Chapter 13: Hit the Gas, Get there Fast

Bella

It's after midnight when I finally lay back down to go to bed. I recall the events of the night, trying to lull myself to sleep.

After Jake had jumped out my window, I had pulled his t-shirt back on and slid under the covers just seconds before Charlie had opened my bedroom door to let me know he was home.

That had been a close one. I thought to myself.

Then I'd called my mom and that had turned into an hour long chat. She was ecstatic for me to come visit and even more excited to meet my new boyfriend. I really dread asking her to take me to a doctor so I can get birth control. Well, at least it will be better that trying to talk to Charlie about it, that's for sure.

I can't believe Edward had left all of that stuff under a floor board. Why would he do that?

And then I begin to drift.

...

I sit up in bed with a sheen of sweat covering my forehead and stifle the scream rising in my throat. I grasp at the straws of my dream, unable to put the pieces together. Edward had shown up in my dreams for the first time in a while, probably from finding those damned pictures. I rub my eyes and glance at the clock, 2:53 a.m.

Uh, I need to go back to sleep.

"Bella?" A tinkling voice comes from the rocking chair in the corner of my room. The one where he used to sit and watch me sleep. I gasp at the sound of the familiar voice.

I must still be dreaming.

"Alice?"

A split second later she's sitting on the side of my bed, pulling me into her cold embrace.

"Oh, Bella! I was so worried about you! Edward told me not to look into your future, but I just couldn't help checking up on you periodically. And last night, I saw that you found the things Edward had left, and then your whole future disappeared. I was afraid..." Alice chokes on the words, "I was afraid you'd hurt yourself or something." Her whole body racked, as if she were sobbing, except there were no tears.

I pat her back, "I'm ok, Alice, I'm fine." I flick on my bedside lamp so I can see her better. I guess this isn't a dream, it feels real, at least.

"I know now, I got here as fast as I could. Jasper tried to talk me out of it. We had made a promise to Edward. But, just the thought of you...it scared me to death, Bella."

Anger began to rise up in me. "Promised Edward what? Just because he broke my heart and ran off never to speak to me again, didn't mean you had to dump me, too! I thought we were friends!"

"We were...we are, it's just more complicated than all that." Alice said, sadly.

I try to reel in my anger, "Ok," I sigh, "Can you at least explain?"

Alice starts to talk and I sit back with my arms crossed, trying to listen patiently. "Edward thought it was best if you and him weren't together anymore. He said it would be easier for you to move on if we weren't around. We were going to need to move on after graduation anyway, we just did it a little earlier than planned. We moved back to Alaska and we promised Edward that we wouldn't contact you in any way, and he made me specifically promise not to look into your future. I really meant it when I made the promise. But, I was so in tune with you, Bella. The first couple of times, it was an accident, seeing how bad of shape you were in though, I couldn't stop myself from checking in on you. I saw some of the reckless things you were doing with that Quileute boy. A motorcycle, Bella, really? I was so worried you were going to get yourself killed, and a little worried that was your plan. I was so glad when you stopped hanging out with him."

"When I stopped hanging out with Jacob? What are you talking about Alice?" I look at her oddly, what is she talking about?

"The last time I saw you two together was when you went to the movies with Mike. Is that who your with now? Because Bella, your room reeks of sex! I can't believe I haven't seen him with you. I didn't exactly expect you to go for Mike, but hey, at least your moving on!"

Alice is rambling, I hold up my hand to stop her. "Wait, wait, wait. I most definitely am not with Mike!"

"Well, then, who the hell have you been sleeping with?" She sniffs the air.

My cheeks burn with embarrassment. Oh. My. God. She did not just do that!

"And did you get a dog? It smells like dog in here." She notices the look of horror on my face. "Oh, come on, Bella, don't be coy. I just can't believe I haven't seen you with him! Spill, girl."

I was still in shock that Alice was here, and now she's grilling me about who I'm sleeping with! My head is spinning in a million directions. Edward made her promise not to contact me! What an asshole! How the heck did she get here so fast? She hadn't been able to see Jake since he changed! Why did I disappear from the future, right around the time we'd had sex? Maybe because it was like accepting the imprint?

