EDITED: 11/27/14 (Happy Thanksgiving!)

CLARY

I was putting the last of the dishes away, when I heard Jace coming down the stairs. I went out to the hall. He smiled at me. I looked him over. About six of the top buttons on his shirt were undone, which made me roll my eyes. I moved closer to him. My hands reached out, to fasten the buttons.

"What? Are you not enjoying the view?" he asked, as his hands closed around my wrists.

"I am, Mr. Herondale, it's just that very 'elderly' woman, as you say, is coming to visit us, and I don't want her to die from shock."

"Hmmm, you make a convincing argument, but I'm pretty sure she's put me in her will, so it wouldn't be the end of the world," Jace smiled.

"Jace!" I exclaimed, just as there was a knock at the door.

"Nooo," Jace groaned," I liked where this was going."

"If you thought that you were going to get lucky, then you were very wrong."

"Well, there's always later," he whispered, as he let go of my wrists

I turned to walk towards the door. I was about to unlock the it, when I thought better of it. I looked back at Jace.

"Finish buttoning up your shirt," I said.

"No," he beamed, as he began to undo the remaining buttons," I think I'll go shirtless."

"Jace," I warned.

He slowly slipped the shirt off. I shot Jace an annoyed look. He was impossible.

"Fine. Go shirtless. I'm not the one who's going to be cold."

"I'm just showing off what the Angel gave me."

"Well, the Angel gave you different sized nipples," I told him, squinting," Now put your shirt back on."

His eyes widened, and he looked down at his chest. I smiled to myself. He was going to have fun with that. There was another knock. I turned back, and opened the door. Tessa smiled at me.

"I'm sorry it took so long," I apologized," Jace is having a little fashion crisis. He seems to be unable to keep a shirt on."

"Well, he's a Herondale, so that sounds about right," I heard Jem say from behind her.

I laughed and motioned for her them to come in. I saw Tessa's eyes widen unexpectedly, at the same time that Jem's gaze softened. When I turned to see what she was looking at I saw Jace standing mid way up the stairs, clutching his shirt to his chest, with a look of hurt and sadness on his face. You would have thought something much more serious had happened.

"Really, Jace?" I said, as I closed the door, and locked it," Get over it."

"You insulted me, Clary! Insulted me!"

"Okay, we're going to go into the living room now," I said, turning to Tessa and Jem.

I began walking towards the other room. I turned back to see if they were following me. They weren't, so I nodded towards the living room. Tessa sighed, and Jem smirked. Then they both went before me, into the living room.

"When you're done with your little toddler tantrum you can join us."

I then left him. In the time they had been alone, Tessa and Jem had made themselves comfortable on our sofa. They looked up at me expectantly.

"Sorry about that," I apologized.

"It's fine," Tessa laughed," He reminds me of Will."

Only a split second after she laughed her face fell a little. I could tell that it saddened her. How could it not? She had been married for almost sixty years. No amount of time could ever take away the pain of losing him. Not even Jem would be able to ever do that fully, though I would never say that out loud.

"It makes me worry a little bit," I said, in an attempt to change the subject slightly.

"What does?" Tessa asked, shifting in her seat.

"The Herondale spirit," I told her," It obviously runs in the blood."

"Oh, that," she laughed," I'm sorry, but I think it may. You're in for a fun time."

"How has any Herondale mother ever not gone insane?"

"We all go insane, it's just that we somehow learn to deal with the insanity."

I nodded in agreement. I was so screwed. Mini Jace was going to be walking all over me.

"There was one particularly testing time with James. I'll never forget the night Magnus brought him home drunk. At the time were more worried than angry, but I never let him forget it. It's understandable though. James had been going through his own trying time, without our knowledge," Tessa said.

Jem gave a small smile. I knew that he looked back upon Tessa's children with great affection. Though that wasn't a great surprise. Tessa was the love of his life, and even though he had been in the back seat during that time, he had still been there. They had been his family. He was the one they called when help was needed, no matter what the rules of the Silent City were.

"Oh those were the times," he murmured, as he glanced over at Tessa.

