and Itachi stared at her. Kushina, being the most outgoing, quickly said, "Sasuke reminds you of Hiashi?"
Hitomi's face reddened. "He has a harsh exterior, but he's truly kind."
Mikoto nodded, finishing her tea. "Itachi, tell us again how she held Sasuke," she demanded gently, smiling widely.
Itachi nodded, and reciprocated the grin. "Hinata held him tightly, and touched his hair, like, a lot. And we have similar hair, so I can see why." The women giggled at his joke, but he continued. "It was odd- she kissed his face, as if he was precious to her. I hadn't seen a woman so genuinely distraught over him. That Karin character and Sakura didn't even react so strongly to him."
Mikoto sighed. "Young love is a wonderful thing. I hope Sasuke really cherishes her- she's wonderful and might not stick around forever." Her eyes fell down to the tabletop sadly, muddled with thought.
Kushina put her hand on top of Mikoto's.
"I think," Hitomi began gently, "Hinata has serious feelings for your son. She spends a lot of time with him- more than the mission entails."
Itachi nodded. "Mom, I think Sasuke is safe with her."
Hitomi licker her lips, clearly uncomfortable with speaking excessively. "My nephew is ruthless in making sure Hinata is taken care of, don't you think?"
Kushina nodded. "I think he was angry with Naruto once he began dating Hinata."
"Yes," Mikoto agreed, adding, "Neji keeps pushing Sasuke into Hinata's arms. I think it's odd and I wonder what's influencing him to do that."
"Well, it's no fun raising a baby without a husband," Kushina chimed in. "Even though Naruto wasn't born yet, Minato was very busy with being a Hokage and never helped out. I felt alone."
"Yes, but how would Neji know Hinata would experience the same loneliness?" Mikoto asked.
"Neji is very smart," Hitomi said. "He and Hinata rival each other for the highest IQ level in the clan. Also, he was raised to be Hinata's protector and older brother. He has some insight to her that no one else does."
Mikoto and Itachi nodded.
"Well," Kushina said sweetly, "Aren't they sleeping together- Sasuke and Hinata?"
Mikoto and Hitomi both turned red and their eyes widened. "No," Mikoto cried. "I know they sleep near each other on occasion but not…together." She shivered at the thought.
Itachi and Kushina shared a look of mischief on their faces. "You are too naïve," Kushina said. "Your boys have-"
Mikoto put her hands up. "No, they do not."
Itachi snickered and tried to cover his smirk with his pale hand.
The two women held their horrified faces while Itachi and Kushina laughed. Hitomi and Mikoto joined the laughter and eventually air in the room became light.
Kushina was the first to sober, worry written on her face. "I realize the man who attacked Naruto was weaker, but these Miku Hunt guys…"
Mikoto nodded. "They seem very strong. I've only got glimpses of them, but they are highly trained- ANBU level, I'd say."
"I remember when I was younger they attacked some family members," Hitomi muttered. "It was gruesome. They poisoned my distant cousins and when we found their bodies, we had to dig out their eyes before the Hunt came back and stole them."
"You know, Mikoto," Kushina said wearily, looking at her dark-haired friend, "Tsunade is going to send Sasuke on that mission."
"I do," Mikoto whispered. "I believe in him."
"I will do whatever I can to protect him," Itachi said strongly.
Kushina clasped her hand onto his shoulder, smiling at him. "You are a kind brother, Itachi."
Itachi's eyes grew muddled, and his smile became a sad upturn of his lips.

"Glad you could make it, Uchiha." Tsunade leaned back in her chair, plastering on her usual fake scowl.
Kiba and Nara were sitting in chairs when I entered the room. I plopped down unceremoniously between the two, looking at Tsunade unapologetically. "I know what this is about," I said. "Can we just begin?"
The old woman rolled her eyes. "I'm glad you know, Uchiha, but Shikamaru and Kiba aren't as filled in." She cleared her throat and jumped into an explanation.
I wasn't listening. My mind wandered to the odd dreams I had about my mother, and then to this morning. Focusing on a lone raven outside of her window, I recalled the scent of Hinata's hair. It was lilac, as if she had fresh flowers stuck behind her ears. And her breath gently dusted my collar bone, in the calmest matter that drove me insane. Maybe I didn't love her- maybe I simply lusted so strongly for her that I confused the two. It didn't matter though, because I held her tightly, like a lover might do. I held her against me and it gave me this sick, masochistic feeling of manliness that I wanted to feel again. I wanted to feel her again.