"Um, no, I don't have a dog." I finally mutter.

"That's odd. The whole house smells like one. That's not important! Who's the guy, Bella?" She stresses, starting to get annoyed.

"Jacob Black." I finally state.

"That's weird, why did I stop seeing him all of the sudden? Wait a minute, he's not related to Ephraim Black, is he?"

"Um, yeah, he was his grandfather." Shit, she's going to figure it out. She wasn't with the Cullen's when the treaty was made, but I'm sure she knows ALL about it. Surely she doesn't know that the wolves are back though.

"Hmmm, all the descendants must carry the stench." She murmurs, barely audible. I don't think she intended for me to hear her.

"Descendants?" I ask raising my eyebrows at her.

"Oh, um, Ephraim is the one we made the treaty with." Alice says innocently.

"Alice, you can cut the crap, Ok? I know all about the wolves."

She looks taken aback. "You do?"

"Oh, yeah. Did you know that it's your presence that triggers the gene?"

"What? You mean-"

I interrupt her, "That the wolves are back? Yes, they are. It started happening again when the Cullen's moved back to Forks."

"So, Jacob is a wolf? Bella, do you know how dangerous it is for you to be with him?! He could snap, and you would be dead!"

"Don't be ridiculous! He would never hurt me, and especially not like Edward did. Alice, he imprinted on me, he'll never leave me. That's probably why you can't see my future anymore," I blush furiously, "The imprint was sealed last night."

Alice

I wince when she mentions how Edward had hurt her. He was trying to protect her, which obviously didn't work. A wolf? Really, the girl is a danger magnet!

"What do you meant by imprint?" I ask her, digging for more information.

"It's a wolf thing. Kind of like soul mates. Only stronger. We were kind of heading toward a relationship when he changed. Alice, if it wasn't for him I-I don't know where I'd be right now..."

The look on her face killed me. "I'm so sorry, Bella. The first time I accidently saw your future had been just after we left. I saw you sitting in the cafeteria at our old table, all by yourself. You looked so...empty. I was about to come back right then, but Edward had still been with us at that point. He saw what I was thinking and stopped me, saying that, surely, you would get better."

"What do you mean he was still with you at 'that point'?"

Whoops. I probably shouldn't have let that slip.

"He's not in Alaska with us anymore." I state hoping she won't ask much more. He'd left, probably because he couldn't stand to see how bad she was when I slipped up.

"Well, where is he now?" She asks.

I groan inwardly. "The last time I saw him, he was in Mexico. He doesn't contact us often. He's just traveling around." I leave out the part about how he;s in much worst shape than she ever was. He roamed around, not feeding as often as he needs to, not talking to anyone, not living at all, just...being. It breaks my heart when I do catch a glimpse of his future. There's just not much there.

"Oh." She glanced at the clock, "Look, Alice, I really need to get some sleep, I've got school tomorrow."

"Oh, come on, take a day off with me! We can go shopping and have a nice girl day. Please, Bella! I rushed all the way from Alaska to make sure you were ok! At least spend a day with me before I have to go back." I beg her. She's not the only one that had been missing her best friend.

She grins at me. "It can't wait until Saturday? Spring break is this week. Me and Jake are leaving for Jacksonville Thursday, but you could stay at least a couple of days. Come on, Alice! You don't have to rush back do you?"

"Go to sleep, Bella. We'll talk about it in the morning." I say mischievously, flipping off the lamp.

"Ok," she yawns loudly and lays back in bed. It's not long and she's fast asleep.

Jacob

I drive from Forks High School to Bella's house and I can't help but wonder why she hadn't been there. My plan had been to surprise her at school and convince her to ditch so we could spend the day together. Preferably somewhere where could be alone. But she never showed, so now, he was a little worried about her. Maybe she regrets what we did last night? It had been the best night of my life, and I can't wait for a repeat. But what if she changed her mind?