"It was all Grace Cartwright's doing. That girl. I swear," she continued," She nearly tore our family apart."

"How?" I asked.

"Well, you see, Gra-" Tessa began to say.

"Sorry, about that," Jace apologized, as he entered the room, interrupting Tessa.

We all looked at him. Tessa stood up, and walked over to him.

"I think I deserve a proper hug," she said.

Jace wrapped his arms around her. After the hug Tessa sat back down on the sofa, and Jace sat in the love seat across from me.

"Clary didn't punish you too badly, I hope," Tessa inquired.

"If by not to badly you mean she completely decimated my self confidence and my peace with my body, then yes," he answered.

"Oh shush," I told him.

Tessa's eyebrows went up. Clearly she was amused and intrigued. She nodded, signaling for him to go on.

"Clary insulted my nipples. She told me that one is larger than the other," Jace explained.

"Well, if there was ever any doubt in my mind about your being a Herondale, I can assure that it has been resolved," Jem sighed.

I couldn't tell whether it was a sigh of disappointment in how much shallowness could fit into one person, or if it was just because any hope he had for Jace's redemption had vanished with that sentence. Then again, it could have been both. Who knew? They were both valid points.

"I'll take that as a compliment," said Jace.

Of course that's how you'd take it, I thought to myself, I'm married to an idiot.

"So how are things?" Tessa asked.

"Well, as you can see, I'm already getting my parenting practice in," I answered.

"I meant between the two of you," she winked," How has being back together been?"

"Beneficial," Jace smirked," We've been very busy."

"JACE!"

Jem looked at Jace with wide eyes. Apparently the overly dirty mindedness was a newer Herondale trait. He wasn't used to it like I was.

"I am an open book," he declared.

"Well, shut that book, and be a little bit more polite," I said.

Jace rolled his eyes, and looked over at Tessa, expectantly. I could tell he was ready for another question. I prayed to the Angel that he would keep his big mouth shut. I could also tell that Tessa was deciding what to ask.

"Have you been thinking of any names for the baby?"

"I was thinking Jace if it's a boy, and Jacette if it's a girl," Jace announced.

"No," I said," We haven't started."

"Picking out names is hard," Tessa told us," It took Will and I six months to agree on names, until I suggested the one I had been thinking of the whole time. I don't think anything could have been better, or more beautiful."

"We don't have any Silent Brothers that we're friends with though," I said," Except you of course."

"You should choose something you like, something special," Tessa went on," It doesn't have to be after anyone though. When you give your baby a name that name then becomes special to you."

"Hmm," I nodded," All I know is that the names Sebastian, Jonathan, Christopher, and Valentine are not on our list."

"Why not?"

I looked at her. She wasn't serious was she.

"I'm sorry," she apologized," That was a really bad attempt at a joke."

I let out a sigh of relief. I had been truly worried.

"She still has 19th Century humor," Jem smiled, as he reached over and twined his fingers through hers."

That was the love I wanted. The love where you could go for over a hundred years apart, and still know that what you felt was eternal. The type of love that never fell apart.

I looked over at Jace. He saw it too. We already loved each other, but not like that. What we were watching was what we hoped that our future would hold. That was what we would have to attain. It wouldn't be easy, but we had love.

We had a doctors appointment later that afternoon. Jace wasn't too thrilled with the whole idea, but he went with me. I think that the whole mundane doctor thing was frightening for him. He would have prefered that I stick with the Silent Brothers, but there was no way that was going to happen.

It was going to be my second visit with my new doctor. After what had happened, I had decided to switch. Dr. Marston was amazing. I never had to worry about anything.

"I am a law enforcement officer," Jace mumbled to himself," I am a law enforcement officer."

We were getting ready to go through the portal. I had gone upstairs for only a few minutes, to put my hair up, and I had come back down to find Jace pacing.

"Calm down," I said," This isn't going to be an interrogation."

"What if I say something or do something wrong?" he asked, looking up at me with his beautiful golden eyes.

"This isn't your first day of kindergarten. You're going to be fine."

"What if she doesn't like me?" he panicked.

