Chapter EX I– Dawn's adoption
This place is so boring; nobody here will play duel monsters with me… I guess they all got sick of losing all the time.
These words run through Dawn's head as she looks wistfully out the window with a sigh.
Dawn lives in an orphanage; the orphanage supplies every child who comes through its doors a duel monsters deck. Children are then free to trade cards from their decks to other children, and the staff of the orphanage. Allegedly the orphanage is owned by Industrial Illusion's, the company responsible for creating duel monsters, and it was Maximillion Pegasus himself who decreed that all children here would have access to his creation.
Upon arriving, Dawn was given a rudimentary Zombie deck. Her favourite card in the deck was Vampire Grace. Over several years after her arrival she had taken the time and put in the effort to trade around and eventually turn her Zombie deck into a pure Vampire deck.
One of the other things that Maximillion assured was that the children of his orphanage were given due access to cartoons and anime for them to enjoy. Dawn enjoyed one anime in particular; an anime called Highschool DxD. The cover of the anime stated that it was for people aged fifteen and over, but both Pegasus and the Matron of the orphanage said "Oh, pish posh!" to such restrictions, as long as the anime wasn't excessively gory it was fine for the children to watch, as most were either educated beyond their age, or so young that any adult humour or situations went so far over their heads they may as well have been helicopters.
Dawn fell into the former category; she was on an education level on par with first year university students, now studying theoretical physics and computer engineering in her spare time. She also liked to keep up to date on current events such as the student disappearances that recently occurred at Duel Academy.
Now, after the disappearances had stopped, there are rumours that students are being hospitalised in an unconscious state. These rumours, while in her mind unfounded, still piqued her curiosity.
If only I had some way of attending duel academy… then I'd be able to investigate first hand.
Still looking out of her window, she stares longingly at the front gates of the orphanage and utters a small prayer.
"Oh gods, please send somebody to take me away from this place. Make them somebody famous for playing duel monsters. Someone like Seto Kaiba, Yugi Mutou or Joey Wheeler…"
"Hah!" A laugh sounds from the doorway behind her. A boy stands leant on her doorway.
"As if anybody that famous would want to adopt a weirdo like you! Look at you, you wear glasses and you have green hair! Could you get any weirder?"
Dawn shrugs.
"At least I don't have trouble playing a children's card game…"
"Oh yeah? Maybe you'd like to settle this with fists instead of cards!"
The boy cracks his knuckles threateningly. Dawn rolls her eyes at him.
"Put your fists away Dalton, unless you want to get locked in solitary for another week…"
As Dawn says this, a nun passes Dalton in the hall. The boy grumbles and walks away as Dawn goes back to looking out the window.
Dawn has been watching the gate longingly all day, and finally her vigilance pays off. She can barely believe what she's seeing as a man walks through the gate. The man is wearing a long purple coat and has brown hair and blue eyes. The man… is Seto fuck mothering Kaiba!
Dawn rises from her place by her window and runs through the halls, not caring that she's wearing only socks on her feet.
Getting to the front door to the orphanage, she opens it to see Seto Kaiba standing in front of it, a surprised look on his face.
"Hello, I'd like to talk to the matron of this establishment. I need to adopt a child…"
Dawn smiles smugly.
"Look no further Mr. Kaiba, you've found your new daughter! My name's Dawn, and I'm a duel monster's prodigy second only to you!"
Seto sighs.
"If you're second to me, then I could name four other people that are also better than you. And that's without having to think. Something that maybe you should do before you speak next time, now are you going to take me to the Matron, or do I have to find her myself?"
Dawn's face falls slightly at his words.
"B-but… of course, when I said I was second only to you… I only meant that obviously you're better than Yugi Mutou or Joey Wheeler…"
"You shouldn't say those names with such familiarity. Also, I've gained enough maturity as a parent to recognise that I am no longer the strongest duelist in the world. Yugi is a better duelist than I, as are his children… well, at least one of them… as are my daughter and my wife. As I said, I could name four other people who are better than you without having to think."
Dawn's face drops as she feels her chance of adoption slipping away.
"Fine, if you're such a bad duelist, then maybe I could beat you! I challenge you to a duel, and if I win you have to adopt me."
Seto chuckles.
"Ahh, this brings back memories… very well, I accept your challenge. But I don't intend to lose as my father did when I challenged him.."
Dawn smiles confidently.
"I'm sure he didn't intend to either."