I pull into her drive, and a sense of dread washes over me. Vampire. He could smell it, the sickly sweet stench burning his nose. It was slightly different though, than Victoria and what was the other guys name? Laurent. That's it.

I jump out of my car and run to the front door. Charlie had already left and the door was locked. Please let her be ok. I say to myself over and over. I kick in the door and run up the stairs. Throwing her bedroom door open.

Sitting in the rocking chair was a tiny girl with short black hair and golden eyes. I recognize her from the pictures Bella had strewn around her last night. She was a Cullen. That's why she smelled...different.

"What the hell are you doing here?" I ask her, my voice snarling. I struggle to keep myself from phasing.

"Wha?" Bella says sitting up in bed and sleepily rubbing her eyes. She notices me and smiles. "Jake! What are you doing here so early, my alarm hasn't even-" She looks at her clock and gasps realizing that it's almost nine o'clock. "Alice! Did you turn off my alarm?" Alice just shrugs her shoulders apologetically as Bella glares at her.

What the fuck is going on.

"What the fuck are you doing here?" I snarl at Alice. Repeating my question."Don't you think y'all have done enough damage in this town?"

"Jacob!" Bella gasps scowling at me. "Alice is my guest."

"Well?" I continue to glare at the intruder.

"Well, dog, Bella's entire future disappeared last night after your little...tryst, so naturally I was worried about her and came to check and make sure she was ok. You're not the only person who cares about her well being, you know."

What? Her future disappeared? What the hell.

Bell must have noticed how confused I looked because she turned to Alice

"Alice, could you give me and Jake a few minutes? Please?"

Alice springs out of the chair and practically dances out of the room. "Ok, I need to hunt anyway. I'll be back though. Around noon, so we can go shopping!" She sings in her annoying voice. She walks out the door and down the steps and I slam the bedroom door behind her.

"You're going to need to fix this door, Jacob!" She yells up the stairs in a cheery voice that I can tell is going to drive me crazy if she sticks around very long. Please don't hang around very long.

"Fix the door?" Bella asks, giving me a look.

"I got here and I smelled a vamp. I thought you were in trouble, ok? I did what I had to do to get into the house as quick as possible. Now, will you please explain all this. Is he coming back?" Please say no!

"God, no!" I breathe a sigh of relief. "Alice only came back because she was worried. She thought...she thought I'd hurt myself. You know, after finding all that stuff last night."

"What did she mean when she said your future disappeared?" I ask her curiously.

"Well, you know how some vampires have special gifts, like how Victoria was good a evading you? Well, Alice can see the future. And when mine blanked out, she automatically thought something really bad was going to happen to me. But, it turns out she can't see the wolves in her visions, so when we sealed the imprint last night, my future disappeared."

I swallow. What if it's because she's like pregnant or something? It was so dumb to not use a condom! "If she can't see wolves, I mean, if...what if I got you pregnant and that's why she can't see you now?" Bella laughs. "What's so funny?" I can't help being slightly annoyed that she thinks this is something to laugh about, I am in no way ready to be a dad.

"I'm sorry. I probably would have thought the same thing but, she could see you before you changed. So, I don't think that's it. Stop beating yourself up over that. I really think it's going to be ok. We just can't let it happen again!"

Relief finally washes over me, she's ok and hopefully not pregnant. So, an annoying little leech was hanging out in Bella's room, as long as she's ok. That's all that matters. All I want now, is to spend some time alone with Bella Swan.

I smirk at her, "Oh, I came prepared today."

Her cheeks flush, "Oh, you did?"

All thoughts of the leech and disappearing futures leave my mind.

Bella is still sitting in her bed, she was wearing the same Mariners shirt, my shirt, that she had been wearing the night before. I walk over to her and lean down to kiss her, long and slow.

AN: So, my song for this chapter is: You Find Out Who Your Friends Are by Trace Adkins

You find out who your friends are

Somebody's gonna drop everything

Run out and crank up their car

Hit the gas, get there fast

Never stop and think "what's in it for me"

or "it's way to far"

They just show on up

With their big old heart

You find out who your friends are

Please, let me know what you think of this chapter!