He was such a baby sometimes. Again, this was a man that killed demons for a living. I don't think that he could have been any more ridiculous than he was being.

"Well she liked you before. Unless you said something to her, she should still feel the same way," I told him.

"You just said I would be fine," he hyperventilated," Oh no. I said something."

"Oh my goodness, Jace, stop."

"You have no idea what I'm going through here, Clary."

Was he kidding me? I really wanted to slap him, and tell him to pull himself together. However I used my self control, and remained calm.

"Really?" I asked, as I looked down at my stomach," I don't think you know what I'M going through."

He glanced over at me. He got it right then.

"You're right," he said," Let's just get this over with."

Would you like to know the gender of your baby?" Dr. Marston asked," Or should I say babies."

Jace's eyes widened. I knew what he was thinking. How were we going to swing that one? Our hands were about full as they were and the baby hadn't even arrived yet. Also he was already worried.

"Babies?" Jace coughed.

Dr. Marston smiled. I knew that she was joking, but he didn't. He was buying it. If he had just thought about it he would have realized that she wasn't serious. I was six months pregnant. If we were having twins I would have known months ago.

He continued to look worried. I was going to tell him.

"She's kidding, Jace," I said.

"She is?"

"Yeah."

He looked down at me. It was a little bit weird to be lying on my back. It was so disorienting .

"So, would you like to know the gender of your baby?" she repeated.

I looked to Jace for the answer. It was difficult to tell what he was thinking. I knew what I wanted. He cleared his throat. I glanced over at Dr. Marston.

"Can we have a minute to decide?" I asked.

"No problem," she told me, as she stood up," I'll go get your amniocentesis ready."

I shuddered at the thought. It sounded like it was going to be painful. When she was gone I looked back to Jace.

"What do you want to do?" I inquired.

"Whatever you want," he told me.

"Well, I know what I want, but if that isn't what you want then that's fine."

"Clary, just tell me what you want to do."

"I want to wait," I said," I think it will be more fun of we don't know."

"Thank goodness," he breathed," I didn't want to tell you that I didn't want to know. I thought- I thought-"

"That I would think you're afraid?"

"Yeah."

"It's okay to be afraid," I told him," I know I am."

He leaned down and kissed me. I felt like we'd taken another step. We were a little bit closer to being better. There was a knock at the door, as he pulled back.

"Are you ready?" he asked, as he took my hand and gave it a squeeze.

I shook my head. But I knew it was going to be okay. Everything was better with him. Sure I was about to have a giant needle inserted into me, but right then it didn't matter. Not as long as he was there.

Later that night, long after we'd both gone to bed, I heard the front door open. I was up and alert in an instant. Jace? Not so much...

"Shit," I muttered, as I tried to shake him awake," Get up."

He didn't so much as even change his breathing. Some Shadowhunter he was.

"Jace!" I hissed, urgently.

"No, Alec, I don't care that Magnus handcuffed you to the bed," Jace moaned, as he tried to brush my hands off.

Yeah, there was no way he was going to get up. He was about as useless as a box of rocks.

I flipped back the covers, and rolled out of the bed. If you want something to be done I guess you have to do it yourself. I felt under Jace's pillow for the seraph blade that he kept. Nothing. Of course not. Why would there be. On the one freaking night it would have actually been of some use he didn't put it under his pillow.

Giving up, my attention turned towards the nightstand. My hands searched for anything that might be of any use. Finally they closed around around something smooth. And fabricy? Crap. It was a lamp. How the hell was a lamp supposed to help me?

That's when it all made sense. No wonder people were always shown wielding lamps as they crept through their homes to apprehend intruders. Or at least they did in the absence of a bat. And of course we didn't have a bat, we were Shadowhunters.

I snuck out of the bedroom. I was about to close the door behind me, when I thought better of it. Even though my pleading for Jace to get up had failed, surely my screams would wake him up. Right? They had god damned better. Or else he was fired.

As I descended the stairs I prayed to the Angel that the stairs wouldn't creak. Thankfully they didn't. When I reached the bottom, I listened for any noises hinting as to where the intruder might have been. There was an indiscernible noise coming from the kitchen.