"They are highly trained- better then ANBU."
I should have flinched at her words, but a feeling of serenity drifted through my chest. When her lavender eyes had opened and she smiled at me, I felt a feeling in my chest that I could never replicate without her. Hinata had given me a nightmareless night and the best morning I had ever experienced- I did not want to rise without her. It's possible I love her, and I love her so strongly the lust follows.
"I am sending you three as front men and a group of highly skilled ANBU in case."
"Should we wear our ANBU masks anyway?" Nara asked.
I looked back at the woman's face. She nodded. "Uchiha, I realize you are not an ANBU and you don't have one. But, you are an Uchiha and I don't want them to go after your eyes. It pains me to say this, but I may have to create a special mask for you."
A sudden image of Hinata's mouse mask came to my mind. "How about I use Hinata's mask?"
Tsunade leaned back, a frown set deep on her face.
"If they know that she is the one to normally wear the mask, they will attack me- I know I can handle them."
The old woman pursed her lips but said, "Fine. It makes sense, so fine."
"Hokage-sama," Nara said, "Sasuke is the last survivor of a powerful clan- why are you sending him?"
Tsunade nodded, "I understand the confusion. Kiba is going because of his fine tracking skills, Shikamaru, you are going because you are very tactical and can see if there is any sort of set-up or hoax. Uchiha is going because he is one of the strongest men I've got."
I felt pride swell up in my chest. "When do we leave?"
"ASAP- go to the Land Hidden in Water and consult with the Mizukage. If there is no hope there, head east to the MistVillage; it's a dangerous place, so watch your back."
"How long do you suppose it'll take, because Hina's birthday is coming up?"
I resisted the urge to glare at Kiba.
Tsunade smiled. "Only a few weeks, I'm sure you'll make it in time for her birthday."
Nara stood, scratching his scruffy chin and yawning. He looked like his old team leader- Asuma. "I guess we should head out." Tsunade nodded at his words. "I say we meet at the village gates in an hour."
"Agreed," Kiba said, nodding.
"Fine."
Tsunade waved a goodbye to us and the three of us departed, heading to our respective locations.
I could already feel ANBU eyes on me.
When I knocked on the hut's door, I wasn't surprised to see Hinata opening it with a small smile. Her cheeks were pink and she said, "Hi, Sasuke."
I nodded, walking past her. She shut the door behind me. "I have to go after the Hunt with your team mate and Shikamaru Nara."
Hinata caught up to me, walking down to my bedroom with me. "Why is she sending you?"
I nearly smiled. "Because I'm the best she's got, of course."
Hinata was quietly standing in the door frame, her lavender eyes studying me as I reached for a small bag under my bed. "Should I make you something?"
"No," I chuckled. She was really selfless.
"When…when do you have to go?"
I set down my shirt and looked up at her. Her eyebrows were knit together, and her fingers were pressed together. "Why are you so worried?"
Hinata licked her lips and looked away. "I know they are strong- my father told me stories about them."
"I'm an Uchiha, I can fight one if one comes my way."
She bit her lip, looking unsatisfied. "That old man, who looked like a civilian and had no chakra signature, almost killed you. He probably wasn't the best they had anyway."
Hinata's eyes met mine and I frowned. She was scared for me. "I'm going to make it back. It's just a small mission."
Suddenly she turned away, heading into the hallway.
I followed, trying to catch up to her. She was closing the door to her bedroom when I pushed it back open. "Hinata, what's the matter?"
The short woman plopped down on her bed, clutching Naruto's jacket to her chest. "They killed him- they can hurt you too."
I felt like my heart had turned into a heavy stone and fell into my stomach. Hinata smelled the jacket, closing her eyes tightly. A small, animalistic part of me wished I had killed Naruto when I had the chance, but the dominate and logical part of me knew she was just reliving the pain she felt when she watched him die. "I am stronger now than he was then."
She looked up at me, her small, plump lips puckered in sadness. "I can't lose both of my precious people."
I stared at her for a while, utterly depressed, but feeling higher than ever. I ran my fingers through my hair, sighing. "Hinata-"
"Sasuke, I thought about a name for my baby."
