Exposed
"Edward are you okay?" I tried to make my face calm, even though my insides were panicked and wondering how I was going to explain myself out of this one.
"I'm fine." He was bringing his hand up to feel his head.
"Be careful. I think you hit your head pretty hard."
"Ow." He frowned as if noticing it for the first time.
"That's what I thought." I had a hard time holding back my laugh. Now wasn't the time for laughing, I was currently in very close and intimate quarters with the one human I should never be in this situation with. Plus I had just exposed my secret to him.
"How..." he began. "How did you get over here so fast?"
I hid my wince and made my face stay in its concerned mask. "I was standing right next to you."
He looked at me confused and I could see his eyes calculating me. What was he thinking? But before I could dwell to much on it I could here the people around us trying to get us out safely.
"Don't move!" a teacher yelled. Then they started yelling to the person who was driving the van, telling them to get out.
Edward tried standing up. What was he thinking? He could have a concussion! "I would stay put for now. Wait till the medics come and check you out." I pushed him back down to the ground, trying to be as gentle as possible.
"But it's cold." He frowned.
I couldn't contain my laughter this time. But I was thinking more of my cold hand than the cold ground when he said that.
"You were over there," he continued. "You were by your car."
I clenched my teeth, cursing my stupidity. "No, I wasn't" I hated lying but my family's safety was more important than this boy and his feelings.
"I saw you." Why did he have to be so observant? Why did I have to be so drawn to him? I did not need an extra reason to kill this boy. Now that he saw my speed, my strength it was just another reason for me to let go of my perfect control. He couldn't know about us.
The people around the cars were still milling about chaotically.
"Edward, I was standing with you, and I pulled you out of the way." I gave him my most sincere look and stared fully into his eyes; trying to convince him.
"No." His jaw set. He was so stubborn. This was not what needed to happen.
"Please, Edward."
"Why?" He was angry and would not back down.
He was not going to let this go. I had to get this fixed. "Trust me." I pleaded.
He paused a moment, deciding what to do. "Will you tell me everything later?"
Of course. HE just can't give up. How did I get my self and my family into this situation? "Fine." I was so angry with myself, my words came out a little harsh. Edward thought the anger was directed toward him and I could see his body tense.
"Fine." He replied, his anger clear in his voice.
Finally, the cars were separated and the medical team was able to get in with there stretchers. I waved the EMT that came toward me and pointed toward Edward. "I am fine but I believe he bumped his head pretty hard." They nodded at me and focused all their attention on Edward. Thankfully they all new me from Carlisle and trusted me to know if I was hurt or not.
I got into the ambulance and waited as they loaded him up. I could see my family near the car. None of them looked particularly happy. Rose looked like she was going to rip my head off, and knowing her I would not rule it out. I would have to watch myself around her when I got home.
Alice was on the phone.
Carlisle? I whispered, trusting she would hear me. She nodded and continued talking to him on the phone explaining the situation.
Soon, we were ready to go and we were heading toward the hospital.
I took the car ride to think of a way out of this situation. But by time we got to the building, I was still drawing a blank.