I turned and began towards the sounds. I did my best to remain calm, but it wasn't easy. As I finally got ready to turn the corner, I took a breath to steady myself.

My head craned around the corner. The freezer door was open, filling the room with a faint glow. Who breaks into a house and uses the freezer for light. Hello light switches. It was easy to tell that no one was in the kitchen.

That's when I heard sounds comparable to those of a cat, which was having its tail sliced off, coming from the living room. Geez. Couldn't they just keep it simple and stay in one room? The anticipation of imminent conflict was seriously beginning to get to me.

Too bad I was greatly disappointed when I got to the living room. Not that Isabelle was a disappointment. Well, except, um... Right then she was. It wasn't the fact that Isabelle was sitting on my couch at two o'clock it the freaking morning. I mean, she was all done up every single day of her life, and she was gorgeous. And right then was no exception either, with her in her beautifully patterned sweater that cut off mid thigh, and her expensive leggings.

However, that's about where the fabulousness ended. Because there Isabelle Lightwood sat on our couch at two in the morning wailing like a baby. In addition her mascara was running down her then red cheeks. Isabelle's hair wasn't looking so hot either. It was stuck together in a horrifyingly tangled pony tail. And to top it all off in front of her was a brand new carton of ice cream ( I had literally just bought it the day before), which Isabelle clearly already downed half of.

"Excuse my asking, but what the hell is this?" I asked.

She looked up in surprise. I could tell that she was relieved that it was me. Isabelle's crying lessened slightly, and she put down the spoon that she had been holding, in order to wipe her eyes. I might add that it only made her make up worse.

"Nice outfit," she blubbered.

I looked down at my plain t-shirt and underwear. I frowned slightly. Not all of us slept in lingerie, like Isabelle. And was that really all she had to say? I mean she was the one clearly having pity party on my couch.

"Nice make up," I replied.

That set her off again. Only the sobbing was worse this time. Okay, I probably shouldn't have said that. Feeling bad, I set the lamp down on the coffee table, walked over to her, sat down on the couch, and wrapped my arms around her. I pulled the sobbing Isabelle to me.

"What happened?" I inquired, as soothingly as I possibly could manage.

"I (sniffle) left (sniffle) him (sniffle)."

"I'm sorry, but what? Did you just say that you left him?"

She nodded into my t-shirt.

"You left my best friend," I said, which earned me an upset look from Isabelle," Sorry. You left one of my best friends, and you came to my house at two in the morning to cry to me about it and to eat the ice cream I need to satisfy my cravings?"

"I'm a terrible person," she cried.

How was I supposed respond to that. I was pretty sure that it was a common consensus that Isabelle wasn't Mother Theresa or Gandhi, but come on, she wasn't a terrible person, even if she wasn't the best.

"So why did you leave him?" I asked, in an attempt to not have to deal with the 'terrible person' comment.

"Because he'll die if he stays with me," she wailed.

"He'll die even if you stay with him," I said,"Everyone dies, Isabelle."

At least most everyone did. You know minus warlocks, faeries, angels, demons, and vampires. Ohh. Shit. Vampires. Simon had been a vampire and he had only lost his immortality because the Silent Brothers turned him back. And who had pressured the Clave into allowing the Silent Brothers change him? Isabelle.

"But he'll die sooner, because he's a Shadowhunter."

"If that's so then what is leaving him going to do?" I asked.

"Keep him safe."

"Isabelle, he is in this world. He made his choice. He's not going to be able to go back. There's nothing you can do."

"Shit," she moaned," I just left him."

"Come on," I told her.

"What?" she asked, wiping away her tears with the back of her hand.

"We're going to go to your house," I said.

"Why?"

"You're going to fix this."

"No, Clary," she shook her head," I can't. He won't want to see me."

"He loves you. Even if he's angry he'll want to know that you at least made it somewhere safe."

"Are you sure?" she asked.

"Yes," I answered," Now let's go."