I paced forward, kneeling before her.
"Sasuhi- I know it sounds silly, but you've been really kind to me. And you've made me…happy, happy that I got to meet you."
I grabbed her chin and brought her face down so I could look at her. "I am not going to die on this mission. I promise."
She burst into tears and threw herself into my arms, pushing us both to the ground. I smiled at her actions and began petting her hair, in a frail attempt to soothe her. "I'm sorry, Sasuke."
I shook my head. It felt nice to be wanted. Not like Sakura believed was want but in the literal sense- the way Hinata felt about me. She quickly detached herself from me, leaving me cold and missing her warm arms. "Hinata, I know," I said, trying to reason with her, "that this is about Naruto. I'm not like him though, and I sincerely doubt this'll take as long as she said or that we'll even be attacked."
I stood up, dusting off my pants. Hinata had wiped away her tears and was waiting at the door for me. I just followed, feeling nearly confused by her actions.
I finished up my bag and found one more item in my closet- the purple shirt I had worn when I killed Orochimaru. It was oversize and faded, but it was somehow important to me. "Hinata," I said, turning. She was seated on my bed. "Hold this for me, while I'm gone."
Hinata reached for the shirt and smiled. "Sasuke," she began.
"I think it'll keep you warmer than that jacket. You could probably wrap around your body twice."
Her smiled only grew. "Th-thank you, Sasuke." She swung her legs off the bed and folded my shirt in half, laying it on the bed.
Without thinking, I pulled her into my arms tightly. The mission was an excuse for me to touch her. Her nose pressed to my neck and she giggled softly, wrapping her arms around my waist. I combed my fingers through her black hair, stirring the lilac scent I had grown to love.
"Why are you doing this, Sasuke?"
I almost laughed. "It doesn't matter."
We stood like that, completely pressed together, until I said I had to grab something and leave. She pulled away slightly, moving her arms to my neck. "Come back in one piece."
"I'll try," I said.
"There is no try," she demanding, laying her head on my shoulder. "There is only do."
I smiled. "Are you going to miss me, princess?"
She laughed and pushed me away, moving to sit back on the bed. "I would never miss you."
I rolled my eyes and grinned, tackling her to the bed and burying my face in her neck. "You'll miss me," I pressed, "You'll think about me every morning and every night."
Hinata laughed, trying to push my shoulders away. "You'll miss me then. Who else will be there to cook for you?"
I smiled, because she was correct. Gently, I kissed her neck, not stopping to gauge her reaction. Her pulsed hammered in her veins, and I kissed the soft spot beneath her jaw.
"Sasuke, you have a mission." Her voice was so quiet, a simply whisper.
I did not speak. I liked the way her soft skin felt on my lips. She didn't stop me. My lips trailed her jaw slowly, taking a soft bite at her earlobe. "I will miss you," I breathed.
"I will miss you," Hinata muttered.
I sat up, feeling lethargic. I didn't want to move from her. Her face was bright red, like a ripened tomato.
She sat up beneath me, pressing her chest to my own. My breath caught in my throat as she closed her eyes and leaned in, pressing her lips to my cheek. "Goodbye, Sasuke."
"I love you," I said, feeling sad. "I love you."
Her face fell, and she reached up, cupping my face. "Save it for somebody who deserves you."
Her words enraged me. I hated when she danced around my feelings. She needed to fucking say how she felt. I hated it when she did this. I untangled myself from her and escaped the room, because it was too damn hot and I needed to leave. It had been longer then an hour- they would look for me.
I grabbed the mouse mask from her room without asking. It's not like she wasn't following behind me with questioning eyes that I didn't want to face.
With my bag on my back and the mask firmly placed on my face, I ran to the gates, faster then I thought my legs could carry me. My heart was firmly lodged in my gut and my stomach burned, like I had been punched. I hated myself for loving her so much.
But she knew and she teased me! She fucking knew I wanted to kiss her and hold her and make her mine, and she kept playing with me!
I saw Nara and Kiba standing there, their masks placed on their faces. I think it was agreed to wear it throughout most of the mission, in case anybody does know who we are (or who I am, mostly).
"It'll take a little less than a week to arrive," Nara said. His mask resembled a weird owl and cat hybrid. But I thought most of the ANBU masks resembled cats, anyway. "Uchiha, just in case, how well do you see blind-folded?"
