Jackson looked back and forth between April and the therapist for a few moments as the room was silent, "what do you want to do about Finnley?" He asked her.
"I... I don't know." April couldn't believe those words were coming out of her mouth. For months, she'd been dreaming of Finn living with them but that was before... At that point she thought she couldn't have her own children or that Jackson said wouldn't want to risk it.
"I told you yesterday that I'm willing to reopen that discussion. I know how against it I was but I've been doing a lot of thinking about this and if adopting him is what you want..." Jackson told her. When she didn't respond right away he continued: "we had barely talked about having children when you got those cysts but while you were in surgery I did think that maybe we could one day adopt. The thing is; I thought that when I met the boy or girl we were going to adopt that I would know right away, that I would feel that bond that parents have with their children. I didn't feel that when we met Finnley, but I can see that you did and maybe one day I will too. So if you want this, just tell me."
"I don't know. I really don't know and I feel terrible but I'm not sure right now."
''You're not nervous are you?'' April asked Jackson as they were waiting for Arizona in one of the exam rooms.
Jackson smiled at her, ''just a little bit. It has been a while since your last appointment,'' he told her.
"We'll be fine. Don't worry. Whatever happens I promise we'll work it out together." April leaned in to kiss Jackson before the door opened.
''Hey are you guys ready for this?'' Arizona asked them as she closed the door behind her and smiled at April and Jackson.
''Absolutely,'' Jackson replied as he held April's hand.
"Go for it." April agreed.
''Okay, I am just going to check if maybe new cysts have formed, it shouldn't take long,'' Arizona told them.
April took a deep breath as Arizona began the ultrasound. She kept her eyes on Jackson until Arizona began to speak.
With a frown on her face Arizona turned to April, ''have you had any cramps or abnormal bleeding in the last few weeks?'' She asked the redhead.
"Yeah... I just figured it was my period. I took some meds and I was fine. Why are you asking me that?"
Arizona turned the screen turned them a bit and pointed at a small dot on it, ''that looks like an amniotic sac, but it is empty...'' she hesitated before continuing, ''it looks like you may have had a miscarriage recently.''
"Oh my... I didn't even know I was pregnant. I've been on the pill, we used protection. I don't... How did this happen?''
Arizona turned off the machine, ''there is no way to tell how you even got pregnant. No birth control is a hundred percent effective all the time. As for why you miscarried... sometimes it just happens, for no reason in particular,'' Arizona told her. ''We can remove the amniotic sac or you can wait for your body to miscarry that too. After that - seeing that there are no cysts - there's no reason you shouldn't be able to get pregnant again.''
Before April could say anything. She heard the door slam as Jackson left the room. "Jackson?" April asked, getting up from the table.
Arizona looked on while turning off the ultrasound machine. She watched April wipe off her stomach, push her shirt down and chase after Jackson.
April ran as quickly as she could. She finally caught up with him. "Hey what's wrong are you okay?"
Jackson ran a hand over the back of his head, ''yeah... no... I- I don't know. This is my fears coming to life. The exact reason why I didn't want you to get pregnant was because I didn't want you to miscarry - to have to go through losing a baby. I thought I was avoiding that and now it turns out it has already happened.''
"Jackson, you didn't know. Neither did I. Please don't do this. We promised we'd work together did we not?''
''Yeah we did,'' Jackson told her with a sigh, ''this is just a bit frustrating.''
"I know, listen, can we just have a night without parental issues? I miss you babe.'' April told him.
''I miss you too,'' Jackson told her as he wrapped his arms around her. He knew that he hadn't known about the pregnancy nor the miscarriage until just now, but it still felt like a loss.
"I know babe. Hey feel like cooking tonight? Do you want to go out to dinner?'' She asked, hoping he'd say yes to date night.
"Babe when I said I wanted a dinner date, I didn't think we'd go to a place this fancy. I'm not even sure what to order," April looked at the menu of the Italian restaurant they had gone to. She was still in awe of how breathtaking the restaurant looked.
''Only the best for you,'' Jackson told her with a small grin, ''besides, I think we have deserved this - especially you. I can't tell you how much I've missed you this last month and I'll do anything I possibly can to never have to be apart from you for that long again.''
"I don't want to talk about that now can we just relax - Oh my god. What's Stephanie doing here?"
This caught Jackson off guard, ''what?'' He asked as he quickly turned around to look at the entrance to the restaurant, seeing Stephanie walk in he got nervous. Things never went smoothly between him and April when Stephanie was around. As he tried to think of an escape plan, a way to avoid disaster, he and Stephanie locked eyes.
Stephanie made their way over to their table - rushing over whilst being hesitant, as if she wasn't sure about what to do. As she came to a stop beside their table she didn't know what to say, ''I- I... I didn't expect to see you here,'' she told them before glancing over at a table a little further away.
Jackson looked over and saw Matthew Parker - an intern from the same year as Stephanie - sitting at the table, ''you're on a date here,'' he stated as he glanced over at April. He felt awkward but didn't want to show it - risking that April got the idea he wasn't over Stephanie would only be another problem he didn't need.
''Yeah,'' Stephanie told them as she smiled up at Parker, ''I'm just going to... yeah.'' She walked away without giving Jackson and April another look.
"Unbelievable. I want to go home!'' April told Jackson.
''Sweetie, they're over there, we're over here. There's no reason why we can't have a lovely night out to celebrate you being back here,'' Jackson told her.
"Jackson. Edwards is always around. Even when she's not around she's in our conversations. You forget she's the one told your mom about my cysts..."
''April, I did not forget that - but however shitty that is of her I do not want to leave this place just because she's here. If we simply leave every time she's near then she controls us; I don't want to let that happen,'' Jackson said.
"Fine! If you don't want to go. I will. Honestly J, I don't want to fight. I really have lost my appetite. I'll take a cab and meet you at home. Enjoy your dinner."
''April, don't do this,'' Jackson said as he stood up as well. ''How about we just wait another couple of minutes and if there's any conflict because of Stephanie then we'll leave.''
"Okay, okay, 30 minutes."
''Thank you,'' Jackson told her as they both sat back down, ''now let's order.''
Jackson broke away from kissing April for a second to catch this breath, ''I am really glad you decided to stay tonight,'' he told her in between kisses.
"Me too. I wasn't going to go anywhere I was just really mad. Stephanie irritates me to no end. I've never met anyone that could be so hateful."
Jackson took a step away from April, still holding one of her hands in his own, ''maybe we should just agree not to talk about Stephanie all night,'' he told April. ''And instead just focus on you and me.''
"Okay. What'd you have in mind?'' April asked playfully as she began kissing his neck.
''Just having fun, like we did last night,'' Jackson told her, ''as long as we're careful of course.''
"Jackson I don't want to be careful can't we just let the caution go for tonight? Please?"
Jackson broke away from her again, ''April, you heard what Arizona said this afternoon - we have to be careful right now-'' he told her before she stopped him from finishing his sentence.
"Shut up and kiss me. Please. It's just one night.'' April looked at Jackson, trying to gauge his response.
''April, you have no idea how much I want to do just that, but I am not going to until you agree with me that we're going to be careful tonight,'' Jackson told her as he took a deep breath.
"Jackson I'm not trying to conceive. I just want to make love to my husband. I'm going to ask you one more time. Will you please not cautiously make love to me?"
''What you might not know about me is that I can make very passionate love while still being cautious,'' Jackson told her flirtatiously.
"Get over here!" April demand as she quickly passed him a condom and a pulled him down on top of her.
