Chapter twelve
Mckennah's POV
I sat in history class the next day trying to listen to the lecture Alaric was giving. Try as I might I was distracted by the itching on my side. Bonnie kept elbowing me in the side trying to keep me still. I looked at her an apology.
When the bell rang Bonnie pulled me out and into the girl's room. " What's going on? "
" I'm sorry Bonnie I just have this rash thing on my side and it itches. " I said lifting my shirt to show her.
She takes a look and frowns. " This shouldn't be happening... Vampires don't get rashes… I don't think. "
" How did you- "
Bonnie cut her eyes at me. " I'm a witch Mckennah. I can feel living things. "
" Oh. " I said simply.
" … COme on. :" She said pulling me back out of the girl's room.
We went in the direction of the exit and I hesitated. " Where are we going? "
" We're going to see my grams. She'll know what to do. " She said continuing to pull me along.
We get in her car and five minutes later we were pulling up. As soon as we got out an older woman walked out looking worried.
" Why aren't you at school baby? " She asked eyeing me.
Bonnie grabbed my hand and we walked closer. " This is Elena's sister Mckennah. She has a problem and it's kind of impossible. "
" You trust her? " Gram's asked.
Bonnie hesitated then nodded. " Yeah. "
" Well come on then. We ain't got all day. " She said ushering us in her house.
We went right in the kitchen and Grams folded her arms and went back to analyzing me. " Now what seems to be the problem vampire? "
If I was still human I'd have blushed. " Well… " I said lifting up my shirt.
The older witch's eyes widened and came closer. " This shouldn't be possible. "
" That's what I said. Do you know what this means? " Bonnie asked.
Grams left the kitchen for a second before returning with an old leather-bound book. Opening it she held her hand over the pages and they flipped one by one by themselves. When she found the right one she stopped and began reading. I was on pins and needles just waiting for her to speak.
" I was right. This shouldn't be possible… " She muttered.
Bonnie went and looked over her shoulder. " What is it? "
" There is old magic at work. This specific spell dates back to the dark ages. It's impossible to do because it's in Viking script and the language is dead. No one knows how to pronounce the incantation. " Gram's said reading what looked like notes on the spell.
I ran my fingers through my hair. " So someone put a spell on me? "
" Not on you dear, on your bloodline. It seems that you were the intended target. WHoever put it to work wanted to know when you were going to be born. The magic is so old that it must override your healing ability in that one spot. " She said coming closer to examine it.
Woah. This is too much to handle. " Why in one spot? "
" It's just a hunch, but I think you'll find your answer when whatever you're scratching out forms. The itching is just a side effect. When it does come back and I'll be able to tell you more. Right now I'm just taking stabs in the dark. " She said still looking at the rash. " Now you two get on back to school.
And there came the badass professor Bonnie told me about. We both nodded and she followed us out. She stood on the porch and watched as we rode away.
After school Damon was waiting for me by my car. " So now I'm reduced to stalking my own girlfriend? "
" I heard what happened… At the tomb. You put my sister's life in danger Damon! For what? A stupid book? And since you want to know what I've been doing... What's going on with you and Elena? " I said unloading the questions that had been brewing in my mind since I overheard their conversation.
Damon looked genuinely surprised by my outburst. He Opened my door for me and the went around to the passenger side. Once we were in a more private setting he sighed.
" I know things got out of hand… Where were you that night? I wanted you to be there that's the only reason I used Elena. " He said wanting an answer.
I rolled my eyes. " I heard the conversation you and Elena had at the boarding house that night. You two have been hanging out behind my back. You kissed her! What am I supposed to think? "
He at least had the decency to look guilty.
" I think we need to spend some time apart. " I said.
His head shot up in anger. " You're breaking up with me? "
" You're not even denying that you have feelings for my sister! What kind of insecure girl do you think I am? ONe that will be okay with being the second place like Caroline? Never. " I said firmly.
Damon apparently had, had enough of this conversation. He opened the door and was gone before I could react. I'm not gonna lie, I had hoped he would take it better. Hope's a bitch.
I was face first in a vat of Chunky Monkey when Elena walked into my room without knocking. Looking up at her from my ice cream I couldn't resist giving her a dirty look.
" Damon told me what happened… I'm sorry. Nothing happened between us, but I think he wanted it. " She said
Rolling my eyes I scooped some more ice cream in my mouth.
" Come on Kennah, we were doing so good. " She said sitting next to me. " We're sisters… Damon is a jerk and you deserve better. "
I finally put my ice cream down and sighed. " You're right. I guess I was just trying to make it work because I thought he had some grand reason for turning me. Like he did it because he really wanted to be with me. Now I think he was just bored. "
" Well, now you know. So… I'm adopted. " She said dropping a bomb.
My eyes widened. " Come again? "
" I found a picture in Stefan's room the night I hit that man and you were staked. It was his, Katherine… I look just like her. " She said with a glazed look in her eyes.
Wow. " What does that have to do with anything? "
" Katherine must have had a child before she was turned. It's the only thing that makes sense. Since she was a Pierce with no ties to the Gilbert name. " She said with her eyebrows furrowed.
I shook my head. " This just keeps getting messier and messier. I'm really not sure that I want to know any more details. "
" I need to find out who my mother is Mckennah. Please help me. " She said with pleading eyes.
I wanted to scream at her. Make her understand that I have my own problems that I'm dealing with. But of course, I gave in to those doe eyes.
" Fine… " I said reluctantly.
She threw her arms around me. " Thank you so much! "
I didn't say anything else. I just let the feeling that this is leading to bad territory fill my being. SOmething big is coming… I can feel it in my bones.