"You mean not at all?" I sneered under the mask. "I am very good at navigating blindly." Orochimaru always tied a black cloth over my face, asking me to find the way to the nearest restaurant or home. At the time I thought it was useless, but my other senses have been greatly enhanced.
"Good- before we leave the village, tie this around your eyes."
Nara held up a long piece of red ribbon and I took it. I didn't question his motive; I knew it was a precaution, in case my mask was somehow torn off. I slipped it under the mask and tied it tightly around my head, taking a moment to adjust to the darkness.
"I've got one too, Uchiha," Kiba said. "We look different, but if it comes down to it, I can transform into you."
I nodded. "Let's go."
We ran into the forest, running all night and until the next day. I was highly impressed with them and asked if I could find fish for them as congratulations. Nara asked me to take Kiba with while he set up camp in the late afternoon. I had agreed, because even if I hated him, I was exhausted (and ashamed to admit it).
"Do you know where the nearest pond is? I have trouble seeing with this thing."
I almost nodded but smirked instead. "I can smell the water." Obviously he had trouble seeing, idiot.
"How do you smell water?"
I heard Kiba following behind me, unceremoniously breaking twigs and loudly cussing at his mutt, who followed at ours heals. The thing was huge but quieter then Kiba. "It doesn't smell like air," I sighed. "Aren't you in a dog clan?"
"Yeah, but who the hell sniffs water?"
I felt the ground squish under my boots and leaned down, dipping my hand in a cool lake. "We are here."
Kiba awkwardly ran into me, his hips bumping to mine. "Sorry, man."
I rolled my eyes. "Just try to grab a fish."
He and I calmly stood in the water, waiting until the waves around our legs nearly stilled. I felt a small wave caress my bare calf and I suddenly slammed my hand into the water, picking up a large fish.
Kiba called that he got one, and I told him that I had too. We decided two big fish were good enough for the three of us, and headed back to camp, carrying the dead fish by their mouths.
"I hate fish," Kiba suddenly said.
"It's not my favorite," I admitted.
"It smells weird and besides, who even likes swimming? Like, what creature dedicates its life to swimming?"
I smiled.
"Hina hates fish too. Once my mom made it for her, and she ate it trying to be polite, but then she threw up. I guess she's allergic or something."
I frowned. "She makes fish all the time."
"Does she ever actually eat it?"
I thought back to the last dinner we had together involving fish. She pushed it around until she decided to make herself a cup of ramen. "Hn, I guess not."
"Nobody likes fish," Kiba grumbled softly.
He was almost as childish as Naruto was.
When we arrived, Nara had a fire built and said, "I'm looking forward to this. I'm starved."
I nodded, handing him the dead corpse. He happily took it and began preparing it. "You can be such a woman," Kiba laughed.
"I like cooking, so?"
"You'll turn into Hinata."
I was starting to get annoyed with his talk about Hinata. Did he have a story for everything involving her?
"Hinata doesn't always cook," Nara chided.
"I bet she would cook more if I was the one to live with her," Kiba said cockily.
"She does cook for me every night," I said with a smirk.
The dog barked when Kiba made a grunting noise, chocking on the water from his canteen. "Well, it's because she's trying to make your imprisonment a little less shitty, not because she actually, like, likes you."
I resisted the urge to slam my fist in his face. "You don't know her feelings," I snapped.
Nara began roasting the fish. "Guys, shut up and sit down. Hinata likes us
all equally. She always strives to make us feel comfortable."
Kiba scoffed, and I heard him plop down a log angrily. "Yeah, that's why she kissed my cheek before my last mission. I've got a better chance with her than either of you."
The pain in my stomach increased and I rolled my eyes, sitting near Nara. I didn't want to smell that mutt.
"Kiba, she kissed me when I proposed to Temari and she kissed Neji when he walked her down the aisle."
I sulked on my log- she hadn't really kissed me- just sort of pecked my cheek.
"I bet she'll kiss me though, for real," Kiba insisted. "She likes me the most out of anybody and with Naruto… Hinata definitely likes me the most, alright?"
"Shut up," I said with a snarl. "She lives with me and likes me the most."
"Is this a popularity contest?" Nara snapped. "The fish is done."
He set a small plate down in my lap and then I felt a piece of food being slapped down on it. "Uchiha, she doesn't live with you, okay, so don't kid yourself. Why would she love you, anyway?" Kiba's tone was an annoying attempt at righteousness.