She set the ice cream down on the coffee table and stood up. I watched as she wiped her face some more, which only made her make up look worse.

"You should probably change," she sniffled.

I looked down at what I was wearing. Yeah. A t-shirt and a pair of underwear was definitely a no go.

"Alright," I said," I'll go put on some other clothes, and you can go clean up in the bathroom."

She nodded and then went towards the bathroom. I then went towards the stairs. Call me shallow, but as I went upstairs all I could think about was how she had better put my freaking ice cream back in the freezer.

I quietly slipped into our bedroom. I was pretty sure that Jace hadn't even moved while I was gone. He was worthless. I went over to the dresser and pulled out some jeans and a sweater. I pulled them on, and then went to the closet to get a coat. When I was done I went back downstairs. Isabelle was already waiting for me.

"Are you ready?" I asked.

"No," she said," But I don't think that makes a difference to you."

"No, it doesn't," I agreed," Let's go."

We went to the room the portal was, and then we left. Isabelle and I landed about a mile away their apartment. I wanted to give her time to calm down before she faced Simon.

We walked in complete silence. Sadly for her, not me ( I really wanted to go home and sleep), it only took us about twenty minutes to get to their apartment.

"You're going to have to go in," I said.

"Okay," she breathed.

Isabelle inhaled deeply, and then we entered the building. On the bright side, for her (I was pregnant) it was a walk up, so she had even more freaking time. When we got to the door she pulled her key out of her pocket, and unlocked it. As slowly as she could possibly manage she pushed open the door.

Surprisingly, the apartment wasn't dark. All of the lights were on, and there were loud noises being made by metal. It took me a moment to realize what was going on. That was when Jace walked out of the kitchen.

"There you are, Clary," he said, as he approached me, and gave me a big hug," I was worried when I woke up and you weren't next to me."

"You don't seem too worried right now," I responded.

"I saw your clothes on the ground, and I knew that you had probably gone out, though I assumed it would be to see Tessa," he told me, as he looked Isabelle over.

"Oh, I see. Did the Clave summon you?"

"Yeah, there was an attack at the Los Angeles Institute, and they want us to go."

"Isn't that their problem?" I asked," Can't they handle it?"

"That's what I thought," he told me," But they think otherwise. We're not the only ones being sent."

"What type of attack was it?"

"They didn't say."

"I should go get my gear on," Isabelle said, as she began to walk away.

"No," Jace told her, grabbing her arm," You're staying here."

"No, I'm not," she warned, shooting him a glare as she ripped her arm from his grasp.

"The Clave ordered you to not go," he explained," I don't know why."

"That doesn't make sense," I interjected.

"I know, but we don't have time to deal with this right now. You're just going to have to stay here."

Isabelle was angry. So was I. There was no reason for her not to go. She was able bodied and she was willing

That was when Simon entered the room. Both of their faces fell.

"Simon," she whispered.

He began to walk towards us. I thought that he was going to hug her, but he didn't.

"I don't have time for this," he said, brushing past her," Let's go, Jace."

Jace shook his head in disapproval, before he gave me a kiss, and turned to follow Simon. Maybe I had been wrong. No, I HAD been wrong. When I looked at Isabelle I could see her heart breaking.

"Isabelle, I'll stay with you," I murmured.

"No," she said," I want to be alone. I'm going to wait for him to come back. You should go home and sleep."

"Isabelle-"

"Just go home, Clary. I'm sorry that I woke you up. It won't happen again."

"Isab-"

"Goodnight."

She turned and went towards the bedroom. I felt so bad leaving, but I knew that she really didn't want me there. There was nothing more for me to do, so I did what she told me, and I left.

NONE

Isabelle Lightwood was too distracted to notice that someone was watching her, as she moved through the shadows. Even if she had noticed it wouldn't have made a difference. She was in too much of a hurry. The orders had come in late, and if she didn't get there soon the creature would be gone.

The person who watched her couldn't help it. They had never before felt the feelings which they were experiencing. Something about her called out. She had an eerie familiarity. The watcher needed to know more. Who was this girl with ink black hair?