"You can start, ladies first and all that nonsense."
Dawn smiles.
"Ok, I'll start with one card face down and a monster in defence mode."
Dawn places one card face down in her spell and trap zone, and one face down in her monster zone.
"A weak start for what I'm sure is a weak deck, after all not much can beat my deck for power. I summon Assault Wyvern in attack mode (1800atk) and attack your defence monster."
Kaiba places a level four dragon on his field and declares an attack on Dawn's defence monster.
"You've attacked my Pyramid Turtle, when it's destroyed it allows me to summon a zombie from my deck with 2000 or less defence points. I'll summon a second Pyramid Turtle (1200def)."
Dawn places her defence monster in the graveyard and searches her deck for a second copy.
"Well, because I sent a monster from your field to the grave, I can tribute my Wyvern to summon a level eight or lower dragon-type monster from my hand or deck; the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. It's a good thing I had Pegasus commission three more of these, otherwise Azura wouldn't have her own copies… Naturally my Dragon is going to attack your second turtle. Go ahead, summon a third, I'll just destroy it next turn."
Dawn smiles.
"I think not. I'll use my Pyramid Turtle's effect to special summon my ace; Vampire Grace (2000atk) She's a powerful zombie card that allows me to choose a card type once per turn and force you to send one card of the chosen type from your deck to the grave. My turn?"
Seto shakes his head, looking at her vampire contemplatively.
"No, I'm going to activate Tribute to the Doomed, discarding my Lord of D. to destroy your Vampire Grace. Now it's your turn."
Dawn glares petulantly as she places her Vampire Grace in the graveyard. Drawing her next card she starts her turn.
"I summon Vampire Lady (1550atk) and activate the trap card Vampire Takeover! This card lets me search my deck for a Vampire Kingdom field spell and place it on the field. Then if I do, I can special summon one Dark 'Vampire' monster from my graveyard; Vampire Grace. Now I'll use her effect to force you to send a spell card from your deck to your grave."
Kaiba sends a copy of The Flute of Summoning Dragon from his deck to the grave.
"Now because a card was sent from your deck to your grave by the effect of a Vampire card on my field, I can send one Vampire monster from my hand or deck to my grave to destroy one card on your field. So I discard Vampire Grace to destroy your Blue-Eyes White Dragon."
Dawn discards a second copy of Vampire Grace and Kaiba places his Blue-Eyes in the graveyard.
"Next I activate Book of Life, by banishing one monster from your grave, I can special summon one zombie-type monster from my graveyard; Vampire Grace number two. Unfortunately, since my trap specifies defence mode, I can only attack you for 3550 damage, so you still have 450LP… but I'm still going to do that. And since my Vampire Lady dealt damage to you, and my second Vampire Grace hasn't used her effect yet, I can force you to send two monster cards from your deck to your grave."

Kaiba sends a second and third copy of Blue-Eyes to his grave as Dawn ends her turn and he starts his next.
"I place one card face down and play a monster card in defence mode…"
Kaiba makes a move that looks identical to Dawn's opening move, placing one card face down in both his monster, and his spell/trap zones.
"My turn, I sacrifice my Vampire Lady to summon Vampire Lord(2000atk), same effect, he just comes back from the dead during my standby phase if he's killed by card effect. Anyway, Vampire Grace forces you to send a monster from your deck to the grave."
Kaiba sends his ritual monster Paladin of White dragon to his graveyard.
"Now I'll send a second Vampire Lady to the grave to trigger my field spell's effect, destroying your back row card."
Dawn searches her deck for a Vampire Lady and places it in the graveyard.
"I'll activate the card in response; Castle of Dragon's Soul. Now since it was destroyed, I get to special summon a dragon-type monster from out of play. My Blue-Eyes is back."
Kaiba flips his trap card, then places it in the graveyard before returning his banished Blue-Eyes to the field.
"Crap…. I can only use my field spell once per turn…"
Kaiba smiles smugly.
"I know."
Dawn sighs.
"I switch my Vampire Grace to defence mode, set a card and since I can't switch my Lord to defence mode, I might as well attack your defence monster with it."
Kaiba shrugs as he places his Luster Dragon in the graveyard. While he's doing that Dawn places a card in her spell/trap zone.
"An acceptable loss… My turn?"
Dawn nods.
"Excellent. I activate the magic card Burst Stream of Destruction. This card is basically Raigeki, which I assume you know what does… the only difference is my Blue-Eyes has to be face up for me to use it, and it can't attack this turn… however, no such restrictions fall upon my next monster; I activate Dragon's Mirror, banishing the two Blue-Eyes in my grave and the one on my field to fusion summon Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon."
As Dawn places her three Vampire monsters in the graveyard Kaiba special summons his bigger dragon ace from his extra deck.
"Now Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon will attack for the game. You put up a good fight, but now it's over…"
"Not quite, I activate the trap card Call of the Haunted to special summon Pyramid Turtle back from the graveyard. You may still deal damage, but it's not over yet, and I get a monster once my turtle's destroyed."
Dawn flips her trap card and summons back her Pyramid Turtle from her graveyard, in attack mode as the trap specifies.
"Very well, let's see what else you possess; Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, attack Pyramid Turtle."

"Pyramid Turtle's death allows me to summon my secret ace; Vampire Vamp (2000atk)!"
Kaiba raises an eyebrow.
"Now I'm curious… I end my turn."
Dawn draws a card.
"Now, during my standby phase, since he was essentially raigekied, Vampire Lord summons himself back from the grave. Next I'll banish him to special summon Vampire Genesis(3000atk) and I'll normal summon Vampire Lady. Because a 'Vampire' monster was normal summoned to my field, Vampire Vamp allows me to target one monster on the field with attack higher than hers and equip it to her, she then gains attack equal to its attack (6500atk) now I'll attack with her for game."

Kaiba applauds the girl.
"Congratulations, you've bested an old man who hasn't played duel monsters in nearly five years. I wonder how you'd fare against your sister… I feel you may need a new deck first… Come, we'll speak with the matron, then on to Pegasus' castle…"
Kaiba stands, Dawn following his lead as they head to the matron's office.
A/N; I honestly don't know what made me write this much less upload it XD
but hey, I thought those that are following my Yu-Gi-Oh GX works might be interested to know that I've not given up on the world of Yu-Gi-Oh, I'm simply trying my hardest to focus on finishing the stories that are already up and can be finished before I post new ones. ( I don't like being one of those authors with tonnes of unfinished work that hasn't been updated in years and still posts new stuff) but unfortunately I've lost interest in several of my own works so I need to rekindle that passion if/when I can...
Fingers crossed, sorry for ranting, and enjoy