His mutt barked in agreement.
I clenched my jaw. "I never said she does, but if she were to choose, it wouldn't be you. You're childish and weaker than me and I know she likes strong men."
Kiba took a bite and angrily said with a full mouth, "That's where you're wrong- she hates big tough ninja because they act all cocky. In fact, when you came back, she told me you were going to ruin everything and try to conquer us like some brute."
His words stung. "She wouldn't say that."
"She did, so," he said, and I could almost hear his smile.
I did not act impulsively. I ate my fish even though my stomach was aching and I stood, claiming that I was going to take the first watch. Kiba acted arrogantly for the rest of the night, and Nara ignored him with me. They eventually went to bed, leaving me alone.
I meditated, ignoring all the anger and twisted feelings I felt in my body.
This was our routine for the next four days. We ran as far as we could until we grew tired and ate. The closer we got to the village, the wetter the ground became and the easier it was to find fish and edible plants.
Admittedly, Kiba's words bothered me. I knew Hinata was kind and she hugged and kissed people- but I felt stupid to think I was special because she kissed me. Hinata made me feel special whenever she spoke to me though, and it was childish to think she did any of that specifically for me.
I was an Uchiha, who did not deserve love or anybody's comfort. I craved blood and danger and I enjoyed killing people.
I was lying to myself. I prayed every night to a god that probably didn't hear me. I didn't want to go to hell or whatever there was for people like me. That's one of the reasons I loved Hinata; the woman made me feel worthy of a heaven. She was the paradise I wanted after life. Hinata's face was gentle and so were her hands when she touched me.
Deep inside of me, the murderous, dangerous part of me wanted to take her. Have sex with her even if she didn't want it, because she was gorgeous and she was stupid enough to forgive me. But the bigger part of me told me to stop being a sick bastard because she was the kind of woman who deserved to be cherished and kept safe, like fine china.
I smiled, remembering how careful my mother was with her fine china. Hinata's face was round and pale like my mother's porcelain plates. Her body was curved delicately like the silverware, and she was precious. I was afraid I would shatter her in an instant. I wanted to- I used to want to- shatter her peace of mind and confidence, but she never deserved it from me. Hinata never gave me a real reason to hate her, aside from petty jealousy reasons. She even caressed the tattoos on my legs, as if the reason they were there wasn't because I killed my team mates. She was odd enough to be mine.
Sakura looked at Hinata like Hinata was already mine and I nearly liked that. But Sakura also looked at her like she was scum, because Sakura was so jealous. I thought it was ridiculous- the pinkette was strong and intelligent, so why couldn't she take a hint? It was more then annoying. There was a time when I would have killed her and walked away without saying a thing.
Most men liked the idea of women fighting over them- I found it nonsensical. I was a killer, and for years it was rumored I didn't even like females. Before Hinata, I didn't try to impress a woman or act in any sort of way to attract one. In fact, I did a lot to repulse them so I could train.
I guess I understand why people spread rumors.
"Hey," Kiba called.
I glanced back at him, even though I was blindfolded.
"We are about to enter the village. Drop down and wait for Shikamaru to catch up."
I jumped over two branches, shaking myself from my thoughts. Landing on the ground gently, I waited.
Nara approached quickly, taking down his hair. He leaned close to my ear and whispered, "In case of the Hunt tailing us, we stopped two miles from the village. Pull up your hair."
I nodded, taking the small band from him and tying up my hair like Nara had.
"Don't speak from here, in case we really fooled them into thinking you are Hinata."
I nodded an affirmative.
"If you sense danger, don't flare your chakra." His body was close to mine, as if he were trying to show that we were somehow an intimate ANBU couple. He was a smart guy. "Lift two fingers if you think we are going to be attacked."
I nodded again, just once, a slight tip of my chin.
"Walk straight unless I say otherwise."
We started walking again, this time silently. I was careful to keep my chakra under control- Hinata's was never present unless she was worried about something.
In an hour, we were at the gates. Nara showed the guards the sealed paper Tsunade had given us, as protocol demands.
And then we had entered Kirigakure, mist sticking to our skin uncomfortably. "Let's get to the tower," Kiba groaned. "It's too stuffy here."
I agreed with him for once.