Isabelle muttered something under her breath, which the person watching her was unable to hear. She would never admit it, but the anticipation she felt was laced with fear. She wasn't used to hunting on her own. However she would just have to manage. Her Parabatai was at home, and the others had been called to attend to another incident. She was all alone.

They watched as she swiftly pulled her seraph blade from where it was carefully strapped to her back. They couldn't help but take in the beauty. The glow of the blade was mesmerizing. Though not as mesmerizing as Isabelle herself. It was hard for them to not come out of the shadows where they stood and approach her.

Suddenly she began to move faster. The person who watched her was faced with a difficult choice. To leave the shadows and follow her, and risk being discovered, or to stay where they stood and lose her. They knew that they shouldn't have done what they chose to do, but something inside of them told them that it was worth it. And so they followed her.

As Isabelle approached her destination she prepared for the fight. She had been assured that it would be an easy kill, and she used this to muster confidence. The sooner it was all over the better. All she wanted to do was to go home and wait for Simon.

When she entered the broken down building she was careful to make as little noise as possible. One wrong move and it could all end. In the distance she heard movement. She had arrived just in time. The creature was still there.

She took in a breath. She was ready.

The person that had followed her stood outside the entrance to where Isabelle was. They thought it would be best to wait until the mysterious girl finished her business before they made their move.

Inside Isabelle drew closer to the source of the noise. Her heart was pounding, and her breaths were shallow. She was frightened. Once again she whispered the name of her blade, only this time it was for comfort. The creature was close, she could feel it.

Just as she was about to take another step the lights flickered on. She was stunned by the sudden change. As her eyes tried to adjust she was able to catch glimpses of what surrounded her. She stepped back in fear. She had never seen anything like what she was seeing then. She knew that she had to leave. She was about make her move, when something grabbed her. She let out a scream.

The person who been following her was the only one to hear her cry out. They turned from where they stood at the entrance of the building, and ran. She truly was all alone. There was no one to hear her screams of pain.

My Dear Son,

I've written letters at many points in my life, but never one to the likes of the one you are reading now. There are so many things that I want to say to you, and I'm not quite sure if I'll say them right. I think an appropriate place to start would be your mother.

She is so beautiful and so loved. She was everything to me. I only wish I could go back and change our story. Your mother stood by me in the times when there was no one else who would. She has always been there. I wish that I could have loved her more. She always deserved much better than me.

There are so many promises that I have made, and sadly most of them were not fulfilled. However, I have made sure that there was one I never broke. I have done everything within my power to keep you and your mother safe. To the best of my ability I will you have you shielded from the horrors of this world.

We were wrong to follow Valentine. He has destroyed everything. Because of him I fear that I will never get to hold you in my arms, or see your face. I will never see look at me with your mothers eyes. I will not be able to watch your mother put you down to sleep at night. I will not be there for your first runes. For all of this I am so sorry.

We should have had years together. I was supposed to be there for you. I have failed. I can only hope you will not hold my failure against me. Though it wouldn't be unfair if you did. I have made my choices, and when the time comes you will make yours. Look to your mother for guidance, she will do whatever must be done to ensure your life is safe.

I have no doubt in my mind that you will be loved. By your mother and I. I have every hope and dream for you. And I want you to know that I trust you. I know that the decisions you will make will be right, even if they feel wrong in the moment that you make them. I am certain that you'll grow up to become the wonderful man your mother and I always dreamt that you would be.

Your father,

Stephen Herondale

Tell me what you think!

ALSO, I'M GOING FOR A REVIEW GOAL OF 25 *looks at you all hopefully*

YOU CAN FOLLOW ME ON TUMBLR AT IssiHerondale if you already follow me and I didn't follow you back, sorry! Send me an ask and I'll get right on it, I just fall behind on those things.

PLEASE REVIEW AND TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK! What is happening with Isabelle? Will Simon and her get back together? What do you think she saw?

One more thing, I've decided to make what happened between Clary and Jace in the time we missed its own chapter. That's what I'm going to be posting next time, which is why this was less than the seven thousand words I told you it would be.
